I'm really really confused about some concepts of the Android OS mounting system.
What is the "/emmc" path? Is it the internal memory mount point or the external?
What does "/sdcard" represent?
Why are they different when the device is in recovery mode than normal?
Please someone shed some light here.
Thanks.
Different Roms use different mount points. For example internal sd is mounted as /sdcard0 in cm10.1 and external sd as /sdcard1.
Samsung prefers /sdcard as internal and /emmc as external. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.
About the recoveries I don't know. I had a rom which exchanged to internal and external cards in recovery but I don't think that's relevant here
/emmc is embedded multimedia card, so this must be the internal,
/sdcard i believe is also the internal, as it is formatted with a few partitions, space for the /system (ROM) space for the recovery and space for the apps.
i believe they are different in recovery because in recovery it will show its correct name and path (mainly for developers) where as under settings it just shows sdcard because thats what the user will see, and not everyone knows the correct terminology for this so its easier to understand.
then again...what do i know ?? im just making this $hit up lol
Ok.
Let me ask it this way.
How one can know which mount point stands for which hardware entity?

I fail to see why this is different than your previous question ?
Anyways, now you've made me confused too !
For example I'm using Slimbean 4.2.1 beta 1 right now and here's what I found out:
First up, root explorer says the external sdcard is mounted as /extSdCard and the internal (the available internal memory w//o the system partition as azzledazzle pointed out as /sdcard.

}
But, Solid explorer says that these two are just links to /sdcard1 for external and /sdcard0 for internal.
As you can see, both are links to /sdcard1 (for external) and /sdcard0 (for internal) respectively. Going to /storage and longpressing on SD card bring it up as mounted under /sdcard1
OI file manager also shows the same results (but unfortunately not the linking part, just that /extSdCard and /storage/sdcard1 are the same place & /sdcard and /storage/sdcard0 are the same.)
The /extSdCard serves no purpose (I think) as MX player ignores it totally.(Don't go for the highlighted fairy tail, there's a folder sdcard1 down the list !)
CWMR uses the /sdcard for external and /emmc for internal. How that comes to be, I've no idea...bcoz according to Root explorer there is no partition such as /emmc although there is /sdcard ,which incidentally, links to internal sdcard as shown above.
I dunno how to take screenshots in CWMR so I can't post the screenshots.(Is that even possible ? I mean, taking screenshots while in CWMR ?)
Can anybody else help us out ?
I really appreciate your input. What I meant by my question was to have concrete way to know what device is mounted where per each ROM.
So according to you there is no organized system in mounting each memory and it's a total mess!

Wait, I just downloaded a Touchwiz ROM.Let me see if there are any differences.....
Okay, now I'm running Slimwizz(or something like that)
Anyways, here is what I got
AnTek Explorer
No /extSdCard present.
/storage/sdcard0------->Internal
/storage/extSdCard---->External
CWMR gives the same results i.e.
/emmc----->Internal
/sdcard---->External
So I gues it can be safely assumed that CWMR is giving consistent results and hence is right ?
Still doesn't explain what use does the /extSdCard link does in AOSP roms.
some kernels have it swapped, be carefull wiping those.

Hey everybody, I just switched to using MIUI as my daily driver, but the A2SD+ feature does not seem to be working with my sd card. How do I check to make sure that my partition is formatted correctly (i.e. ext3 not 2 or 4) and if it is formatted correctly, what do I do?
Thanks in advance,

If it's there, you could download a terminal and run the command "a2sd repair" to repair it.

I ran this, without su command everything failed, with su command all non-system apps were made so the file was there on the phone but the app wasn't, and even though it said that I had over 100mb of free space for apps, whenever I tried to download an app, it said that it failed due to "insufficient storage". I just did a clean install of 1.5.27 (i heard 1.6 has an issue with theme manager) and it says I have 155mb of internal memory, and a2sd+ shows available space 1.88gb with available space at 1.84gb. Isn't the a2sd+ partition supposed to act like part of the internal memory, and as such be represented by a higher amount of free space for applications (in settings->programs->manage applications)? Should I just use a market app such as A2SDGUI - Darktremor?
Thanks,
Liam
Here's what I've done since the previous post.
I installed A2SDGUI from the market and moved my dalvik cache to the SD-EXT from internal memory. I also found out through A2SDGUI that my partition is ext3, which only further confuses me because ext3 partitions are meant to work seamlessness with MIUI a2sd+.
Now instead of having 180mb of storage space for apps, it shows (in settings->programs->manage applications) that I have about 200mb of storage. This is confirmed by going to settings->system->sd card settings and now the total space of a2sd+ is 1.79gb, with available space being 1.58gb (the 20mb difference). These findings are also corroborated by A2SDGUI.
My question now is how do I get the rest of my partition working with a2sd+? Do I rebuild dalvik cache, do I turn off JIT, do I change the dalvik VM heapsize?
Again thanks in advance,
Liam
I don't understand what the problem is: your apps are on the ext3 partition

