[Q] Cases and sizing? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all!
So I have a KF2 and am using what is basically this case
http://www.targus.com/us/productdet...l1=&cp=&bannertxt=Cases for Tablet & e-Reader
Now, I like it, but the one I got said it was for generic 7" e-readers. Now, what I wanted was basically a book-style case but I often find myself at home removing the case because I want to grip the solid edge. With the case it's pretty much holding onto the back part of the case because the tablet sits in the middle, instead of flush to the edge.
So, firstly, is the KF2 the exact dimensions of the original KF or the KFHD?
Secondarily, do you guys know of any specific cases for the device that sit as flush to the edges as possible? Doesn't even necessarily have to be a book style case, and having a stand is nice, but not required. I just want a case that protects the screen and whatnot when it's in my bag, and to actually let me hold the edges.
Thanks!

There's a whole accessories forum that would possibly be of more help.

Okay I'll post there when I get home. Does anyone know about the dimensions though? That way i could look for cases for the earlier device too which would be nice and improve the selection

[Q] E-reader case for the Tab

I cant find any cases for the tab on sale in Moscow, and i really need at least some protection in the time they take to get to market here.
So i was thinking an ereader case. Which ereaders are about the same size as the Tab?
Preferably i would like a case that uses rail clips rather than the kind with a sticker...
I ordered this one from ebay. search around for an amazon kindle bag and it shoud fit.
Kindle - 7.5" x 4.8" x 0.335"
Tab - 7.4 x 4.68 x 0.46

I appreciate that people have different tastes and needs, but I just don't see the appeal of adding big heavy layers of leather on a device that is so perfectly shape for mobile use? For example, using the rear-facing camera with a book-like flap involves some kind of gymnastic. Conversely, a silicon skin offers adequate protection on the move, and a neoprene pouch provides additional padding for storage. Don't get me started on screen protectors! (just teasing)

a) thats a bag and im looking for a ereader case and
b) if i could get a galaxy-specific case, i would be asking this question...

I must have misunderstood what you are looking for exactly. The cases I've seen for ereaders like the kindle are much like what I posted.
I have to say only a plonker would have a separate shoulder bag to carry around a kindle. Or a hippie pensioner... no offence - its just silly.
I'm looking for a case.

Nook case for Streak 7

I am currently using Jack Spade case however, a lot of Nook (not Color) case fit streak pretty nice. a modification may be required but I am using without any modification because I am not using the main camera.
Especially the power is cover and the bottom touch keys are bit cover but if you get used to fiddle around here and there you can really use these nice cases. Most of designer nook cases are on sale also!!! so go down to your close by B&N and try them out.
*WARNING
Do NOT compare NOOK Color its screen. It will just give you big disappointment. Just happy w/ the case selection.
This will really is a good alternative
1. if you don't use the main too often.
2. if you like fancy cases like me.
3. if you don't mind taking the device out of its case time to time like me(which is super easy because i'm only using one side of elastic band

there are few other case with that vice on it. it's not perfect but they fit like their 2nd marriage.
You know what?? this is pretty usefull info... i couldn't find a decent case...
P.S: I think archos 7 Internet Tablet cases are a go too... ordered a A7 leather sleeve and will report later...
Nook Case fits DS7
i bought a nook case (not nook color case) and it fits dell perfectly fine. I can even fit the DS7 in such a way that to charge the ds7 i don't have to remove it. ie exposing the charging slot outward.

I will do that after I go home. The older nook case was selling 50% off at BN store. i paid 15.34 for it.

place the DS7 in such a way that power button will be at top left corner. That will place charging slot facing ouside and head phone at the bottom. I think the headphone jack is 90% visible but I don't use headjack.

Flygrip + Nexus 7?

IMHO pricey, but innovative.
I am not sure if it still applies, but thanks to QBKING77, you can use his handle as a coupon code to get free shipping.

