[Q] Cynogenmod Shuts Down after Installation - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heys Guys Im having an issue with my Captivate, its was working fine for the past week. It started giving me problems like battery temps too high, cant charge, had to charge it manually, removing battery & charging it all night. All this happened when im with stock rom latest with leaked 2.3.5
& i did unlock this with changing the 01 digit to 00 in efs file.
From the past 2 days im trying to install CM10,9, 10.1..... after installation it shuts down itself. Not able to use it.
Is there any way around to make this work. If pics are needed i can provide that too.
Thanks

No reply... :/
Some one should have had an issue.

When/how does it happen?
What are the changes/mods you made?
Did you restore anything?
Did you try different kernel settings?
Did you try flashing a different kernel (like Semaphore?) or flashing a different ROM?
I could be asking more questions but really, I dunno what causes it, I can only guess. Also a search in the CM10.1 thread might give you an answer to your SoD <-- Should've been your first step*

Battery temp to high is a big problem. Did you overcloak? Have you running bunch of stuff at the same time?
When it shuts down, does it reboot by itself or you have to do it manually?
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Sounds like Battery health status does not equal healthy. That forces an immediate shutdown, whether due to temperature or excessive internal resistance. That's because once a Li ion battery reaches critical temperature, it combusts and destroys your phone, burns you and anything around it, etc.
GET ANOTHER BATTERY ASAP.
Stop trying to circumvent high temperature shut down.

Recently i bought a new battery, original samsung make, it states the same thing "charging paused for battery durability" sometimes "Charging stopped battery temps high". No overclocking here, just used to call, receive & wifi hotspot. Currently i charge battery in a battery charger & use it in phone.
U pointed out something right, sometimes screen just goes blank, i have to manually switch it on.

I think it's not CM related but hardware related. Does this happen when not using the wifi hotspot too?
I'm thinking your battery is bad (even if new), charger is bad, connection is bad (maybe from water/humidity) or that your usb port is bad. No easy way of finding it other than testing.

May be yes, the phone some times just goes blank, i have to manually switch ON. The same battery works well in my frnds phone quite well.
Port dont know, i can copy files no errors even now when i plug it in on stock gingerbread the battery doesnt charge but can copy files as before.

Since the batt works well in other phone, a couple of ideas. Perhaps silly to ask, but just checking:
did you wipe battery stats in cwm after flashing?
did you clean the phone's battery terminals with a bit of alcohol?
what's the battery health, temperature and voltage history look like, if you can get it. you can log it with battery monitor widget or similar app. set to short 1 minute interval for testing.

Battery Problem

My phone suddenly just shuts down when I'm using it... not a "powering off" but just out of nowhere turns off
Anyone know what the problem might be?
I've had this same issue before, so I bought a new battery last month and it worked great until just last week...
I've tried resetting the battery stats....nothing....
The battery still fully charges and shows the correct percentage when I plug in the charger to use...
Could it be the ROM or battery issue?
....I'm currently using cannon's rom... 2.2.1
Anyone know how to fix?..... thanks

Well if you have a new battery already. And it shows its good. I think it might be the rom then.

Something to take note, What are you doing when it does this?
-Surfing net on the phone
-Listening to music
-Charging
-Tethering
Keeping in mind that the phone will shut its self down (it should) if your battery starts to over heat. On my Hero the charge light flashes before it shuts down and it gets really hot to the touch. Also at higher heat temps, overall battery life suffers.
my phones shuts down usually when wifi is on and im sirfing or using youtube app or google maps(every time i use wifi for a while this happens...)
it also shuts down rarely on calls and sometimes when im trying to flash a new rom...
it doesnt powers on until i connect it on AC...
I REALLY NEED HELP...
ps:if i change the battery will my problem been solved?