only thing is that a2sd+ doesn't add the ext3 space to the internal space.
I believe data2ext (or some other version of that) does add it to the internal space, so it will say 2gb of internal space.
FYI, you shouldn't make your ext partition that big, it could be unstable then. 1GB is more than you'll need for a while, as you can see now (1.58GB free space).
1.79GB - 1.58GB = 215 MB

Lol, my bad, thanks.
Ok, so I decided that my ext partition must be messed up because every time I did something with it, weird things happened. So I flashed amonra, reformated my ext3 partition to 1.5gb with 32mb swap, and moved the dalvik cache as well as app data to the partition. Everything is working great now.
hey guys im making this thread cus androidboss dint know how to do this and im mkaing it easier for him(might help others too so )
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DEAD SDCRADS PHONES LAPTOPS DESKTOPS AND ANYTHING ELSE
requirements
-windows computer
-phone with swiftdroid or any rom that supports inti.d boot scripts
-recovery 5.0.2.3
1. backup all sdcard stuff to computer.
2. wipe all data from the sdcard. after that use this to remove all partitions from sdcard( if you do not have any other partitions on sdcard skip to the end bellow the last picture)
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
the pics will look may look different cus im using a older version
mine looks like this

}
to remove all the other partitions
when all is done click apply at the top lefthand corner. at the end after it refreshes make sure there is only one partition left . the FAT32 partition.
so now the card has no data put it in the phone and boot into recovery(5.0.2.3). there go to advance>partition sdcard>EXT size 2M(2M if you dont want a ext partition but if you want then the size is up to you )>swap size 256m
power down the phone and put back data into the sdcard. now enjoy swap
well this is my first thread so hope it helps!!

I use this method more than 2 or 3 month, thats nothing new. Mur4ik Swiftdroid roms use this method, automatically find&use SD card's swap partition.
Before that, i made a video for my 2.1 Ultimate rom, how to partition SD card under windows to use swap&ext partition. (I use swapper for swap and joe's autoapp2SD in my ROM) Sometimes it not possible because compatibility problems between win&card readers but newer CWM recoveries able to partition cards.
yeah like i said androidboss did not know how to do this so i made this. others may also find is useful so why not make it public ??

Im quite a newbie in this, how exactly does swap and ext porticions work and what do they do ?
the memory card you are using is in a fat32 format so by partition it to let say a ext3 file type you can store apps on it(if im not wrong the phone's memory is also ext3) swap works as addition external ram used to run apps

What could have caused the problem?
Thanks in advance!

look in root explorer (or any root file manager), in folder etc/init.d
if there isnt script called 07swapon, the swap wont active. and afaik, mike's ics doesnt have this script. u must add it manually.

How can I open *.img files so I can get the 07swapon file?
Can you give me the download link for swapon file?
Hi, I updated my phone with the CM10 nightlies and all is working great so far! I'm still getting used to of the new way of mounting the storage partitions, as now the phone uses primarily the internal storage card, which is better for me.
The problem is, that on some apps I'm having trouble using my SD card.
When I navigate to /storage, most apps don't show up anything (neither sdcard0 nor scard1), but navigating to /sdcard does take me to /storage/sdcard0. This happens even if the app has root access.
Is there any way to change this, or create a link(like /sdcard -> /storage/sdcard0 to /extsdcard -> /storage/sdcard1)
This is what I see on Titanium Backup:

I've tried changing permissions to Read Write and Execute for all three groups to Storage but still got no luck. System doesn't allow me to change permissions to sdcard1 directly.
Apollo and Titanium still can't access the external sd. Any other ideas?

This seems to have done it for me. I enabled full read permissions and only owner write, I left execute as is (all checked) and now Titanium can write and read to my external sd, so no more storage woes for me!

