[Q] About battery life test and reality... - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have seen before those result and now I ask myself that is my n7000 can 12 hours 47 minutes screen on really???
Today, my phone screen on time is 2 hours and battery 25%. How can the testers do that, even with 3g???

Battery life varies tremendously between ROMs, settings, apps installed and running, and usage profiles. Don't take these comparisons so seriously. Anyway, 12 hours of screen on seems a bit exagerated to me. If you feel your battery is draining fast, check:
1) Is your ROM and kernel a battery drainer? Check the forums.
2) Install an app like Better Battery Stats and check if your phone is going to deep sleep, and if there are too many kernel wakelocks. It could indicate a kernel bug (old ROMs) or a misbehaved app.
3) Install an app like Juice Defender to save some battery, reduce the brightness to minimum etc.

2 to 4 hours of screen on time is more common, but 12 hours is too much for note.
Maybe it is standby time?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app

I think so

12hr 3G talk time .. hahah .. that is a joke ... did not happen to me a single time through all my cycles of of ROM's since its purchase.
3 - 4 hrs continuous 3G talk time and your phone battery icon is just about to turn Red

you can get a very long screen on time if you set a pureblack picture and have all radios off lol

Odp: [Q] About battery life test and reality...
The longest screen on time I've had was during battery comparison - 7:40 of continuous video playback with minimal brightness and in plane mode. I guess it could get a,bit better for book reading or some similar low-current activity.

Battery Drains during Standby Mode

Does anybody experience a 3% to 5% battery drain just a few minutes after charging the battery to 100%? It has already reached 100% so I already unplugged it from the charger, but then I noticed after a few minutes, it went down to 97% already, and then in 10 minutes, it's already down to 96%. In 3 hours, it's down to 84%; in 7 hours, it's down to 38% and that's just on standby mode with Wifi/Bluetooth OFF, 3G OFF, GSM only. I've been experiencing this problem for the past few days now. I've already conditioned my battery, charging it to a full charge (100%) after draining the battery until it shuts the phone off. I only charge the battery while the phone is off and usually it takes about 3 to 4 hours maximum to charge it to 100%.
The longest time it reached was 12 hours (battery unplugged from charger) and that is with light use, such as Wifi is only on for a couple of hours, so basically just 2 hours web browsing and skype, 10-20 text messages and 30 minutes to 1 hour browsing the photo gallery or watching videos. No phone calls and 3G is off. The rest of the day, the phone is just on standby mode. I only have at most 10 widgets on the home screen. I have Avast Antivirus running in the background.
I am currently using Easy Battery Saver, Easy Task Killer, GO Task Manager and Battery Monitor Widget. I've uninstalled Juice Defender since I don't think it helps that much when it comes to the battery drain. Currently, the power saving option (available on Note) is enabled at 50%.

Any feedback or comment on this matter would be really much appreciated. Thanks!
From a personal standpoint. Your screenshots shows that your phone had never ever done a deep sleep at all. the 'Awake' mode is continously consistent as well. I guess the probable reason for that is you've installed ''Avast AV" on your phone. It's always running in the background (whenever the phone is ON). From my experiences, Any background application running would always cause wakelocks and the phone would never enter into deep sleep at all.
How bout you try uninstalling some of the background apps your using esp. Avast AV and give it a day to observe if your still having that battery drain issue. (Don't forget after uninstalling or removing those apps, try to wipe dalvik cache and battery stat and restart your phone after.)
and Oh by the way, I am using Juice Defender and contrary to your saying it doesn't help.. IT DOES HELP save battery as I my Note is able to reach 1.5- 2 days of normal use.
Cheers!
Yeah and download betterbatterystats and do some searching on it. With it you can discover what is causing those wakelocks. Search the web for more info on your wakelocks.

