So I just wanted to post my alternative to wifi calling since most of our JB roms are the best roms for this phone but most users divert from using them because there is no wifi calling...
My fix is pretty simple actually, I just set my primary voicemail to Google voice, so that all my missed calls from either one goes to my google voice voicemail, this way when people call me Ill be able to get a notification through wifi instead of through data when i have no single.. I know its not the same as being able to receive calls but it notifies you when you have a call.
Next I just downloaded the vonage app which lets you make free calls to USA numbers and I think canada.. So after I get a voicemail notification, I just call the number back.
Feel Free to post your alternatives to wifi calling in this thread, i would love to see other ways users live with out it
Now this only works if they leave a voicemail. so dont expect google to just notify you every time you get a call.
This is just my simple fix for having no wifi calling.. i figure if they dont leave a voicemail.. then their call wasnt that important..
As a Canadian, I've never had the advantage of T-Mobile's wifi calling, however we have our own alternative which isn't too bad at all. Fongo (formerly Dell Voice). A good internet connection is required though, otherwise you may experience lag and/or low quality calls. On the plus side, you get a new phone number in any locale you want. Most of Canada is covered. So for instance, if you're in Vancouver and have family in Toronto, it makes sense to get a Toronto number so they can call you without incurring long distance charges (exactly what I do ). You can even set it up so calls dialed to that Toronto number get forwarded to your actual Vancouver number. Pretty nifty! They have a texting option as well, however that will cost you. Voicemail is included, and is free!
As far as free text messaging goes (and incoming calls, so long as you don't want to spend any money), a great service covering both the US and Canada is Pinger. Once again, you get a brand new phone number, though not as important for texting. The app itself can integrate your carrier's calls and texts, too, if you so choose (enabled by default - I typically disable it).
Fortunately, for me wifi calling isn't make or break. The bars here are generally 'good enough'. But...
An interesting (though maybe too much of a work around for most) would be to simply fully back up the official rom with wifi calling and your custom rom and then you can switch between them. Need wifi calling at work? Wipe and restore to the official rom after you get there. Want the custom rom at home, just wipe and restore that backup.
I know it works with Clockworkmod's backup and restore as that is what I use with swaping atm to test battery usage between roms. A restore brings back everything exactly how it was left.
(Perhaps the only real issue would be to be done with any OS specific changes. If you insall a new app and want to keep it then another backup would be required or it would not be there next time. Other things like contacts, calendar via google syncing isn't a problem as it just syncs changes between them via wifi. No need to do backups for that* - just wipe and restore any time. Also, the amount of space/time could be a problem if someone has too much stuff.)
*Point to point out, if anything is changed in the restored rom which affects goole sync before google is finished syncing then that could cause something to not be synced and thus lost forever. Unsure which side would lose. Haven't run into it personally. Backups are always good regardless.
Other than that, I just ordered cables for usb otg which on my phone requires the official rom (or a rom based off of it). So I want to see how that goes and may [continue] to do the swapping of roms for that. For me and how I use the phone its not a problem.
Another idea... would be to simply have another phone with wifi calling and do sim card swapping.

yeah ive been plagued with this dilemma as well.. right now i just use the CM9 which has T-Mobile wifi calling. however the calling barely works (just shows call screen then beeps to disconnect) it does do the texting 95% of the time.
i do have the tmobile visual voicemail so it alerts me if i get a voicemail.
i thought about using google voice but it looked to want to import my number and i was afraid it mess up the regular carrier..
i dont like using the apps that assign a different number so i think im stuck with ICS until someone hacks it into JB..

I'm not sure I understand your question . Are you looking to live without wifi or find solutions to solve bad wifi?
I had a lot of trouble with wifi calling until I did this:
[ROM] RemICS-JB 3.0.1 - The most stable, light and reasonably fast ROM I could get onto my phone
Set up Google Voice account (actually GApps but not relevant)
Install GrooveIP
Configure properly - The startup and answer on calls settings help integrate it seamlessly into your daily calling
Now you have inbound outbound calling, and with a decent connection it's very clean with rare hiccups
I trield Talkatone for a while and while at first it seemed to work out of the box better, I had issues with it over time.
So I went back to GIP and fiddled with settings after reading a lot. Because it works directly over Google Talk protocol and not GVoice, it is more stable and offers a better connection.