It might be that those apps are looking for the external sd in the wrong (old) symlinks. See if the following will help you

FINALLY A SOLUTION!
I recalled reading a RC's post that skipping CM7 could cause issues. Actually, he mentions it in the CM10 launch thread, first post.
So I re-installed a stock ROM, installed CM7 wiped data/cache, installed CM10 wiped dalvik, fixed permissions and now it all runs great!
Let's hope it lasts! If it doesn't all try your idea Aragorn.
Thanks a bunch
if you go to the settings > general settings > advanced > access mode and change it to root access mode it will let you go into your external sd card without having to edit in shortcuts hope it works for everyone :victory:
i have sgm running on jellybread rom(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106187). according to the instructions"
- dont use apps2sd! (like s2e, darktremor, etc.). if you want to move app to sd-ext..
go to Settings > Apps > Manage application > tap the application you want to move >
Move to sd-ext" however when i did that it said not enough storage available
( i have ext 3, 1 gb partition) when i went to storage settings it said under sd-ext unavailable
i did a nandroid backup and then flashed the jba2sdx script now internal memory shows 1gb and sd ext shows 178 mb.
can i keep it like this? why (earlier) was sd ext not showing?
thanks!
btw is there any way to find out if this rom has init.d support?

well its working without any lag or anything no errors (yet). but do i have to keep apps in internal memory only?
currently in storage option, there a the folowing:
SD CARD
total space-13.8gb
available space- 4.64 gb(thts all my stuff)
SD-ext
total space-178 mb
available-130 mb
INTERNAL STORAGE
tottal space- 0.94gb
available space-4.04mb (this was after just 19 apps)
that's why im asking how to clear that internal memory? when i go to manage applications there are options move to sd-ext and move to sd card.
what should i do?
I think your internal memory is still 178mb and system is thinking that sd-ext is internal (but it's not)
i would say system is reporting wrong info
ok in terminal type busybox df and paste the result here

uh...firstly that's coz i removed all those app (i did the nandroid backup to get the screenshots before jba2sd)
and im not sure if im explaining what i need properly....what i mean is that when apps are stored on internal memory they take up a lot of space...minimum 10mb (these are the small apps) and some of these start taking even 80 mb and stuff.....since i am using the jba2sdx script can i use the move to sd card option in manage applications or it will cause lag and stuff.?
and secondly why does sd ext show unavailable before flshing and after flahing becomes 178mb?
maybe jba2sdx script interchange your internal with sd-ext
you can try that option
just don't use much apps

Ok, chewed up and ready for quick digestion:
So 8GB version is leaving you with ~4,64GB for W/E you want to put/install there.
16Gb ver. should be ~12,64GB...
It's all clear if you read the specs and know how any smartphone is working.
Even more chewed up and ready to digest faster:
That is the internal system memory available to USER. Said that, it means you can use that potion of internal memory for purposes like storage or installations. If it does not suffice, toss in a 8/16/32gb MicroSD card and store photos/videos/music there thus leaving the internal memory for installations only. Do the same for the various caches etc, and clean up from time to time.

It has three storages.... The first is for apps installation (it's the /data partition), the second is to storage of photos, videos, etc (is the /sdcard partition), and the third is same as second (it's hte /sdcard-ext partition)
As you said, i can expand the S3 mini partition with a sd card, so i understand that you are talking about the /sdcard partition and it can be expanded with the /sdcard-ext partition, but i want to know how much is the /data partition size... If you say that i can install 4.65Gb of apk's, it's ok for me, but now i'm confused....
Here you can see the /data partition of my D3, 660Mb used, 348 Mb free, total 1Gb of internal storage for apps.... This is what i want to know...
Thanks...

If you read says that has 16 Gb internal storage.... I will bring you some caps of my phone....
Here you can see my storage memory

Thanks...

But I do understand, just you pone a question in a way that seem a bit odd (NHF all the way) thinking all of them are the same when actually they're not
Your D3 is like my SGS II (My wife has a SGS III Mini) It has a dedicated system storage, then (USB) internal storage and also expandable external storage, am I right?
See this scr from my phone:
SGS III Mini has only one option available instead system and internal. It's all in one, thus you get something like this (MiscroSD is a secondary storage, and can be used as as internal memory on your D3, but not as a data partition on your D3, with an addition S III Mini can store huge potions of files/game/apk data on that one - like with huge games from the store - like your D3 is storing on SD and not EXT SD. IMHO - this is the way it should be):
and it's that proclamed 8Gb on S III Mini, or better said - what it has left in real time conditions of internal system memory so you simply have to accept the fact you can push it to that limit Simply means you have that memory to do whatever you want with it - be it apps/games or media :good:
See this scr from SGS III Mini compared to my SGS II if in need for more :
Cheers,
Fevv.
Thank you a lot!!!! Now i understand it!!! What you said was just what i need!!!