I'm using avast and never seen a drain like that. Only time I have is because of background processing. First thing I would do is turn off Background Data
Then as others have said - check batterystats to see where wakelocks are
Plus a rooted phone is a good thing. Titanium backup allowed me to freeze wi-fi sharing which also made a big difference
Finally - clear all caches from Applications menu and reboot

Only picture that shows that is the one with 1 minute 56 sec discharging time, so it was taken shortly after taking charger out. No suprise of it being almost 100% screen on time there if its only 2 minutes
Also installing "cpu spy" will give the cumulative time that your cpu spent at each frequency including deep sleep , mine is showing 88%
John.
Anti virus app is battery hog, I had avast before too, and I uninstalled it after 2 days using. Also that Juice defender, from my test before, it use up more battery than it saved. turning on and off those 3G/Wifi thing is using up alot of battery. and you know what? even the betterbatterystats use up alot, at least to me, becoz it scan what is up frequently.
Hello! Thank you all so much for your response. I've installed both BetterBatteryStats and CPU Spy and here are the results (please see attachments). Upon checking CPU Spy, it shows there that phone did went to deep sleep, maybe? I'm not quite sure, but it shows on the screenshot that it went to deep sleep for 19%. So does that mean the phone really went to sleep?? I'm sorry to ask this question, since I've never really encountered this problem before with my previous Samsung Wave phone, how will you know that your phone went straight to deep sleep mode?
Also, after 46 minutes or so, the battery went down to 96% already after charging it. The battery drain was already 4% in less than an hour.
@letters_to_cleo: I have not uninstalled Avast yet, since I'm still hesitant to use my phone without an AV. But I will try your suggestion for 1 day and see if there's any battery improvement.
I'm looking forward to your response or suggestions. Thanks again!
i am having problem too with new battery original samsung ( made in japan, finished in korea) previously i use samsung battery made in china, finished in korea. charged it over night with power off. it only last 13hrs. my wife phone can last 30hrs.
i've used batterymix to check the battery usage graph, the usage graph drop very fast compare to my wife phone. i'll post some screen capture of the graphs.
another issue is i used once wifi sharing. after turning switching the wifi sharing off, the wifi sharing service always at the background even after many reboot. how to turn that off??
You might need a new battery. Any rechargeable battery has a finite charging cycle. Just a suggestion.
Hi, all! I just noticed that the battery drains still even during deep sleep mode. After 3 hours or so (during sleep mode according to CPU Spy), the battery went down to 92%. It drains even faster when the phone is in use, especially when Wifi and Bluetooth are on, maybe 2-5% drain in 1 hour.
Maybe there's something wrong with the battery?? It's still a new battery and I can see some improvement each day though, but that's because I use it less each day. Before the battery can only last for 8-10 hours, then it increased to 12 hours, and then to 16-17 hours. BetterBatteryStats' current estimate to empty is 24 hours as of today, but that's because I only used the phone today for only a couple of hours, with 20 minutes Wifi and Bluetooth ON and most of the time, it's on deep sleep mode according to CPU Spy.
What do I do with the results from the Partial Wakelocks? Do I have to disable those apps?? The Kernel Wakelocks didn't show any reference apps running. The screenshots for the Partial and Kernel Wakelocks that were taken a few hours earlier still show the same results after 3 hours.

That would be really bad luck. I got my Note via preorder in Germany at the first day it was sold and since then I charged it everyday, sometimes even twice and there is no difference to the first day. If I get told by Samsung after 6month of normal usage the battery is dead that would be the last Samsung device I bought and I use a lot of Samsung stuff.
@ebichan24
Your last screenshots show between 9:35 and 13:35 5% of battery drain. That's not really a good value but ways lower than before. Did you delete some Apps or what did you change?
And since when occurred this issue? Did you install new Apps before this happened?
On my Note I had this issue sometimes without any changes but it was gone after a reboot.
Gesendet von meinem ARCHOS 101G9 mit Tapatalk 2
Agreed with Kanalcommander.... try a reboot in the first instance.
Others have also noted that it takes a few refresh cycles before the phone more accurately reports battery use. Perhaps what you are reporting is because the phone and battery are new (new ROM or Kernel loaded?)
What I have done in the past is to reboot into CWM recovery then clear the battery stats (in the Advanced menu option) Recharge the battery to 100% until it says to remove charger and then use normally until battery down to around 20%, then recharge the battery to 100% again. Do this over a few days and that may help.
thanks, it is new battery two days old.

