What's next for WP8? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that we have Windows Phone 8, what is next? What features will make it better and which are missing? Would you like to see things like a notifications center, a third screen swiped to the left, start screen background pictures or more tile colors? How about a file explorer or the ability to receive and download mp3 files via email instead of just being able to listen to it? WP 8 is great but it could be so much more.

Is There Something Better For Notifications? (Stock Stinks!!)

Hi,
I have been searching and looking for something to replace the mechanism for notifications on my TP CDMA (Sprint).
When my calendar notification, SMS notification or voicemail notification activates, its a tiny icon in the status bar at the top, which I have to tap multiple times and then I get the annoying HTC status screen and then I need to tap the icon for VM, or alert to see what my notification is...
I find this very annoying and its easy to miss important notices.
Isnt there a better way? Ideally, something that would automatically play a ringtone and display a window on the screen (even after standby) until I dismiss it....
Does anyone know of something like this?
Thanks!
If you go into Settings -> Sounds & Notifications -> Notifications
You can configure how the phone notifies you about each event, so for a SMS you'd set for it to "Display Message on Screen"
Granted this is not a huge amount a flexibility and a lot of the time the pop up dissapears and one would have to click up at the status bar again to get it down, yet it is still options.
I haven't looked into differenet notification programs / systems as I am quite content with the stock ones just changed to my liking.
Personally, I hate the pop up, always comes up in the middle of something and just gets in the way.
Is there any way to actually change the look of the bubble ???? I'd ideally like it to be centered on the screen, instead of at the bottom. Also, if you looked more like a bubble, or something else, that would help too. I've been Googling around for about half an hour, and have found NOTHING except changing the bubble color on iPhone and some apps for changing those.
Why aren't there any on WM ????

Francarl is working on trying to change the look of the bubble Check out FingerMenu in the Dev & Hacking section. It should look something like that if it works.

I just set everything to vibrate and flash. I have rlToday setup with 4 BIG finger friendly icons for SMS, Email, Missed Calls, and Voice Mails at the bottom of my Today screen... with their respective counters. A Vibrate and Task icon is enough already. Looking at the today screen will let me easily see anything I need to worry about.
rlToday is a today plugin based on XML which you can create to look like anything you want. Highly customizable.
dontforget works but appears initially to conflit with s2u2 so I'm using dontforget insdtead. hope to find a way to do both.

I hate how I have to constantly go back and turn on "display" for reminders. It disables itself all the time.
dontforget is doing that? not had that issue.
Hey, i have used PhoneAlarm for a few years with past phones, just loaded it on my new Verizon TP, works great as usual. It is not free, ($15 i think), but has been well worth it. Google PocketMax PhoneAlarm (you want the pro version). It is very customizable (skins, custom sounds and intervals for different events), has profiles that can change alarms based on your location, meeting status, or manual selection, and supports TF3D. It also supports a popup on new event and with the notification softkey that allows you to easily click and address the event. I started using it because it allows custom repeat alarms (different sounds after a certain period of time as well as custom intervals). I needed something to alarm pleasantly a few times then an obnoxious alarm every 20 seconds to wake me while sleeping. I'm a paramedic in sometimes remote locations dispatched via this phone, so i NEED to get messages. I've tried several others and always come back to PhoneAlarm. Just my 2 cents...
phoneAlarm.

how to make these few changes??

They all have to do with text messaging, the people screen and touch flow tabs.
1) I have added a custom ringer for text messages and with my old phone you can stop the sound by either opening the txt or pushing a button. It doesn't work with this phone. Can I fix that or do I need to dramatically shorten my custom sound?
2) When on the phone and I receive a txt message instead of a beep letting me know I have one I'll hear the entire alert sound in the ear piece while trying to talk to my client. Not very easy to do.
3) Can I stop the incoming txt from showing a preview while on the home screen?
4) This is a change I hope I can make regarding the 15 favorites on the people screen in the contact list. Instead of seeing a pile of contacts one on top of another can I change the layout where the icons are side by side in rows so I can just tap one instead of scrolling through them all?
5) Finally can I change the icon order on the touch flow bar? I'd rather have programs and web button after the txt and email button. Any way to do that?
Sooo many questions...
1. Use a short alert for text messages... you'll probably notice all the pre-installed alerts are short - there's a good reason for this!
2. See above.
3. Install HD Manila from the 'Themes, applications & software' forum and uncheck the 'Messages' tab.
4. Scrap TF3D altogether and use spb Mobile Shell instead!
5. See point 3 above and re-order the tabs any way you like!
... sorry for the blunt answers, but you'll get a much better response from people if you ask one question at a time in the relevant section, rather than reeling off a load of stuff all in one post. Answering stuff is very time consuming.
SEARCH is your best friend!
1) If you press the call end key it will stop the ring tone (i think this is rom specific tho) but it will minimize any app your in so if quite annoying. From a phone so good, you wouldnt expect **** like this.
2) I have found no way up to now.
3) Stop preview - do you mean where it comes up with a white box showing some of the text? If so, turn that off by going Settings >> Personal >> Sounds & Notifications >> Notifications >> in the event, select 'Messaging: New text message and uncheck 'Display message on screen'
4) Cant help you there im afraid
5) An application called Advanced Config can do that, if not, installing HD manila will give you the ability to do so. (use advanced config if you dont wanna be messing with TF3D)

[Q] Put Folder of Contact Shortcuts on Launch Bar

Apart from the prefix "Can I", or even "how do I" if I can, it's all in the heading really.
On my phone I have a screen of contact shortcuts, usually two per contact - ring mobile, send SMS. Some get ring work as well. Having a small family and few friends, one screen is enough.
I would like to bundle all of the shortcuts into one folder on the launch bar, but it seems that apps are the only things I can put on the launch bar and then stack into folders.
Or am I missing something?
I have seen the "People" app, but that allows only one entry and default action per favourite person.
Any help appreciated.

[Q] Does anybody know of an app that opens small windows like Halo?

but can be launched from the notification bar instead of halo?
i find it much harder to locate the notification i want via halo, but rather enjoy the opening the small windows on top of whatever is running at the moment.
i'd much prefer to just flip up the notification bar and select particular notifications in which i would like to briefly interact with.
thanks.

[Q] Pop-up notifications?

Pop-up notifications weren't mentioned in the google announcement, but were in a release from sony
Have you seen this? I assume Keep would be a good test case for this.
If you want to post a pic or video, that would be appreciated, too.
Thanks
You get a small area across the bottom with a pop up notification (imagine the blank spot on the 360 but it is instead a notification) that remains until you... Swipe down to remove it which will not dismiss it as you can swipe up later to view any notifications which have not been dismissed. When you do choose to view a notification you can swipe up on the notification to view one full screen of it. You can then tap on the full screen notification to get a full scrollable email, text, etc. which can be interacted with further depending on the individual notification type. You might for instance want to voice in a response to a text or email which google now handles well as long as the response is short.
An interesting thing about google wear and the Urbane in general is that I have not found a definitive guide on how to interact with the watch in detail making sorting out what can be done with various notification types a trial and error task.

Thanks, but it sounds like you're describing regular notifications, which will vibrate, but do not appear on the face while an app is running. Sony's description sounds like a new notification will appear over any app that's running, so you don't have to exit the app to see it. Are you seeing them while using an app?

You're correct, I had thought you were talking about ordinary notifications. I've yet to use any apps on the watch, maybe someone else will chime in.
No, the urbane does not have notification pop up while an app is open on ur watch.