I converted to Grand Central (with Gizmo) several years ago before Google acquired it, so I'm very familiar with Voice and have been using it successfully for years.
I also use an Obi202 device ($75 for life) that lets my standard house phone make/receive calls on up to 4 GVoice numbers, or other VOIP services (like callcentric, etc.)
So my GVoice numbers ring multiple devices. One caveat is that GrooveIP on android interferes with the ringing on Obi device so I turn it off when I'm in office-desk mode. But I think this is off-topic

Im still in the testing phase... but MIUI ICS has the tmobile wifi calling working very well.
(Note it wasn't pre loaded so i did a full app and data backup of wifi calling via titanium backup and restored it after flashing new ROM)

Wifi calling still is sketchy.. didnt call last night.. just beeps and hangs up. But i have noticed it starts each time i connect to wifi unlike CM9 where i would have to click the app

I have recently thought of leaving sprint because of there embarrassing services and was wondering if i can still use my hero with out a service provider??? if there was a program i could run on it?? I have so much money into my phone and would hate to not use it. i believe i can use the wifi part for data not sure?? but i want to make cals n stuff is there and type of hack i can use i am using fresh toast2.1. with a radio update. Thank You for the help. Sprint truely does not know how to run a company and man i bought my phone for full price!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP ME PLEASE

The phone doesn't just stop powering on after you cancel your service.
There are some illegal things you could do to bring it to another carrier... you can always use Data on wifi. I have read of some people using it for a simple PDA/Media player when they are done with it.
I for one am 100% happy with sprints customer service and cell service. Updating the phone could have happened quicker, but hey what do you do.
They have yet to do me wrong. Best cell company I have ever worked with and a heck of a good price.
When I left Verizon and told them I was going to Sprint and told them the price, the retentions department didn't even put up a fight because they knew they couldn't touch Sprints price.

You may be able to use Google Voice over Wifi to place calls, but I am not sure. I doubt you would be able to recieve them since the registered phone number would be disconnected.
And my tethering with Spint is 3 times faster than it was with Verizon, and I acutally paid verizon the extra 15 a month for it....huge waste.
you could use skype to make calls over wifi
otherwise you will just have a PDA

That's a no-go Ghost Ryder. I'm currently service-less and Google Voice won't route over Wifi for calls, SMS will however. Now, if you set up the proper SIP accounts, you can use your Google Voice account through those SIPs to make and receive calls via Sipdroid. Google will pull up how-to's.
As for those lesser than legal matters, that's what I'm about to do myself. Ever done it first hand?

Nope, but it doesn't look too complicated from what I have seen.
Depending on who you flash too MMS may recieve but not send, and Data may/not work.
Seems like some poeple are using better cut to route proxy info stuff through opera to achieve data.
I went through the same type of thing when I went from my touch pro to the hero. I still wanted to use my touch pro as a dedicated gps since at the time there werent any decent ones available on android. anyways, I had then went and set up a similar thing for making calls via the wifi using GV, sipgate, and I believe it was fring....I forget. Basically I would go on my phone browser to google voice, initiate the call from the website, then fring would ring on my touch pro and finish connecting the call. lawl, I just set up my brother's fiance's phone to do that since she is going to Germany for the summer this weekend...so she and my bro can talk for free (though she needs wifi which her dorm over there will have)
Ya, I definitely hear ya about Sprint.....it's funny, I get so so service in my house, yet about 2 miles down the road is a sprint store and as soon as I pull out onto the main drag BAAAAAM insta full signal >.<

Here is a quick how to for the easiest way to accomplish the free calls thing via wifi. It's a little dated but the info is still good me thinks. The only thing is that you'd have to go to google.com/voice on your phone and (thankfully having all contacts synced to google) initiate the call/sms from there. To get it so you can actually dial out from the phone would require ALOT more configuring and can be annoying. So try this first, make sure it works and then if you want to get more jiggy with it, then figure out the whole "SIPSORCERY.com" thingy.

Thank You i am going to try and run the sipdroid and google voice idea i kinda wish there was a app too pick up a wi fi signal with increase strenght so i can use my phone everywhere instead of just home and local buisnesses lol. no dice there my friend haha, here is a thought. think of the phone as a cordless phone for home also, just keep in mind that the audio quality isn't going to be 100%. There will be a delay, there will be some compression artifacts, but hey at least its a free alternative to home phone right?
EDIT: being in a strong wifi environment will DEFINITELY help with quality as it has more umph to work with
i noticed when i read the how to guide u posted thaqt airplane mode will disable the cdma radio did it work so i can keep my battery lol?

