[Q] Question about Flashing ICS

I want to Flash Team ICSSGS [Android 4.0.3] (Link to ROM Thread) but I am not for sure what Bootloaders or Kernel I need to use.
I currently have:
Firmware Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: I897UCKB1
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build Number: FROYO.UCKB1

In general, the Gingerbread bootloaders are preferred with any of the ICS ROMs, because they are more ubiquitous and can be used with virtually any version 2.1 thru 4.0. Kernel-wise, the ICS ROMs come with a kernel, and your only other option is Glitch v14 beta right now...but mostly, you shouldn't need to worry about flashing anything beyond what's in the ROM itself right now.

So that ROM I listed in my OP comes with its own Kernel?
And is there a particular Bootloader I should use?
If there is, may you please link me to it?

Hey im currently running the ROM you are asking about. To answer your questions you have to be on the gingerbread bootloaders. You can flash those using odin, or since there is an official update out, use Kies mini to update your phone to gingerbread and that will flash the bootloaders for you.
About the kernel, the ROM you posted includes a kernel in the .zip and when you install the .zip it will flash the kernel for you. Its a fine kernel and works great so dont worry about changing it unless you have problems.
Here is the link on how to flash the bootloaders using Odin. Its not a hard process and pretty safe so let us know how you come out on the other side!

Now when I flash this bootloader you listed, will Froyo still boot or will I have to flash my ROM afterwards?

froyo will still boot. GB BL are backwards compatible and the ISCSGS script should allow it to flash over any ROM

so i have gingerbread 2.3.5, installed CornKernel_UCKK4_v603 and custom rom SimplyStock KK4 V1.0 , so if i wanted to switch Team ICSSGS [Android 4.0.3] should i do following?
1. wipe data /factory reset
2.wipe system
3.flash from recovery mode Android 4.0.3 zip?
I already have a backup made with Efs Pro as a tar file
anything else i need to do?

Yes, Froyo will still boot. If this were a layer cake it would go something like bootloader, kernel, rom. So basically, your bootloader has nothing to do with your kernel or your rom but it is at the bottom layer of the boot process. It does effect which ROMs you can use though as gingerbread and ICS roms require GB bootloaders. So flash the bootloaders, you will still be on Froyo. Update to GB. Root GB. Place the ROM on your internal SD and then flash it. If you run into any problems check the common problems page found on the first page of the SGSICS ROM.

First, if you want to keep any of your apps or contacts backup those as well using Titanium Backup. Make sure to backup to the External SD card or make a copy of the backup somewhere other than the phones internal SD.
Second, you dont have to wipe data/factory reset before you flash. This is only if you have the problem of a bootloop when you try to install. I had this problem and when I did the wipe data afterward it fixed it immediately. So follow this:
1: Boot into CWM
2: install rom
IF you have an issue with a boot loop at this point
1: Get back into CWM using the button combination
2: Wipe data/Factory Rest and Wipe Cach

I think this was true when flashing older roms. When I flashed that ROM I did not format system and it worked fine. Let me know if you have any problems when you flash.

i see. okey, thanx a lot again. will be able to flash in about an hour and will let you know

after flashing all went good and phone booted with no problem, except that i don't have a wi-fi, it is connected after typing my password in, wifi icon is on home screen, but could not enter any website or connect to my google account. any ideas?

so after flashing that file my phone gives me screen like this
Power Reset or Uknown Upload Mode
and it is stucked. so may i pull the battery off and go to recovery mode again and go back to my previous room? should i perform system format in this case?

Try to reboot. If it won't reboot then ask around in the icssgs Q and A thread.

with keys+power button combination i've been able to exit that screen and reinstalled 4.0.3
do you know safe way how do i go back to SimplyStock KK4 V1.0? should i first flash CornKernel_UCKK4_v603 with odin? but is it safe to do over android 4.0.3?

ok, in the end managed to boot the phone with working wifi but still would like to know how to flash back to SimplyStock KK4 V1.0, just in case ;-) if that won't be problem for you. thank you !!!

