Hi,
I'm looking for a way to avoid updates for my KFHD by Amazon over OTA.
Is there an software hack or firewall solutions?
My device running version 7.2.3 and is rooted.
I did read that also rooted devices will get OTA updates. And this will remove root and other changes.
Best regards!
Rooting is required to stop ota updates, there are scripts on this forum that look unhealthy to run, some people freeze apps with titanium backup, others use droidwall, I personally just gained root then renamed a file named otacerts.zip to otacerts.bak from etc/security and that worked fine for me...
People from all these forums claims any one of these solutions do not work, I can attest that otacerts.bak worked for me. But they should all be viable solutions.
I am still on 7.2.1

Thank you very much and a happy new year!

Hi,
Is there a working permission management app for the RAZR I?
None of the LBE versions (market, xda) work for me, and yes I am rooted.
Thx in advance.

Same problem here. See my post before.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988981
I was also looking for this. Normally I'd have gone for PDroid, but that is not possible (yet?). So I found another app "AppGuard". Unlike PDroid it does not modify your system, but the app itself. The "problem" is that the apps have to be uninstalled, modified and reinstalled. AppGuard does this for you, but you still have to select every app and you lose your data for this app since it's being reinstalled. My phone was just "reset" because I unlocked the bootloader, so it was no big issue for me.
You can find the app here http://www.backes-srt.de/produkte/srt-appguard/ (hope that is not against the rules)
What is the best method of blocking ads on the RAZR i? I'm running InfiniROM which is based on JB 4.1.2.
Adblockplus was the BEST on my old Android 2.3 phone. On my RAZR i, I'm rooted and everything but it isn't functioning the way it should on my rooted device.
AdAway sort of works. My complaint is that it doesn't block 100% of the ads and when it DOES block them, there is a box saying "cannot display this webpage" in place of where the ad would be.
It this the best it gets until they compile adblockplus to work on x86 android devices or is there something I don't know about?

Try Lucky Patcher

Thanks. I've had Lucky Patcher all this time and I didn't know it could block ads. It replaced AdAway's ~700kb hosts file with a beefy 1.3MB hosts file. It doesn't work as well as adblock but it's the best solution so far.

Are you talking about the one on adblockplus.org? Man, I really wish that would work. It currently doesn't work on x86 androids (the root functions don't work) and it probably never will.
The adblockplus android team is too busy keeping up with the newer JB updates. They're probably not going to bother to fix their app for the couple thousand or less RAZR i users when they've got millions of other users to fix other issues for.
Why not use Adfree? Works like a charm.

In adaway, enable the webserver.
I took all the default hosts files from AdAway, the hosts file that Lucky Patcher provides and another anti ad hosts file that I had and merged them all into one using the Linux terminal. I also deleted the duplicate lines with the terminal. This gave me an ~8.6MB hosts file.
There are sometimes boxes that say "could not display this webpage" just like there is with Adaway and Adfree. It's just that with this hosts file, less of them actually get through. I'm happy with this solution.
If someone wants to test it, use a root file explorer, backup the original hosts file, put this in the original hosts file's place, give this new file the same permissions as the original one and then restart.
This post is almost a year old now, can you maybe merge the updated hosts with the newer MoAB thread file (unless its the same thing?)

Unzip and use the hosts file from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098 . It works great.
I've followed a root guide (not able to link due to account restrictions), however I am not sure whether I have rooted correctly (Superuser has been installed via the root). I'm a beginner in rooting and thought it would be straight forward (due to the number of tutorials around), but I don't know how to proceed now.
My basic objective is to install jelly bean with no issues in usage as the owner isn't very tech literate. The tutorials I have tried to follow thus far have had some steps which aren't possible in my circumstance or certain steps which aren't possible due to a change in the app.
If possible I will appreciate it if someone helps me, whether here, or on skype/teamspeak; preferably on the latters as it will speed up the process and I am quite time restricted. If possible I don't mind completely resetting the kindle to its original software and such and starting again just to be sure If I have rooted, but I don't know how to do that.
Thanks in advance

Thats to Root; I've already rooted (assuming from the video when it says you can see the superuser app)
Well if you have rooted right go to your browser and search for an app called Root Checker. It does not require root. It checks to see if your rooted right. If you are not rooted right the app will say so but if you are rooted right you get a message saying "You have successfully rooted your device." Hope I helped you.

Thanks
Ok, I've now installed the play store and disabled ads using this VERY useful tutorial (thanks prok!). Is there a similar tutorial on how to install jelly bean on it now?
Well the best rom out there right now is Unofficial CM10.1 from Hashcode. Yes, you could install a different one but Unofficial CM10.1 is currently the best in my opinion.
Good Evening All
I am after a bit of help/advice
Ok, I have a Kindle fire HD 7inch
I have [11/15] BETA CM10.2 + 3.0.50+ KERNEL installed and gapps-jb-20130813-signed installed
I have no issues using any of the google apps all happy with that.
The issue i have is that when i download Amazon app store it downloads ok, it installs ok
But when i go to run the App it crashes every time no matter what
I have installed via email, downloaded from amazon, sideloaded, copied from computer to tablet via ES file explore
installed from drop box, all instales looked like they installed ok.
i have tried deleting the cache still no joy, i have deleted the KFHD from amazon still no joy
i can log into my amazon account via the WWWeb so my account works
I was wondering if i had missed somthing out or have not installed somthing i should have
thank you in advance
Paul
Having the same issue. Tried redownloading and that didn't help. Ended up browsing for an older version and that did work. Just don't update it when prompted or back to force close you go.
Seems to work fine on my S4,just not on Cm 10.2 for some reason.