I saw this in the SGS3 threads and wondered it it would work on the N7. The have it in 3 different sizes, but that's for finger fitment and the slide/video shows it installed on some ereader.
Would it stick to the N7's backing?
EDIT: It should according to their video, thanks goes to Rock-&-Roll-Hedgehog for linking us this video;
It would be useful if they stated on their website how much weight it can handle. Apologies if that info was in the 2nd video but that fellow was annoying me with his hand waving so much I had to stop watching. This product looks really interesting though.
I think it would work but I never got one for my handsets due to the bulk
I just found this video review which shows it being used on a Kindle and also on a TPU case on an Amazon Fire Tablet, which I think is about the same size & weight as a Nexus 7.
Tablet shown from 2.00 onwards
Edit: Yay I got it to embed. Yeah I know, but I'm pleased with myself so there.

Very good example, Thanks!
Looks interesting. Like a clothespin for your fingers. :good:
It looks interesting but I doubt a bit that it will stay on the back of a Nexus 7 because of it's material and kind of surface. It might also make it hard to fit in a pocket with this extra thing attached to it.

Perhaps attached to these new hard snap on covers it would hold; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29640491
I wrote to Flygrip about using it on the Nexus 7. Here are selected highlights from the response.
In that video we showed the kindle fire which is almost the exact size (and actually heavier than the nexus 7). It will work exactly the same. Once we get out hands on a nexus 7, I will do a video.
<snip>
The nexus 7 will work just as well using the flygrip as the fire does.
<snip>
From my experience (I have it on the [Kindle] fire):
1. Great for reading and flicking through pages
2. You will not be able to totally one-hand navigate the entire screen. Too big to reach top left and bottom left with your thumb, but will let you click on at least 1/3 of the screen with your thumb with same hand.
3. When laying in bed, you will be able to view it even though gravity is going against you. You can do this for a while until your hand/wrist will get tired because the weight of the tablet starts to fatigue your arm.
4. My dad uses it on his regular kindle for reading books and loves it (as well as many other flygrip owners).. Just takes pressure off your finger muscles to grab the kindle.
<snip>
Regarding the sizes. check out video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k-30qPeZFY
For tablets I recommend getting a large because sometimes you may want to stick your fingers in even more than normal (smartphone we recommend fingertips)
Overall on tablets, it does help out a lot.
<snip>
When we were at CTIA Wireless and Macworld Expo, we had a kindle and ipad and using it all day with one hand to hold it (when people were purchasing flygrips, we used the square card readers on the ipad, so the flygrip rep would hold it out for them to sign). Definitely helps for that purpose as well.

That's not bad, but they are comparing it in size and weight to the KFire. Problem with that is that the KFire has a straight plastic back, adhesive should work fine with that, but the N7 is textured (holely) rubberish backing. I would assume most adhesives would eventually un-stick and peel off.
I would recommend if getting one of these, to put it on a hard plastic casing. But really that's just my guess. I'd be afraid of it coming off and flipping the N7 in the air on to the floor. The glass is not Gorilla, it's just Corning scratch resistant and even if that doesn't get damaged, the LCD will definitively crack.. (been there)

