Sorry if this thread is mislabeled. I'm struggling to use Navigation on my i9305, the device spends a good 5 min hunting for satellites ("searching for GPS") before it eventually locks onto one. This happens both within the confines of a car and standing in wide open spots with clear lines of sight to the sky. Using GPS Test and GPS Status, I can see 6-7 satellites w/ healthy (green) connections but the Galaxy continues its relentless hunt. The result is excess battery usage (and heat), as well as very poor GPS performance that makes Navigation almost unusable. This occurs in areas where the wife's iphone 5 is able to start navigating (also using google maps) almost immediately.
Have tried to purge and redownload A-GPS info via the apps above, reboot etc but not noticing any improvement.
I've seen many threads about Androids + "searching for GPS" error messages. One suggests upgrading the radio (which I understand as being part of the baseband package?). I'm currently on I9305ZHALI2 (this is a retail HK device), is there anything newer? Whats the downside to using a non-HK kernel (if that's even possible).
Have you guys experienced this? How did you fix it?
Other possibly useful stats/info:
Kernel: 3.0.31-399890 [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Tues Oct 30
ROM: Pandoriam v4.0 XXELKC
Baseband: I9305ZHALI2
Are you in Hong Kong?
If not maybe flash a different Modem from the Modem thread over in development forum.
You could try faster fix from the market or as your using Pandoriam chat to Btemtd about gps fix.

I am using the phone in HK, hence I'm wondering if an out-of-region modem/baseband would cause problems (if I use one from a region that uses diff frequencies)
Possibly, I wouldn't be able to say to be honest.
Faster fix did the trick for me.
You can choose your pool to one nearer you.
Or look on the Ripper ROM thread, there is a flashable zip called gps fix. I was getting a really bad lock before flashing this and now my gps is great!

Hi..
Perhaps trying this gps.conf would do it:
http://db.tt/ViSFRPfb
Its from rix rom ver 3.0. Now my gps is flawless. Lock in 3-12 seconds.
Are you rooted? If you are go to System/etc and replace this file with the one in that folder. It uses a universal time server it seems.
Good luck

Download a GPS app. There are a few on the Market. Search for "GPS status".
The same thing happens to me, I dl GPS status and whenever you loose the signal go to GPS status ( PARK FIRST IF YOU'RE DRIVING BTW!!) -> Tools -> Manage a GPS --> Reset , then re-download GPS assistance data. Then go back to your GPS app and it should lock-on again.
It is a major pain in the ass, but it's one of those trade-offs for having Froyo on a phone that was not designed for it and giving Sprint the finger.
Thank you, downloading the app.

this may be unrelated but IF you are using one of deca's kernels try enabling cfs tweaks in the batt-cfg, that helps my gps lock way faster and much stronger.
Hello, Having GPS issues as well after I rooted. I am running 2.3.2 with Cyan mod 7 on Sprint HTC Hero. I get GPS signal for about 2-3 minutes then lose signal. I have tried Google Nav and Map Quest. I have installed GPS Status and GPS will connect when I do the steps above through GPS Status, then I lose signal after 2-3 minutes. To be honest I am new and do not know much about the kernel. It reads 2.6.29.6 aospGBmod. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
GPS can be touch and go with the CM7 builds but most of us can go at least a half hour or more with a lock and no issues. Your kernel is the stock kernel for aospCMod. There are several other kernels you can use, namely the 43 and 589 kernels by Deca in the development section. Download one of the kernels and after you flash the ROM and gapps, flash the alternate kernel and see if it helps with GPS.

I gave my GPS an extended workout yesterday. Only issue I had was a reboot after about an hour and a half, and I think that was because my phone was getting warm. No lock loss, it was accurate, no problems. I was on cm7#18 at the time and using nav.

Thanks Anthony. Flashed to 589 and it is a little better. Plus it was sunny here this afternoon so I am sure that helped a little.
No problem. We'll see if the new builds can finally put an end to the GPS problems.

i am using cog 4.1.1 and i am having problems with my data my sisters phone has a strong 3g signal and mu cap is only using egde.
i am new to flashing and all i want to flash a new modem
cog uses Baseband I897UCKB1, Kernel 2.6.32.9
waht is the fastest modem or raido whatever i can flash to using cw
i want to use hsupa or 3g what ever the fastest is battery life is not a problem
I9000 modems have faster data but if not paired with i9000 kernel bluetooth will likely not work correctly
CM7
You're looking for modems, and that is ENTIRELY dependent on where you are in the world.
Cog 4.1.1 would be using the official 2.2 ROM as a base, so I'm not sure if these modems would help out... As far as I know KB1 is the only working modem with that version of the ROM (I'm not 100% on this).
I would try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272 for the moment, but like I say I'm unsure how updated that topic would be (the latest few posts will definitely have something about KB1 there)... I'll can go through some quick research for you to make sure, but I'm at work right now so I can't at the moment :/
A quick scan through the latest posts seems to say that JK4 and JPG and KP1 modems seem to work best for some users. (Again, not a 100% sure thing).
Hope this helps at least a teeny bit.
I used secret code in sgs tools and enabled 3g and hsupa and It is working fast now something around 1857kbs down and 367kbs up. At 4 bars

Speeds as fast as Wi-Fi ? What kind of internet connection is that ? For me , my internet is 15:1 mbps (download:upload) . The speed on my phone is no where near the speeds on wi-fi .
EDIT: I'm getting 3:1 Mbps on my phone through data . I'm on CM7 , Escapist's Kernel with JL3 CM7 modem .
In order to get the "fastest modem" , you have to test out all the modems given to you for your kernel . Some modems are better in other areas , so you just have to test . For the Captivate kernel , the latest modem (if I'm not correct) is KB1 . Try it out and see if it makes things any better . I liked the i9000 kernel / modem combo better because of HSUPA enabled and the features it gives . I got speeds as high as 4:3 Mbps .

