Hi i have a Galaxy mini apparently(sorry thought it was a GT-S5570) and new to the title of mini after a quite a bit of googling. Anyway i worked out how to get the 'root check ' app after reading about it and it sent a file to my gmail address but don't know where to move from here to unlock. I read so many pages my head is in a spin so would appreciate some help :0)
welcome to xda
1. 1st check if u r on froyo or GB..if not, upgrade to GB [see this general section for guide to upgrade to GB]
2. then install clockworkmod recovery [see original android development section]
3. then install any custom ROM available here...
custom roms are pre-rooted..
for all the guides = check this thread here #Season 1

OK I haven't heard of most of those things but i am guessing GB is Gingerbread as i have seen that around when googling. Is that the version of operating system? Ah i looked at the general section. The first sticky that had a guides section but wasn't sure which thing you meant sorry. Be kind to me as i am really new to Samsungs and have only modded a couple of motorolas in the last few years with lots of help from forums:angel:
before doing anything read the stickied warning thread it contains what you should never do with mini
then read the stickied reference thread
Thanks for the welcome A_U
OK will try and find the stickies and read them but it is hard as i have CFS. Reading through lots of stuff will take me ages

just dont go directly to flashing rom
you should first understand every things

I am on a disability pension as i have CFS/ME and short term memory is just one of the things i deal with. The condition is neurological. I shouldnt even be learning anything about computers at all and on top i am even a linux person. I do pretty well compared to others that have this but takes me a lot of effort to learn. Thanks....yeah i can't ....the guides are too many pages. If i can be given a link to get straight to it rather than pages and pages. I have to keep two browser pages open and its just not that easy. Sorry but not everyone is in the same position. I could do five things at once before this happened to me, was in a coma, had to learn how to walk/talk etc again....fighting my way back and might take 20 years...who knows. Anyway links straight to where and what. I am really good at following instructions as have been a linux person a few years now and get on the linux forums a lot...sorry i know its a lot to grapple when you might have not met someone with a neurological thing before. Sorry if i repeat myself and miss stuff out but thats all part of this 'bits missing' brain

FORGIVE ME, for i am a total NOOB. I just got my g1 in the other day, and i am completely excited about it. I saw my friends phone and he was telling me i should root my phone, and told me all the benefits of it. The only thing is he didnt show me how to do it! instead told me to come here, the g1 shrine and all of its lovers. Now i just want some basic info anyone can give me, like:
1. what happens when i wipe my phone?
2. what exactly are roms? and why are there so many of them! (as im surfing through the threads)
3. what exactly is SPL?
4. and any other information you think is critical for my knowledge about the g1
Again i appreciate any help i can get from you guys, i know this community is a nice and friendly one so im glad to be here! thanks again guyss
1) when you wipe your phone it removes all personal data, e.g. google sign ins, apps, settings, messeges, etc. you WONT lose your contacts.
2) a ROM is a firmware build, which is what the phone runs on. There are quite a few of them because some are designed for looks over performance wheras some are for performance over looks.

lol DP you are on a reported roll here tonight.
google and search is so easy use... i just don't get some (or most) people.
A little advice... before you start all of this, make sure it doesn't take control of you. Before you know it you'll have alerts waking you up at night telling you someone's new rom just was posted. It will take you over if you let it. lol
Moderation is key.
isn't this a repost anyway?
lol and you bought a Google phone with Google Search built in....
1. It wipes all data on your phone (apps and data, not your firmware)
2. ROM stands for Read Only Memory. Take it as your G1's operating system, like Vista or XP on a computer
3. SPL is pretty much the interface you will be using when flashing an image or using fastboot commands. Be careful when you flash an SPL though, it can potentially brick your phone
4. Just watch out when you flash the SPL, and remember to use Nandroid backups. Installing firmware and applications alone will NEVER brick your phone. Flashing your SPL incorrectly with a corrupted download can, remember to check the MD5 checksums.

