Antivirus and internet security

I recently came across a advertisement saying that "Norton #1 in internet security". I just wonder how secure that these softwares are. Don't they know that there are cracked version of their latest product in the underground. Even their software can easyly cracked. I feel like wasted my money in prescribing license for their internet security!!!!!!

Nearly any piece of software can be cracked so you don't have to pay for it. But you shouldn't use cracked/pirated software, and my main man MC Double Def DP will use his rad dance moves to tell you why in this hip, up to date video. Remember, don't copy that floppy!

I've always steered clear of Norton myself. Uses way too much resources. I use Kapersky myself.

Or just use one Free ones like AVG or Avast. I use Avast Home and I much prefer it to McAfree Enterprise that work forces on me.
I use my Wifi Router's Firewall and Windows Firewall.
Doesn't cost me a penny, no-one is been ripped off, and I prefer it to what any of the OTT software has to offer anyway.

Same here use Avira Free "nag screen removed" when you can get software for free that does the job why pay?

I have Norton & it does it's security job. But, it sucks the brains out of my PC. This will be the last year paying for it

i use Microsoft security essentials, its a good anti virus, and its free!

Avira free here + superantispyware + mbam(all free) +noads +o route a ton of pages to 127.0.0.1.On linux, half of that.

i use Avast Antivirus, and it's free and no ads. I'm happy with Avast

Its funny how no one seems yo know about Bullguard. It's probably the best antivirus program i've ever used.
Started using it about 4 years ago. No a single virus since. The only times i get them is when i disable it to use cracks, and even when infested it removes everything!
Once a mate of mine had a virus. Avast, AVG free, Norton, Trend Micro and AVG paid didn't find anything.
Buklguard found to to 100 threats! It was able to remove it all but it was so deep in the registry we had to start over. But does show how well it is.
And best of all, also has a Mobile edition that takes near nothing in resources.
*forgot to tell, on my Win8 tablet with 2gb ram and 1 GHz processor, it usus less than 15% when scanning incoming downloads and less than 5% when in standby w/ real time scanning on.

I use an old version of Norton that doesn't drain PC resources (It doesn't have all the bloated back up software. If I want to back up files I just do it manually to an external HD), but I still get the latest "Live Updates" anti-virus definitions, and that seems to work well.

+1. This is what I've been using. If I wasn't too stingy to pay for a copy of ESET or Kaspersky, I'd pick up one of those. Until then, This is what I've been using for the past year or two.

Never had any resource issues with any version of Norton on any computer and a 3 licence version can be picked up for £20 or less if you know when in the year to go shopping.
Never trusted McAffee, not after having fun and games getting it to update on a friend's PC back in the 90s, and then when I worked at NTL it was their AV of choice, which merrily let nimbda work its way through all their PCs.
It was a contractor with Norton on his own laptop which highlighted the infection. Not impressed.

I have tested many antyviruses, but I prefer AVG Free.

I have Norton on my machine for years, and it hardly fail me at any point.
Several fake antivirus and Zero attack were thrown at NIS but it managed to block it all.
There is no real crack for for Norton. There is only a trial - reset for Norton, which need you disable the "Norton Tamper Protection", which need to be done by yourself, to allow access to the registry and files of Norton.
Without your command of disabling the Tamper Protection, it will not allow any access to the Norton Files. So you won't need to worry about Virus shutting down your Norton. Keep your Norton SONAR2 up and you will be fine.
It is a paid product, but it is hella cheap at some site.
I have been using Norton since 2009. Norton 2008 and earlier were craps.

I've been using Norton for quite some time now also, and prefer Norton 2006 to the latest edition Norton 360. I still get current "Live Updates" with Norton 2006. It has a simpler more streamlined user interface, and has not failed me yet.

Norton blows. Hard. Use avast. Its free, people contribute to the virus definitions and the database is updated almost daily.

Actually Norton is #1 right now in picking up the most viruses. They do tests on that stuff, and I can have it for free by either taking a copy from the store I work at or doing 3 months trials. Forever.

Ok so i just formatted my pc, got windows 7 64bit.
just going about installing stuff, and
not sure what virus scanner to install.
whats the best one, i like a nice quiet scanner that does its job and never pops up.
ideas?
o price isnt a problem, so dont care how expensive.
previously i been using the free windows virus protection

I have avira antivir personal. It's free and works great on my laptop. There's also a premium version but I don't now how much it is.

AVAST works great and its free

Been using Microsoft Security Essentials since 1 year. Running very good. No attacks from virus even though I have used many virus full pen drives. Many of my friends come to me for cleaning virus on the pen drives. Not even a single virus danced in my pc, they were kill as soon as detected.
Its free too!
Was using Bitdefender and Norton before but they really slow down my pc since they are heavy Softwares.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's one of the better free ones I've found throughout the years, and I use it to protect all my computers (6+)

I guess you are using linux so no need of any antivirus.

