hi there,
is it possible to replace some system apps on a samsung s3 lte rom with google stock apps?
apps which i would replace:
- email
- gmail
- calendar
- contacts
- sms/mms
- phone
i can remember some times ago, there was a theard for a normal s3 without lte to replace that apps, but i cant find it again. in the past it was not possible to replace contacts and phone app, maybe now it is, but i would be very happy to replace the e-mail, calendar and sms/mms app again. so if this is possible, could someone from you guys provide the neccessary apk files?
i found this theard - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1964726&highlight=aroma - but im missing email, sms/mms, contacts and phone apk files.
many many thanks!

hi there,
for all who maybe have the same needs like me, here is a theard(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728308) where you can chose a lot of stock google apps with a guide how to do that..
for me, i try it with messaging and e-mail app:
1. download the apps from the theard
2. rename the apps in secmms.apk, secemail.apd and secexchange.apk and copy it to your phone
3. go to you app manager and look for your email and exchange service app, delete the cache, delete the data and stop the apps
4. save the original apps .apk and .odex files in system/app and delete it after
5. copy the downloaded and renamed apps in system/app
6. be sure that the permissions are right
7. reboot and its done

I upgraded to the leaked OS 2.2 Froyo and now I am getting the below issue when I reply to emails. Doesn't happen to EVERY email but several to cause me issues at work.
I am using Exchange only.
I reply to an email and it is recieved but all text I typed is missing and it actually looks as if I forwarded the email back to the sender.
I saw on another forum some other were experiencing this issue but none had a clue how to resolve it.
Anyone know how to fix this? Others seeing this?
Any help would be appreciated!!
???
Is no one else having this issue? Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve it? Do I need to wipe the deivce?
I've had this issue as well when using my exchange.

I had the same issue with email after cognition2.2BETA5.5. It seems that designgears had installed the AOSP email app but removed it in later versions due to too many complaints. I find that the AOSP app is much better then then TW Email apk. I performed the steps below to install the AOSP Email.apk. Replies work everytime without issue.
1.) Get the Email AOSP app from a different rom or make a request and I will happily provide a link to download the apk.
2.) Connect your phone to the computer and move the Email.apk to the root of your sdcard.
3.) Backup your current Email.apk with Titanium or manually copy it to another location on your phone.
NOTE: You may need to backup your phone settings so you can restore your launcher after clearing cache in the final step to avoid having to replace all of your home screen icons.
4.) Using Root Explorer or Astro, copy the Email.apk copied to your sdcard into the folder /system/app/ to replace the current app.
5.) Return to the home screen. At this point you should no longer see an email icon on your dock.
6.) Go to Applications->Settings->Applications->Manage Applications
7.) Clear the cache on the TWLauncher Application.
8.) Return to the home screen and you should now see the email icon has returned to the dock.
9.) Restore TWLauncher settings with Titanium to restore home screen icons that were removed in the cache.
Please let me know if you need the email.apk from cognition2.2beta5.5
Aosp email.API link request
Is there a copy of the email.API that doesn't have the blank reply issue yet has all the features of cognition latest release?
I have attached a working Email apk to this post. Down load it and follow the steps in the post above to resolve the blank email reply issue. Let me know if you have any issues.
I followed the instructions, however, I did not have a backup of twlauncher, so now I don't have an email icon on my home bar
So put the icon back on your launch bar. It is configurable. (doing this from memory, so i may miss a step). Go to your list of apps -> menu -> edit and you can configure 3 of the 4 icons on the touchwiz launcer (you can't get rid of the apps shortcut).

Alright, hopefully you all are still willing to help somebody else out on this issue, as I am in the same boat as gibgib3. I have followed the steps above using the attached email.apk from f13nd0.
The issue I get is that launching email cause an immediate crash of the application, as well as attempting to add a new "Corporate" email account.
I am not an Android development power user myself, although I've used adb in the past sparingly. I really just am clinging to the leaked Froyo build from October, and just want working email (TouchDown is crazy slow and expensive) until Samsung finally pushes out an official Froyo build.
Any ideas here?