I know the feeling of total noobness, let me tell you.. Especially if you coming here and reading all the threads for the first because it can be pretty overwhelming. Hopefully I can pass some of my knowledge on to you to kind of, ease your fears.
.:: Answers ::.
1.)If you wipe your phone, your restoring it to factory settings.
2.)ROMS are different versions of the OS that friendly developers such as Haykuro, JesusFreke and Cyanogen put together, to provide different functionalities or the same functionalities just more reliably or in a different way. (The only way you can use a different ROM is by having root access to your phone.)
3.)Secondary Program Loader, typically, a second stage bootloader. Not a term actually used by Qualcomm for msm7k has a more complex boot path involving both CPUs. Initial/secondary program loader is usually in reference to nand/onenand boot setups where you have a very small initial bootloader (1k to 16k typical), that is just enough to load a much larger secondary bootloader. Often there is something that runs first, in-rom, on-die (this is true of omap and msm chips for example) that is responsible for getting the IPL loaded.
4.)I would browse the Android FAQ to find other pieces to the much growing puzzle. I would definitely root your phone though (instructions here), and once your ready, setup your apps2sd (instructions here). If you want, I can help you do your apps2sd too, just hit me up on Gtalk if you want. As for ROMS, if you need help choosing, you can (go here) or if you want a suggestion, i would use Cyanogen's v3.4 ROM because it's an way modified version of JF'sv1.51 but allows you to use the Ext3 format for your apps2sd (which is good).
Hopefully this sheds more light for you, hit me up if you have any other questions.
If I Wipe before flashing a new ROM, will this erase my user data like phone nums and programs settings??
Why does everything keep looking the same after I flashed TTG 1.6 with out wiping original?
Will flashing again after wiping make it bring up the themes by default??
Will the new Kernel enable BT and Camera on the ROMs that currently these do not work on once we flash over??
Thanks for the help
Wow.

Seriously Search and read that is how you learn. Are you that lazy
1. Yes
2. TTG 1.6 is not a 1.6 rom it is still a 1.5 rom so it will not look diff
3. NO and i am a little confused at to what you mean

Dude, I spent 5 hours of my life(and will spend most of the next 2 weeks) reading the guides and the threads. 50+ pages threads to finely feel conftable on flashing my hero. U have to agree search is mediocre at best. Search for "nba" or "league pass" and u will get 0 results. Accidentally searching for something else I found 2 threads talking about nba league pass but the search still returned 0 results on nba or league pass. Now back to the subject:
Now that I have succesfully rooted my hero and installed custom rom, can u guys leed on what should I be searching for on the forum to enjoy to fullest the awesomeness of rooting?
ps. I love this forum and want to support it. After I'm done with my adventure I will create a thread with a "rooting for dummies" kinda thing to make life easier for new comers. Will include term definitions, links to guides and threads with customizations and links to donate to the devs.
I wasn't going to say anything about searching...but he does bring up a point. I spend far more time than I should have in searching how to compile Compcache with the CDMA Hero kernel source.
For you guys who are new to the ROM scene, Compcache is a kernel module that will take a portion of your main memory and use it as a compressed swap space, thus allowing you to run more programs at the cost of reduced main memory. It's perfect for people who don't run a swap partition on their SD card (which I do).
Now, I did what everyone on these forums complain about when someone who is new to the scene asks one of those questions that have been asked a few times...I searched these forums. My result: I found several posts on what Compcache is, a few on the internal mechanisms on how it works, and one posts that was related to GSM that was difficult to follow.
Searching more through Google, I found even more posts about what Compcache is and how to set it up (if you are using 2.6.29 kernel), but nothing about anyone compiling this.
Now, I know someone compiled it (it's in the Modaco kernel and the Gumbo kernel), but nobody's sharing information.
So, before we all go bounce on a new forum user like a cheetah on a three-legged antelope, perhaps you guys should search the forums for the answers and see how some of these questions the new forum users are asking are, in reality, not easy to find.
And for the new people out there...on page 1 of the this sub-forum, on the first and second entries, you will find a page pointing to a wiki entry (one each) that will tell you the available ROMs out there (and how to download them) and how to root your phone. So, before asking about how to root the phone or where can you get a ROM, check there. Or click on "The Darktremor" in my signature line. I have guides that will do the same thing (except rooting...I actually point back here for that since I actually thought the root guides were better than what I could write). However, if anyone wants me to build a rooting document (complete with pictures), let me know.
So, there's my opinion about it. I'm not going to say anymore on the topic.

I woke up one day and decided to root my G1. Did all of like an hour maybe 2 reading how to. Everthing after that is self explanatory imo.
With that said, its like 10 times simpler with the Hero. You can even use flipz auto root which requires virtually no effort. For those wanting to learn to root themselves, I pretty much wrote the "rooting for dummies" guide which is easily found via sticky wicki.
For all other inquiries, I have started a General/Hero Q&A thread. As a new comer, additions to this thread are highly valuable.
I have to say that Theresthatguy's thread on rooting is by far the best explanation of how to gain root without using the Pre-Kitchen (that is THE simplest way) and it helps you get familiar with using ADB and command line

Right now I'm installing VMWare and installing Linux as a virtual machine so that I can deox ROMs, all-the-while combing over the Captivate source code in hopes that I might find some clue as to why our kernel is locked to the AT&T modem files. I'm not even kidding =P

I am assuming you are talking about a stock Captivate. If you haven't done anything to it, I believe you would see this in SETTINGS>ABOUT PHONE
Baseband version: I897UCJF6
Kernel: I can't remember
Build number: Eclair
The 1st thing I did next was a 1 click root.
Next, and this is a personal choice, download and install from the thread SREv1.2.1a. If you read that 150+ page thread (most importantly, the OP) it will tell you that it includes some important things, like sideloading enabled and others.
Then see if you want a lagfix
At that point, your settings should now read:
Baseband version: I897UCJF6
Kernel: Same I think
Build number: SREv1.2.1a
I would install ROM MANAGER and QUICKBOOT from the market asap. Then consider upgrading firmware (baseband version) from UCJF6 to UCJH2 or JH3. Read the threads. And check my signature to see my setup, which I like alot.