I was having similar problems with my new note and finishing full charge in 12 hrs but fixed some things and my last charge gave me 2d6hr seriously..few things i did were stop using live wallpapers! Get badass battery to thoroughly monitor stats and then use zdbox to extend life even much eg. I put phone to auto flymode using that app when its sleeping time rest i am more than satisfied even if on GB LC1 fw..waiting for official premium suite for ics since i recently upgraded from sgs2 using ics i miss that smoothness and much better bat life.. Let me know if can be helpful.. Good luck

@TempusFudgeIt
That's what I'm currently doing right now, well, actually, what I do is I discharge the battery until it reaches 0% and turns the phone off. And then I charge the phone for 3 hours while it's switched off, I turn it back on again to check if the battery is fully charged and then I unplug it from the charger.
@Kanalcommander
**Did you delete some Apps or what did you change?
I haven't deleted any apps yet since I don't know which app/s to delete. Most of the apps I downloaded in Note were the same apps that I used in my iPhone4 and Samsung phone before.
**And since when occurred this issue?
This issue occurred since the first day I bought the phone, which was a couple of weeks ago. How long does it take to condition a new battery and new phone?? I'm sorry if I have to ask this question, it's just because I never really experienced this problem with my previous smartphones.
**Did you install new Apps before this happened? On my Note I had this issue sometimes without any changes but it was gone after a reboot.
I only installed recently CPU Spy and BetterBatteryStats and that's it. The drain of 5% from 9:35 to 13:35, the phone's just on deep sleep mode. And then from 13:35 to 23:44, it went from 92% to 74% while the phone is on deep sleep mode at 90% according to CPU Spy. That's 18% battery drain. It's just an unacceptable number for me. I tried rebooting the phone already, but every time I do so, just a few minutes after I turned the phone ON, there's already a 1% drain in the battery.
Also, does the battery really drain faster when the Wifi is ON? I've read in other threads that there might be some problem with the recent OS update that Samsung needs to address. Is this true?? Because as you can see on the screenshot below, the battery was still at 74% by 23:44 and then after I turned ON the Wifi and used it until 01:26, the battery went down to 54%. That's already a 20% battery drain in just less than 2 hours. I was only browsing through the Android Store and Skype.
Calibrate your battery in case you flashed any roms and for first usage I got my battery to 0% 3 times then everything is running great for example its at 47% now its 22 now and I have had it off charge since 7 morning..... i have wifi gps and 3g always on and use music player bluetooth and made some calls

My battery (also only a week old) drains quickly too. Can anyone tell me if widgets draw a lot of current? And then is it only the ones on the visible screen or do all widgets draw juice all the time?
I will ask such thing, did you guys check the battery expiration day ? Mostly sibce you got your phone almost a yeae after it was announced you nay get a bad battery, as for widgets the ones that are always active and asking for informatiom. Like location or weather over the internet yes they do eat your battery kinda fast.

Recurring battery drain? - Caused by memory of using app to drain battery?
Hello!
I used a battery drain app when charge left was 30% to accelerate drain to "die out" stage. After I completed the calibration process for unrooted phone as suggested in various sites (charge fully, switch off and charge etc.) I started using it from a 100% stage.
This afternoon when the battery showed 30% I saw in BMW the current flow was in -10ma to -15ma and it started spiking to hundreds. There was no change in settings or usage. From the 30% level it dropped to 10% in an hour and I had to charge again.
Was puzzled why the battery which was dropping around 0.5%/hour in standby earlier to the 30% level suddenly went down hill. My first guess was it was possible some file in the system remembered the previous usage history and replayed it out.
Any suggestions? Anyone faced this before? Everyone says LiOn batteries dont have memory so if anything it has to be the phone.
Thanks!

[Q] What is acceptable 'up time' for the Note?

I've had the Note through GB, ICS Stunner and now official ICS rom....
Stunner was definitely better for battery than the official ICS rom.
I unplug my phone at 6.30am and put it to charge every night around midnight, with battery usually nagging me to charge it - about 10% or so...
My question is that normal? I use my phone normally, the odd facebook and twitter time, a bit of note taking, internet etc...
is 17/18 hours as good as it's going to get?!
yes 18 hours is good, consider the size of the screen etc and how you use it
Mine dies in 9 hours with Wi-Fi on and Auto Sync on. Is that normal?

I would say yes. WI-Fi on means constant power consumption. Auto Sync on means even more power consumption. Wy do you leave them on? You can synch when you need to and switch Wi-Fi on when it's necessary.

