Not sure if it is good. you want to find something that will have a good grip so that when hitting rough terrain it will still hold. I'm always looking for something myself because I bike occasionally myself and having my phone mounted is a great feature as well.

I probably wouldn't trust something to hold my phone unless it had bars that hooked over the front of the phone, too. Because unless that thing has really good grip and can tighten nicely, I can see the phone slipping out of that on rough terrain.

I've been using one of the SlipGrip Bike mounts (search for them on ebay, I can't post links...) It holds securely. (Actually, I modified it to work as a dashmount because I like the Otterbox case but hate having to take it off to use the dock, and I haven't had my bike out this season yet.)

I am using this:

Need car mount for rental cars when traveling

I do a lot of business travel and I have found that the windshield mount is not working well for me and my DINC. The last rental car windshield slanted so far back it made it hard to reach my cig lighter for charge.
I need a dashboard mount but need one that is designed to be taken in/out of cars often...not fixed or where the sticky tape will wear out quickly of get stuff on the sticky when in my bag.
Any suggestions pls???
Get one with a vent clip. They work pretty well.

Actually I find every time I bring only the vent clip I get one of those cars with stupid circle vents which never hold the clip correct. I gave up on the vent type.
This one has both to choose from.

Magnetic Magic! Novel Mounting Solutions

Magnetic Trick #1
Okay, so you are loving that you can sling a football game to your new NC while snacking in the kitchen, but your are stumped.....where can you safely mount your nook? If you purchased a Industriell Easel Cover, then your problem is solved. It turns out that the magnet, built to hold the clasp in place, is a very strong rare earth type. So strong in fact, that you can mount the entire thing on the refrigerator door. I know it seems risky, but the mount is surprisingly firm. Now, I not suggesting you attempt with house full of drunken Super Bowl buddies, or lot of active refrigerator friendly little ones about; but for breakfast news viewing you might find it handy.
****note: Any metal surface will work, you could for example use the side of the refrigerator if you find the door too risky. Please whatever you do, don't use the oven.
Magnetic Trick #2
Still not sold on this versatile NC cover? Then check out this second horizontal or vertical mounting option. Take a metal bookend holder, the old school library type, with the cork or felt protective base. Bend the vertical tab to your favorite viewing angle, then slide it between the flap and back cover. The magnets stick to the bookend, the mount is extremely stable ,and it looks nice to!
Very cool. Thanks for the info. Now if I only had a car from the 60's or older, this would make a perfect dash mount.
I shudder to think of driving an old car like that; drum brakes, metal rings on the steering wheel, no seat belts, metal dash and seats without head rests. How did people live though accidents?
OP thanks for solidifying my choice. I was on the fence before this idea of yours.

It turns out that I have such a car, and old 66 mustang convertible, and I used to drive it, single bowl drum brakes and all, in Houston traffic! Yes, I was younger, yes I was very very, okay, extremely stupid, but the funny thing was the way other people reacted. I had driven an old 3/4 ton company truck and it was dog eat dog.....brutal Darwin style driving, but when I hit the road in the Mustang, the traffic parted like for the Red Sea for Moses. People would wave me in, if you've ever hazarded the Houston Interstate nightmare you can appreciate how incredible that is. It was an amazing experience. Hmmm, you've got me thinking now, I might have go see if that thing will stick to the dash...........

The Nook Color works well with my slingbox, I think I have an AV model. I can also confirm that it tethers to my captivate (froyo 2.2 rom) and slings over cell network.
I almost learned about the magnet the hard way. Was home working on a computer and had my nook next to me with this case and just about set a hard drive down on top of it until I noticed all of the screws sticking together. I just figured the magnet was in the metal buckle and not the case. Never thought about sticking it to the fridge though. Tried it and it worked pretty well. THANKS!