I use symantec corp. antivirus.

I use a Mac.

I use avg free and malwarebytes both are free, most people confuse malware with viruses. Malware is malicious software on ur PC like that windows anti virus that takes control of your whole computer!

I use AVAST Home Edition - free and you can set it so you never see a pop-up unless you get hit.
But - a non - free version is malwarebytes.com - which nowdays is a must-have for all computers. It's 30.00 bucks for a years sub but I can't say enough good things about it.
No more junk/popups/trojans that try and sneak past your A/V and I've never had it hurt my resources on my CPU's at home.

I see absolutely no point in using antivirus on Android. I've sideloaded ton's of apk's from various websites and never ran into any problems. Pointless IMO.

Used it for about but also see no point of a anti virus on phones its those pesky advert that pop up in the status bar I want to completely stop

If you're not viewing dodgy sites and not downloading dodgy apps, there is no need. It is a waste of battery and resources imo

As the average new virus and the average 0-day is able to keep hidden for up to a year I see no point for anti virus at all! Heuristics almost never work correctly, and the number of possible security holes on a computer is so vast that it's unlikely they ever will :-\
Oh, and that time span is not my personal opinion, it stems from a study made by an employee from Norton Security (IIRC).

I've only installed avast for the anti-theft module.

Its not as though you have Terabytes of data to protect. At the most I imagine you would want to protect photos, sms/mms, music and perhaps app settings and highscores.
All of these can easily be backed up to a pc or cloud storage and its a good habit to get into because in my opinion flashing roms, radios ,kernels, hboots, etc has a much higher probability for data loss than a virus threat.

Ran lookout for a few weeks earlier in the year but have since binned it off. Ive never ran into any probems

Opinions differ. Tbh most antivirus use such a small amount of resources that I always think it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. I use Dr Web Light. Works for me.

antivirus question

Is an antivirus program really necessary on android and if so what does everyone recommend? I have AVG on my pc and laptop, but I have had issues on 4 separate computers running it ( which kept me pretty busy this week btw lol ) and thus a little leary of it t the moment. Thanks in advance.

Avast - would be my recommendation.
The more popular the platform the bigger the risk that viruses will start appearing. Android is pretty popular, wouldn't you agree?

Well, I don't have one and I'm not going to get one. Antivirus apps use a lot of RAM, which is understandable but because of the Ace's limited hardware I don't want to give this RAM to the app. So no thanks for me, then again I am only 13 and don't have any info on my phone that I don't want others to see.

agree with u.. there's too many variant of android, so it will be hard for virus to attack i think.. right now i'm using lewa without antivirus,

On the other side if you see, rather than just safety against viruses, avast ! Additionally offers anti-theft for phones which uses root access. But if your phone is stolen & the guy knows rooting, your chances are toast but on a general basis it is atleast better than nothing. I use avast ! Regularly just to be safe. On my computer too. Avast ! Is the best & is absolutely free for android. You can try it !

I use Dr. Web light from the Play Store. It's a free application and has always protected me as it updates it databases frequently. And yeah, IMO, virus protection is needed, I've had two so far. Thankfully Dr. Web caught them and quarantined them. I deleted the files concerning the viruses and was fine.
It also doesn't use too much RAM, on my Ace it uses only ~2-5 MB. Though right now its showing 794KB which is unusual.

IMO, as long as you know what you do to your android, I think there's no need for an antivirus.

Antivirus programs do conflict on a Windows machine, but what about the android OS. Can you have more than one?

any idea: if you are using kaspersky and avast at the same time on the android phone? is that bad...

There should be no issues. However, why would you need 2 on the device? Also, the 2 different av programs would use up a lot of resources such as ram and battery I would think.

No but it would really put a nag on your system resources. Some people think its a good idea. I personally don't. Having 2 different programs!s would technically protect you more because you have different databases protecting you, but I wouldn't enable web protection on both, you might start getting issues there.

You could, but you probably shouldn't due to the impact on performance.
It's entirely possible that some would conflict with eachother, but not all combinations of AV programs will.
This is essentially the same as it is on windows - you can put multiple AV programs onto a windows PC, but you probably shouldn't, and some AV products don't play well with eachother.
The real key to avoiding viruses is to just not do dumb **** online... Antivirus programs are just there to reduce the chance of infection when you do something stupid. Same thing on android - from what I've been hearing, more than anything else, the vector on android is sketchy free games (because these appeal to non-sophisticated users (often kids who don't have a way to make electronic payments, so they have to use free apps), who aren't watching carefully what permissions are being requested)

Good points. I just liked avast because of the firewall capability it has.