How did you side load? did you actually "install" it, or did you "push" it to your phone? If it is installed, it will be in your app drawer. If you pushed it, you'll need to use the my files program to find the app, and just open it and hit install.
I would suggest reading the SRE thread, because that is probably one of the best way to really get your phone faster.
You can also check out the Unleash the Beast thread. Then check out any lag fix by Tayutama (that is what I use, and I'm not sure on the spelling) because that will make your phone quicker!

how would i go about upgrading my firmware without reflashing everything and losing what i have already done? i have read the threads regarding the JH3 rom, but didnt see anything about how to do it without losing my current setup

If I am not mistaken, this is what Titanium Backup is good for.
Rom Manager will help you restore like system restore in windows to EXACTLY as you are, apps, data and all, when you create the backup (which you should ALWAYS do before trying to flash a new firmware or update). Do that now.
Then, get Titanium. Under backup and restore, backup all your apps and app data (will show up white text). Also backup SOME of the stuff in green and red. You can see what to back up. when in doubt, back it up and think twice before restoring it.
If at any time you brick or have problems, boot into recovery, choose reinstall packages which will run update.zip created by rom manager so you can access the clockwork restore menu. Then restore to your backup you made and start over.
Lastly, check out QUICKBOOT in the market. EZ reboot into recovery mode.
oh. i already use those and know how to do backups and recovery. i recovered all my stuff from my i9000 jump to jf6+sre .. guess i will go through the process again.

The $4 for Titanium donate version is well worth it. I did a restore on free, and it took 45 mins of installing apps and pushing buttons. took less than 10 with the donate version with no interaction.
Well I will re-iterate what others have already said. Read.
But here is what I did:
Flash JH3 via Odin
Root via Bugless Pete's Unleash the Beast v0.2
download Terminal Emulator from the market
Type: su
Type: sideloading
By now you are rooted and sideloading is activated and a bunch of bloat ware is gone.
Now install a lag fix (search for Zilch's condensed version of lag fixes)
You can choose between RyanZA's APK in the market or his script or tayatumas update.zip. I also reccomend Chainfires lag fix in the i9000 forums.
Now everything is done: JH3 - Root- Sideloading- lagfix.
Now patiently wait for Supercurios lagfix port for the captivate.
And find a mentor you can secretely stalk and try what they try. There are some people out there who really know what they are doing. Here is aquick list.
Chainfire
Zilch
RyanZA
Tayatuma
Unhelpful
Supercurio
And many more.

was wondering if mods are anyone who post roms.. can also post step by step instructions on how to install the rom, including software/programs needed to flash it. Its hard to search around the forum to download things..But if you post everyting in one thread, it would prolly avoid a lot of noob questions..

This user has already been directed to that link, and complained it was too long.
To the OP, the directions are clear cut and work. Slapshot did a fantastic job compiling all the steps.
Complaining that they are too long and creating another post to complain some more will get you no where and you're probably better off not rooting your phone until you can understand the instructions.
This was my first root, and although HTC phones are supposed to be harder to root, I accomplished it without a hitch thanks to the instructions so please be patient and take the time to read through all the posts.
If the Superguide is too hard for you, this whole thing isent for you

Honestly, if you're really gonna be this much of a baby about it, switch to a more popular phone, and head over to FreeYourAndroid.com. They have 24/7, and very easy to follow tutorials. Before you even go check for our phone, no its not on there. Hence why I said go grab a more popular phone.
As to how we lay out information here, its because its not for noobs to come and start diving into the world of android modding just like that. There is too much information, too many different (yet individually important) ways to do things, and too many different ROMs and the like coming way too fast to have it all posted in one place. General is for general knowledge things and any questions that don't involve a specific thread. Its a great place for noobs to hangout, learn the ropes, and find basic information. The Android Development forum is there for just that, Android development. So this is where all the ROMs, Mods, Root tricks, and the like go. That is an impossible amount of information to condense into one thread. Not to mention its not fair to the devs who deserve the credit for their hard work. On top of this, ROMs require different ways to be flashed properly. They have different directions, different issues, different fixes. It would be insanely stupid to consolidate information any more then we already have.
So if your gonna whine, then as I stated in the General Knowledge thread:
Don't flash ROMs, unlock your bootloader, ect.:
If you don't know what your doing, don't do it. If you don't want to take the chance, don't do it. If youre just going to whine, don't do it. Its the simplest solution to not making a mistake and staying stable.