Well, solid state drives are getting cheaper and faster every day. For that matter, I haven't used my venerable old laptop much since I fell in love rooting some nookie. If the recent breakthroughs in Bluetooth plays out I might have to retire the old girl.
Wow! I wonder how early BN opens...
very darn cool...I was trying to stomach getting the Lautner case, as I wanted it to look half descent but want portrait and landscape positions (landscape for airplane flights)...I may go with this...
Thanks to the OP...
I got my nook a week before my wife went into labor. When we were leaving the hospital I forgot my nook on the rook of our car. Our house is about 9 turns and 4 miles away with speeds from 40-60 mph. I got to about 1 mile away from home going 60 mph and I heard a thump. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw my nook on the spoiler. I stopped and everything was fine. I am betting the magnet helped the nook stay on top of our car and I am so thankful I got the case.
Bouncing Baby
Nice magnetic nook save and a new baby to boot. Heck a new baby is almost as nice as getting a new phone, even better because the baby will get continuous free upgrades for life. Samsung and HTC can't match that. All joking aside though, can you imagine how sad and primitive all Dads' hot technology will look to that little one twenty years hence? Well my best wishes to mommy, the little one......and congratulations to the new Dad!
I was planning on going to BN this morning to buy this case and use it with the book-end mod for landscape viewing, but then I found (and ordered) this:
It's under $20 and has 17 5-star reviews and 3 4-star reviews (out of 20 total reviews). There are also a couple of customer-contributed images of a Nook Color in a case sitting in it, in both portrait and landscape.
Hi jason, I saw that stand too and at the time I thought it might make a nice bedside stand. I went with the mag cover for the portability, the protective cover it would provide and, because of my poor impulse control..., the old "I have to have it right now". Its best feature, the magnetic component, was an unexpected bonus.
I'm still interested in how your stand performs, stability wise or, any such observations you might wish to share, once you take the plunge and get some user experiance.

Wish it could do landscape too tho.

Ask me about my DODOcase

Well, got my DODOcase in the mail today. It won't shield your Nexus 7 from large amounts of physical abuse, but I got it so I can put my tablet down without having to worry about scratching it up. There is indeed a magnet embedded in it to turn the tablet on when you open it, off when you close it.
I would post a picture, but I am not allowed by the forum software.

That seemed like it devolved into a patent argument. I will answer questions there too though.
Question: if you flip the cover all the way back, does the magnet turn off the screen? Thanks.
How does it fell when holding it? As in, with the cover folded back does the thick side feel strange? Do you trust the adhesive? How thin is it when closed? How well does the stand work on a normal desk surface?
Thanks!

I am assuming you mean setting it on its side in land-scape mode? That is the one thing that is a little weird. From what I see on the site, you basically but the elastic band underneath the opposite end. It keeps it up-right, but there is not much room for adjustment. I don't use tablets in that way very often though.

I should clarify that that actually works well for me.
I just got one of these DODOcases and I'm really impressed with it. The adhesive is surprisingly strong, once you have the Nexus 7 in place it does not budge a millimeter. I'm very partial to the low profile that this case offers. The 'smart cover' functionality works just as expected. It's not going to give you an Otterbox level of protection, but it should be enough do the job in preventing damage if you were to accidentially drop it in a normal day-to-day situation.
It's not quite as comfortable to hold with the case as it is without, particularly in landscape mode. That's to be expected since I feel that one of the real strengths of the Nexus 7 was how comfortable it is to hold, and with any case you're likely to give up a little bit of that. It feels like you're holding a small hardback book, and that's not an unpleasant feeling. The adhesive is so strong that I might be more hesitant to remove the Nexus from the case as often as I might with a different case, but that might be a good thing. The only other drawback to the case is that the stand functionality that the case offers is pretty limited, and as a result it doesn't support very good viewing angles for landscape mode viewing on a desk or table top. If they marketed a stand to go along with the case they could probably do some business.
The aesthetic touches do have a nice emotional resonance for me, it really does add a classic 'reading a book" feeling to using the Nexus.
All in all I'd give it a 9/10

I don't use facebook lol oh well. going with treegloo
I picked up a Dodo hardcase for my N7 yesterday straight at the HQ. It's pretty awesome all around.
Adhesive is strong and as was said previously, the device doesn't move a mm. That said, the power and volume buttons are awkwardly positioned because they are slightly set back from the edge of the tablet so you need to sort of wedge your finger under (not far) to push them. The landscape stand works pretty well using the elastic band and clips but the angle is not adjustable. Folded back the device feels good in the hand and the magnet doesn't affect the device improperly when in the fully open position behind the tablet.
The look and feel of the case are very high quality and I love that it's made start to finish here in SF. I got a little tour of the factory, which is probably smaller than you imagine given the brand presence and there were some cases being assembled while I was in there. Everyone that I spoke with was super nice and you know this is a company that believes in their product and would stand behind it. It seems that they've come up with a great, innovative repurposing of bookbinding machinery.