Mine is always on wifi and last about 2 days... ^^''
Stunner averages at 16-17 hours, and most people get 17-18 hours if you look at the stunner thread. The best battery life was on stock GB though, 40+ hours for me (light use)
I would think so too with GB...thats what I'm currently running. =)
Measuring total uptime (from charge to charge) doesn't make much sense IMO,
because we all have different usage habits.
Screen on time, however, is a different story.
Anything less than 4 hours of screen on time is bad in my book.
I'm running the german ICS now and after a few tweaks (autokiller) .. i get 2 days of power :d thats with wifi off at work and at Night .. an hour of playing games.. half an hour of voice Calls and some music listening + web browsing. I'm a happy man
@chasmodo: i do listen to music lots with the screen off so screentime is not an absolute measurement of usage either ...
Cpu states However is a very good representation of usage .. minutes 1400mhz..200mhz..Deep sleep ...

Im using LPY rom and for me thet battery time has actually improved compared to official GB. I keep wifi on 24/7 and 2g mode / powers saving, gps off, so on avarage use of around 8h daily, i get more than 24h in one charge.
Yeah since I've done the flight mode and battery pull my up time is amazing! Been on 9 hours now and lost 30% of charge. Very happy with it..

17 hrs so far and battery at 65%. Auto sync, wifi, gps, BT on. Too lazy to turn that stuff off.
Nothing special just stock ICS.
i can only get 16-20h tops... with texting, some calls, gaming and wifi :/ but i've only made 4 charges to the battery yet, so hope that life time will grow up.
using it for about 10h now, and bat @ 55% runing 4.0.3 german ICS
I get more than a day with moderate use. Lots of wifi, FB, a bit of browsing and gaming, some music, a lot of texting and whatsapp, a few calls and just playing around scrolling between homescreens and stuff. Pretty good to me!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
I find I get on average 16-20 hrs with good use. It really depends on the screen on time as it sucks up most of the power. White especially uses up the most power on these screens. When I check battery stats I usually average about 3-4 hours of screen on time and most of that is web browsing and checking email. Your mileage may vary if you've got background processes
At idle, I lose about 1% per hour (sometimes less if i disable wifi/data/gps/sync). So theoretically I could get over 4 days in idle. With the display on constantly I would guess it would use 15-20% per hour. If you're playing a cpu intensive 3d game you can probably double that or more!
I found cpuspy really helpful in diagnosing battery issues. I was suffering from the deep sleep problem when I moved to ICS LPY (the sounds off/airplane mode/reboot fixed it). The cpu never went to sleep so was eating up at least 5-8% per hour. It might not sound much but if I forgot to recharge the phone at night I would end up with a dead phone in the morning!

[Q] Battery Life on Xperia Z. Sucks.

Folks,
Can anyone suggest how much battery life they are getting on their device. Not sure it is a common problem or my device is defective.
It stays on for only 3 to 4 hours and dies, i.e. just a couple of messages and emails (albeit on 100% brightness and NOT on Stamina mode). Is it normal. Brightness to be kept on auto?
If I play video or so, battery goes from 100 to 10% in about 1 hour maximum.
Have juice defender installed. Also a task killer (which kills the background ones and they restart on their own). But not so much help though.
Any suggestions?

Get rid of juice defender, reduce brightness to 75% on usual daily use, and you should get around 4 to 5 hours screen on time, and up to 24 hours standby time.

Xperia z is either having a software or hardware problem
I use a note 10.1 for two months and did gaming all the time with 3g on but it lasted for two days without charging. But the Z cant even handle 15 minutes of gaming. It goes down from 71% to 62% IN 15 MINUTES. I expected the update would fix the problem. But I dont see any difference. I was so curious with the Z. But I doubt that now. Is the fate of Sony going to be that of like Toyota.