Try downloading it from Amazon while on your tablet http://www.amazon.com/gp/mas/get/android If it does not work then I can upload the official Amazon APK I am using which is not the super new one. I have a habit about waiting to see how an updated app gets reviewed before updating and using Titanium to back up first just in case the update messes the app up.

This seems to be an issue for everyone across the board using cyanogenmod. Do any devs know what's going on here? I currently can no longer get any version of the Amazon store back on mine, new or old. I took the version 7 update when I was prompted and it, of course, doesn't work. Well, I didn't have a backup of version 5 anywhere so I grabbed an apk of 5, tried to install that back, and it force closes as well. Sucks bad considering a few of the games I have installed require the Amazon store to run even if you've linked them to Google Play.

I wiped the old data and updated to the new Amazon App and it FC. Flashed my nandroid with the previous version and no issues. This is not the first time the Amazon APK has gone haywire. I don't think it has anything to do with CM.

I downloaded the new Amazon APK and it does FC. Flashed a nandrod and have the last version and it works just fine. So I would remove the new Amazon APK and use SD maid or Titanium to wipe any old data too. Then you can try installing last version Amazon APK I uploaded to my drop box. This should fix the force closing issue. Make sure to reboot after installing if needed and uncheck Amazon apk in your sandbox if it's lit up so it can access your info.

You will see in the screen shot provided today's Amazon free app of the day.
Good Morning All
I have managed to sort it.
i had made a back before flashing using titanium and it looks like it kept the backup folder on the SD card
so i reinstaled titanium after flash and restored my amazon account rebooted and is now installed, i also
took off a couple of folders of apps that are no longer installed no program managed to show me these
anyway thank you for your help

So if I am reading this correctly, you went back to an older version via restoring your backup?

Hi
RedsonRising
I originally had free kindle installed and made a backup with titanium when i put on CM10.2
it seems that nothing at all was wiped on the card so when i installed titanium again
it showed the backup so i installed from the titanium back and that seemed to fix it
i installed the program plus data files

Paul
Well, I've now tried everything to get the Store back. I've cleared data, ran SD Maid, sifted through the root directories looking for anything related to a previous install that might be causing conflict, converted to a system app..nothing is working. I get a force close on version 5 and 7 both. I've even upgraded the tablet to CM 11 and still getting the fc. Help!

That's how Titanium works. As long as you don't wipe the data from your File Explorer (or write over it if you only allow one backup) it will be there for ever. That's how those of us that jump ROM's keep our info.

Yea, if you have Titanium, just restore the app data to that app any you're back to the previous version in two seconds.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire HD running CM 11 KitKat 4.4 using xda app-developers
So that solves the problem short term (I installed an older version), but it doesn't solve the issue of not being able to run the latest version. Granted it may not offer any improvements we can't live without, but down the line it could cause issues.

Amazon AppStore and Amazon KindleApp now work
I am on an Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7" running CM 11 from Hashcode's latest release on xda app-developers two weeks ago. The Amazon Kindle App would force close. I tried every combination of data and cache clearing with shutdown and restart then reloading the Amazon AppStore and Kindle App.
I had success after using LinearEquation's older version of the Amazon AppStore, with a simple side load. Prior to the load I cleared the data and cache and then removed the Amazon AppStore and Amazon Kindle App. After installing the older version of the Amazon AppStore from LinearEquation and the current version of the Amazon Kindle App from Google Play Store... Success! both work.
To confirm it was the new version of the AppStore causing the problem and not the Kindle App, I then updated the Amazon AppStore and the AppStore forced close again; however the Kindle App remained working.
Thanks for making the download available! Returned my Kindle to an Amazon reader without the annoying Amazon OS.

Hello!
i hope someone is able to answer this one?
i wonder if it is somehow possible to switch to a second installed TTS engine on Fire OS. I am blind and use the build in VoiceView screenreader which is quite good. But i want to use another text-to-speech engine from Acapela which i have installed from PlayStore.
Unfortunatelly the TTS settings only allow to switch between the preinstalled Amazon Ivona voices and not to switch to a different TTS engine. So i guess there must be a way to fix this.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Rene
I think the only way of doing this is with a rooted device. There are some safe ways to root your device and install custom ROMS. I do realize this could be a great leap considering the impairment but maybe you have someone that could help you in doing it. Also, as an aside, Google is releasing an app to allow one to entirely control their device with voice. They are beta testing this now with limited testers and hopefully it will be released to all shortly.
If you root, I would suggest using a safe ROM and rooting method, reading the Fire Original Android Development forum should point you in the right direction. My personal preference is to use the SuperTool and install the AOSP Fire Nexus ROM. Good luck and I appreciate your dilemma, just sorry there is not an easier solution.

Many thanks! I think i'll go that road. With the AOSP ROM: is it also possible to use the same amazon apps which are normaly preinstalled on the Fire? Most of them are really accessible.
Thanks again!
Rene
The AOSP ROM will firmly place you in the Google environment but you could still download Amazon apps once you install the Amazon Appstore application. But you may find the Google apps will suit your needs as well if not better. Keep us posted on your progress.