IMHO the best way to go from gingerbread to ics 4.0 is to
- in the development section download stock kk4 without bootloaders, unless you dont have them http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843
- then download a kernel of your choice probably cornkernal and put it on your internal sd card
- download ICS latest build and gapps and put them on your internal sd
- oneclick odin the stock kk4, let it boot up completely
- power off and install kernal via odin without aut reset
- boot into recovery, factory/data reset, clean cache, clear dalvik, install latest ics, then install gapps right after,
- reboot system and youre done.
IF you want to go back to your other rom the simplest way is to just kk4 fresh install, install kernal via odin, then isntall your rom.
I always keep all my contacts synced with gmail, and titanium backup any game data or app data i need, and reinstall apps through the market.

I gone ahead and flashed ICS onto my phone. It is working good but the Hang up button does not work. In order to hang up, i have to lock it and unlock it.
Now i did a Backup of Froyo from within CWM. if I do have a problem, can i go to DWM and restore the backed up Froyo?

Hey everyone, my phone is running 2.3.5 of Android and it is branded to Orange. My build number (and kernel version) is BVJVC. I cannot find the right cf root for me. There doesnt seem to be any for JVC. Can anyone help?

Are you planning on rooting to then flash a custom rom or do you just need root access?
If you are planning on changing roms then just flash a pre rooted firmware or one that has a root solution available.

What do you want cf-root for? If you want root to you can flash a custom ROM it doesn't really matter which one you use. If you want it to run you current stock ROM with root then it is better to run the correct one. I cannot find that one either. Good luck.

There's no cf-root for JVC. I've only found a french forum with a very tricky way to root... far easier to flash another ROM that has cf-root. But come on, let's have a little more fun... ICS!

I want to change rom. Can I just flash any rom compatible with galaxy s i9000 or do you have to have compatible kernels? I have seen tutorials where it says to flash to something specific before flashing to the final one. If it's possible can someone send me a link to a custom pre-rooted rom which I can flash straight away onto my phone?

most of the roms come with a kernel. You can then flash other kernels but these do need to be comparable. I have team oceans 4.2 for example. This comes with its own kernel but I have installed semaphore 0.9.1 which sheet a lot of testing has been the best fit for my use. Hope that makes sense. This is a stock firmware and the Odin 512.pit that I use when going back to stock and root is easily applied. It is a good idea to save these on your computer if (or when) things go wrong .

Can I just flash a rom with its custom kernel over my orange stock rom and it's kernel? They don't have to be similar in any way? Also, so I don't need root access to flash a custom rom.

You will need root access to flash custom roms as most have to be flashed by cwm(which you will get when you root your phone)

This brings me back to my original problem, people told me to flash a rom with compatible CF-root, but to flash i need to root? So i am stuck in a little circle?

You flash Cf-root with Odin. This gives you root. You then flash custom ROM through recovery on your phone. As mentioned above if you want root to flash custom ROM then you need root it does not really matter which cf-root you use. Just follow instructions in Cf-root thread then follow instructions from ROM thread you want to flash.
If you want to use stock ROM with cf-root then it needs to be compatible.

Help! I don't know which file to pick! The filenames confuse me!
First thing: don't panic! It's all rather easy, and you won't easily do something bad! I am personally attentive to use the exact same version as the ROM I am running, but it's not that important.
First, go to Settings -> About phone -> Build number. It should say something like FROYO.xxJPy. It's primarily the JPy that we are interested in. Try to match that with a download link available in this (and the next few) posts. Some of the downloads dont just have JPy file name format, but are called xx_xxx_JPy.
Find the one that is closest to yours, if yours is not present, and flash that one.
If you are just installing CF-Root to flash a custom ROM like Darky, make sure you have ROM Manager already installed, ClockworkMod flashed, then simply install the latest CF-Root, reboot once normally, then reboot in recovery and run the Darky update.zip. In this case it does NOT need to be a near match at all!
Before you start it is a good idea to download your stock rom or another one for your phone from here. http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&t=1&o=1&m=GT-I9000&r=-1#modelsa Then where it says region click your country.
I recommend getting everything you need before you start. So make sure you Odin, a 512 pit file & your stock rom with the PDA, Phone & CSC files. There are plenty instructions for getting back to stock if you search.
Next get the ROM you want & the kernel you want.
Now that you have everything you are ready to go.
My process is as follows.
1. Remove SD Card, some say to remove sim but I have never done this.
2. Turn on phone & turn on USB debugging.
3. Connect phone to usb & copy everything on my internal sd card onto my pc. (I have a samsung folder & create a folder with the date and put everything in there - just in case)
4. (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
5. shut down phone.
6. Follow cf-root thread instructions.
7. Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
8. Start ODIN
9. Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
10. Put your phone in download mode (power on, volume down, home button)
11. (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
12. Make sure repartition is NOT checked
13. Click the START button
14. Wait for the phone to reboot
15. Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)
Now you have root & cf-root. Restart phone. Next step is generally as follows.
1. Start phone.
2. Connect phone to pc.
3. copy files you wish to flash onto root of internal sd card. in my case team icssgs 4.2 & semaphore 0.9.1
4. (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
5. restart phone into recovery.
NB. Make sure to do a backup at this point and ensure you have a copy of your efs folder somewhere!!! - if for some reason your IMEI number is corrupted you will need this
6. factory reset & clear cache
7. advanced button -> clear dalvik cache.
8. back & choose install zip from sd card
9. choose zip from sd card.
10 .select the zip file (in my case team icssgs 4.2)
11. Choose yes- install... zip name
12. repeat steps 8-11 and select semaphore kernel.
13. factory reset & clear cache
14. advanced button -> clear dalvik cache.
15. reboot phone. Reboot can sometime take a while. sometimes you may need to do this twice.