Well I'm actually not switching carriers. I was on a family plan, then a divorce hits, and everyone is refusing to pay the delinquent bill - point being, my phone is tied to that account and can't be used on any other account until the bill is paid. So, I'm hoping to sprinkle some voodoo magic on my Hero, then slap it on a new account with the same carrier.
I dont see why you dont convert the phone over to cricket service (if you have it) and just pay 35 dollars for talk and web. I mean minus well right?
Hey Devs I could really use your help in this matter. Here is the deal, I would like to find a way to be able to make free phone calls using my Captivate while deployed to Iraq/Kuwait. I will be leaving soon and would like some help with a "be all" solution. I use ATT but I don't think that really matters for what I am wanting to accomplish. I have searched all over the internet and I see a bunch of way to do this...in USA. I can't seem to find a way that will work in Iraq. I have tried to use a combo of Sipgate + Google Voice but I read somewhere that google voice only works in USA and the steps that are used appear to be for a past version of the phone app and i can't seem to get it to work correctly. I don't have a lot of time to try and figure this out because I leave very soon. If anybody knows of the steps needed to allow free cell phone calls over Wifi in the middle east, please help me out.

Skype can call mobile and land lines. You just need to have credit. I know its not free. But there really is no free way to make calls over wi-fi.
**Edit: at least not any good means.
Google Voice only really works to US *numbers*, but the free inbound you get from Sipgate One is a US number, so it works.
The only problem is latency and variable call quality, but if you're half a world away people should be understanding...
For apps I suggest Xinlu's Google Voice Callback and CSipSimple.
Ummm ive been to kuwait and the wifi over there is not good enough to be making calls on ur phone via wifi best bet is skype or other services and or just get a local sim card over there and make cell calls and also u should just use the free dsn lines they have over there.

I'm re-visiting the idea of sip and/or some voip option. Google voice is great, but uses airtime. What's everyone doing for free data/3G/Wifi calling with voip? The phone companies are charging ridiculous prices for basic service and would like to mostly make outbound calls that don't require airtime or use minutes.

Sipdroid will tie in your Google Voice number and set up a pbxes account to route calls through VoIP. It works pretty good.
Or get the app mentioned in one of the 7 threads about this exact same topic already. I can't remember what its called, but its an all-in-one tool. No csipsimple and/or pbxes necessary.

Same here, GrooveIP work great over 3g or wifi and does NOT use minutes.

i spent the last day downloadin every friggin app they have and groove ip was the only one that just worked without needin a PhD, and it didnt mess with everything else on my phone either.
the one thing i haven't figured out is how to get incoming calls to my google voice number to ring on my phone. i can do outgoing calls just fine, and i get incoming text messages. but incoming calls to my google voice go straight to voicemail.
im hopin i just have a setting wrong somewhere that eventually i will find and correct, but free outgoing calls is good enough for now i guess

Try this, go into the Google Voice settings (on PC) and make sure that the Do Not Disturb is off and also turn off Screen Callers.

yeah, i found the "call screening" setting previously and was hoping that was why but it had no effect. i did verify that the do not disturb is unchecked as well
i did find one thing i had overlooked, under the "fowarding phones - foward calls to:" i unchecked the actual number of my cell phone (the one provided by at&t, as in my "real" cell phone number).
i was thinking that having calls fowarded to my actual cell number would defeat the whole purpose, essentially just fowarding the free google voice calls to my cell as a normal incoming call and therefore using my minutes.
knowing more now then i did then about how google works by "intercepting" the calls, i'm guessing this is probably what i did wrong...

Actually, if you are using groove ip, you have to have incoming calls set to ring Google chat in your Google voice settings. And then anytime you're signed onto groove ip, calls will come to you.

I am always amazed at how freaked out people get over privacy issues. Do you really think that google is going to take the time to listen in on my calls? Or read my emails? Or look at my calendar? What about what your bank does with all your transaction details? Or your ISP with all the sites you visit? Or your telephone company with all your phone records and the possibility of them illegally recording your phone calls, or at the very least, tracking where you are calling?
There are countless entities that keep "private" information. Apparantly, we have total faith in the other ones I mentioned, but somehow think that Google is out to get all of us and wants our first-born child? I really don't think Google cares about all the text messages I send my brother about geeking out with random tech bits, or when I call my mom using GrooVeIP from Germany, or all emails I get from youtube people asking me to subscribe to them, or knowing that I have a weekly thing called Institute that happens Wednesday nights at 7:30PM because it is on my calendar. What are they going to do with this information? Are they going to try and create a robot clone of me to take over my life?
The point is that there is a ton of information about YOU out there and a ton of different companies have it. And they have had it long before google ever came around. If you are really concerned about your information being held by 3rd party companies, you better figure out a way to live completely self-sustained.

