Best ROM as of right now?

Whats the best rom available right now for the N1? I haven't tested my N1 with anything in a while been running MIUI but I'm finding it to be sort of laggy now with apps installed.

Fastest? Hmm, pretty much any CM7 self-kang.

I use now ICS by samuaz, it's fast and really stable. But it's an alpha version!
When you think it's important to have a stable rom, then
use CM7. CM7 roms are as stable as stock, but better ;-)

worth upgrading to ICS or JB?
hello. I realize this thread hasn't been active in a while, but I am thinking to bring back my Nexus One from the grave so I can have a backup phone for my daughter to play with in the car/plane. I wanted to ask if it is worth installing ICS or JB ROMs that are out there. I just have the stock ROM in there now and I always struggled with low memory and lag with some newer apps, that's why I've upgraded phones (I've have a Galaxy Nexus now).
I don't have intentions to put a SIM card in there, so I don't really care about phone call features.. only purely from a processing and lightweight standpoint.
Has anybody played enough with GB vs ICS and/or JB and weighed if it's worth upgrading? I'm assuming that it's worth it because so many developers still have Nexus One ROMs... that's why I would just go ahead and install it, but then I'm thinking again if it's just going to bog down the phone if I'm going to only use it for simple games.

Hello! I have installed the CM10.1 VJ Jelly Bean 4.2.2 v6.0 that is based on CyanogenMod and Evervolv, and works fine for me. I also have installed all the /data partition in the SD card with the A2SD script that is incorporated in the ROM... it generates some few lags, but I didn't have had any problem of lack of space again.
In my opinion, this is the ROM of JB that best preserves the native Android interface, and in my case is stable (until 7 days without to require a reboot!).
Other JB ROMs that users frequently use are PARANOIDANDROID and PixelDroid.

Sorry, but I can't help on it. I didn't install any GB ROM further than the stock ROM. In my opinion, I think that a stable, complete and functional ROM might be CyanogenMod 7.2. Maybe other XDA members can help you better on it...

No problem. I'll probably end up trying both out. Thanks again for the response. By the way, what do you use your N1 for now or is that you main phone? I was playing around with it yesterday and I still like it a lot - I always liked the trackball.

This is my main phone. In several times I though changing to other new Nexus device, but the screen size of new devices is too big for me! I like a screen size from 3.7 to 4.0, that is good to read mails, a brief navigation in the Internet, and other minor issues. For other intensive uses, I have my tablet Nexus 10 or my laptop.

is ics faster then gingerbread ?

hello everyone.
i have just one question. are ics custom roms any faster or smoother then the gingerbread custom roms ?
i'm currently on surface 9.1 with the latest semaphore kernel and, other then the lag that occurs after a few days, it's fast and smooth in every aspect. and, really the lag doesn't concerns me because a simple restart takes care of that.
i don't care about enhanced multitasking or face unlock or any other of the gimmicks that came with the ics just about the speed and stability of the rom.
current combo is great, but most of (if not all) devs are working on ics roms, and, in some way, i feel left out.

just debating whether to install ics 4.0.3 , I have been running 2.3.6 , with semaphore and it has been perfect - whereas ics is definitely more responsive are there any downside/bugs and lack of functionality ?

Yes, but which one? I know people are here like, "Oh try them all it only takes a few minutes to flash", but I'd rather not. I'm not sure how to back things up and I don't want to mess around with all the settings that I have going on now every time I flash.

You will need to have a back up of your EFS folder before flashing to ICS as the IMEI number can be wiped. it is a simple operation to restore but if you have not backed it up first you will be flashing back to gingerbread to recover the EFS folder.
Google backing up IMEI/EFS folder and you should find a guide on how to do this (if not PM me and i will send you a link).
Most of the ICS ROMs are now stable enough for everyday use.
I am personally using ICSSGS 4.2 with semaphore 0.9.1 kernel and it is stable, nice and smooth to use.
If you are not wanting to have a few little issues then have another look in a month or two as there are still some small issues that present themselves to a small number of users. Just search/read the thread for each ROM/Kernel for the known issues and make a decision based on your own reasearch. The threads are long but worth the read to identify issues that would stop you from using ROM X over ROM Y.
We all use our phones differently and then therefore have a different set of required features/stock apps

Could you please explain why you feel that ICS is not faster.
I know that you have a lot of respect on XDA and would greatly appreciate your feedback so that i can understand how it is not faster. Hardware, software limit etc

I was on teamhacksung latest build for while. Currently running on slim 2.8. Definitely smoother than GB.

Gingerbread is much more stable. Speed is about the same. I don't recommend ICS, at least for the time being. Check back 1-2 months later.

The stable ones I have tried so far are Dark knight v3, elite v6 which are ics 4.0.4 versions and codenameandroid 1.4 ics 4.0.3 by daxinfinity.
I know how you feel about flashing and messing up your phone, but if you learn the basics and ask the right questions I'm pretty sure the chances of you bricking your phone is pretty minimal.
Id be pretty happy to help even with my limited knowledge... just send me a pm

If you're a heavy user of the Phone camera don't even think of ICS. Everything else is acceptable but not completely reliable (lots of stability issues and quite a few apps aren't supported .)

