You have to be on official stock rom to be able to OTA update on JB

You will not get any update if you are on a custom ROM with rooted kernel

Are you talking about OTA? If yes, then I think u should be on stock kernel..if I am not wrong, it is the same with Kies as well (not 100% sure about this) ..

first download and official firmware of both gingerbread and ics of your region.
using pc odin flash GB rom over the custom rom your using currently.
then do a full wipe/data/factory rset/cache/dalvik cache.
(this you have to do only on stock gingerbread rom)
then follow same process and flash ics rom.
and here dont wipe anything.
then use yr phone OTA checker and get the latest jellybean.

How do you want to update to jb?
By flashing a custom rom or wait for official update?
I assume you're on with stock official rom and kernel without root and waiting for official update. In such case don't do anything. Official update may come as a OTA or Kies.
In case, you are on with custom rom, go back to stock rom following drketan posts, without root and wait for update.

No gaurantee that jb kernel isnt also bad (brickbugwise)
We can update to official jb via OTA or kies or kies air.
But the question is what is the best method?
There are lots of guys believe that their problems with official jb is because of using bad methods while updating.
And What are the possible mistakes which can be done while updating to official jb?
Just update through kies , its the best method or OTA if you can , its from samsung and you wont run into any problem And wipe after installing JB (dont wipe on ics)

You do not have a stock kernel anymore. So you can't check or get official updates.

Go flash the stock ROM for your region, the process is there in the above thread and the ROM may be there for Download too. Else download the ROM from sammobile.com
