Hello Friends,
Wanted to ask you all if Class2 Sd Card is suggested for app2sd.
The whole reason of buying a 8GB SD Card was to use apps2sd.
But after buying i realized its a class 2 and when I flashed Dwang-v1.11 ROM my G1 is running very smooth.
The latest v of Dwang has apps2sd.
This post is to confirm my understanding and create awareness about the Class 2,class 4 and class 6 SD Card.
Thanks in advanced as I have always got amazing response from all u guys.
Class 6 is recommended.
Yep Class 6 all the way.
The class of an sdcard is a measure of the *minimum* performance.
Not the maximum.
A real good class 2 card can be faster than a bad class 6.
Or, it could be relative to chip yields. Basically, not all chips produced will be exactly identical, some may just happen to work faster than others.
In other words, a lucky class 2 card is fine. The recommended minimum of class 6 increases the CHANCES of having a good experience with it.
I also have a class 2 card, 16gb. All normal Android roms run great with it, but don't even think about running Hero. Your phone is so slow, it's unusable. No problem with any of Cyanogen's roms.
I used an 8GB class 2 w/ apps on ext2 for ages, didn't have any issues. The performance wasn't noticably different when upgrading to an 8GB class 6 w/ ext3. You'll be fine.
Any way to turn off the apps 2 sd on Cyanogen's mod
Hello,
I just flashed my phone with the latest Cyanogen's mod 4.2.14.1 and experiencing a lot of lag while opening any application.
Even the dialer gets stuck, messaging is getting stuck.
It would be great if the apps run on the rom rather then through the sd card till I get a class 6.
Any help is highly appreciated, as I have started avoiding making calls from my G1 due to the lag.
Else suggest a better ROM if there is no easy solution to turning off apps2sd
Worst Class 2

Hi AdrianK,
Thanks for sharing your experience but may be i got the worst quality of class-2 mmc as mentioned by lbcode, which might be causing this problem.

The system applications are stored on the ROM, not on the SD card.

Most roms now, if you don't have an EXT partition, will skip apps2sd.

Hi,
Has anyone tried either the Lexar or Patriot 32GB microSDHC card with their Droid/Milestones?
Any issues at all?
Thanks!
Any information at all would be appreciated.
I haven't been able to find any information by searching forums.
I am running Cyanogen 6, 2.2.1, so I should be able to format the 32GB card. I'm just concerned with compatibility issues with the original Droid 1 and the Milestone.
Anyone?
Thanks!
this would be interesting for me too. im searching a 32 gb card which is workin!
yeah, would love to hear something about 32gb goodness too ^^
Yeah I'm surprised that we aren't getting more feedback with this topic.
I've found threads with 32GB cards with EVOs and Droid Xs, but, that's about it.
I think it helps if you manage to get it formatted properly, either on a desktop computer or on your device (if it supports it).
I'm tempted by the Patriot 32GB Class 10, but, some of the people on Newegg seemed to have some issues with it on a their Droid Xs.
Im using a 32gb class 10 lexar microsd in my milestone, so far its working great and have had no problems

Do you experience any subjective speed increases with the new card?
Have you run any SD Card speed tests with the card? If not, would you mind doing so and reporting back?
Just wondering if the Milestone will benefit from a class 10 card (or any card greater than class 2).
Thanks again!
i got 8.8MB/s write speed and 12.7MB/s read using antutu system review btw im also using apps2ext and cm7. I dont know by using apps2ext if the benchmark is effected. I was using a 16gb class 2 Kingston card before this and generally haven't noticed much of a speed difference but I mainly use the card for music
Edit: SD tools gets 10.6MB/s writing speed and 14.4MB/s reading speed

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your results. Those performance speeds are quite attractive!
I'm surprised that you you don't feel any subjective speed increases though. I would have thought that when accessing applications stored on your SD card, or when you initially remount your SD card and have to search through media using Gallery, that the difference would have been significant.
Although it is possible that our phones doesn't support much more than Class 2 speeds.
But, at least we know that the Lexar card is compatible with the Droid/Milestone!
Thanks very much for the information!

Class 2 is (roughly speaking) 2MB/s writing speed. Imagine you want to copy a lot of mp3's or a movie (or use it as USB dongle) with 2MB/s. unusable.