it turns off randomly...even when im just browsing through the home screens... a full charge will last me like 5 minutes max.... no matter what im doing an the battery doesnt overheat at all...
and when i plug it in to the charger, it shows the correct percentage.. well at least an estimate of what it could be (for about 5 min of use before shut down= 95%)
I have the same problem, It is extremely frustrating.
The shutdowns would happen randomly during surfing the net or using google maps. It would shut down out of no where and it would be impossible to turn back without being plugged into a charger since the phone thinks it battery is at 0 even it was just charged to full before the shutdown. I tried to calibrate the battery but it would just shut down while I'm trying to burn through the charge with the screen on. This is the such a nuisance, can't even get through one day.
I am using biffmod 1.8 so I don't know if this is a rom related problem.
I'm havuing the exact same problem. Even with a full battery, the pgone will shut down when I do anything more than a text or two here and there. When I put it on the charger I will still have a significant amount of power left. I've tried doing full wipes and changing roms. I think it might actually be related to the radio. This began after I updated the radio. It would get stck on formatting the cache. I tried going back to the old radio, but the problem has persisted.. and it also got stuck on formatting cache...
I hope someone can help with this bc it pretty much renders the phone useless when it's not being charged. =\
try change the battery...this solve my prob
you could try recalibrating the battery.
let your phone die.
plug it in for so long that you are 100% sure that it is full.
boot to recovery wipe battery stats.
boot normal
use it and let it die.
recharge again until its full BEFORE booting it.
if you sure its full boot normal.
if you follow this cycle some times it should be fine.
Only issue: you have to wait long until its full and you always have to be near an ac
i've tried re-callibration.. guess i will have to get another battery..
i don't think it's the battery though bc others with the same problem said that the problem persisted after getting a new battery.. =\ we'll see.. thanks for the replies.

[SOLVED] Incorrect Battery Values

This seems to be quite a common and somewhat obscure at the same time.
Many people have reported installing a new rom or even just powering up their phone and seeing a battery % much different from what they expect. Most often much lower than it should be. Evidently this corrects itself after some time but it's a real problem if your display reads <15% because you really have to plug it in then, even with you know you have 90% battery!
So, here's the solution after testing it under different circumstances over a few days:
Simply boot your phone when it is not plugged in to a power source and battery % will be accurate.
That simple. Silly LG!
So, if you flash a new rom, unplug the USB cable before you reboot...
Hit 'Thanks' below for the 50 reboots I did to prove this...
hehehe jups allready figured that out on myself tho haha. But indeed that's kinda silly of LG

Sorry to say the same..
Even while charging with the phone shut down, pulling it off the charger and then booting this happens. On my phone I have experienced it on all MCR's.
It's really not a big deal as long as the battery performs as Stock 10b, that build has been stable batterywise on my phone. But staying stock isn't too much fun
Well, every time I charge, whether I reboot/shut down before unplugging or not, my charge always maxes out at 96%.
Annoying and I'd like it sorted if at all possible.
Anyone?..........lol

ye i got that exact same issue i was wondering why that was happening and hoped that a simple reboot would fix it but its a bit more complicated than that i suppose...
also the battery reset in cwm didnt fix the loading till 97% w/e percentage.
when i install the stock rom it allows me to load it till 100% though pretty weird stuff -.-

I had a replacement netbook battery that could only max to 90%. So, over the weekend, I practically drained it to 0% (not a healthy practice for Li-ion batteries but I was desperate). Took out the battery for a while, and then recharged for several hours. Well, it seems to get up to 100% now.
Perhaps you could try using the the phone until it very low on battery before recharging. Maybe the charging process in the phone needs some sort of recalibration. But should not be doing this all the time as it will reduce Li-ion battery longevity.
Let mine totally die last night so it wouldn't even turn on at all. Took out and replaced battery and then charged it overnight and hey-presto, when I unplugged it this morning, it stayed at 100%.
Solved indeed....for me anyway. Feel free to try the same and post your results.

I'll be sure to try your tip man. But not easy drain it completely when I always need the phone :=)
I guys! I've got the same problem.
I think that it could depend on the "full battery popup FIX" that Paul introduced in his roms by the FR8.
So I would like to ask Paul if you can create a patch to remove that fix. Just to try it!
According to me, incorrect battery amount depend on a wrong voltage read error (offset introduced?) by the rom.
In my case, I have followed many times battery wype procedure without positive issue. The matter leaves only by flashing original roms.
I think that if Paul have written a wrong battery values range (to delete the battery full popup) that can be traduced in an incorrect battery status displays.

It was occurring before Paul introduced that change unfortunately...
After I wrote here, I registered a premium account to Paul's from modaco site and toke a custom fr12 rom without "battery full popup remove patch". Now I'm going to sleep and plugin the 2x to charge. Tomorrow I'll write here if is that the solution...