Weird. Reading all the ICS threads I haven't come across to something like this. I thought it'd be a simple flash like to Cyanogenmod. Which ROM for ICS has the most updates because I'm sure that's the one that will be the most stable and widely used.

I might have to take you up on that offer, thanks. I know it's not that hard, but I have zero idea of how to do a Nandroid backup and from what you guys are telling me ICS ROMS aren't good enough for day to day use. I hate the odd Force Close so to put up with them more than needed doesn't sound like an advantage for me even though it'd be nice to have 4.0.

This is one of the reasons I wanted to switch. I like the layout and apparently the ICS camera is a lot quicker. What's wrong that you have noticed?

+1... I went back to GB bcoz of the camera, hope fix wil come pretty soon. On ICS when i use 3rd party camera apps, lot of features are disabled and says that the phone is not supported.
Also in stock camera (AOKP M4) there's no option to save to the external sd

[Q] Best rom for a girl

Hi,
I'm moving from Galaxy S to HTC Evo 3D and passing the phone to my girlfriend but before I do that I would like to make the best of it. I would like to ask for your advice what rom to choose. I haven't played around with I9000 roms for quite some time - I tried some early Gingerbread builds but then went back to Froyo for warranty reasons and stayed with it because it was working well enough for my needs. She is not very tech savvy so I would like the rom to be as feature full and bug free as possible.
I see 2 possibilities:
1. Flash the latest "official" Gingerbread (XWJW5/XDJV1/OXXJVC), install root and lagfix (CF-Root and/or Semaphore kernel)
2. Flash one of the ICS roms. From a quick check, the 2 look most promissing (I prefer it to be as close to AOSP as possible):
ICS333
Elite
Personally I would go for ICS (and I will for sure try those two) but remembering that this is going to be for my girlfriend, I'm not so sure. Does all the "normal" stuff work in ICS (like calls, messaging, taking pictures, recording videos, watching videos, tv-out)? From the respective threads it looks like it does but then there might be some small quirks that would make her mad rather than happy with the phone

Thank you for the suggestion Although my girlfriend knows English pretty well, I'm affraid she wouldn't like to use it in her phone on a daily basis... But I will take a look at the rom

If she uses FM radio you should stick her to GB. That´s exactly what I will do in a few months as she uses it a lot. I think the best would be a well-known and bug-free stock GB with a stable kernel.

I would also suggested Slim ICS. My kids loved it.

The FM Radio does not work in ICS? From what I've found, it does but one needs to install Spirit FM application and change its audio output.

Slim ICS is by far the most superior ICS ROM for I9000.

Trust your own research, op, the two roms you listed are aosp, minimalistic and thus less things can go wrong. Of the two I find ICS333 the most stable out of the box. If you want more customizing options, Slim is a great pick.
Edit: reread your post, and the features you list work out of the box with ICS333. Especially tv out can be troublesome on other roms. Note that the froyo and gb video call features are not present in ICS, you'll have to use other solutions.

I've tested ICS333 - it looks and works really great. If I was installing a rom for myself, I would keep it for sure but unfortunatelly it has one BIG missing thing that my girlfriend uses - the FM Radio From what I read, the radio itself is working, but there's no app that can be used except for Spirit FM, which is not free and can break the speaker...
I think I will be installing the official XWJW5 + Semaphore kernel + ext4 lagfix then. Can someone please confirm that the safest way to downgrade from ICS to Gingerbread is to flash it with Odin + repartition?
I have made a backup of Gingerbread in recovery but I guess that the filesystems are different and it wouldn't be safe to restore it.

Out of all the ICS roms that I've tested this one is the most stable and the easiest to use out of the box. Nightlies come out daily so there is always features that are being added, so it depends on when you are planning handing it over.

To sum up: I was a little pressed by time so in the end I went the safe way and installed the latest official rom (XWJW5/XDJV1/OXXJVC) with Semaphore 2.7.4 kernel and conversion of filesystem to ext4 ("lagfix"). The combination runs really well and most importantly - all the phone's features work. My girlfriend is happy about the I9000 but she has used it only for a couple of days so we just have to wait and see if she runs into any issues.
On a side note - ICS333 is a great rom and if I was selecting something for myself, I'd go with it for sure.

Hi, fellow Noters!
I have the N7000 Note, with stock GB ROM installed and only rooted, flashed with abyss kernel.
I am in the UK, so I am considering updating/upgrading to ICS... Now, from most of the posts here I gather that most of custom ICS ROMs aren't yet the most stable and people who installed the official ICS have mixed reactions...
Don't get me wrong- I am completely satisfied with my Note and the functionality of the apps as it is, but was just wondering how much improvement would I see, if I installed ICS...
Also, if I want to install official ICS ROM, do I need to unroot first and then flash it with ICS, or just straight on?