That is the "nuclear option" that I'd like to avoid. While I have everything backed up with titanium, I already am planning to flash back to stock when the official update comes out, so I'm looking to minimize the necessity to flash a ROM again.
I'm hoping that there is some "tried and true" way to swap out my email.apk with a working version, as the previous steps just result in a "Force Close" whenever I try and run it.
So the solution here, for anybody having this issue, is to remove the existing email.odex file from the /system/app directory, which was associated with the original Samsung email app.
All systems go here.
How do you remove the email.odex file? As it is in the system folder, the file permission is ready only and I cannot delete it. Is there a util in the market that you can download to change file permissions?
Root Explorer did the trick for me.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Does the phone needs to be rooted (my phone has the leaked froyo but do not think it is rooted) for the root explorer to be able to change the permission?
I download other free utils that has access to the file but cannot change the permission in order to delete it.
Yes, it does.

Rooting is the key to doing all "magic" stuff like this. What good is a wizard (user) without his magic wand (root access) to work on any magic (his captivate)?

Okay, I finally learn how to root the phone and was finally able to remove the existing email.odex file. Now I don't have the email icon anymore. I must assume you have replaced this email.odex file as well as the apk file??? I tried clearing the cache and everything on the twlauncher and it's a no go.
Hi All,
I'm on the AT&T Captivate and have an issue with some of the ROMs that are out here. I am currently running the Cognition B9.1.2 ROM and LOVE it! My issue is that I am in Canada on the Rogers network and have found that certain messaging apps record incorrectly the received time of incoming SMS messages. There are tools in the Market to sort of fix this but I have found that some ROMs (Thinking of the "Tayutama's JPM Froyo w/Xcaliburinhand's Re-oriented Kernel - 10/28/2010" as an example where this error does not occur. I was looking at modifying the messaging app between those ROMs but was unsure how to do that.
Any help or pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

The text message time issue is not due to the Cognition ROM, it's because of how Rogers/FIDO do a timestamp adjustment in addition to your phone doing a timestamp adjustment.
You can either have your timezone changed, or download SMS time fix from the market.
Had the same problem myself!

Below are the steps I used to restore the AOSP Email app. designgears had added the AOSP Email client to earlier ROMS but reverted to the TW Email app because of too many complaints. I found that the AOSP Email app is much more reliable than the TW. You should be able to perform similar steps to install a different messaging apk. Let me know if this helps at all. I altered the instructions to the mms.apk instead of the Email.apk that I replaced.
1.) Find the messaging .apk file from the rom of your choice. Usually in /system/app/ folder.
2.) Connect your phone to the computer and move the mms.apk file you retrieved from the other rom to the root of your sdcard.
3.) Backup your current mms.apk with Titanium or manually copy it to another location on your phone.

The lengthy process to get drive working for me..
USAN03 said:
Okay so as far as drive is concerned.. Youll need to delete documentsUI apk and the drive apk. Also you need to place the correct .so files into system/libs. You need to locate the lib files first and type .bak afterwards. Then the lib file that you download below needs to be placed into the folder. I recommend deleting orginal apks, restarting phone, then do the .bak for libs, and then copy over the lib files to the system/lib and restart phone. Extract the drive lib zip, open folder, then copy over the libs to system/libs. When you copy over verify that the .so is the same exact size as they were downloaded. They should not be 0.00. Then change permissions to -rw-r--r-- And restart phone.
** Here is a screen record to show you lib files...

Youre right about the gmail app. As far as the cal apk i had to uninstall the google app and cal storage apk then restart the phone.
Is this for only this phone or any android phone ? Also how can I uninstall the system apps like the calendar and others
Your phone has to be rooted in order to delete system apps and as far as other phones I don't see why it wouldn't work. I believe the only requirement is android 4.4.4
In messenger if I press attach icon it fc.