Perhaps, but you can not conclude it was introduced by MCR. You logic is wrong there.
Even without "battery full popup fix" it doesn't work good...
Battery level, when unpluged, stay at 100% for 2 minutes afterwards drop down fast until 85% then drain normally...
I'm getting huge battery display problems no matter what I do.
When I took it off the charger this morning, it said I had 100%... thats fair enough. However it stayed at 100% all day, so to "refresh" it this evening I restarted the phone, and low and behold it now says I have 27% left. But again, it's just sticking at that value, even with me now plugging the phone into the wall to charge. It simply says "Charging (27%)" and won't budge, likely until I restart the phone again.
Sometimes it works fine, it seemed to be doing ok last night before I put it on the charger. Any tips/suggestions? Is this something likely to be fixed when the Gingerbread update rolls around?
This is my first real smartphone, and am fairly annoyed as its giving me a fair few problems that I've not had from other electronic devices.
As I stated in another thread, I had the same issue while on MoDaCo Fr12. However, after reverting back to stock, the battery percentage is spot-on and I'm getting up to 48 hours use out of it.
Draw your own conclusions.

That sounds super, but I'm still on stock too. About the only things of note I've done are root and switching to Launcher Pro. Oh, and Clockwork Mod of course. Perhaps a complete reboot is needed, we'll see how it goes.
Saying that - since charging, my phone has been at 90% all evening, until right this moment when it changed to 89%. It's less than I'd expect on this type of phone for 3-4 hours use (or lack thereof, I've barely touched it), but it's a start eh?
Welcome to the world of smartphones my friend. I've had various handsets over the last 4 years from iphone to android and a day and a half out of the battery is about average......at best. ;-)

Just to clarify, what I meant in my previous post was that I was expecting to battery to drop a lot more than it did. The fact that it only went down 1% in several hours of use prompted me to think that the battery value was messed up.
As it is, I've not charged my phone in the 36 hours since, and it tells me I have 73% battery left. Perhaps it is performing extremely well after all? If that's the case then I'm more than happy with it, but being the pessimist I'm still expecting the phone to turn off sometime with the battery reporting incorrect values.

Battery virtually dropping, hardware or software problem?

Hello,
for months it has been happening that when the battery usually reaches 25% (but not always sometimes even 40ish) the battery indicator drops to 19% and it could either remain stuck at that value until the charge actually drops below 19% and continue the usual drop or it will rapidly drop to lower values in big steps like (19->10->4) in minutes to finally actually automatically power off. The strange thing is that it's all fake! When I power the phone again the % will go back to where it should be before this virtual drop happened and continue its usual drop, it always worked until today when for the first time it continued the "game" non-stop until the battery ended the actual charge (for hours)! You have to consider that i was in a place in the mountains where the gsm coverage was very low/non existent so it could be connected. But it got me worried because it couldn't control it!
Apart from a solution I'm asking also what the reason could be. It could seem like a battery problem but why would the phone actually recognize the actual charge after it powers off and I restart it ? Seems like a software problem (battery driver maybe?). But I wouldn't exclude that it could be the battery maybe when the charge gets low the voltage drops dramatically under stress to a point where the phone thinks its almost empty.
I'm using cm7.2 kang 119 with standard kernel.
Have you tried wiping the battery stats..?

So you say it's done that for a while... obviously it's not possible to pinpoint an app. I guess then you have some funky cruft buildup (say, a lot of rom flashes and some settings getting squiffy) or your battery's dying. I know for sure that the rather excellent Battery Widget Reborn can give a health check on the battery as part of the widget (although I dunno if it's GB compatible). The second solution may be to try a clean wipe. It's drastic, yes, but can clean up any lingering problems if you've been updating for a long time without the occasional wipe. If you haven't...then I dunno.

I'm not trying to be rude. It's just that battery stats are reset after every reboot, so wiping them does nothing. It's also easier to be blunt to get a message across.

Bb=725 ril=0218(10b) the kernel is the latest OC kernel from temasek (any suggestions there, is there a better one for wiui/miui roms?).

[Solution] Flickering screen, poor battery backup, sudden discharge [n7000, Note]

A month or so back I started facing weird problems with my year old Galaxy Note, n7000:
1. After reboot, the battery would go down by 15-20% and then without charging the battery %age would gradually increase by 5-10%
2. lots of flickering on screen followed by auto shutdown whenever the battery %age went below 15-20% after normal usage
3. Very poor battery backup (I blamed most of this to the Rom Mods I had been installing at that time- only partially correct!)
I am sure that many of you might have been facing such problems and running from forum to forum to get a solution- I did.
Solution:
Get your battery replaced- most of us have had our Note for a year and some months now...life of the battery is approx 1 year for regular use, thus, the stock battery that we got with our Note is well past....
I never faced the above problems after battery replacement!
Hope this helps others like me!!
I started having this problem after getting a new battery, my old battery which was weak never showed flickering. But this new one which is original samsungs battery at below 15% show flickering and sudden discharge despite a good battery time.