Oh sure, I understand that a faster card will make file transfers with my desktop much faster. I guess I was hoping to get more of a performance boost from my phone (ie. Apps2SD) with a faster card.
I'm not sure I'd call 2MB/S unusable for desktop file transfers. But, then again I don't change the music on my phone more than once a month. I can see it being more troublesome if you changed it more regularly. And hey, more speed is always good
Something else to consider - I have an 8GB class 2 card.
Loading angry birds seasons from my SD card = 15 seconds
Loading from internal memory = 9 seconds

Yes, that's a great point. I just don't know if the Droid/Milestone can take advantage of a microSDHC card with a higher transfer rate than Class 2.
Have you tried a faster card with your phone?
Does anyone have any comparison numbers with faster cards and application loading using Apps2SD?
Thanks!

Wow, impressive numbers. I wish the Droid/Milestone had half that performance
Is anyone using the Patriot 32GB with a Droid/Milestone?
With the Milestone SD card which came with the phone (I think this is a UK retail version) "OEM SD SU08G", I got these results:
3.8 / 14.8 MB/s
I added this simply to have something to compare with.
Will edit this image of the results in later: thumbnails37.imagebam.com/12224/fae506122237685.jpg

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your results!
You're the first person I've heard of who is using this combination. Your speed test results are very impressive.
May I ask you to clarify your comment regarding reboots? Do you mean that if you move large files, or a large quantity of files from your PC to your Milestone, that you have been experiencing reboots? What other issues have you been experiencing?
Have you noticed any kind of speed increase?
Thanks!

In my place, there are many persons who are using this sdhc, so don't worry MS can support it.
In our experenice from our fourm, some MS work great and nothing happened.
But, some MS including my MS have the problem about reboot, app exit when you are using it, if you move a large quantity of files once a time from PC to MS.
There is also a problem from my experenice, not for all others.
My MS could not identify the SD card, or need to format the Sd card.
In this situation, the SD card repairation by some sd format app could be settle the problem, and then the card is back. The information of the repairation shows that there are some unknow link, bad sector, or error link. When I look further, I find the files that often appear above three error message are in the below folders /sdcard/LOST.DIR and /sdcard/LazyList. Thus I think these are the reason why the problem happens.
There is an interesting thing. I have fat and ext partitions in my card, but the partition of ext never has any problems. Last month, I format the fat32 by 64K formation, and it works well so far. (someone prefers 32K)
The speed increase. Yes, but not so significantly. I feel the system is more smooth. The delay when open the app is also less, but you know the speed also involve the size of memory. So, it's haven't extreme different.
Hey folks, I used Generic Nook-2GB-SDCard-CW3010-VGCM7InstallerAsALTinMultiBoot-v6.zip to load CM7..but I was wondering if I can load other SD bootable ROMs with this? I would like to try others if I can. The reason is Im having issue with CM7 being finiky on my NC, like lag opening, not being able to open Market. Any suggestions to these issues too? Thanks, really appreciate the help.
You would need to wipe the SDcard before you can try other ROMs.
Also mainly not the ROM causing the lag and unresponsive but rather the SDcard class/manufacture. What kind of SDcard are you using?

It isn't that class 2 is better than 4. Normally the opposite is suppose to be true.
The issue is the class ratings just tell you the sequential write speed of the drive. Which is nice for copying data to the drive, but isn't helpful in determining if the drive is good enough to run an OS off of.
As this thread shows...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633
The 4K write speed is really important if you are running a ROM from the SD card. And Sandisk does a LOT better at this than other SD cards.
So in this case a Sandisk C2 would likely be better than a PNY C4.

I agree with Ravynmagi - I am running CyanogenMod on my NC using a Sandisk C2, and it is very responsive. I have found others to be not quite as good.
i upgraded to a new SD card and run antutu to see how fast it is but to my surprise this new class 10 card is not faster than my old class 2 card.
so is there like a hardware limit or why could that be?
both cards have about
6mb/s write and
15mb/s read.
anyone got some better results with a class 10 card?

Some brands are faster than others even if they are from a lower class.
For example, my Sandisk class 2 is faster than a Kingston class 4.
Which brand is your card???

Hi, with my 16GB Class 10 card I get these speeds;
Write 12.3 MB/s
Read 16.9 MB/s
My card is a no brand card I bought from eBay in March for £16.

