Hello, I am new to this forum, I have a HTC Incredible S from Optus Australia, it is currently s-off and has khamsakamal48s' MIUI rom installed. I have also been having bad reception, poor battery and wifi range issues ever since I got this phone, so i thought it is time to change the radio. Which radio would be appropriate for my phone and how will I install it?
Install the radio in my sig, i was with optus and has recently unlocked...

i'm using the one with 19_m at the end ( see signature) it is the latest and seems to be ok, that's with Amaysim ( who use the optus network)
it can be installed 2 ways,
1) put pmg file in your sdk tools folder of PC and push via command prompt
2) put pmg file in root folder of sd card and boot to H-boot and it will find file and install itself
Note: make sure MD5 checksum is correct or else you can brick your phone.
files can be found in the "radio " topic in the moderation section
cheers

Well, I successfully installed it but it seems like it did minor differenceand nothhing to wifi range (have to be around 1.5 metre radius from the modem to get full bars and every 0.5 metres away from the modem takes out 1 bar, so max range of like 3.5 metres away from router :/ if you know any fix for that it would be appreciated) Thanks for the help so far

You cant use any kernel on any rom, because some kernels are made for specific roms/android versions/User Interfaces..
For Instance, Kernel 3.x works on CM10 (Not Released Publicly Yet)
Beastmode Kernel works on roms like Blackout, ViperVIVO, and MIUI..
l0st.prophet's kernel (XS ICS or something like that) works on most ICS Roms..
For you i suggest Beastmode. It works for the latest MIUI rom in dev section
If you flash the wrong kernel, u will notice problems like wifi not working etc... Just a flash a compatible kernel over it and it should get fixed.
The Kernel link is in Blackout Thread on the 2nd post. Just download it and flash in recovery :good:

yep, i've even tried that aluminium foil modification
I have had trouble with reception too, I did all that i could think of,
clean the contacts,
tried a new back cover,
used every radio under the sun (slight exaggeration)
the foil mod... etc
Whatever I did nothing seemed to help it.
But then one day i thought of electrical wires and thought if I could strip a wire back and just get a few strands of copper, it should work.... and IT DID!
now i have full bars where before I had little or none.
Moral of the story: When in doubt, use copper.

I'm wondering what firmware everyone is running right now, as I'm looking to find one as a basis to rollback to as a full nandroid backup. Constantly redoing my UI is annoying me now, so I'm looking to find a baseline with which to experiment.
Currently, I'm running VibrantHybrid r2, and I'm looking for something more stable to run. Basically, I'm looking for a ROM where everything works.

I use JH3 and SRE and i have no problems i am a courier and never have gps problems at all yeah if there is alot of overcast then yeah it can take a cpl min to lock but i have no issues at all.
Im running jm7. out of all that i have tryed i like this one the best. I live in PA (BFE) hills, trees and lots of sharp curves. I toke a drive with gps and it worked great. All i did was root and lag fix from the market. love it

