[Q] Problem with Rooting Kindle Fire HD 7" Running 7.2.3 - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I try to use this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2035334 and I tried manual. With the manual I got to echo 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' > /data/local.prop but my permission was denied. On the first method while running the RunMe.bat file it cannot find the specified path then when running RootQemu.bat file it also says permission was denied and will not root. I know of all lot of people running into this problem but cannot find a solution and there seems to be nobody that can answer why or how it can be fixed, any help would be great! Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice you may have!
Update: I have ran all programs or files as administrater through Command Prompt and without CMD.

I had the same issues, tried everything over a day or two before I got it done. As with other poster not sure what fixed it but here is what I did then I will ask you what you did.
Manual says install java I thought what the heck that has to do with it, but what I found was not the jave browser version but java developer tools version. JDK something like that.
I also added the binary v18 file to KFHD and did the restore. Not sure if that what helped.
I also did not think though what I was doing. I used window explore to select the runme.bat or qemu.bat I did right click and select run as Admin but I do not think that is only running the bat file as an admin not the command window cammands. That must be what I did wrong, not SURE.
I have windows 7. From the start button I have cmd program there so I right click and selected run as admin. I then cd \ to root and then cd to the path of the program I wanted. qemu.bat or what you want to run now run the .bat file worked.. WOW I GOT ROOT.
Try all those steps and let me know it I helped if I did give me a thumbs UP. I hope I helped.

Unable to root using version 7.2.3

[Q] what is "adb" and why cant i run it in terminal

ok... i am a little confused to what "adb" is and how to get "su" (superuser) via a Terminal app that i downloaded for my phone.
I type "su" and and I get "su: not found" same with "adb"
what am i not understanding?
trying to follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797397 but the commands are not working..
i am a little new to my captivate here, so help me out. I install 2.2 and i would like to root it..
thanks in advance, and forgive my ignorance.
ADB is the Android Debug Bridge. You can read what it is here Android Debug Bridge
To use this you must first install the Android Software Development Kit found here Download the Android SDK
Read up a bit on those and search the forums to find more help. Good luck.
I was / am in the same boat.
I spent 4 hours last night getting it figured out, I sure wish I could find an Android for dummies book.
Anyway, here is what cha do....
once you dowload the adb package unzip it to the root of your c drive, you may want to rename it to some thing shorter, I just called it android.
next download the root package from the root thread here and unzip the files and copy or cut them into the tools folder of the ADB folder you placed on the root of C:
navigate to the tools folder and copy adb.exe and adbwinapi.dll to the system32 directory in windows, you will need to reboot. This will allow you to use the windows cmd line.
now I am on window 7 64 so I ran the commond line as administrator to be safe. to do this click start all prograns accessorires right click cmd and select run as admin.
change directory to the tools folder, for me "cd c:\android\tools"
Connect phone be sure usb debugging is on in the phone, (settings, application, development. it will install drivers. (I manually installed the samsung 64 bit drivers I had downloaded from samsung)
from the command promt type adb devices and hope fully it will see your phone and return with the serial number and them you are good to go with following the instructions to root from there.
I hope this helps...

the information on how to use this is really not in one place, I spent 4 hours last night searching all over to figure it out, just so I would not ask and be belittled because there is NOT good information.
I have even been searching for any books I can find on Android so I can understand how this system works, but have found no good ones yet.
I need a nice Android for dummies type thing.
I spent an hour just to figure out it still won't run right unless you change directory to the tools folder where everything is at. ( it's been like 15 years since I messed with dos).
Some where in the wiki or bibles or all the other how toos being posted we really need better information on how to use the tools and what they are.
Cheers

WOOT looks like they have one now...
Quick Tip: Once you get the Android SDK installed, you can add the location of the Tools directory to the Windows path variable and be able to call the programs from anywhere on your computer.

OK. took me a little while to figure this out, too. Not sure of your level of knowledge of the terminal. If I over-simplified please forgive me.
"Extract RootPack zip file" Did you do this? I think you did from you post. Make sure you've copied the files to your "tools" subfolder in the android sdk folder.
Click the start button, click run, type "cmd", press enter.
When that window opens type "cd.." and press Enter. Keep typing "cd.." and pressing Enter until the only thing you see at the prompt is "c:\"
Now navigate to the Tools folder where ever it is you put the android sdk.
I put mine at "c:\android_sdk" so I would type "cd c:\android_sdk\tools"
Plug your phone into your computer.
Go to home screen>menu>settings>applications>development and select "USB debugging".
At the command prompt type "adb devices" and your phone should return a value (the serial number).
If that works you should be able to follow the directions below.
It's been mention that you should be able to copy the commands from the web page and right click the terminal window and select "Paste". Makes everything faster, easier and more accurate. One other thing to mention: after you perform these steps and you want to do something else through adb where you're instructed to type "su" you'll need to open the SuperUser application on your phone and press "approve" after typing "su".
adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
adb shell
cd /data/local/tmp
chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
(wait for you to get kicked from adb)
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/stl9 /system
exit
adb push su /system/bin/su
adb push busybox /system/bin/busybox
adb push sqlite3 /system/bin/sqlite3
adb push superuser.apk /system/app/superuser.apk
adb shell
cd /system/bin
chmod 4755 su
chmod 4755 busybox
chmod 4755 sqlite3
reboot

