Looking for a good stable custom rom. Any suggestions? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I'm done with testing unstable roms and looking for a stable one.
The last rom was or actually is CM10 but, I don't know why, it's getting more bugs from one day to another. And that sucks really.
I reinstalled it several times, clear all datas ... but no hope.
Some roms has "profiles" I think that is a nice option,
so I can switch it at work or in the evening at home.
That "profile" should be in the rom I'm looking for.
Maybe a better calender then this one in the CM10.
That from the SGS III is a nice one but I couldn't find anything like this until today.
A nice clean calendar app and not these small date boxes hard to see more then 2.3 letters.
Everything else has no priority.
The only priority is a "stable" rom.
Uuh, perhaps Android 4.2? Maybe the CM10 with 4.1.2 has some problems or only at my device.
I've found this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780071
It is the Slim Rom 4.1.2 but I'm not really sure if this is the right or if this will work.
Maybe you have some suggestions for me to help me out of this ROM-jungle.

I'm using SlimBean now since about 3 months and it's great. It's stable, smooth and fast. On Antutu I get around 4500 points with 114% OC.

CM10.1 and Helly Bean both seem good and stable for me.

Thanks for reply.
I just installed SlimBean 3.1 with Gapps.
But it seems that I have no luck.
After reboot and back on the homescreen it takes not longer than 1 minute and I got the first failure message.
GMail stopped, then I tried to set up my Google account and at the end the next error.
My handy won't connect to the Play Store with WLAN and without WLAN: Error ... from server: RH-01
And again I first did a factory reset and formatted the system but no luck with that rom.
:crying:

Ok, next try is Helly Bean.

I've just emerged from 2 months ROM flashing to find something fast and stable enough. Tried slim and helly, helly seems the best out of those. I've stuck with Mackay ROM now, never really get any lag in games and it has always been very stable and good on battery. Good luck anyhow.

try FISHEAR's 4.2 Rom ...just tried it too for a couple of days and i think it's one of the most stable 4.2 roms and it's very smooth..

Did you reflash GApps ?

No, I didn't. After 20 minutes pushing away that annoying error message that "gapps stopped" I gave up and tried the next ROM.
Now since 14 hours I've successfully run "Helly Bean 4.2" on my old SGS i9000.
Finally!!!
Thx for all your help and suggestions.

You should try C-RoM Mix 4.2.1 v4. It's very smooth and fast rom. I'm already using it and i'm very happy.

Beast rom is a stable and smooth rom. Build with linaro, had always newest source of CM and gapps.
Taming the Beast.
I'm trying to fight with the language barrier - I'm sorry for my bad English.

Hi im using fishears 4.2.1 its great, when u flashed gapps are u flashing the correct file? Because that happened to me ( the annoying messages) and it was because i installed gapps for cm10 when i needed gapps 10.1.
Fishears is the future!

I'm using Beast ROM 4.2.1 based on cm10.1. Its very stable and good.
Only downside is battery life is bad. have to charge twice a day. Seems it heats up my SGS really from near camera at back.
Any other ROM better than beast?

[Q] Gingerbread Stock Rom or Cyanogenmod 9

Hello guys
I need you help to decide either to stay to my stock gingerbread rom or root my phone and install cyanogenmod 9 on my Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000
Please tell me which one is more stable and better to use..
Thanks in advance
Should just go with Cyanogenmod 10 Nightly. I use my phone every day and get no random reboots, stability issues or incompatible features/apps. Everything seems to work great. I can't see much of a reason to use CM9 since CM10 works so well
I moved to CM10 from XXJW4 2.6.4 and have no plans on rolling back.

Go with CM10! very recommended!
if you want, here there is a tutorial that shows you how to ROOT
your Galaxy s1 stock ROM 2.3.4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k274AsTleAc&feature=plcp
I've been using CM9RC2 for a few months now and it's good. I find it a lot more stable and a lot faster than stock. However, I find I miss a lot of the small things about the stock ROM that just aren't in CM. The Contacts app is poor (can't link contacts, no Facebook integration) as is the stock Calender and the default music player that comes with it is atrocious.
If you can live with those, or are willing to pay for some appropriate replacement apps then I can definitely recommend going with CM
I'm always on gb, lately JW7 gb rom, ext4 format, Semaphore 2. 7.4. Reliable and fast.
Since a week I turned on a CM10. I like a lot, it's stable but very battery drainy and no faster than my previus gb JW7.
I think GB is still the best for our poor i9000...

