[Q] Completely format internal SD Card with PC - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everybody
My SGS is semi-bricked, which means that my internal SD card is dead, but the system is still working.
I can make calls and send SMS, but anything that may use the internal sd card (Camera, Videos... ) is not accessible. It ask me to turn off the USB storage...
I searched a lot in the net -especially in this forum because it seems that there are many professional and expert members herein- and i found that
there are some methods to solve the problem of bricked phones with totally Dead Memory using an external SD.
Like my phone's memory is just corrupted, I wish to know if there is any possibility to format the internal card using PC,
create new partitions (FAT32 and EXT4) and install the rom. (I tried to format it with recovery and ClockworkMod, no result...).
Finally, I apologise for my English style, I'm not a native speaker
NB: When I connect the phone to PC, I can see the memory slot, but it's empty...It doesn't recognise the SD Card.

Search for a thread called dead internal sd solution or something like this. There is a way to format and repartition the sd over the PC. But I'm not completly sure how.

Can anyone tell me why my SD card disappears ?

I have to reset my phone about 15-20 time a day because my SD card disappears. By itself. All the time.
Can anyone tell me a) WHY this happens and b) HOW to stop it ?
I have a 32 gb external. The phone is relatively untouched (vanilla with Root that's all I've done to it)
But it really bothers me because I have to reset my phone just to take pictures/video's etc. It's always unavailable. Both my internal and external card.
How the hell do I stop it from disappearing ? What is the cause ?
Wow, that seems VERY ODD. eh. Did you format the card using your phone? if not I recommend you do it. settings/sd card and phone settings/unmount external sd card then FORMAT. I know there could be some bugs if you format using a PC. If that does not help then MAYBE you have a fake 32gig card? or worst of all your phone's hardware might be at fault then you will need to return it. Other then that I guess you will need to google "32gig SD samsung galaxy S problem"
Does this happen with stock f/w and without external sd? if yes u probably want to visit the service centre, if not its some problem with your rom / root / 32g card... ? Also, is the ext sd mounted under settings > sd ?
But how are these related to android dev...??
I know this thread will be disappearing to the general forum
I'd try letting the phone reformat the card, throw some files and double check it with the phone. maybe your card's a fake and can't really hold that much, so it craps out? that's all I can think of.
Try another card to see if the issue is the phone or the card.
Also check the contacts on the card and the slot for dirt or bent pins, wipe with a micofiber cloth to remove any fat or other residue.

Dude, what widgets do you have installed?
I know you say it's vanilla, but an app can do this when it refreshes.

I had this happen when I used the "partition SD card" option in ROM Manager. It killed the SD card and made my internal memory unreadable. I formatted the dead sd on my pc and that worked for a bit but then it couldn't read it again. I did a complete data wipe and that seems to have worked for the internal memory. Now I'm using a new sd card. What's weird is that the SD that phone refuses to read, my GF's phone recognizes it...
yesterday i had similar issues. dont know if they are gone.
i couldnt play music - "cant play the codec" error msg - it was the sd card, but only the external.

[Q] recover files from internal SD

Hi,
I accidently formatted my internal SD card on my Galaxy, there were still some photo's wich i would like to save.
I know external SD cards can be mounted on computer and then recover files by using recuva or something similiar.
I cannot mount the internal SD as a disk in windows however..
Is there any way i can recover these files after a delete or format, or is it all lost forever?

Maybe if you're lucky.
Try with "Disk tool 6.x".
Depends upon the format carried out for example windows current quick format does not wipe data and can be recovered using something like Recuva tool .
Windows full format since Vista destroys the data .
I would try a recovery tool in the hope that its a quick type format but i dont know what format Android uses .
jje
any link to that ?
is it marketplace or windows app?
the problem is that i cannot mount the internal SD as a disk in windows.
For external SD its different, just put it in a slot and its recognized as H:\ or something then recuva can scan it.
internal SD isnt visible as driveletter. or is there a possibility?
Recuva via google its free .
View internal SD card via USB Mass Storage Mode .

Thanks alot!
Didnt knew there was an option to mount as usb storage mode.
recuva found all missing photo's and movies.
My girlfriend almost killed me yesterday as there was almost 7 months of photo's on the phone.
you made her and me very happy!
Great. Plz mark the thread as solved as it helps people in a better way

[Q] SOLVED: Connecting with USB shows only internal memorycard...