go there, first post has link for downloading jm7. then goto page 4 of the above link post 33 if you never flashed i9000 before. feel free to contact me via pm if you need anything else. good luck and i love jm7
thanks for that. i have flashed JM5 before but like i said, people complained that i sounded muffled when i talked to them on the phone.
with so many posts on here about flashing this and flashing that, its hard to find the right ones sometimes.
right now i am running JH3+SRE 123+ext4+black evo notification bar and circle batt lagfix
in my nandroid backups, i have:
hybrid R3+bugless mod
i9000+jh3+ext4
rooted jh7
soon to have a JM7
I haven't flashed a new ROM in awhile and really don't want to have to go through every ROM/modem combination to find one that works for my needs. I know plenty of folks here go through almost every ROM that is available so I'm hoping to pick your brains.
1) I'm NOT asking "what is the best ROM". I <3 -all- of the ROM authors and don't wish to start that kind of mess.
2) I'm willing to try a couple of combinations to see.
3) My Cappy is brand new (I just exchanged my old one under warranty since I was one of those in the original batch that got the lovely random shutdown issue even with 2.1-update1) ... not sure if that is going to matter or not but I've read a lot of posts that seem to make it clear that different Cappy batches behave better with different ROMs.
So ... what I'm primarily looking for:
* I'm on AT&T so I need 850
* I would REALLY like to get improved GPS performance ... I don't want to buy a standalone GPS (wife has one, I'll use it when I have to) ... right now even with the GPS tweaks like Skyhook I'm just not getting acceptable lock times and it loves to break lock.
* HSUPA ... I'd like to enable HSUPA. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area with a new 3G tower and small population, which means I know there is more bandwidth available so I might as well use it. Especially since on occasion I need to tether.
* I don't want to lose noise cancellation
* I would like a ROM with good battery performance
Otherwise I'm not concerned with new features ... besides the issues above I do fine with the 2.1 ROM (not saying I don't want 2.2, just saying I don't care whether the custom ROM includes custom launchers, themes, etc). I would -like- working Bluetooth + HSUPA but my version of "working Bluetooth" doesn't care about voice dialing.
PS. I've read a number of threads on ROMs and modems ... but my brain hit information overload once I started trying to match up both. I probably could have settled on a single ROM -or- modem, but trying to get them to mesh well just didn't compute.
Everyone has different experiences with different roms. I know it's a cliche but it's true. I've had pretty much no gps in a rom that boasts about gps. Best to try each rom and see if you like any.

Personally I love my combo of darky's 9.1 with suckerpunch oc/uv kernel and the tjl3 modem. I really haven't used the gps much and so I can't say about that (make sure to use faster fix to get the right region). The battery life is all day for me and I use stereo bluetooth headphones all day. I really like the look too. I don't know if it has noise canceling though. Hopefully this is helpful.
HSUPA requires an I9000 based ROM with a matching modem.
I'm using Serendipity 5.0 with a JK4 modem.

The only way to have noise cancellation is to stay with 2.1. From what I understand, att is the only one to have included the noise cancellation chip and since we do not yet have an official Att 2.2 source we can not take advantage of the chip.
Not sure on this one, but doesn't i9000 based roms have the bt static issue? And is the i9000 roms the only ones that let you have hsupa? Sorry a lot of information is on this site and I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Started with the included modem (??), flashed jk4 with CWM (didn't help), moved to Telus JL3. I like JL3 better right now.
Just know that you have to pay attention to what ROM you're using. If you're running a I9000 rom, you have to use a I9000 modem.

What improvements did you see with the suckerpunch kernel?

Hi I currently just bought a Samsung Tab from Bell and looking to mod it to the best most stable version which closely supports these functions
- Phone use of course (voice) without routing for warranty purposes
- Camera video conferencing (I use oovoo or is there a better app please suggest)
I read some of the developments and see that modem was an issue etc. I want the most stable so that most services work.
Please suggest if there is something better than Gingerbread. So far I seen the Overcome ROM is popular now.
Please link tutorial page as I do not want to Brick it. Thanks guys!
I just read the Bell modem list and it says no voice.
But I am hearing people being able to use 3G services with Bell bought tabs.
Does this mean all Bell Tabs are not able to get voice?
I just found out that if I want to use the SGT on the Bell network I can still flash other modem firmwares and be successful.
Anyone know which is the best?
it's a matter of preference. some mods keep only the most basic functions while others are for OC/UV geeks.. read around, especially in the development section. If you plan to mod your tab anyway, the best advice I can give you is to READ A LOT! And when you're done reading, READ AGAIN!

I just need a pick me up jump start on what I should start with.

First of all things ROute it first...
-then flash the Gingerbread with Overcome
-then flash the modem with the one that works for all GSM except TMobile.
Will this achieve
-voice calls with the phone APP?
-Bell HSPA 3G data?
-Video font facing camera for chat?
All the other ROMS I will read on for tweakability but for now I am looking to just achieve the above. Did I miss anything in between?

i would recomend your for maximum stability use the stock rom, and be happy, you'll find out soon or later then no rom is worth install it, there will always be issues to turn your hair white.

As long as you dont have protected boot loaders and dont flash roms that do - should be alrite to try the different roms + then flash different kernels over them if u want.
Also first make a roto backup of your stock setup.