I got rid of the damn problem after getting new ones...Is it possible that the batteries you bought are not genuine/fake?
Which ROM are you on- the Stock one or some mod-rom?
When I was searching for a solution to my battery issues some members suggested battery-calibration and full charge-full discharge cycle to get rid of the problem. Both the solutions suggested at that time did not work for me.
There was also a solution about cleaning the mini-USB connector which gets seriously dirty collecting grime from our pant pockets! That did work for me initially when the battery was good.
Please let me know if any of the above helps you.

Guys - Me too have the same issue, but this started immediate after updating the Jelly Bean 4.1.2. It never happened while on official ICS.
I could observe the battery is very much thick now, which is a symptom of over charging. The screen flickers and brings phone down abnormally.
After connecting the charger for a 5 seconds, suddenly the battery level shoots to original state from where it went down. Most frustrating, it happens very frequently.
I am not sure if the same will persist even after replacing with a new battery. Or I would need to go back to ICS again.
Any suggestions?
Cheers!
If the battery is bloated then it's better to get a new one.
Erm... is this thread still up?
I just wanted to know if the bloated battery would cause boot issues, stuck on the model screen?
I would guess the problem is with the bloated battery's voltage is insufficient to power up the systems... i guess
I need confirmations... thank you in advance

That never happened to me with a bad battery. What version of Android are you running?
i changed my battery just a two weeks before and the battery backup has decreased very much
can someone help me how to check whether my battery is in good shape or not ?
What do you mean with "battery backup"? Maybe "capacity"?
What battery did you buy?

4.1.2 xxlsz deodexed by eybee
The problem is, after I restored most of my data, apps and system data separately, the screen flickers a little bit and then the restore process completed without any problem. After that I restart the phone, stuck at the model screen only for unknown reason. The data is also from previous xxlsz which I had trouble with some system app crashed but fixed by returning to another backup though.
So, currently I'm leaving the phone without any data restored, only stock fresh out of the box xxlsz with titanium backup only installed. So far the phone is quite stable, I've turned off the adaptive power adjustment in display as well as lowest brightness just in cast it might occur again.
I've been reflashing xxlsz a lot this morning, over 3-5 times due to stuck in boot logo and model screen. Even though flashed the latest philz 4.90.8, it would just revert back to the old philz 4.8x with cwm 6.0.2.8
One last thing, my batter bloated pretty bad about half of it has been expanded. I mean from the bottom part (no copper connections), half of it has reached out of the body.
Well,
hppend to me b4, flickering issue below 10%. It was bloated. Bought new one. Bloated again after 6months. Again, bought a new one and it can last only 7 hrs without switch on data.
This is what we get from massive production company.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
By battery backup I mean the time my battery survives after a full charge is like only 2hrs with minimal use :/

Maybe you bought a "bad" battery...
Ok, successfully restored to another checkpoint, now trying to extract a stock build.prop from stock xxlsz, eybee's build.prop I believe been making my phone goes hot and consumes more power than normal (I guess)
damn issue as well

I seem to have the same issue
1. Battery drains rather bad
2. Screen flickering
3. Auto shutdowm
Used the battery in my wifes n7000 , however no issues at all
Only seem to happen on my phone.
I flashed it to stock std 4.1.2 , however problem still persist. auto shutdown few times a day
Gets worse when i use an external SD
@amogh you can check your battery voltages and battery temperature and compare that to optimum values. you can also use apps like AnTuTu battery tester.