XDA isn't for babies, and its not for noobs to start doing things straight out of nowhere. Don't get me wrong though, most of us have no issues showing you noobs the ropes. Although, if youre not going to even try and just gonna sit here whine wanting to be babied we won't care the least bit about you. So in conclusion -
Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
Mods pleaseclose this bs thread.
thanks

No it is not rude at all. Slapshot30 wrote a guide that was created into a sticky which explains how to root, put cwm recovery, flash a rom, etc. If you can't follow simple instructions (searching before posting) then this isn't for you.

I may have to register those and set up a redirect back to Google.com.
Chill out guys, damn, you all sound like some grumpy old men. I've been in PPC's when they had B/W screens back in the 90's and I don't get this angry when a new guy ask me some questions. We all had to start out somewhere.

People are very willing to help and most on here do but it's frustrating when someone wants something easier when he has already been directed to the post he needs in another thread before starting this one. The guide that Slapshot created is great and very easy to follow. If that guide is too difficult for you, you shouldn't be doing this stuff to your phone.
Hey everyone!...
So I recently upgraded my 4x HD to Jelly Bean and now I realized that I made a mistake, my phone has been wrecked, performs like crap. I formatted the phone before upgrading to JB but that didn't do any good. At first I encountered ram issue, for no reason without having installed any apps, I was having about 200 mb of free ram compared to average of 270 mb's in ICS, however after going thru topics here at XDA forums, I was able to fix the ram issue and now I have 250 mbs+ normally free but it's still doing me no good. Those games that used to run butter smooth on ICS now lags on JB, especially after few minutes of play, phone gets hot and games start lagging and I have no idea why, I haven't installed any battery saving apps.
Here's some tests/info
Can't post external links :*(

@admins
Sorry to do that, I am not spamming so I hope this isn't a violation of rules, please excuse me.
Given how awfully my phone performs compared to ICS, I am genuinely surprised by the benchmark results, it's about 1.5k higher than it was in ICS.
Short of all that, I see no other solution than installing a custom rom, I need to know what's the best custom rom available and where do I begin. I have never done this before. Links to tutorial and rom would be highly appreciated, thanks :fingers-crossed:
You may noticed that nobody answered your thread yet and there's a reason for it. If you read the rules of xda (I assume you did) there are a few problems here: First and most important, "Search before posting". The ram management and its problems on JB compared to ICS have been discussed many times and as you're a clever person you will find those related threads easily by a brief search. Second rule you didn't follow is, that "Best ROM/Kernel etc threads" aren't allowed on XDA at all, so nobody will answer that. If you ask why you didn't read the rules at all and that's you fault.
For your main question: Installing/Flashing a custom ROM isn't that hard if you (and that part is important) follow the easy accessible tutorials in the general section. If you have a specific problem in the whole unlocking, rooting and/or flashing process we are very likely able to help you but no one will provide a full tutorial in a Q&A thread just because you don't even try to follow said tutorials.
This is not meant as an insult or anything, just a hint for you to get the needed knowledge: Read, everything you don't know, google it or search on XDA as there's a good chance you'll be able to get an answer yourself.
So please follow the rules and/or read them (again) carefully before posting next time.
I wish you a successful future with the android custom ROM scene in this forum.

If you are more satisfied with the performance on ics, I believed that you can always downgrade using the links in this great forum. As for flashing custom rom, there are plenty of them on xda and you can browse through them and choose the one that suits you best, just remember to root and unlock before performing the flashing of custom roms.

I totally get it, it's my bad but the thing is that I did search thoroughly before posting here and there were dozens of custom roms there and I couldn't decide which one to get. Firstly I thought I'd go with Cybermodgen but then I read somewhere that it isn't the best option available so that kind of made me indecisive.
I see that you've been using Optimus 4x HD as well, could you answer a few things, it'll help me decide what to do next.
Which rom are you using?
How do you rate its performance compared to JB?
Should I go back to ICS or move on to a custom ROM?
I'd highly appreciate your help!.
Thanks :cyclops:

I'm using the LiquidSmooth v3.2 by Mourta
with his awesome kernel based on iodaks great work.
The performance I got with this one is the best I ever had (on custom roms)
but you'll have to set up a few things but they are all stated in the dedicated thread over here:
http://www.modaco.com/forum/594-lg-optimus-4x-hd-4xhdmodacocom/
The first three threads are the interesting ones.
I would definitely move on to a custom rom instead of going back to ics
which is in my opinion way below regarding it's performance and/or the amount of it's features.