I switched from Samsung GB to CM9 when it became stable mi-August (now I'm on CM9.1).
I don't plan to switch to CM10 until it is stable (or at least in RC stage) => and I hope it will become stable before 4.2 goes open source and pawitp starts working on next CM!
For me, my phone is much better with CM9: less reboots (I only had one in two months instead of one per week with GB).
My phone is generally more enjoyable: it is difficult to point specific functionnalities (there are many), but the user experience has been a big focus for Google in ICS, and the result is really great for me. I like stock applications a lot (even though contact app may indeed have less functionnalities than Touchwiz one). One the other side, I could not say if the phone is faster or not: so it your main concern is speed, the switch won't change much (unless you go with CM10 which is supposed to be faster). Main drawback for me is that MMS don't work anymore, but I guess it's a problem very specific to my case as I didn't find other people having my problem (and as I didn't use MMS a lot, I didn't take time to investigate heavily the issue).

Just pull out the battery and then insert it after couple of minutes. Then power on while pressing 3 button combo and go to the download mode. Start Odin 1.7 in your PC and try to flash any stock gb rom.

The best way to know would be to read their thread (last few pages and OP) as well as trying it for yourself.
Not entirely sure if it's related to CM, but only on the latest stable (10.0) I've had issues with my WiFi not wanting to stay connected, even on a strong connection.
Everything else works great!

I just installed it yesterday. Problem with mine was that the ASOP keyboard not working. Luckily I just dled teh swiftkey.apk a day earlier. Play store wasn't working for me either and the browser just open and close. That's all i tried. I'm going back to CM9 til I know whats wrong and back up some data.
I installed the stable cm10 and the gapps. Hope others dont run in to the same problem as me
Did you restore your apps or app data? That would most likely cause this problem. Or flashing the wrong gapps.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
No, once I got cm10 installed. I was trying to change some of the settings and found "keyboard(ASOP) stopped working" or some error message along the line of that when I try to enter wireless password. After installing swiftkey, I tried opening play store and it just have "server error"
So I haven't gotten to getting titanium backup yet to restore apps
I just took the latest gapps (the first link on the list), so I'm not sure if that's the right one. I'll try again during the weekend. I'll let you guys know if it goes well.
I'm on CM 10 latest stable build, 4.1.2. Came from GB kk4 plus corn 7 kernel. with latest gapps. I use touchpal keyboard.
I have TiBU pro, but rather than batch install apps, I went though google play to install apps, then selectively restored data on apps with TiBU as needed. While this took some time with this approach (96 apps), CM10 is flawless, virtually no probs at all. it actually seems more stable than before.
at times a little laggy but not a showstopper.
Sent from my SGH-I897
(edit: added keyboard info)
UPDATE: Just flashed to CM10 stable. I found out that the GAPPS I used last time was actually for CM10.1.0 while the CM10 that is out is only CM10.0.0
Be sure to get the right version of GAPPS. The latest one they have is for CM10.1.0

Looks like I'm the unlucky one den. I'm about to try again. I'm using cm's 3.0.8-g2311908 kernel.
Wish me luck.
you are correct, you want the 10.0.0 version from goo, which points to gapps 4.2, backward compatible to 4.1.

thats what I used. I guess the 4.2 set the 'latest' bit in my brain.

[ROM] [MIUI 4.1] MiuiRyder - Miui 3.1.11 (JB) v1.1

Lucainno's I9000 MIUI 3.1.11 Port
ROM DETAILS
Android JB 4.1.2
Miui 3.1.11
Semaphore 2.6.5v kernel
4 way reboot
Seeder 1.4 Preinstalled
My GPS fix installed
Install Notes:
From cwm-
Facotry reset
Format /system
Install from sdcard
<Google Apps not required>