Ics is suffing from the brickbug for now, that is not to mention other issues such as baterry drain. So if you are still satiafied with gb then should hold on unrik tge brixk bug is cleared. Cheers.

If you want to do an update ics stock , you have to flash with odin 1.85 the rom that you prefere..... it is not necessary performing unroot...

I'm still running GB as it's running great. Nothing really worth upgrading to ICS.

Stay with GB. If you desperately wants ICS then flash CM9 or PA.

If you want to stay on a Touchwiz rom, then it may be better to stick with Gingerbread as it has less bugs that the TW ICS counterparts. However I would thoroughly recommend AOKP or CyanogenMod 9 if you truly want ICS; it has almost all features fully working (including camera, tethering and full access to all storage) and are both extremely light and quick. Plus both support themeing and have a wealth of customization options.
As for the brick bug, that has been almost eradicated IF you use a safe kernel such as Speed mod 3.3. Of course the worry is non existent on AOSP roms.

I am in no rush to get to ICS, as pretty much all the visual stuff can be achieved through some extra launchers and themes while still staying with stock GB ROM.
I am pretty much happy with TouchWizz, but find the Go launcher a bit more faster and easier to use. I go to TW only when I need S Memo and that stuff from the suite...
so, until the bug in the official ICS ROM is fixed, or a very stable custom ICS ROM made, I will stick with GB...

I also sometimes mistype words and it is annoying when the result is actually a proper word, so it completely can confuse the recipient of the SMS, for instance...
I wonder if there are alternatives to the current ordering of letters on keyboards, you know-instead of ASDF-JKLsomething...

Can anyone explain to me why the netflix app doesn't work on this ROM. Nothing ever gets displayed. AOKP on droid 4 latest build.

Are you on one of the ICS leaks, or still have a Gingerbread "unsafe" system?
The Gingerbreak/ICS frankenROMs don't have hardware acceleration working properly (due to mismatched kernel). Thus Netflix, Chrome, Opera and anything else like that won't work.

Yeah I have gingerbread/aokp installed right now. So it sounds like I can't have a non safe system, just the ics leak installed. Is that correct? I still can't deside if I want to flash the ics leak or not. AOKP is nice and all with all its extra features, but for whatever reason, they cannot get data to work. Its pretty ridiculous they still don't have 3g/4g working after several months. Should i just go ahead and flash the ics leak?

It really isn't their fault, it is because the kernel is locked. AOKP-based off of the leak (as opposed to the Frankbuilds based on GB) work much better.
I finally jumped to the leak and atm I'm actually using the stock leak and am pretty happy with it. That being said, if you move to the leak you have to be ok with the fact that you might be off the upgrade path forever. The chance of that happening looks to be pretty small, but nobody can rule it out...

I understand its not AOKP's fault. The stuff they are pulling off is pretty advanced. Its just very frustrating from a users end trying to get data to play nice. I dont want to go to stock ICS because I really love the features AOKP has thrown in. And I dont wont to be off the upgrade path either. So will AOKP ever have solid data or are they going to have to take the stock ICS kernal and build a new AOKP ROM from that?

Bottom line is: a locked Bootloader prevents developers from providing a proper Kernel to the device. So, you don't get the HW codecs with a Gingerbread based ICS ROM, therefore no Netflix. If you install any of the leaked ICS builds, Netflix runs just fine (I can confirm)
I guess Motorola says that it's to protect us "in the name of security", but nobody seems to realize that the root exploits in themselves, already breaks that so called "security", so why not just let us have an unlocked bootloader!
Hopefully with the Google acquisition, someone can revisit that policy, and clarify to us users what it actually means. Moto probably loses customers over that policy.

You CAN have a safe system with the ICS leaks installed. You just have to use the Safestrap v 2.00 and ICS Leak build of aokp. AFAIK Netflix and HW Acc. codecs work with the new ICS leak builds!

I would say they lose some of the die hard users, who *need* to have an unlocked boot loader. Just reading through other posts, I have seen many get so frustrated at the fact that Moto won't unlock the boot loader, that they say they won't buy moto products because of it.
I'm just thankful that people have found loopholes that allow us work arounds, but it certainly adds a lot of complexity, that wouldn't be necessary if they would just unlock the boot loader (as they said they would do).
I get Moto's stance that they need to provide support, and if people are loading custom overclocked kernels, it could certainly cause HW damage, if the chip is running at a speed out of specs, but why not have the users sign something giving up that warranty, so they can do with their devices as they wish.
I'm just saying I think they should reconsider their policy of locked boot loaders, and open up their phones to hacker enthusiasts. Heck, Jelly Bean has been announced, and most phones still don't have ICS! I would bet an unlocked boot loader would have gotten ICS into the hands of users much faster, and in this instance where there is a ICS ROM, but a GB kernel, it would actually provide for a much better user experience.

OK now I'm confused. I've been using the aokp builds for a while and they are the ics build 40 then the date. I've been flashing those for a long time but data is just as bad if not worse on some builds. Can someone explain why even though I have the ics leak, data is still screwed up? I was told data was much better on these builds.
