For that we need custom recovery, like we had TWRP in GB. Developers are working on it, and soon we will have that. Meanwhile you can reflash whole firmware.
You can try to use zip file from Shaan's root. Just delete system/app, and system/bin, and put build.prop in system folder. But I am not sure if it will work this way.
I attached how I think it should work. If you got any more bootloops editing it, try it.

i cant,i dont have a pc,

Maybe you better wait for custom recovery. With it would be lot easyer. You will have backup to restore.
I just tried it, it is not working because of signature.

Reboot phone In recovery mode, connect usb, run adb shell In PC:
su
mount -o remount system /system
cat /sdcard/build.prop > /system/build.prop
reboot
(Assuming u have a backup build.prop In /sdcard)

I did not try, but I think you can. Just make it CWM compatibile. I have empty zip that is compatibile with TWRP, but I do not know if it is compatibile with CWM. I will try it later.

This CWM is buggy. When I press option install from SD - it refresh. I needed 3 times to push restart to get phone restarted. I am waiting for fully working CWM, and I will try then. I am not pushing my luck after problems with TWRP last time.

YES solid explorer works,
changed to S2,
RESOLVED

Use another .zip that extract things to system, if u replace files In the cwm zip it wont work because of the update-script inside

Man, you just saved my phone by this zip. Thank you

Hi, I know this is an old h thread but I'm pretty sure this will be handy to someone
Try this app for an easy way to make an update.zip It's still in beta but seems to be working fine on my N7100 so give it a go...
Zip.me can be found here (playstore)

[Q] help flashing rom captivate

im trying to flash paragon rc5. i follow the instructions, but when i go to choose sd card... and click on paragon.zip as file to use in clockwordmod recovery manager, it loads okay, then says replacing recovery manager and reboots. what did i do wrong?
To flash rom you should boot into recovery, select ingersoll zip from sd, choose zip, select parogon, confirm, done
Well when i do, it acts like its going to install, but then says "replacing recovery manager with clockwork..." then exits and reboots into the normal recovery screen.
Each time i get into recovery it is the normal one. I have to go to reinstall packages to get to the clockworkmod one. Something tells me thats not right.
Could this have happened because i installed rom manager and it didnt say i needed it?
Sounds like you are flashing an update.zip to get clock work recovery. i think you need to confirm you downloaded the correct file
What happened was i installed rom manager, got recovery manager through it, then downloaded paragon and its update.zip file. So am i basically flashing the recovery manager right now?
Sounds like it, are you on stock?
Paragon rom zip should be like 170mb in size
Rooted, but otherwise stock. Have already wiped all my data on it in preparation.
What im trying to do is this- have update.zip and paragon.zip in main internal sd folder. Go into recovery---reinstall---then it loads clockwork, then go to from sd---choose--- and if i pick paragon.zip it still does it.
let me clarify this, basically you do not need rom manager here.
1. download the update.zip and put it in your sdcard root folder;
2. download the rom file (170mb one) and put it in your sdcard; not necessary to be the root folder;
3. suppose you are on the stock rom; shut down your phone and use key combo to get into recovery mode;
4. apply the changes (i remember it is the second option), you may need to do it twice. you should now be in the cwm;
5. use the menu in the cwm to browse and install the rom file
6. reboot your phone. done.
Boot phone up normally. Delete paragon file you have. Redownload. Like I said the file should be like 170mb.
Update.zip goes in the root folder? Where is that? I couldnt find it anywhere....
The file is about 170mb. I know thats correct, im thinking since i had already installed cwm i moght have screwed up.
when you select reinstall packages you should go into green recovery/clockwork recovery.
If that works boot phone, open rom manager, select install rom from sd, select paragon
check the attached file.
Thats the update.zip i have. Now where do i put the damn thing?
Your internal sd card. Dl to phone, go to my files app, open dl folder find file select copy, click paste. Should now be where you need it

Did you put in into the folder system/framework with the phone turned on with some file explorer, right? Not with a flashable zip from recovery.
You just won a reflashing using LG software tools

Yes, but if you don't do it flashing from recovery, you get bootloop.
You can flash it now with flashable zip from recovery (did you have NOVA rom so you can boot directly into recovery?) connecting the sdcard to the computer and pasting a flashable zip for framework.
I tried to modify the framework-res.apk file and then i putted it in the right place but i've briked the phone.
My PC can't read the phone (NO LG software recovery), NO ADB (ex reboot recovery), No hard reset.. there's not a configuration to put it in hard reset.
i've sended it to LG Assistance.. i wish that they can format and recovery the phone.
Sorry for English!

LG Marquee has root!

I have a Marquee and have successfully rooted using http://androidnerds.net/2011/10/08/lg-esteem-oneclickroot-now-ready/. Apparently the LG Esteem is close enough for this to work. After install, you will need to manually update superuser via the market.
Thanks to Hoovhartid over at androidcentral forums for suggesting this.

install Rom Manager from the market
ROM manager doesn't give an option for my phone for CWM and you can't back up your ROM without it.
Sorry but not risking bricking this thing if I make the wrong choice.