Take full advantage of magnet screen off feature!

Lol this is dorky but its actually something i wish someone had brough to my attention.
While you're sitting at your pc, or hunkered down watching a movie I found that putting my wallet on top of my nexus acts like those fancy smart cases. then i don't ever have to push a button, i just lift my wallet... SCREEN ON.... put my wallet down.... SCREEN OFF!!! obviously its the built in magnetic sensors meant for their cases, but i hate cases, and so if you have anything you carry around regularly that has a magnet, it just slightly more convenient
Hmm this seems to be interesting. I remember seeing those "surfaces" of slim magnets in a shop few days ago. If you buy those, then you just need some deco on the top if you'd like (I'm thinking of using an old T-shirt with some cool pic or writing on it), glue it on the top = custom smart case
Great find! I will try and find those
Edit: This is what I mean, but a little thinner, and of course bigger to fit the tablet. This is a magnet I have on a fridge. I can't test it however since my N7 hasn't arrived yet (expecting it in a few days).

Considering you're not using a case... I'm going to be blunt and say what you are doing is incredibly stupid. There is NOTHING convenient about that, instead of SIMPLY pressing the button on the side you now have another object which isn't even attached to the tablet to keep track of and move around, instead of SIMPLY pressing a button.
HOLY CRAP WHY!
Yes I know that, but what is wrong with keeping it covered? Protecting from dust, or for deco? I don't think anything is that useless, especially these DIY creative stuff, and yes I'm going to be blunt and say that your post is incredibly stupid and pointless
Why don't you take your nexus 7 and look at it... compare the amount of physical buttons to your phone 3 years ago. Heck compare the amount of physical buttons to the galaxy s3 that came out mere months ago. you're being narrow minded if you honestly can't see the value of anything that would be an effective alternative to a hardware button.

How is putting a magnet or a magnet in your wallet on your phone creative? How is that any better than pressing a button on the side of the phone? How?

PS Blurex has at least 2 models. I prefer the slim case.

I can't actually believe I just read this, and I just hope you are a massive troll. I am not going to present not even a piece of mountain of arguments I can open now. I'll just move away from you before I get ban. Your post brought nothing slightly productive here.
For the end of this: if you'd like to keep your sensor protected (and I'll ignore the fact that I was actually referring to the screen) just move away from this topic and lock your device with the power button. That is not the purpose of this thread anyway. Thanks.

If this, well written very useful thread makes u so mad that you are worried that you will get banned why don't you check out this website, it may calm you down. www.hasbro.com/mylittlepony
EDIT; or you could check out this website. www.apple.com people at this website are just like you, they don't like to do things in fun and creative ways. They like to do the same boring thing, over and over and over.

I'm surprised that there isn't a (decent) case (not the crap you see on ebay) on the market that makes use of the mag feature.

Despite the low price, I love my Poetic case. It has a good quality leather shell, uses the magnets, and has a hand strap and stylus holder. Best $6 case ever.

I'm failing to see why everyone is attacking the OP. If you don't think its convenient, don't do it. If you think it's a stupid idea, don't do it. We all live in free countries, right? OP was sharing some information, and a button- sized magnet sounds like a pretty cool idea for people who don't use cases

This was fun lol. I'd like to refer all aformentioned haters to the 4th word of my post "dorky". I knew full well this would only be helpful to a very small few people who carried a money clip with a magnet in it, or i guess those who just carry magnets out of habit. But i'd like to explain the physics behind why i though this was easier.
physical button method:
as we all know a force applied mandates an opposing force, especially to remain static. so what it comes down to is you having to pick up your nexus 7 because the button is slightly underneath the bezel, and if you have big enough hands squeezing it, thus applying equal and opposing forces to turn on your screen.
Wallet/button magnet method:
picking up your small wallet, which weights less than your tablet by many times, this reduces overall work required, is accomplished in a bit shorter time, and probably leaves a smaller CO2 footprint on our environment (i just watched a ted talk).
Thanks for all you who could just enjoy a friendly tip and not lose your heads over it. There are litterally thousands of threads just in this nexus 7 forum that are even more useless than what i poted
Also i have a strong dislike for cases on my devices, but I will admit i've never been more tempted than by some of the ones you guys shared, much thanks for the heads up!