I agree on the chilling part.
But, I disagree on the overcome gold release. Compared to the RC1 release with the stock kernel, I would have to say that the Gold release with the new overcome kernel is draining more battery. Lots of people have reported bugs and lags while on the latest Overcome release, with the new custom kernel, compared to the RC1 release.
So, for now, I would suggest that you try the Overcome RC1 ROM without the custom kernel. I'm certain that these problems will be fixed in the future releases of Overcome. But for now the RC1 release is more stable in general than the latest, IMHO.

I can make some suggestions as i'm using a bell galaxy tab.
Flashing any Gsm rom will give you the voice capability. Just make sure you flash a modem as well. I am using JPZ and have no problem with making voice calls.
I definitely would suggest using overcome's rom as that is what i am using. Be sure to follow the instructions to the letter!!!!
You can get the bell hspa 3g data easily on any rom. if you sub to a bell plan, i would suggest the tablet flex plan where you can share your data with your smartphone (presuming you have one).
I just installed the overcome gold and have tried using gtalk with video. It lags for me but it does work. I dont know with the other video talk programs like oovoo.
I was on overcome 1.47 and loved that rom. Fast, stable and easy to use.
This rom is a little laggy and i was surprised that i got 28 hours on the battery after flashing. Might be a little different today but it all depends on the usage too.
Good luck and hope you enjoy the tab. I sure do. Flashing just increases my enjoyment of the tab.

I will try and see how it is. Your sig shows what you are using should I try that one or the one suggested not the Gold One because you said it lags.

then I noticed people talking about modem..
what does this modem do and what is the best modem for miui rom?
thanks in advance
I am a super newbie as well.
But I think people change their modem because sometimes the phone signal (3G/2G or whatever) is just too lower than the usual.
It seems to be different phone to phone. But if your phone signal seems normal, you don't need to anything (I guess )

Modems are the software that establishs and controls your phone, data and gps signal. Some modems work better in certain regions or with certain carriers. Some may be best with gps, or shine at data transmission. Also if your phone supports the 850 band you will need a modem that supports that. Getting the best signal you can is important because the sgs can burn a lot of battery life seeking and finding a solid connection.
Modems are painless and quick to flash via recovery, so it never hurts to try a few out to find the best for you and your usage.

1.Yes, you need to S-OFF first using AlphaRevX and then you can root.
2.Its not up to its 8MP mark, the noise reduction is a lot in the camera, in other words, a 8MP picture on this phone is actually not a 8MP picture. My previous phone that had a 5MP sensor used to take far better pictures.
3.The battery life's great, if you use ARHD ROM it improves even further.
4.No, there is a wifi drop issue but that's with all gingerbread phones.

if your device comes with froyo, update it via OTA or more better is to make a gold card, download a RUU that supports AlphaRevX (WWE European) put it in it and flash via bootloader. Then you can use AlphaRevX to S-OFF.(You will find all such instructions in the android development category) Some new official ROM bases do not support AlphaRevX so it better to update via goldcard just to be safe.
Sense 3.0 ROM i.e Virtious Unity performs very good, doesn't lag at all, comes with a great kernel with OC on demand. I personally don't like sense and am on MIUI. You can give CM7 a try but the buttons won't rotate(not something of much concern, will probably be fixed in the next update) It would be stock vanilla android and you can customize it in any way you like plus it will perform very fast or you could try MIUI which is based on CM7. You could also try ARHD, its clean, fast and stable.

+1 for the amazing reply man . thnx a lot
So now i have made my mind that this phone is my next n first Android
I think its necessary that you should be knowing these 2 minor problems.
1.Back cover creeking, happens to only some people, can be fixed using a plastic tape or piece of paper placed inside. Its nothing to worry about.
2.If you view the rotatable buttons from one side, one will appear brighter than the others, the opposite if you view from the other side. Its probably because of the dual LCD button layers. Again not something of much concerns, if you see it straight, you wont notice. On my phone, I can partially see the landscape search button in portrait mode, it makes it look a bit weird.

Ok thnx i think im ok with these

Since you're in India, if you but this phone, you will have a Asian ROM so you would have to change to a european one in order to S-OFF. If you need any help later on, don't hesitate to ask.The guides are available in the development section that explain every step in detail.