Hey guys,
I installed the calendar from Lilipop 5.0 and it is giving me a heck of a lot of issues.
The way that I installed was:
Note that I did not have Google Calendar installed before, only the Samsung Calendar.
1. Convert to user app: Calender 4.4.4, Calendar 1.0, Calendar 1.0 (yes I have 2 of them), and Google Calendar Sync
2. Backup / Verify / Uninstall all 4 items
3. Put the new calendar apk file in System/Priv-Apps and rebooted the phone
It installed upon boot up but worked poorly.
I now want to go back to the old calendar, so I
1. Converted to user app: Google Calendar 5.0
2. Backup / Verify / Uninstall
3. Reboot
4. Go to Play Store and download current available Google Calendar
After installation, it crashes on me and does not work. I restored Google Calendar Sync which I removed before, but still not working.
Can anyone please assist with this.
I didnt install this, but when you put the new .apk into place, did you make sure the permissions were set the same way the old file was?
its sounds like that might be your problem...

I think I just set it to 766. All 3 options check for the first column, and the other two columns are blank.

look in the folder(s) where you replaced files, and make sure the files you put in there have the same exact permissions as the other ones that are in there..if you change anything , save then reboot and see if that helps.
if not, I am not sure what else it could be..sorry..

I'm looking for a way to replace the system apps with their AOSP counter part.
E.g. dialer, email, contacts etc.
Does someone know if it's possible for all apps or are their any problems to be expected?
And second question, is there probably a flash able zip for this?
I'd be curious to know as well. Coming from a Nexus device I hate Sony's attempts to "improve" the basic apps like dialer and messaging. They all look like they were designed in 1998.
That should be possible....

I think at the moment there is no available zip. You need CWM for your idea - do you have your phone rooted ?
If so there should be a possiblity to create such a flashable zip , that erase the not needed apps and install the new apps...
If your phone is not rooted maybe a batch file could do the trick via ADB for you - in a first step it should block the not wanted apps and in a second step it should install the new apps.
So you need the Names of the packages / apps that should be erased and before that, you should find the AOSP-Apps that run on the Z3C.

Yes it's rooted.
I would be happy too, to replace the dialer & contact apps with AOSP ones.

Collecting of required information
Hi folx,
in this post i try to get all required information to replace the not wanted SONY stuff by the desired stuff mostly AOSP.
Your phone should be rooted and CWM should be installed.
Then we have to build a fitting flashable zip file.
But to succeed we fist need to test if the wanted apps will work on our phone. (i will test for example: Dialer from CM11)
If these Apps work, then we should have a deeper look on the creating of such a flashable.zip file. I have found a lot of howtos in the web. But to be sure we should backup those SONY-Apps
Here are 2 links i would use:
http://www.android-hilfe.de/root-hacking-modding-fuer-lenovo-ideapad-a1/268272-how-cwm-update-zips-erstellen.html german
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721680 english here at XDA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2764533 this can also be useful
The updater - script within this zip-file could be adjusted to our needs. Deleting the not wanted Sony.apps from /system /app and replace them with the wanted Apps. If i find the time i could provide such a file - but i can't test it.
The simple Trick:
But you could do it more simple - you just need a root explorer (i prefer ES File Explorer). Go to the above mentioned folder /system/app or system/private. There you should find the not wanted apps. Just copy them in a backup folder on your sdcard, delete the sony apk in the system - partition, copy your desired apk in the folder, where you have deleted the Sony-apk, give the right permissions and then reboot.
If the new app fails - just delete it in the same manner as described above and copy the backupped app in the corresponding folder and check the permissions again. - reboot.
I would really appreciate posting your results and if there are any further questions.... do not hesitate - we are all here to learn and get our phone better
Cheers
Rhonin
I probably have time to test this on the weekend.
I'll let you know how it goes.
I copied over Contacts, Contacts Prvovider and the Dialer apks.
However I couldn't get them to work.
Neither the Contacts nor the Dialer app showed up in the app drawer.
Email didn't work either.
Deskclock works fine. I'd love dialler to work...