I have a Samsung Plus 16GB Class 10 and get:
According to SD Tools: 12.4MB/s write and 17.2 MB/s read.
According to AnTuTu: 11.3 MB/s write and 14.7 MB/s read.
16GB Sandisk Class 10 (Antutu 2.3.1, 2nd run.)
10.4 MB/s Read
10.0 MB/s Write
The card has 12.4 GB on it of real data before testing.
This is on GR3, which I don't think has any "SD-Card optimization". (Too lazy to check.)
Keep in mind that we don't know, at least I don't, how Antutu tests. If it's testing with a lot of independent reads/writes, the speed will invariably go down. (If copying a single large file from my computer, I get a much higher throughput.)
"Class 10" should only mean that your card is able to sustain 10MB/s of continuous writes, it doesn't say anything about access times/block erase speed (which can influence any benchmark.)
Hi TrymHansen, there is a free app called SD Tools which does nothing but test SD card speeds.
Edit:
FOR ANYBODY ELSE READING THIS THREAD:
The class rating of a card indicates the minimum speed the card will write at. Class 10 = 10 MB/s write speed. Read speeds are usually higher than write speeds.
Anil

I can confirm the quality of Kingston SD cards. My 16GB "Class 10" gets the following in SD Tools:
Writing Speed: 7.2MM/s
Reading Speed 13.5MB/s
It's good enough for me as I was considering just getting a Class 6 as I don't exactly do much HD video recording, but if you need the speed - avoid this card!
I am using Sandisk 32gb class 4 card.
Antutu Benchmark
SD card write: 5.6 MB/S
SD card read: 8.9 MB/s
Your SD Cache size matters when u perform SD Speed test in your phone. If you are using CM7 ROM, the default is a mere 128kb cache.
Cache size of SD can be from 128kb to 4096kb and different sd cards will perform better/worst with different cache sizes.
Just thought it would be a good info to share.
why is it that im getting two diff figures when i test my card with antutu and sd tools?
sd tools - read 33MBs
write 6.1MBs
antutu read 10MBs
write 2.6MBs
something doesnt add up
sd read is 2046 default on miui rom
my card is a ridata 8gb class 10
which figure could be correct?

This is sort of true, but if it was a mere cache it would always be a good idea to set it as large as you can afford RAM-wize. This is not the case.
It is a read-ahead cache. In short that means that whenever a read is requested, it first checks the cache to see if the data is already there, if not it reads the amount of bytes specified no matter what.
Increasing the read-ahead cache will help when reading large files, since it leads to fewer (actual) io-commands being executed.
However, if you're reading a lot of small files it will hurt performance, since for every read issued it will read a lot of unnecessary data before it can go on to the next request.
(I also think this is at a block-level, which means that it merely reads the next blocks, not knowing if they actually belong to the file you're reading at the moment, but not sure about that.)

The bigger the class, the more performance you get, so you would obviously want to purchase class 10 if you can afford it buy the largest class you can get, though I would suggest *at least* 6

To save music and document, a class 4 is enough. (this is what I use)
If you want to move most of your application to your sdcard get a higher class.

This is not true! The class says something about the min performance, it says nothing about the max performance. It is possible a class 6 beats a class 10 card.
So my advice check some tests, where they compare each sd.

get a class 4.
There's a reason why most of the Windows Phone 7s uses an internal class 2 microsd card.
For writing many files onto an sdcard at the same time (lets say while using an app) it would be faster the lower the class.
But obviously a higher class would let you write a single file faster, but with a class 4 you could easily record HD video on your Optimus Black with no lag at all.
Save the money and get a class 4.
Thanks guys for ur suggestions..

Never heard about higher class card using more power. Unless you keep allot of apps on the sd there shouldn't be issues. The higher the class the shorter will be the response time and higher the read write speed.
As for video keeping in mind that for full HD 6Mbs is enough. Which means that with luck class 4 might be ok. Likely it won't.
I have good results with hd video class 4 on Bada phone, but my OB hiccups with class 6 ( that's still to be confirmed if it is software or hardware issue).
If price is not a issue get the highest possible 10 is about optimal for phone higher than that is overkill.

U wrote so many stupid things that I cannot respond em all, so I will respond one: the only reason why W7 phones use class 2 is that those cards are cheap as autumn leaves.
"with a class 4 you could easily record HD " compare the bitrate of full HD stream with recording performance of class 4 card !!!!!!!!!!!!
euphorcimoron - take in mind one straightforward experience which can obviuously can be seen when You start Your OB ( but some x%$#@* here are to blind to see that ): multimedia files are scanned each time You boot the phone. More files -more time, faster card- less time.
So: get the card as fast as possible: better video recording, apps installed on SD work faster, faster copying of multimedia files into Your phone by any connection ( USB,WiFi), faster booting and so on.
Is there a limit ad to what the OB can actually utilize? I didn't buy a 10 because the sales guy didn't think the phone would have the read write speeds to need that high of a class?