those arent even commands. just random words you put into the terminal....
follow the instructions exactly like PersonOfKnownOrigin has posted. it works
I too was having trouble, turns out the files were extracted and were in a sub folder in the Tools folder so I copied and pasted them directly into the tools folder one by one, that worked great for me. Also, I find it easier to open command shell and use the Android Tools by holding the shift key and right clicking on the Tools folder and choose open command window here. I hope this helps.
I have a stupid path becaue my laptop messed up when I first got it and I haven't been able to fix it because DOS is difficult to me. It works fine but I am too lazy to type such a long path and if you are off at all it dosen't work.
just copy and paste the commands so you don't get them wrong, worked for me. The command is su then hit enter then enter the next command line and hit enter, works like a charm.
ok, I got it.. I misinturpted that the first line (the 3 commands in one line) was a command that I was supposed to run..
it was not..
dohh.. thanks guys for all the help... i felt kinda dumb, but now I think I am kinda smrt. I mean Smart!! (Simpsons Humor)
thanks again for the paitence.

[Solved] cant get adb on ubuntu 10.10 maverick

Solved:
thanks to a good friend of mine he directed me to this file on GRP dev-site
http://greenromproject.com/showthread.php?269-ADB-The-Easier-Way
open this file in ubuntu software manager, let the package install and reboot system, then adb should work in any directory
Original Post:
ok guys i really didn't want to do this... i followed over 6 different guides now and am getting confused.. there too many methods and they all do not work.... i keep getting .../adb no such file or directory
i spent the last 2 days trying to set up adb on my 10.10 ubuntu, 64-bit system... i edited the bashrc file with the correct path, even typed it in myself because of known issues with ' " ' those things.. i also made the 71-android.rules file with about 3 different variations of this
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"
reboot the system, i ran adb kill-server and sudo adb start-server and im still getting message saying .../adb no such file or directory...
only thing i can think of to cause an issue is i updated the system, (not upgrade to 11.04) only update!! installed java jdk and all the needed parts for compiling roms... but just cant seem to get adb working
has anyone else had this type of issue or know how to solve it...? sdk version r12
please someone help

If you get this message, there is no need to look for autoconfig rules or something else, you need to check your path. Try to type
Code:
which adb
if adb cannot be found, you should do a
Code:
export PATH=$PATH:<path to your adb directory>
after that you should be fine for starting adb. If you would like to have it in your path permanently, you shoud add the line above to you .profile file in your home directory.
yeah i already did all that... added the correct path and everything... i tried all these diff methods and none worked, and none were even close to the same as far as what to add to bashrc and the rules.. but i got the issue solved thanks to a file i installed via update manager... rebooted system and adb worked fine

Help! Trying to Root and stuck

Okay. I am stuck and frustrated like crazy. I have a touchpad that i am trying to root. I have tried the universal novacom installer and it fails. I have tried web os doctor but that fails as well. I put the tablet in editing mode, then hold the volume up button while pluggin in the tablet to my computer and that puts it into usb update mode or something like that. I start the webos doctor and it gets to 4% and the tablet shows the HP loga and all of a sudden the computer looses connection with the tablet so it stops. What do i do? I really want to get this going but am hitting walls left and right. I have ene tried it on my old laptop that is running Windows XP. I can either use my XP laptop or my Windows 7 computer so anyone please gimme some answers. I probably left out some info so please ask. If anyone wants to call me thats fine by me. Thanks

Have you put the touchpad in developer mode? To do this, go to the just type line on the webos home screen and type "webos20090606" without the quotes. this will allow you to continue. If you would like me to assist you in depth, I can be reached via email at [email protected]. Additional help can also be found at webosnation.com in their forums

There is a space after < ie // < ACMEInstaller2
Have you installed novacom correctly as the novacom.exe file should in the Palm, Inc folder when you open it along with along with a folder called novacomd and terminal and that is where you should put ACMEInstaller2 and for safety's sake ACMEUnistaller .
Hope that helps.