Profit
NOTES:
Ive only ran this ROM for about a day so Ill list it as "beta" for now. Themes worked for me but I had to create an Xiaomi account.
MIUI 3.1.11 is Android 4.1.2 (NOT 4.2.*) So keep this in mind for kernels and such!
I had somewhat of a higher than normal battery drain the first night. Frankly Im not sure if it was the ROM or one of my apps going nuts. I could use some feedback on how the battery drain is from others. This is my first JB port so be gentle (lol). I used CM10 as a base and used Lucainno's MIUI ROM to adapt (or Miui'fy) it. Dont forget to click on the links below in my thanks section and hit the "thanks" for each. Hit them up for a donation if you can.
Mobile data automatically turns off on each boot. You must renable it each time.
Easiest way for me to get the camera to work was to install the CM10 Gallery app. Thats why you have 2 "gallery" apps listed.
Does 911 work?
Answer - I dont know. Its untested. I have the correct T959 RIL and GPS files installed. I checked the framework.jar and it seemed to be in order.
Does GPS work?
Works for me....kinda I will admit the locks were a lot slower than usual. My GPS "fixes" from another thread do not match 2 of the CM10 files. CM10 and CM10.1 differ by 2 gps in /system/lib/hw from what I can tell. It may work though.
Now Im not a developer, but I will still try to bugfix whatever I can.

Change log
1/15/2013 - V1.1
edit build.prop for english
framwork.jar edits
services.jar edits
new Bootsplash
add a gps.xml normally not found. Flashing one of my "fixes" will delete it.
(You should be able to just flash it without wipe for upgrade)
Thanks man, When I have time this week, I'll be sure to flash and let you know how it goes.
Thanks man - I was going to play with this for a bit. For me the GPS just isn't working as well as Id like it too. Just not sure if its me.
Two of the .so files are different from CM10 to CM10.1 so Ill try to switch between the two. (/system/lib/hw/gps.aries.so & gps.goldfish.so)
Its a nice project to work on for the next few weeks.
Got too eager, and flashed it
Some things:
-Boot animation is TERRIBLE, sorry just had to get that out, I'm prob gonna just end up flashing a Nexus bootanimaion, they look cool
-Default language is DUTCH, and there's a popup right before selecting the default language, so I have NO IDEA what i agreed/disagreed to
So far, so good.
I can't really test GPS, almost got into a car accident once because of the faulty GPS on this, since then... no more taking chances, bought a nice GPS, runs great.
I'll give you more bugs/compliments after tomorrow.
Thanks for this btw, needed my monthly MIUI dosage.
That is odd - the build.prop is set to US and when I loaded it up it was in English. Ill look into it though.
Edit: Found it -
ro.product.locale.language=en (was set to "zh")
LOL - ok - ok Ill look into changing the bootanimation
Version 1.1 posted - should be a no-wipe version for those who already installed it.
NICE....
viber
unfortunately,viber has stopped
no work
Anyone have a multi-dpi playstore for this?
Changed my dpi to 201, playstore stopped showing most apps, flashed this and did not work.
For those who have time and can beta test for me:
MIUI 3.1.25
You need to flash the gapps (4.1 version) because I removed it from the ROM.
Feedback / bugs appreciated
I tried some GPS tweaks in some .jar files - Im not sure if it did anything though.
Downloading, gonna try it this week and I'll be back with my comments, really thankful with your hard work.
Best regards.

This ROM is my new daily driver on my work phone.
Its very fast and stable.
No real issues yet.
It rebooted once by itself when plugged into my computer at work but it hasn't happened again so the incident may be isolated.
Thanks for an awesome ROM.
I'm pretty likely to stick with this one for quite a while.

What one are you referring to? The 3.1.11 version in the OP or the .25 version I posted in the thread to test?
The op version, I just swapped over from another ROM and wasn't aware of the new version. but I'd be happy to give the test version a shot.
I'll run it for a few days and report back.

Sorry I realize its been way more than a few days.
I hot caught up on a work project that has been eating my life.
Anyways here is what I have to Freeport (hopefully its of some use to you this far out)
Pros:
1. Very fast and smooth, compared to what I was on prior (hellybean) this Rom is a huge jump up in speed.
2. Battery actually lasts all day for me. This is my work phone so that's not bad at all.
3. Bluetooth tethering works really well.
4. All around this is the best Rom I've been on in quite some time.
Cons:
1. Random reboots, though it never happens when I'm doing anything, only when the phone is sitting there on the home screen. So it really hasn't actually bothered me even though it would normally be a huge issue.
2. (I think this is actually a miui feature so it may not be worth worrying about) the data automatically turns off when you reboot. This wouldn't be an issue except for the random reboots mentioned above. Sometimes this happens in my pocket and I don't notice my data is off until I look at it again.