If no luck then reinstall stock rom using odin making sure to use all three files & pit file with repartition checked.

Ok, let's clear things up a little. Every rom has its own kernel, let's say the default kernel of that ROM. There are stock Roms, which are those official of Samsung. Those come with its own kernel, but not rooted.
Now: there are some stock roms, of which some guys have managed to modify its kernel just to be able to have root access, and to have a modified version of the recovery: ClockWorkMod recovery.
There are other kernels, though. Kernels that people develope to improve those default kernels that come with stock kernels. But improve performance comes with (perhaps) less stability (actually that's not completely true, as cooked kernels also improve stability, and are in general far better than stock ones). What is true is that not every cooked kernel works with every rom, you have to make sure it works with what you want.
You definitely don't need to have root access to flash, but you do in order to make those highly important security backups! You can have root without flashing kernel.
Now, what are those roms that flash over other roms...? Generally cooked roms are stock roms modified to improve them. But they still use a lot of the stock roms system, that's why cooked roms have to be flash only over that rom they are based on. You still don't need to be root to flash those roms, but generally you do need ClockWorkMod recovery, that's why you need to flash cf-root kernel prior flashing a cooked rom. Or perhaps the cooked rom do not come with a modified/rooted kernel and you still needs to change the kernel (but usually they already come with a rooted kernel)

Help flashed stock ICS rom over cm9 using Odin. Stuck at Glowing Samsung Logo

Hey all,
Quite confused here, taking the advice from the older threads I flashed using odin the stock firmware which I got from samfirmware and followed the instructions. Everything installed correctly however the phone will not boot :S
I ticked only PDA in which I entered the md5 file.
Came from cm9 nightly and flashed United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse) 2012 July 4.0.4 N7000XXLRK N7000CPWLP5
Any help is appreciated and needed urgently - Thank you.

did you make a nandroid?
if you could get into recovery, (and you still have CWM) it would imply that you did not successfully flash the tw-based kernel.
no tw-based kernel means that a TW-based rom will not boot (unless you had hydracore)
buut... if you do have the stock ICS kernel on there, and try to flash anything, you could brick.
so best bet is to flash GB via odin, then flash CWM, SU, and then flash a custom ROM with a safe kernel in it.
pretty dangerous to even use stock ICS rom

when u say phone will not boot? is it blank or stuck on GT N7000 logo or the Samsung glowing logo?

Its stuck on glowing Samsung logo, I'm in download mode now - what is the best option for me? Might just flash GB rom

How can I go into recovery to check that? I only know how to get into download mode.

getting into recovery is the opposite of getting into download mode. use power button/ volume up/ home instead of power button/volume down/home
but IMO safest thing to do at all is to just get yourself onto a safe kernel before doing anything else.
flash yourself a stock pre-rooted GB ROM via odin.