You may have an issue either with the flash or something else is conflicting because I am running the same thing and have zero issues always have a strong signal, actually have a signal in places i didn't when I had the stock software- don't think it is the modem they use jk4 as a default modem most roms use the same
I would suggest you go over to the serendipity Q&A section and post this info. so the developers can help you work out your issues- response is pretty good
If there was a definite answer to which modem was fastest don't you think that it would be the standard for all roms? Just like which rom is the best is highly individual

Haven't tested compass yet.
Progress with gps testing:
Tried several radios without wiping the cache first (no help with gps, wifi&data ok)
Now using nexus radio kb3, seems to work , have to test some more
KB3 (and KF1) also fixed the "always roaming" problem.
To get kb3 to function, had to (wipe cache +)flash kf1 first, reboot, (wipe cache+) flash kb3
At this point, the key for successful gps is to wipe cache prior flashing radio (modem)
Hi, tried your way also but no luck so far. Still think that the compass is of influence. Sometimes GPS works and then suddenly compass becomes unstable and is deviating and at the same time the GPS looses fix but still has satellites in view. I am getting desperate. will try some more.
Btw I am on titanium rom

Tried. Only with some luck.. GPS gets fix, keeps it for a while then loses fix and doesn't seem to get it back. Sigh.

Hi!
I had tried different modems but none of them worked so the only solution I found was to open up my SGS and then do some hardware fixes....had to bend the connection "wire" of GPS. Now the contact between GPS and antenna is good, so this means I get the satellite lock in few second, even indoors!
Just search Google or Youtube and you will find how to do it.
Cleared all GPS stuff with GPS aids (yes I payed 2€ for it but was getting desperate)
and now it has been working just great for about 4 days.
I also flashed another ROM prior to clearing, and it (gps) worked ok after the flash. I'm not sure which or both did the trick but now it's working..
I'm currently on slim ICS and my modem is JW4.

GPS AIDS is a great app to improve your signal.in settings u can NTP server, its usually set to world or north America.change to your region.this will improve your signal significantly.
So my fellow Australians. I don't know if like myself you experience the following anoying behaviour when loading pages on 3G/HSPDA. (using non-stock carrier provided rom AND modem)
Note: using a T branded rom seems to make no difference for me.
1. Big data Pages load a bit on H+
2. Pauses at some point. Sometimes for more than 5 seconds.
3. Network drops to 3G briefly then kicks back to H. Then finally H+ and the page loads quickly all in one go.
4. Annoyingly on the most data heavy pages in pauses AGAIN! just before it finishes loading.
I learnt a bit about TCP buffers and Kernel parameters that control them and came with this init.d script which, for me has MASSIVELY! improved the loading times on the browser by smoothing out the memory buffer.
Tested on Samsung JB leaks but should work on all Samsung roms... or not work but certainly not break anything.
http://db.tt/rLV1hT28
Hope it helps guys!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
So what exactly does this script change?
Will it work on Telstra? And what exactly does it do?
No harm in trying on Telstra. Just delete the init.d script if it's not good.
The script tweaks some TCP settings in /proc which change the memory buffers for HSPDA and other properties I found a good online tutorial and trial and error did the rest... have a look at the script!

Hey mate nice work. I have noticed when I flashed Omega v24 JB Rom or any JB Rom I loose my APN,s and when the phone first starts up after a fresh Flash, a pop up apears on my screen for about half a second and from what I glimpsed it said it couldn't get something from my Telstra network (Guess it is the APN,s it cant get). Is this because my Telstra GS3 is GT-I9300T and the JB Roms are cut from GT-I9300 that are not released in Aus yet? When I put my APN's in manualy I get my 3G/GSM internet back but Accu Weather cant find my location and FC's tried another Clock weather widget that I use all the Sense 4.0 style and it can't find my location (Auto or Manually no difference). So I flashed back to Omega v13.1 ICS and all is fine.Do you think your mod might help? PS. I also flashed Android Revolution HD 9.0.0 and flashed his Super Wipe script for a clean install thought it might help but no difference still no APN's.
Cheers - I will give it a go. Currently using Red Bull Mobile Australia which uses Vodafone.
I wonder if this has anything to do with Fast Dormancy as it really does sound like what it was invented for and happening due to your description, If so you might be able to turn it off with the FastDormancy Toggle for i9300 app on Play.
I've never noticed these connection problems on Optus but then again they don't support it but I think Voda/Telstra might since Telstra supports HD Voice while the others don't

use some troubleshooting tools to find whats happening, maybe some app runns wild for unknown reasons.
Check in development settings something with show cpu stuff, that can be handy for that. It shows cpu utilization etc. Any process nane there you can google.
if in doubt, go to settings, apps, running, turn some stoff there off, go to cached in same screen, repeat, go back and forth till you find the filthy process
at own risk off course.
its possible an app uses you data a lot and hoggs it, plenty of ways finding that out, like set everything to manual sync to eliminate.
check which apps use lots of data, etc.
Or root device, warranty now void, all own risk, get autostarts app and check those on connection triggered. Disable the buggers you wanna keep.
when culprit found, find developer thread or website and report the bug lol with proof its that app
Thanks for the info..will try these things out .