[REVIEW] Caseen DESIGNO Nexus 7 Case

Hello. First of all, this is my first post to XDA, so a little introduction:
I'm Neal and I live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. By day, I am an IT contractor for the Federal Government.
I ordered my Nexus 7 on Day #1 from the Play Store and I received it in mid-July. My only other tablet experience was an HP TouchPad which I got from the Fire Sale. I say "was" because I sold it to get the ca$h for the Nexus 7. I don't regret my decision at all! I was dual booting webOS and CyanogenMod and I ended up using the CyanogenMod side more than the webOS side.
Below is a review I wrote for the Caseen DESIGNO case for the Nexus 7. I originally wrote this review in mid-August. I will post an update to the review at the end:
When I pre-ordered my Nexus7 and saw the OEM case, I must admit that I hesitated at first. I wasn't really sure that that case was worth $20, but I wanted something to protect the N7 right away. I wasn't sure when other N7 cases would come to market, so I purchased the OEM case.
The OEM case was not the solution for me. I'm not going to go into details; there are other threads on this matter.
I was attracted to the Caseen case because I wanted something of good quality and not some eBay/Amazon China mass-produced item. Yes, the Caseen is made in China, but it doesn’t look like it was rushed out. The Caseen looks like thought and care went into the design of the case.
I’ve had my Caseen for a little over a week. I really enjoy using it as opposed to the OEM case. I feel that the N7 has more protection. When I still had the OEM case, I went away on vacation and I was afraid of packing it in the suitcase. With the Caseen, I feel more comfortable putting it in a backpack or Messenger Bag.
The case is constructed of genuine leather. The inside is soft and will not damage the screen. All the ports, including the “Sleep/Wake” and “Volume” buttons are easily accessed and easy to press the buttons. Speaking of “Sleep/Wake,” the cover does contain a magnet which will activate the “auto Sleep/Wake” function of the tablet. The magnet will keep the cover in the closed position when not in use.
The cover does have a hand strap, so when you open the cover and bend it over behind the tablet, you can place use the hand strap to hold the tablet in the “portrait” position.
The case has holes on the back along the speaker area to allow the sound to come through. I have looked at other $30 - $40 cases and these cases do not have an area for the speaker. I haven’t tested these other cases, so I do not know how this affects the sound.
The Caseen DESIGNO also has an elastic loop to keep your stylus and the cover does convert into a stand so that you can place the N7 in “Landscape Mode” for both viewing and typing. I have found issues with both the elastic loop and also with using the “stand mode.” I have outlined these issues in the accompanying YouTube video - Sorry, I can't post the video since I'm new. If you want to see the video, just PM me.
The other issue I am running into with the case is that it is difficult to swipe down from the top in order to open the Notification Area. This is also demonstrated in the YouTube video. In addition to swiping for the Notification Area, I do find it difficult to access the “back, home, and recent apps” soft buttons when using the N7 in Landscape.
Overall, I do like the Caseen DESIGNO and would recommend it to anyone looking for a case for their Nexus 7. Considering that I am on the East Coast and Caseen is in California, they respond quickly to e-mail.
** UPDATE **
Caseen has come out with a "Version 2" of the DESIGNO case. Basically, the Version 2 has some cutouts on the left and right side of the case to allow for swiping. For example: You can swipe between open tabs on Chrome by swiping left to right or right to left. The case still makes it very difficult to swipe from the top an open the Notification Area. I think Caseen needs to take this into account for future updates.
I hope that you enjoyed my review.
Thank you,
Neal

Yes, it looks very similar to many cases I've seen, including the SupCase.
Thanks for the review Neal!
Anyway, here is a video featuring the case:
Hope that helps. For those wondering, the MoKo/Blurex/SupCase are all very cases for the money. However, our case is different and is blueprinted here before being sent out. If you google caseen reviews you'll see we have definite quality differences.