Doing this now, hope it works - using the GB rom from when I first rooted (from GB) so hopefully should work

its just a matter of doing a wipe cache and wipe dalvik and data wipe. but as u on ics u can't. unless u install a safe kernel. If you installing gb, then after that reboot into recovery
vol up + pwr + home and then do a data factory reset, wipe cache and all should be good

it's possible, but quite unlikely, that you have already hardbricked your phone between flashing stock ICS via odin and the boot.
more likely than not you are fine.
next time remember to make a nandroid. and never flash stock ICS kernels (or especially flash anything while already on a stock ICS kernel). these are the top 2 rules of having an n7000. if you follow them in teh future you will never have any problems

FWIW there were reports of hard bricks using the new stock JB kernel too, as Samsung decided to patch the bug 'their own way', which didn't seem to work. so only thing which is 100% safe is when mmc_cap_erase is disabled

Ah Relief - Finally got the phone booted into GB rom. How can I now install the Stock unrooted ICS room? Can't I just upgrade using OTA? I'm selling the note on ebay so need it to be fresh ICS.

as the phone is in the boot loop its clear indication that it's a data corruption problem and not a brick at all. Just need that wipes after ics install on a safe kernel

Thanks for this, you're right it wasn't a brick - I'm now on a safe GB rom but really want this note to be in a stock unrooted ICS rom for the person buying it off me.

Connect to kies and update. If not use the same ics rom and flash it using odin. This time phone will start.
Before that while on gb do a factory reset.. connect to pc and format internal storage for you to get rid of all data

if you are selling it, then I guess bone stock (without even safe kernel) is the way to go
just bear in mind with my method it is possible to get onto stock unrooted ICS but with a kernel without the bug.
I am not 100% certain if the phone will update OTA with that kernel though, so I guess use the other method

however, there have been folks with hard bricks who have had /system and /data partitions screwed up who have even booted all the way into the OS. yes HARD brick. implying that there are actual corrupted partitions.
updating to stock ICS rom will put the affected kernel right back on his phone.
flashing another kernel from the affected kernel brings chance of a hard brick. (yes even though hypothetically you are only flashing /boot. but would you really take that chance with /boot? there have been reports of other partitions besides /data and /system being messed up, FYI)
it makes much more sense to flash the ROM via mobile odin, which gives you the option to flash a safe kernel at the same time.
this way OP is never on an unsafe kernel.
just because very few people bricked from flashing a safe kernel off off stock ICS doesn't mean that it isn't possible.

So if I use the OTA install method, there is a risk of bricking my device? I really don't think the person buying my phone will fiddle around with roms and kernels - so what do you reckon I should do? Does mobile Odin download a safe kernel for me?

Hmmm this current GB rom is rooted though so you reckon its better to unroot it and just sell as GB? I didn't specify GB or ICS

Flash stock GB over odin.
if you wanted to be nice to the user, you could flash a ROM with a CSC corresponding to whatever region they are located in. That way you can factory reset and it will show up in the language they are used to.
If he is on stock, it will automatically go look for updates and tell him he could update

[Q] General Questions with my N7000! Please Help!

Hello all... After reading here and there and in other forums, I have a series of questions that I would really appreciate if anyone can answer based on facts...
I currently have a Galaxy Note N7000 with this settings:

I want to install the 4.1.2 leaked version (already downloaded it) BUT I have some questions:
1.- I have read in different sites that I just need to do it with ODIN, no wipe required; and in other sites I have read that after installing, a wipe is required. Which one is it?
2.- According to many sites, by wiping I am at risk of hard bricking my note because of the death bug found in ics kernels. Should I still wipe?
3.- If after testing 4.1.2 I decide to roll back to I.C.S.... Again I should do that via Odin... but again I should wipe right? At risk again of bricking?
4.- This leaked version DOES NOT accept the s-pen functions at all right? so basically my spen would just be useless...
5.- THe recovery that is installed in the phone is the basic recovery that came with the phone, I havent changed it... I have read that installing some recovery files is dangerous. Which recovery is recommended?
6.- My note is NOT rooted... Does this affect my possibility of updating with this leaked firmware?
7.- and final... Do you guys recommend that I update or should I wait for the official firmware?