Well, there is an app but it doesn't use your regular phone number. It's called GrooVe IP. The app costs like 4 bucks on the market, but it's a complete VOIP application. It uses your Google Voice account to place the calls. There is a setup tutorial in the application description. I'm sure you could find the APK on other sites, but I'm not sure if it requires cracking or if you can just get the APK and install it.
I use Tango. It uses your email address to make VOIP calls (with video). Totally free and is also available for iOS. I use it to call my son on the other side of the country on his iPod touch.

I've heard many good things about sipdroid too. I'm going to try setting it up on my deactivated htc eris. Supposedly works with google voice over wifi. I'll report back after I get it all working.

If you have a google voice # you can use a application called 'grooveIP'. Uses either wifi or mobile data to dial out through google voice. Been using it for over a month now and works well. Obviously the better the connection the better quality.

Tango does not give you a phone number, it uses your email address. I'm pretty sure it only works with people that also have the app.

Is there a way to make VoIP calls through Android Auto? I read some threads on a different website that said Hangouts Dialer is not supported (yet?), but I'm wondering if there is another way to use VoIP through AA?
I am a Sprint customer on an unlimited everything plan that costs me only $60/month after all the taxes and fees. I get good coverage in my home area and for the most part wherever I've been traveling. Ive been out of contract for sometime, but my galaxy S4 is starting to feel a bit dated. Unfortunately all the new Sprint phones are Tri-band Spark models and don't support simultaneous voice and data unlike my current phone. I just got the Pioneer AVH 4100NEX and I'm loving Android Auto. I frequently use Google Maps when in the car for a long period of time and if I were to upgrade to a new Sprint Spark phone I'd lose the ability to have it running while taking calls in the car. THe only work-around I can think of would be to use a VoIP dialer so that my calls are also via data...
The answer to your question is no. With that said, Maps caches a fair amount of data when navigating, so unless you're on the phone for long periods of time (or try to reroute during a call) you should be good.
Also note Maps now allows you to cache specific areas to your phone which can be used offline for navigation and routing.
Ill try giving the google maps cache thing a try, but I see the potential problem of my crappy galaxy S4's storage capacity being an issue if saving a significant amount of data. Its only 16GB and less than 9GB of that is usable space with the barebones installation - much of that which I've used up with apps that I routinely use. Fortunately it looks like there are several supported apps with either free or cheap ($3/mo) voice data calling available that work with AA. Whether these would work with my native number so as to be a viable option when people are calling my cell number I'm not sure... Text Me, textPlus, Skype, ICQ video calls & chat are currently available so I'll have to check those out. Another option I guess would be to get AppRadio unchained reloaded and use that instead of AA

I don't think Google has made ANY* statements/promises about future features in Android Auto. But feel free to ask them on Google+ or where-ever.
*Only exception I can think of is a positive response to a question about somehow integrating Waze into AA. But no timeline for that.

The long answer is YES, but limited:
Try this: Install AA and WhatsApp in you mobile. Start the AA in your HU as regular. Then, with you mobile connected and with MOBILE screen (type multi-tasking button) and open the WhatsApp in the mobile... then make a VOIP call...
Then you show that at this moment the Bluetooth of the HU routes the call, and the AA in the screen show the call... All as a regular voice call.
Then the only missing feature is that Google needs to include the voice command for VOIP calls (send the command to the message app) and/or using the dialer (agenda).
I hope soon this will included by default!

Thanks for the reply. I'll try this out today and see if that works with my setup. When you say that the calls will be made "All as a regular voice call" you mean that the process of answering/making calls is similar to voice call? I'm hoping that it still would use the WhatsApp VoIP data service because thats the main reason I'd want to use this feature.
Is the reason why you use this method because you also have Sprint and don't have simultaneous voice an data??
Sadly this is still an issue 14 months later, and yes, it's because of Sprint's refusal to allow simultaneous data/voice...
Did WhatsApp solve the problem for you? Is there anything new that would work? I love using AA (phone only, not car) but losing data isn't always an option.

I actually ended up switching to T-Mobile almost exclusively for this reason. I found a good deal with them that allows unlimited music streaming (which works out great with Android Auto) and now I don't have to worry about being able to use voice/data at the same time while I'm driving on longer trips (i.e. using Google Maps, listening to Google Play Music, and get a voice call at the same time). I am using my Google Voice number and get Hangouts messages passed through Android Auto and use the default dialer with my GV number as well.