Poetic Slimline for Nook HD

Just purchased and received the Poetic Slimline case for the Nook HD. Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Poetic-SLIMLI...804667&sr=8-2&keywords=nook+hd+7"+poetic+case
Currently the case is just $6.95 with free shipping. Current as of 2/13/2013
The case has has a plastic base that clips on over the body of the Nook HD. This helps to make the fit very snug while adding very little to the depth of the device. There are cut outs for the volume rocker, headphone jack and for the power button. The bottom of the case is left mostly open for access to the micro sdcard, proprietary port and the LED light hole. There are also two holes for the speakers on the back.
The plastic case is covered with a faux leather type material. This allows for a relatively tacky area so the device will not slip out of your hand. This material also covers the front of the device protecting the screen of the Nook HD. On the inside of the front cover is a soft velvet like material that is nice and soft preventing scratches on the screen. The front cover can also be tri-folded behind the device to act as a stand for the tablet. This occurs in landscape mode allowing for a decent angle to watch movies or other videos. It does not provide any support in the portrait mode though so it will not help with reading books.
The front cover clicks in to place with the back plastic via magnets. This helps to secure the cover so that it does not flop open. It also provides for a way to turn your Nook HD on and off when opening or closing the case. This is a great feature that will actually bypass the normal lock screen so that when you finish opening the case your device is on and ready to go. However, if you enable the password lock screen then you will still need to unlock and then type in your code.
This case comes with a 3 year warranty from Poetic which is very unusual for cases but is a great feature to have.
One con I found in this device after its arrival was that there were some threads coming out from between the two material types on the front cover of the case. This were easily clipped to make things look better but it does take away from the idea of the case being of top quality. My only other concern is how well the materials will hold up while using the front cover as a stand. If used very frequently it could lead to cracking of the front cover. However, I will only be able to tell that over time and not for the day that I have had the case so far.
So far I am very impressed with the Poetic Slimline case for the Nook HD. I recommend anyone looking for a nice slim case to pick one up.
4.5 out of 5 stars.
Some more pictures in post # 4.

This looks great. Exactly what i have been looking for on HD+. this is avilable also for HD+ at $8.95.
Poetic likes to throw out introductory prices and then increase it once it gets popular, so i would order now it you want one, even if it is not available for another 1-2 weeks, for the prices may increase by then.

Did i forgot mention you?!? I know why ... I just dont like any case on mob/tab and etc devices. Only acceptable are film skins which ones give a sense of the real item.
Questions: I had a Poetic portfolio case, had one dumb thing, pen holder on the back surface. Is there one on this? Also, I like to be able to stand it up in portrait mode for reading, but I think this one only stands in landscape, right?
Thanks

There is nothing on the back. So no worries there.
This case is not designed for portrait use. It might stand straight up in portrait but it won't be very stable and there is no way to change the angle.

Far and away the best commercial case I've had for a tablet flavored device. And half the cost of the nearest competitor in the
'decent case' catetory, and that one was for a 5" Samsung media player.
I get the impression that these are from a maker who also makes iPad cases and uses many of the same materials. The front has three
longitudinal strips of material - but the third is narrower than the first two. I'll compare it to a smart cover tomorrow - my memory is
that that cover has three bands of equal-breadth material on the front
The fit in the rear is good as delivered, but may start to loosen up over time, and doesn't have a cutout to match the grommet
in the corner. I may add a cutout (I have a grommet setter for fabric) and then use a shoelace or similar to fasten down the back
on that side. That could also get me a loop for a stylus, which would be useful to me. The fit across the front is a little too
long and a little too wide, which will annoy me over time or I may get used to it.
The cover activates the wake from sleep in CM10. The device sleeps itself after a minute by default, which is fine with me.
All in all, 8 out of 10.

i think i got the last 8.95 one as after i ordered, the price jumped to 12.95. maybe it's back down now, haven't checked.
anyway after about a week of use, i like the case for the price but have some minor quibbles. the case is a bit creased/folded on the edges when it shipped, so it doesn't perfectly conform to the shape of the HD+. maybe over time it will smooth out.
the stand notch is not very solid and i've had it slip when i'm moving around, not sure if that's standard for case stands. also the "hand strap" is kind of hard to pull out, but i mostly use it in landscape mode so not a big deal.
like i said not a big deal especially for the price, but not a perfect case.

Thanks for the tip. Now $15 for the black HD+ one on Amazon. Still a decent price :cyclops:
Anyone has a hint how to order Poetic to a Europe country other than UK at a low price?
I can order at amazon.co.uk for 20GBP + 6GBP shipping (= 40 USD) which seems a bit high compared to 6 GBP price on UK Ebay (but from where I can't get it shipped to Slovenia).