1. you can install that without wipes using PC odin. but its a matter of luck. if it gets stuck in a boot look then you will need to do a factory reset and for that to be safe you need to install a safe kernel Philz XXLSA (i guess thats what you downloaded)

3. You may have to wipe this time for a proper boot as it might enter a boot loop. Same procedure, install Philz and do a factory reset. Its better to do a nandroid backup of ICS rom if you wish to return back to ICS. this way all your settings apps and customizations will be restored.
4. Incorrect. Spen is fully functional on JB leaks TW based.
5. Philz works perfectly with JB TW roms. Recovery is not dangerous. Its what you perform on it without proper reading is dangerous
6. No, PC odin can successfully flash a JB TW rom on to a non rooted Phone. But if it enters a boot loop install Philz kernel to do a reset from recovery
7. Its a long wait and no one knows when its gonna come. so if me, i would do it and i have been on all the JB TW roms available till now.
I would say, do it, do it the right way and you will enjoy the phone.
You can root your current ICS phone using the Philz kernel PhilZ-cwm6-XXLPY-XEN-v2.7 and then do a backup from recovery to be able to revert back with no problems.

Your current ROM is XXLPY right ?, which kernel did you install ? If you installed an ICS kernel , your phone should boot anyway, but if you installed a JB kernel then it wont

OK. Main thing first. Now that you have backed up your rom, and the backup contains a JB kernel and ICS rom, so in future if you choose to restore the backup, dont be surprised if the phone does not boot. Later change the kernel to ICS
Which kernel did you install, update to your version of the kernel.
If the phone is fine, dont do a wipe. You can do it when you face some issues like Force close of apps or something not working as it should

[Q] JB to GB downgrade failure?

So, this is what happened. I first upgraded to the latest official JB 4.1.2 XXLSA firmware. I noticed that it still wasn't as fast as I'd like, and wanted to try a custom ROM instead. I read through the guides in here and get that I have to downgrade to a GB ROM first in order for me not to hardbrick my phone. So, I download "N7000XBKK4 ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000OXXKK5--------------------- Nordic countries" from that list over stock ROM's in the Q&A root guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 . I follow the flashing guide to the letter, puts my phone in download mode, runs the flash via Odin, the phone restarts, and everything goes south. Basically this happens: When I start my phone it get's to the point in the GB initial startup where I'm to touch the Android to start, but then all it does is throw messages at me about this service and that service having stopped responding, untill the phone reboots. So now I have reflashed back to the JB ROM.
So basically, what am I doing wrong, and what can I do to make a proper downgrade so I can get rooted, install CWM and get down and get it on with some custom ROM's?

Same happened with me. I flashed GB and was getting force close messages. But not a big problem. Just flash GB rom again. And after flashing just delete all user data from recovery and reboot. U wont get those messages any more.

You always need to WIPE data / factory reset after downgrading from JB .. GB is safe to go ahead.. if you choose ICS then first flash a safe kernel and then do wipe

It seems to me that KK5 is non wipe, which explains why you got those messages. The rest is detailed in nokiamodeln91's message BTW, JB is still not official for our Notes. What you installed was a leak with a safe kernel (if it was Philz).

I had this issue too when downgrading to GB. Wipe Cache and Dalvik and you should be ok from then on.

Or do I have to do the flash to GB, enter recovery, wipe cache partition and do wipe/factory reset, then reboot into a now working phone, set up for root with USB and so forth, root and install CWM, copy the custom ROM to my SD-card (gonna go for ParanoidAndroid) as well as Google services if I want those, and then install them via CWM/Mobile Odin?

GB LC1 is wipe. But if you want PA (which is an excellent choice) just flash a CM10 kernel in your recovery (if your recovery is safe, like GB for example). Then follow Utacka's instructions for the installation.

But if I want CWM I should do root and install CWM there? And then flash the custom ROM from CWM?

The CM10 kernel comes with its own recovery where you can flash from. If you have root issues, just flash CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip. In any case don't flash from stock ICS with CMW.zip: if you are on ICS and not rooted flash the relevant Philz kernel (which is safe and will give you root and CWM) then the CM10 kernel.
Edit: what ROM do you have now?

I use the 4.1.2 XXLSA ROM
Btw, anyone knows where I can download the Google Services Framework so I can install it alongside Paranoid Android? I have been led to believe it's not included as per default