Flashing another rom again wont solve much of the problem, if you happens to have the phone stuck in around bootloop and able to go into cwm, brace yourself, this process can get very repetitive to solve because a mere battery able to do such a problem. I had these experience before about 2 months ago before buying a new battery. Hope this link helps you understand a bit more of the battery

[Q] Mobile Network Signal (Cell Standby) DRAIN

Hello guys I'm a newbie here so please do explain to me some of the stuff if you need to
so recently (about 2 weeks ago) I used this guide to root my Incredible S and did everything except the Blackrose part
and since then
I've noticed that my phone has drained its battery a lot quicker than usual
I lost 11% of battery when I woke up, fully charging it the night before
I usually do not use it much, only a call every 2 days or so, and I do not have internet connection
so I cannot understand how I have to charge it every day now, when it used to last 4 days (on Sense)
here's a pic from betterybatterystats
thanks everyone
------- 4/10 edit
ok
back to stock rom
it has the SAME problem
"No data connection" and "No or Unknown Signal" on Betterbatterystats
with steep drops in battery whenever there is "Mobile network signal"
and next to no drop whatsoever when there isn't
PLEASE HELP ><
new attachments down there with stock rom
tell me if you need a translation
THANKS

Battery drain has already been discussed much in the CM10.1 thread. Its been discussed in practically every AOSP thread really.

I know and I've tried to look around for answers for quite a few days
but for most people
it's either the same as Sense or something else (too many apps, not charging fully...)
and for those with similar conditions
I can't find solutions for
and the problem got worse today
in the 7 hours I slept yesterday
the battery drained from more than 50% to nothing
so the alarm didn't ring because it shut itself off

The standard charging time isnt what it says on the box or anything. It should be roughly 6 hours from 0% to 100% and thats providing you plug it into an AC outlet. I would suggest trying an app called Greenify. It hibernates certain apps/ services that may not be in use thus saving battery. I would also regularly check the Running Apps in settings and clear out anything unecessary.

nonono
I don't have a charging problem
it's a drainage problem
and about Greenify
I already installed that when I looked over the battery saving guide (which didn't help)
I literally have 5 apps in the Running Apps section
the part I don't get is
why does Cyanogenmod 10.1 use battery so much quicker than Sense
when I have 1/4 the apps I originally did?
it's the "No Data Connection" and "No or Unknown Signal" part really bothers me.
oh and thanks for the time btw

Hmm then this battery drainage is strange. Try making a full backup in recovery. Then clean flash the ROM again. If the problem still persists, then I have absolutely no idea whats wrong lol

Actually
I tried that...
on Sunday afternoon I reflashed it
my exact steps:
1. ClockworkMod backup
2. Install from zip
3. Advanced restore - data (I restored the whole thing too once before that, but thought that just restoring the data might actually change something)
and that's when it went from 50% to 0 overnight
not looking too good -.-

Well then sit tight. Szezso is gonna release a CM10.1 for us as soon as he gets his new USB port.
oh well then
thanks for the help anyways
I'll just keep waiting
might want to go back to Sense though...
and more pics from BetterBatteryStats
just in case anyone knows what they mean
Drained 56% of my battery while I was asleep yesterday (for about 7 hours)
only 6% in the time I was at school, because of Airplane mode (I even listened to music and played a little Doodle Jump)
but I obviously want a phone to CALL PEOPLE
so I'm reverting to stock Rom
OK
so that didn't work out
I edited the main article
hope someone can help!!
meanwhile I'll look for more articles online since I know it's not (really) CM's problem anymore
thanks
Ensure to charge your mobile fully and after a NORMAL usage (calls, WiFi, Mobile Data on).
Just share the dump file from betterbatterystats. It would help to analyse better.
Edit:
Could notice you are using some widgets in the home screen. Usually widgets with high refresh rate drains your battery.
2. Facebook app is causing the partial wakelock. Even when the screen is off, the app is using your CPU. Try to disable autosync if it's enabled
3. Audio_out3 wakelock is due to phone vibrator is enabled. May be during call or keyboard haptic feature.
Power manager service wakelock is common and its in good level.
Try to check your CPU freq n governor.
And adjust accordingly. One more, Li-on battery should not be charged fully. Just charge till 85-90%. The battery will drain little lower compared to fully charged device. And you need to charge your device only when battery is low. Frequent charging n discharging will affect the battery life. Consistent Charge and discharge cycle is encouraged.
Try to share your fresh dump here or in batter battery status thread. There are many folks to help you with.

Thanks for the detailed reply sir
My widgets (aka weather & tasks) only refresh manually, and nothing is on Autosync (in the auto sync menu, anyways)
originally had only vibration for calls, turned that off too now
and what is "CPU freq n governor"?
didn't know that about the batteries
I'll do that next time
and I just reinstalled betterbatterystats, so I'll post the Dump File after a few hours
Thanks again!!

I mean CPU frequency steps and CPU governor. It's a kernel thing. Just search xda, you will lot of info regarding that.
Sure, post your dump with normal usage.
It's easy to click thanks rather than expressing in words