On 100% brightness I wouldn't expect much more.
From experience I set my screen brightness to about 25%, which is more than enough for normal use indoors. If I need to use the phone outdoors or in sunlight I'll put the brightness up but it always goes back to 25% when I'm indoors again.
The only sync I have on mine is my Google account, everything else is set to manually refresh only.
On my 3rd day of owning the phone I had 24h+ of use from it, and that's still improving. My battery is on about 60% at the moment after 18 hours. If I turn on Stamina Mode it predicts another 2 days!
However, if I was watching videos at 100% screen brightness, I wouldn't expect much more than an hour or two. Horses for courses.
Not Normal

Your situation is not normal. Maybe the battery life on the Xperia Z sucks. Maybe it's all about managing your apps and stuff - but no. Not that much. Playing video shouldn't drain the battery 90% in an hour. I play streaming video over WiFi for 2 hours a day (boring train ride) and leave WiFi on and Stamina mode off all day. Maybe when I get home at the end of the day the battery is at like 30% and maybe I don't play with the phone much once I get to work - but video kills the battery in an hour? Not if it's hardware accelerated video.
I al sure some people will say "See what is running in the background", but I am not sure you would be able to drain your battery that fast even running like @home stuff.
After a few charge and when the battery is season it will be okay

Please rate your screen on time to the nearest half hour.
If you respond to the poll, please reply as well so more can see it.
If you have abnormally hi/low times please post your thoughts on why.
I'm going to take this chance to recommend you use Firefox instead of Chrome for internet browsing. Not sure why but Chrome just uses a lot of power. I frequently see 30% ratings on the battery usage stats screen.
Switching to Firefox and unless I go above 6 or so tabs I'm almost always ~half Chrome's power usage. So, 15-20% max usually.
conclusion:
75% of users get >3.5h screen on time.
3.5 hours with Dalvik.
Switched to ART Saturday night and first day on Sunday and again today was pushing 4 hours SOT, so a slight improvement. Have to wait and see if it improves over time as I have not had any FC's with any of the apps I use so I'll keep running ART to see if that helps.
Google Now is on, screen set at 10% (auto way too aggressive), Location set to Mode - Battery Saving (I know if I switched to Device Only that could help, but then Google Now location based cards don't work) so leaving it on for now.
This is pretty hard to reply on just because I never let my phone get down to 1% to have a gauge of SOT. Do I partake in the poll if I'm at 40% at the end of my day with 2h54min SOT?

While I'm curious where this goes I urge ppl. not to take results as reference as user patterns differ wildly. Syncing, Now!, BT, data on/off, 2G or 3G or LTE, GPS or network location, apps, brightness, sleep time all can make a difference in SoT.
I noticed that I'm getting more battery drain when I set location to battery saving mode. I noticed when I was on battery saving mode that it was causing Google services to run much longer.
I have all connections on. Bluetooth, push services, exact location, location reporting, Google now, screen brightness on auto. I get roughly 3-4 hrs of SOT.

I Always have LTE off unless i'm tethering, HSPA+ is fast enough for phone use. Screen is always below 50%, google now off, location at battery saving. all sync is set to off/manual. wifi/bt almost always on. I do about 1.5 hours of a2dp streaming per day.
With all of those conditions I have seen 4-4.5 hours over a 2 day discharge cycle. I could probably get another hour if I used my phone over the course of 1 day instead of 2.
3.5 hours average per day/charge with an hour of games. 4.5 hours with no games.
Wifi+Data, 30% brightness Google Now on, most Google sync off, GPS: battery saving.
5.5-6.5 hours on mobile moderate use and every sensor on. Only change is manual 25-30% brightness. This phone is multiples brighter than anything I've used. If it had lower minimums I would keep in on auto. The n7 is the same way.

Lux is quite good at managing auto brightness, you can set a lower average. Not sure if it's compatible with 4.4 just yet.

These results are pretty encouraging imo. I'll be coming from an HTC Rezound that usually gets around 2 hrs of SOT, so it looks like this will most likely be an improvement according to the poll. I'd love an extra hour to an hour and a half of SOT compared to what I usually get
Consider this a bump I guess, since I can't actually vote yet. Just getting more and more excited cause I just got my shipping notification today.

put your wife to sleep
wifi, advanced options, keep wi-fi on during sleep, and select never
ever since i have done this, i am doing a bit better on the battery front
also, went to dark wallpaper. that helped a bit to.
First, before taking any actions you should install a battery monitoring app and one for data monitoring.
After several days, analyze them to see if there is any app working and transferring data constantly around the clock.
Also, try to reduce the number of apps working (or updating) in background. For example email fetching (switch it to manually instead of auto fetching every x minutes).
I used gsam battery monitor but nothing seems to drain my battery. I could barely reach 2 or 3 hours screen on time

Then take it to a repair shop and replace the battery.
