Simple, don't put a kernel in the ROM,you are not obliged to do that. Also,CoCafe doesn't want his kernel by default in ROMs.

If people want to install ROM they need to use custom recovery. Only kernel that is supported now is CoCore, so 99% of chance is that they will already have CoCore.

If so,I think you need to extract it.Better ask CoCafe if he gave you the permission or look for a guide.
Also, your "clean" behaviour will not lead to an answer.

You can use this file type as well... Check updater script of any existing rom which has a kernel of same for type... And copy the same line... But first ask for permission from the cook of the rom...
Or extract your kernel and search for mount points for kernel and use it..

Boot up into TWRP, click "BACKUP", and uncheck everything except system and boot, and make the backup. Then boot back into android, find the backup (in twrp folder), upload it, and post the link.

That should get you by FOR NOW. As soon as the full 4.4.4 SBF is released, you should flash the entire thing. Otherwise, you may brick when you take the NEXT OTA (the one that hasn't been released yet).
You don't want to brick, right? So just flash the full 4.4.4. SBF when available.

Go to system/priv-app and delete "Phonebook.odex", "SemcContactsProvider.odex", "SemcPhone.odex" then reboot to recovery and flash the zip and I think it should be working.
Telling you only because I personally tried this method and it works
don't forget to take a backup in case something wrong happens