+1.and you can use adb to pull all files and boot.img ,and we can test it in a safer way
Okay guys, I thought what the hell, I'll try the LGE Black option in ROM manager and see what happens.
IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Use the volume keys to move and the search button to select.
I have backed up the ROM from the Marquee and loaded on Mediafire.
The back up wasn't good, so i pulled the link. Sorry!
Hope this helps.
Sorry folks, I don't think the backup is any good. I tried another and it looks the same. It is too small and doesn't have musch data.
Can someone point me to, or step me through, how to pull all the files with adb. I'll be glad to pull and post.

am kinda noob too..so hope this will help!xD
first of all,you need a adb.exe
you can get it from super-one-click,or android sdk, google it
for example,we pull files at d:\system
copy adb files in d:\system
and then,open cmd(win+R,enter cmd)
connect your phone before we start.
type
Code:
d:
adb pull /system .\system
ok then it will pull all the system files into d:\system
does it back up to a directory on the SD card? if it does, you need all the files in the directory. there should be a few .img files along with the nandroid.md5 file. put them all in a zip and upload it.
look in sdcard: \clockworkmod\backup\
the directory the files are in should be named with a date+time stamp
Any chance?

I've already tried the CWM backup and it is no good, only about 18 meg in size and missing almost everything important.
That is why I was trying to get directions on how to use ADB to pull system files and image from the phone.

1. Download Android SDK http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
2. Install it on C: (not on Program Files for Easy Access)
3. Connect your phone through USB with debugging on
4. Open Command propt from your PC. (windows button + r / type "cmd" without quotes)
5. On command prompt type "cd c:\Android\ASDK\platform-tools" (without quotes then press Enter)
6. Then type "adb pull /system" (without quotes then press Enter)
7. wait till it's finished pulling the files
Now go to C:Android\ASDK\platform-tools. Copy all files now, zip it. Upload, they'll just exclude/disect the adb ones.
this is interesting. I'm going to try to use this method for rooting our P970.
Advices are welcome
Okay, I used ADB and was able to pull the system, boot.img and recovery.img.
Not sure if any of these are correct. The system file is HUGE (434mb zipped) but looks like every thing is there. Both boot and recovery are 5.00mb each.
If this looks right and is what you are after I will upload it to mediafire.

need (my files) app on captivate

does anyone know if there is a .tar file or something so i could flash the my files app on my cappy that usually comes on the cappy with the official firmwares? i just need some kind of file to do that because i dont like astro and es file manager, etc. even a link to somewere where this has been done before would help, thanks.
Why use that when the others have a **** ton more functionality? Like root file exploration.
Do you have any .tar stock firmware package? Open that archive with 7zip and go to /system/app and drag it out...then use a root file explorer (lolz oh the irony) to drop it in /system/app
Or use adb to push it there
Or get a theme cwm zip package and delete all the files out of the folders (not touching the meta-inf folder) and drop it in /system/app and flash that.

I did indeed LOL
hmm...i think im gonna get the cwm package and just do that, do you have any link on one of those, if not then how can i get or look one of those up?
any theme zip will do, just not a ROM zip that has a kernel and modem in it you don't need top flash the theme zips ate just system apk files you can delete out and add your apk in. Make sure only that apk is in it though.
Hold on...I'll hey you a link where i posted a test zip you can use.
Edit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22271929&postcount=1403
In that post is a cwm zip, open that archive with 7zip go to /system/app delete what's there and drop that apk in. Then flash that in recovery.
ya well it didnt work..
Ya well you give more detail we can help.... "It didn't work" isn't very helpful for trouble shooting...
it said that the installation was aborted
What version of cwm do you have?
Or are you on an aosp ROM?
Just use a root explorer, go in and unzip any file that has it in it, then go to the extracted folder, long press on it and hit COPY, then back out until your at SYSTEM and paste it, then look for the file in SYSTEM and long press on it and choose permissions, then change it so it matches the SAME PERMISSIONS in SYSTEM/APP, then once you have the permissions correct long press on it and move it into SYSTEM/APP and hit PASTE. them REBOOT the phone and it will be in there and working. NO NEED to try flashing it in cwm. This MAY sound like a lot of work but it is VERY EASY AND FOOL PROOF.

It failed because you need to mount that partition r/w instead of the default r/o...should be an option for that on the root file explorer you used.

As studacris said make sure to set it to read/write. When using ROOT EXPLORER you will see a button towards the top the probably says MOUNT R/W click on it and then paste it to SYSTEM( the reason I say to paste it to SYSTEM first so you can change the apparently permissions before moving it into SYSTEM/APP since it will ask to overwrite a version of itself if it is already there. To change the permissions just long press, choose permissions, then click the appropriate boxes to make it have the correct permissions before placing it in.

Pasting to /system and Changing permissions shouldn't be needed.
And if it is..boot into recovery, go to advanced, and fix permissions

Help with .backup file.

My neighbor's phone was locked out by AVG and I dont want to reset it because of important notes and messages. I cant connect ADB since he hadn't enabled Debugging. I went to stock 3e recovery and took backup fro there and got .backup file in internal storage. I want to edit this file and remove the AVG and restore it back. How do I do so?

No, CWM recovery is just to flash the update.zip with the modded build.prop.
If you have stock rom installed, download stock rom and unpack system.img to get the build.prop file.
CWM can be flashed with SP Tools