stable ROMs? for i9305

SHORT VERSION: is there any stable rom for the i9305 that can also run banking apps that look at if your rooted? Or just a stable rom for i9305!? Or even a stock rom that has no bloat-ware (for i9305 of course and in uk)?
LONG:
So I started out a journey looking for a good stable rom and of course cyanogen caught my eye but I unfortunately swapped to a 4g service and swapped my phone right before embarking on this journey to a i9305 - crap!
I thought wow great 4g and 2gig ram it'll be perfect with cyanogen 11 so I waited and no M build for i9305 all year long argh! So I gave up and tried a nightly cyanogen 11 and it was buggy as hell. So gave up on that after a few weeks and trying different updates moved to carbon - again only nightly available even more bugs maybe I was just unlucky in timing but on to cyanogen 10.1 I was going backwards now not the most fun but it still has a few bugs but is way more stable and I loved the speed and camera was great but still it feels a bit old and I still prefer stock . So I am thinking now I either give up n get stock or go on to yet another one but im not confident now ...thanks!
i also like stock ROM...until now didn't found one which will have wi-fi working with stock kernel...so i will give it a try to rXTREME.JB.4.3-V5.1.1 with a custom kernel and see how it works...

Hmm yes too many bugs in all the custom roms on this device wish I could try a cyanogen M build ...
if you want to install rXTREME you MUST make a full wipe....in instruction it says it is recommended....but in reality is a MUST...all kind of bugs...and freezes...just opened screen and tried to unlock it...light effect...instant freeze...had to reboot...
i also wanted a stable CM11....not with huge battery drain...and other force closes....
hi men ,
i used the slimKat rom on my gti9305 and it's the perfection for that
Try Pacman RC1 everything is working very very less Force closes though but I have flashed paranoid ROM gapps and Google play app is not connecting :/
Very less it works

[Trouble] Galaxy S I9000 toooo slow on ICS/JB

Guys, A little Help!
I am currently using my old Galaxy S I9000, as my HTC has gone to Service Centre for a week.
Last time I left it with JB Custom Rom (C-Rom Bean v1.9.0 Final) which was working quite OK! Now its too much laggy and slow all over while on JB Rom. I have already tried CM11, CM10.2, Slimkat, SpiritRom and Dark Unicorn (all 4.x.x and above).
Currently I am on CM7.2, which is working quite fine, considering its based on GB 2.3.7. I was also looking for working Lewa OS link, as I liked the one that I installed on my HTC, but couldn't find one.
Can anyone help me to understand what has happed to make this phone go soooooooo slow. Even if I am unable to instal Android 4 and above, I would still need the link for Lewa OS. If anyone has it, that'd be most helpful.

Mainly, the problem is on the way the different roms use the dalvik vm and the way aforementioned roms are unable to leash cache used. So, my recomendation is a good rom which a good preset over dalvik used of memory and applications like App Cache Cleaner to erase the cache every now and them.
For me the perfect combination is:
1. Stable CM10.2.1 rom
2. Kernel Semaphore 3.3.0 (avoid version 3.3.0s because it gives problems with Netflix, besides version 3.3.0 is perfect and you can activate bigmem with Semaphore Manager App, so 3.3.0s is nonsense) (NOTE: You need odin for installing it, follow this instruction)
3. Gapps: gapps-jb-20130813-signed.zip
4. Semaphore manager app. Settings for Semaphore Manager:
- Smartassv2 Governor: Awake ideal freq 900000 / Up rate 10000 / Down rate 99000 / Max CPU 50 / Min CPU 20 / Ramp up 300000 / Ramp down 300000 / Sleep ideal freq 300000 / Sample rate jiffies 2.
- Deep Idle: Enable
- Lock min freq to 100Mhz: Disable
- Active Scheduler: CFQ
- Bigmem: Enable
5. My build.prop to be placed within /system/ (remember to set for this file rw-r--r-- permissions and change owner to root).
6. A launcher like Zeam Launcher or Lightning Launcher
7. And finally an installed App Cache Cleaner Pro to erase the cache every now and them.
Best.
I have flashed CM10.2.with minimal gapps, but now unable to connect to internet. Tried flashing many times after wiping data, clearing cache and clearing Dalvik cache, but still unable to connect to internet.
EDIT: That as a temp problem with my carrier network. So, I have installed CM10.2 with above details. Working fine so far. Will let you know if there is any problem with this setup.