[Q] Tons of Trouble with ADB and Fastboot

I'm having a crapload of trouble with adb and fastboot. I've been searching for the last few hours but to no avail. I've downloaded multiple drivers and tried to do everything i can to setup the adb and fastboot. I managed to get the bootloader unlocked and its rooted and usb debugging is enabled. Every time i type "adb devices" into a command prompt it says that adb is not a valid command etc. What the heck am i doing wrong and why is this supposedly simple process so difficult here?? Please help...
Did you use the "cd" command to change the directory to where the platform-tools folder is?
That's assuming you have the Android SDK and Java Dev Kit (JDK) installed already..

Does that install the tools in the Windows equivalent of "$PATH" so users don't have to cd to the tools' location.
And do you mind if I link to this in my how-to guide? Credit will be given to you and your team of course.

Yep. U can do it I'm happy to share this tools with other users :good:
About the location, I set the installation path to C:\Windows so it means that it can be used as an windows services whenever u call it on cmd. No needs to set the location.
For example: If users use command "adb devices", it will work immediately and show the result. However when they want to decompile an apk and put file in a folder named "X", it's needed to use cd command to set the location in cmd to "X" then use adb/apktool/fastboot as normal without having adb/apktool/fastboot files in "X" folder. It helps to define the location of apk file, not the apktool/adb/fastboot.
Hope u can understand my idea =.= Sometimes, my explanation is really not good becoz English is not my mother language

That's what I thought it did. I was going to do something similar, but I couldn't remember if the correct folder was and I was just too lazy to do the research and find out. I was thinking System32, but its been so long that I couldn't remember.

Can the Touchpad Toolbox be updated to so that it will accept GAPPS named pa_gapps-*4.4.4-*.zip instead of pa_gapps-*-4.4.2-*.zip?
Either that or remove or allow to skip the requirement that GAPPS zip must be present to do the "Install Android" selection. I eventually worked around it rejecting by renaming the 4.4.4 to 4.4.2 but it will probably frusturate novice users.

Anyone know if the charging dock will still work following an android installation?
Also, I will search for compatible rom builds, but do themes work as well? (Not sure why they wouldn't, just checking)

Yes the Touchstone charging dock works on android...
TP Toolbox failed; I'm OS-less; please help
I'm on a Mac.
I can't figure out how to make tptoolbox work on the Mac.
I went to a frustrated friend with a PC (Windows) who did not allow me enough time to complete my task.
My Touchpad is now OS-less, as in no OS; no WebOS, no Android.
I successfully did a full data wipe, twice. Thus no OS.
I couldn't get past the next step, install Android, on TPToolbox.
I got stimied after trying to copy the three files to the ttinstall folder. It said a proper recovery file was not found.
I followed the steps above to a T. I copied and pasted the three files from the windows batch to the ttinstall.
I realize in those three files there were no gapps, no recovery, no kitkat files.
So I hope I copied the right three.
Anyway, my frustrated impatient friend kicked me out, so I have no access to a PC anymore (just my old faithful Mac); I have a TP without an operating system on it; and I have no idea how to proceed (as I don't know which three files I'm supposed to copy and paste as it seems the ones I did copy and paste weren't the ones and there's no Gapps, no Recovery and no Android KitKat installs anywhere (I thought that would be within the TP Toolbox programme itself.)
Like I said, I clicked on the correct links, I went with JCSullins first link vs. the other two.
So somebody, anybody, write me back if they know either how I can proceed, or if I can just send you my TP and you can do a big favour for a small nobody.
Thanks everybody.
If not, anyone wanna buy a TP with no OS?
I still need help. HELP!
I still need help. Anybody? HELP!!!

Have you tried to install it using jcsullins recommendation that you use the Linux way with Mac?
Kit Kat working
OK, like the chap above, I moved the wrong three files into the ttinstall folder. I figured that out. It's the way the thread was written, easy to get confused as they have links right below and say it's those, when in fact it is not (a gapps, recovery and rom need to be moved in there, not the data version of android as that link downloads). Anyway, I sorted it out. Just putting closure on that. Thanks JCSullins! Now we need a Mac version so I need not borrow a friends PC laptop.

Have you tried running the script in terminal as jcsullins suggested?
C) Run the script provided with TPToolbox
Extract the contents of the TPToolbox zip file from above.
Navigate to the tptoolbox_v40 directory that was extracted from the zip.
On Windows, run the batch file named tptb_v40_win.bat
On Linux, run the script named tptb_v40_nix.sh
On Mac, try what I said for Linux and let me know what happens.