HI!
I have this problem that when I turn on the file sharing, the computer shows only internal memory card and not the external. Because the phone itself recognizes the external card I have tried to unmount and mount several times without any improvement. I am currently using the latest CM7 nightly, but the problem seemes to have started after I changed the card from 4gb to 16 gb. Any ideas?
EDIT: Erasing sd card from the phones menu helped to solve the problem.
Go Setting>Storage and remount your sd card and try???
I've done that several times....no help... android system accesses the card without problems...music, pics etc.
Did you physically remove your card and reinsert it, or just software remount?
Have you tried the card directly in your computer?
Have a look in windows device manager and see if it reports any problems. (right
click my computer and select manage)
I have tried it all and everything is ok with the sd card itself (I copied recent nightly from the computer on the sd card) also recovery recognizes is... there are also no problems in device manager...
Try to put on debugging mode. And try it with debugging mode on.
If the debugging mode is on try to take it off.
Regards Kali
I tried that also and nothing changed.... I have a feeling that it is somehow attached to me using mybackup pro... I restored application apk and data from another phone to this one and It seems that usually the application data should go to internal memory card. In this case it is on external card... so i believe that somehow the programs are still using the card when connected and do not allow phone to share it out... It's just a guess though...
EDIT: so I think the solution is to wipe everything and start all over again
So I fresh installed Rom and wiped everything and the problem still exist... still can see files with file managers in phone and when connected to computer, autorun shows only internal card...
Edit: I tried now 2gb sized sdcard and it works perfectly... the problem is with 16gb card.
Weird. Did you try another USB-port?
I tried different USB-s now and still same I found out that when I connect the phone, under my computer appears two removable disks.... if I turn on the usb connection, only one transforms to usable removable disk (internal) and the other one asks to insert the removable disk. I used the same sd card on my HTC desire with CM nightlies and it worked perfectly... could it be CM-s bug?
Sorry to ask (maby the obvious)
On Your phone.. using your filemanager (Root explorer astro or what-ever..)
Browse to sdcard
Do you have a folder called _externalSD?
On this phone, for some reason the external SD is not mounted under./ but as i said under ./sdcard/ (i.e its mounted under the internal SD card..)
Just a thought
Where the different cards are mounted doesn't make any difference. And as he said, it works with other cards (2GB and 4GB).
CyanogenMOD mounts internal card as /mnt/emmc, and external card as /mnt/sdcard by default.
When turning on USB storage, both cards should be unmounted and shared over USB.
Hi, I had the same problem with mine, and as you said in one of your previous posts, I had to do a format through the phone and as soon as I did that I was good to go.
I did use the same memory card in my old hero so this might have something to do with it... I'm not sure.
By formatting do you mean from the menu Erase SD card? On the desire I actually had the formatting request from the computer, but there was another problem (some of the rom's files were on the sdcards ext or something and I had no access to the card from the USB).... kind of a similar problem if I think back now but after changing to CM, the problem disappeared.
I forgot to mention I am running completely stock rom and unrooted (for the time being) and there is just an option under sd card & phone storage setting to format external sd card
After erasing the sd card from the phone, the computer recognized it i'm currently copying stuff back and i'm pretty sure it does not affect the recognition
I faced the same problem. I had Swapper2 on my NC, and after I uninstalled it (and cleared the data of Swapper2, just in case) everything went to normal back again.
^ a solution.

[Q] Damaged SD card

Hi guys,
I tried partitioning my external sd card to linux swap, and something must have gone wrong. Now,a notification on my Galaxy S reads "Damaged SD card - SD card damaged. You may have to reformat it." This was the first thing I tried, but the Internal SD is formatted instead when I try. (Rom bug?). When i mount my phone via USB, only the formatted (damnit) internal SD is found.
I'm currently on TiramiSlim (best rom!!) with Devil 0.94. If you have any help it would be appreciated, any further questions don't hesitate!

In first i think that partition ext sd card is useless but it's my opinion.
In fact if you want to recover your ext sd i advise you to reformat your sd card with the windows disk utility: you select all volumes, delete them and recreate a new one with ntfs format (android will do his work when you'll insert your sd in the device).
If it doesn't work try to make the same but with a Linux system (Linux is powerful ^^).
Please reply me your results.
Have you tried to format the SD card with an SD Adapter & then make sure that USB debug is enabled on the device.
I had this issue.
Sometimes it shows that the card is damaged & then it reads it later on!
I plugged the Card into my Digi-Cam Formatted it.
Changed the Rom.
Now it works.
Anyways safely remove the drive when plugged into a computer!
i don't have an sd-card adapter unfortunately, the only way i can plug it in is via my phone. I cannot seem to find a disk utility on windows that will read the external sd, i can only find the internal from my computer.
i will try and get hold of an sd-adapter and let you know if it works
fixed the problem!

how did you fix the problem?
My phone recognizes the internal storage but i keep getting "sd card is damaged, try reformatting it" in the notification bar.
when I click on format, it says "unmounting sd card" but nothing happens.
Thanks,
Luke
*edit.. nvm.
I put my SD card in my old x10 and in settings/storage I erased my SD card.
Works fine now

[Q] Accessing internal SD Card

Hi,
I am trying to access my internal SD card to backup my data before running a repair in pc companion but having terrible difficulties. In windows 8 via pc companion windows explorer just hangs and the most I have managed is to copy 300mb for 4gb from the phone. I cant even see or get my device seen in Ubuntu. Is there any way at all to get this part of my phone to be seen as mass storage like the external SD card is. I have been trying for hours and searching the internet with no success. All I want to do is back up my data so I dont loose it during the repair process.
Thanks
Lee
Think I have got my windows8 pc working on the transfer but says will take 23 hours!! Surely everyone doesnt go though this when doing a repair each time there must be a simpler solution I am missing here....

Issue still stands, however temporary solution of using es file explorer to copy all my internal sd card over to some space I freed up on my external sd card. out of curiosity can someone actually confirm whether or not I am wasting my time? Do the restore process actually completely wipe my internal SD card?

No, Nothing on either SD card is touched in an update or a repair from PCCompanion.
In an update only system partition is deleted
In a repair system and data partitions are deleted.
Internal and external SD cards are always left alone.
Nice one cheers for that clear up, I have alot of experience with Android but my first device with internal sdcard, warnings on PC Companion are a bit vague, didnt know if to be safe sony would just wipe the entire device during a repair which is a rather big bit of overkill I thought. Thanks for clearing that up. Still hunt for an ideal solution so access that sd card from a pc though grrrr