Try to flash the final build 2.2 of SlimBean 4.3 with SlimGapps.
It is faster than CM10.2 and has much better battery life (especially if you use TRDS mode)

Thanks for your piece of advice, I tried it long time ago but I still prefer a CM10.2.1 + a tweaked Semaphore 3.3.0 + Zeam Launcher + my build.prop + minor removing of CM apps.
Best.

Guys, we have got Android Lollipop 5.0.2 for our device, though an alpha build from @humberos. I am using it as of now, though without Gapps. Its Beautiful! And working!

I have tried to flash the zip last week but it stucked on "extracting system" every time. It just updated my recovery to TWRP 2.8.4.1, but didn't even reboot.
Maybe it is phone that isn't OK anymore. Its internal memory isn't working correctly anmore.

It takes approx 15-20 minutes for installation. You need to be a bit patient with this

Cool I tought it failed as the installation process never took that long yet. I will try again then.

OK, I 've flashed it. Lollipop on the i9000. It took 19min until the process was finished.
I have also flashed PA Gapps pico by Tkruzz, all other are probably too big.
The Omni LP alone (just Omni 5.0) is extremely smooth, but quite slow.
After flashing of Gapps (which BTW work perfectly fine) my i9000 has turned into the slowest device I ever used. It is way slower than Eclair, actually just same slow like my S8000 running CM7 from externalSD card.
It takes 15sec to open PlayStore, up to 2min to download and install an app (even smaller apps), about 5-10 sec to react on pressing any button and the device is often running out of memory and soft reboots are the result. It takes up to 15sec until the keyboard appears etc.
Otherwise all important functions work fine, but Lollipop is too big a task for the i9000 and except that it just works, there is simply no many people who would like to use a device with auch slowdowns. Even biggest fans of the i9000 (I might be among them) will have to face the fact that Android 5.0 is actually out of the hardware capacity of the S1

I myself am using CM10.2. Which works fine, with just a bit of lag. Its either that or gingerbread. Anyways, omni 5.0 for i9000 is just experimental at this stage, with promise for a more stable build by @humberos. It may be light on the system, but who knows.
I'd say buy a newer model if we need new OS as software is as good as its hardware and vice versa.
Omni is excellent and very stable, although in Alpha stage. That isn't my point.
LP system cannot get smaller, the i9000 is simply too slow for Android 5.0
It was just an info for people who dream to use Lollipop on i9000. It is a huge slowdown.
I have much faster devices but I don't use LP even there.

Hey,
I suggest you guys to use SlimBean v2.9 with the latest Slim JB gapps. The phone will be quite fast, despite this device is very old... This version of SlimBean is not available on their site but is here:
https://mega.co.nz/#!6xJnVaBY!qhF1g99N0zE1w6XZd3E2IPgvlBgAJWGrYluZehgajNE
I think further versions are significantly slower and this one offers quite a lot of customization as well. Good luck with the i9000 [emoji3]

Which Android version is that Slim build and why isn't it on the Slim server?
Is there a md5 checksum?
tetakpatalked from N7100
It's an android 4.1.2 and SlimBean version 2.9. It's not on the official site because it's not the latest 4.1.2 version they have distributed. That's the 3.1 if I'm not mistaken.
Sorry I don't have an md5 for the file...

Good to know. How is the battery life there? With CyanogenMod I remember that 4.1 and 4.2 had terrible battery life, while 4.3 was a lot better.
tetakpatalked from Nexus 7 flo
It can last from morning till the evening but of course depends on the usage.
From what I remember Slim on 4.1.2 was real solid, probably one of my favourite roms. 3.1 wasn't that bad either

I've tried today build 2.9
It worked fine but for some strange reason it didn't recognize my wifi router...all other networks just fine, but not the important one. I couldn't solve it, tried everything.
But I have feeling that SlimBean 4.3 is at least as good.
Hey, BTW I have filmed Omni 5.0.2, I will try to edit it and upload tomorrow

I don't think I ever got around to trying the 4.3 version, I remember the 4.2.2 version was a bit hit and miss when it came to battery (but then again, all 4.2.2 roms save Gamerzrom and a few others were). By the time the 4.4.x version came out I moved onto the S3 so I can't vouch for that, but Slim roms are pretty good
And you legend, thanks a lot