Hi Shumash, Thank you for writing and being interactive. Yes I did do as suggested and tried running the .sh (linux) file on my Mac. The file opened with TextWrangler and read:
#!/bin/sh

I did a quick search online and found that Macs don't handle the .sh command, rather the command is, believe it or not, .command.
More that that I'm a novice. So I can't say.
And that's when I went to borrow a friend's PC whereupon I double clicked the .win file, extracted it, then ran it in the ensuing window no problem.
--------------------
Now I'm glad someone is reading this thread. I have a question for you (or anyone). Now that I've TP Toolbox'd my HP Touchpad (and I did not select the option to install WebOS on it), how do I transfer files from my Mac (preferred method) to the HP Touchpad now?
I put it in recovery mode (the big USB sign) but it didn't show up on my Mac desktop. It was unrecognized in the Finder too.
So I went back to my friend on hands and knees and am now using TP Toolbox to put an updated file into the ttinstall folder. Is TP Toolbox now the only way to get files on and off my Touchpad? Say it ain't so (and walk me through the process if it ain't so).
There must be an easier way. What am I to do? Please help. Thanks.

From a search on Google (I don't have a Mac):
First in terminal make the script executable by typing:
chmod a+x (yourscriptname)
Then in finder right-click your file and select "Open with" and then "Other...".
Here you select the application you want the file to execute into, in this case it would be Terminal. To be able to select terminal you need to switch from "Recommended Applications" to "All Applications".
NOTE that unless you don't want to associate all files with this extension to be run in terminal you should not have "Always Open With" checked.
After clicking OK you should be able to execute the script by simply double-clicking it.

Again, what is my scriptname?
3. Is this related to quetion 1? Does yor response suggest all files must niw be xferred using tptoolbox (in the method you described) if im using a mac and that there is no other way to accomlish that task?

TP Toolbox on a Mac
This system will not allow me to post my questions. It claims I have a URL in my message (which I do not) and won't allow me to post.
Is there another way to contact you?
Another email? Forum? Etc.?
I saved my questions as I can not submit them here.
There's a problem with the XDA forum.

Thanks. I followed your link (to google) and read many results. The easiest looking result, which almost worked was this:

it was the fourth result, entitled: "How to run a unix shell script from the Mac Finder"
I followed those instructions.
Terminal opened (launched from the Finder window using their noted technique) and here is what was displayed in Terminal: (please note: I exchanged my computer name from it's real name to ABC and XYZ (for this thread; not my real computer name).

I do see the .bin file in the same folder, the TPToolbox folder, as tptb_v40_nix.sh (which, by the way, I duplicated and changed the extension from .sh to .command, prior to searching in Finder as outlined in above links' description).
So I don't know what to do.
I know a lot of things you likely do not know; but you clearly know more about computers than I. Please be patient and explain succinctly.
I tried your method, first replied from , with and without brackets, that didn't help.

Regarding Android File Transfer, and I thank the contributor below for chiming in with that advice, I've used that, but it only works sometimes. It is not reliable; and doesn't see ALL the files (as a WebOS USB connection to my Mac used to).
Is there some way to put the HP Touchpad into USB mode and connect it to my Mac (like I used to before on the HP WebOS side (when I had an HP WebOS side)? This may be argument enough to keep the WebOS side. (I can put it in USB mode on Android, but the Mac does not recognize the HP Touchpad at all doing it that way).
---------------------------------------------------------------
Another unrelated question: What ever happened to PreWare? I can't find it anywhere. I installed Jason Robitaille's WebOS QuickInstall 4.5.0 and ran it ok. But when one clicks on the globe, there's no Preware. When one clicks on the Search field , there are zero results (except themes). No Applications, Kernels, Patches, etc.. Nothing. So what ever happened to Preware?
Not having been able to find that, and with Palm no longer supporting WebOS at all after Jan 15, 2015, was the nail in the coffin for WebOS for me. If I can't find Preware and all the apps and tweaks that come along with it, the only reason I can see keeping any WebOS on this tablet at all is to be able to put it in to WebOS USB mode and easily connect it to my Mac.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Lastly, I'm running JCSullins build titled/dated: cm-11-20141002-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip
How do I take a screenshot with this ROM? It used to be Power button and lower volume button, but that screenshot option is no longer available in this JCSullins build, nor in the previous build: cm-11-20140625-SNAPSHOT-jcsullins-tenderloin.zip
Any ideas how to take a screenshot?

My guess is that executing the shell script by double-clicking starts it in the wrong directory. Open a terminal in the directory where you have the Toolbox files and execute it from the command line there.
