Hi all,
Just got the A.HD. still stock ICS.
I've been reading many threads and Google searches since, and have a couple of questions....
I would like to get answers from people who have had this phone for a while and rooted and/or done the OTA update.
I've read several conflicting user reports about the JB OTA update.
Is there any real performance gain? I've read articles showing JB boots faster than IcS and has a better overall feel.
The only solid thing I've read to make me want to do it is the ability to resize widgets in JB.
I've used JB ROMs on my captivate glide and Acer a500 and didn't care for them; but idk if they were just buggy ROMs or what (never used stock JB)
1) so who would recommend the JB OTA update and why?
2) does the motofail2go root method work after the JB OTA update? If not, what does work to root the official JB?
Again, I've read conflicting reports and would like to hear from folks that have done it.
Thanks!
-Eric
Motofail will not work on JB.
Root ICS, then you have to do some things to backup root with voodoo root keeper and what not, then install jb then restore root.
Do it carefully I am now without root on JB because I didnt know what I was doing.
To answer your other question, I think JB is worth it but meh up to you.
i kept mine on ics because the webtop feature.....
i modify a cheap atrix 1 lapdok 100 and when im away i use and love it...
of course root it to get ride of the att junk and installed safestrap recovery to install other roms....
i will start shacking about update to JB when custom kernel can be flashed to the phone but who knows when is going to happen
Backup your root on ICS and update to jb. I love having the latest and greatest and jellybean is definitely another and has some nice features that I couldn't go without now. Just my opinion

I reccomend updating to JB. I have JB and root and I couldnt imagine going back to ICS.
If you do decide to update, just be sure that you:
1) Root ICS first using motofail.
2) Open Superuser, scroll left to the info tab, select su binary, select update, exit when it finishes.
3) Next, install OTA Rootkeeper from the Play Store. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper
4) Open OTA Rootkeeper and select backup su.
5) When it's finished select temp un-root, restore root, temp un-root, restore root. (I reccomend doing it twice as stated just to be safe.)
[IMPORTANT: Don't forget to update su binaries and don't forget to temp un-root and restore root. Do NOT update while temp un-rooted. Can't stress enough.]
6) Go into settings and download/install the JB update.
7) Once booted up and running JB, open OTA Rootkeeper (if it isn't still installed just re-install it) and select the first option. Something along the lines of restore su backup.
8) Once it is finished restoring root, if anything still shows up unchecked, exit the app and re-open it. Now it should all be checked. (At least that's how mine worked out.)
9) Download Root Checker or open an app that requires su to make sure you're rooted.
10) Enjoy rooted JB.

Thanx for the responses
one more q:
does anyone notice battery probs on JB.
on other two devices, JB custom rom was awful on battery... (again, dont know if they were buggy ROMs/kernels or what)
thanx again
I stayed on ICS. It seems a few things got removed on JB. I had started a list.
Do the battery mod man. Then you won't have to worry about bad battery life.

I'm hoping to get some eyes on this plan I've made for hacking my new Droid so I can avoid bricking it at all costs.
I bricked my old Bionic 2 days ago due a combination of problems with Clockword Recovery Mod and the leaked ICS update, as well as my battery frying for some reason. Thankfully Verizon was none the wiser and they are sending me a new phone and battery in a few days. Although I'm cautious about hacking now, I still plan on rooting the new phone so I can recover my apps and data from the old phone's SD card.
Here are my plans for the new phone. If anyone could tell me if it makes sense or if they see any issues that will arise from following these steps, please let me know:
1. Root new Bionic with Motofail.exe root
2. Restore apps and such with Titanium Backup (restoring individual apps so I don't get any old clockwork garbage or other random stuff)
3. Download Voodoo Root OTA Rootkeeper.
4. Wait for official ICS OTA (don't want to mess around with the leaks anymore) and backup root with voodoo
5. Unroot with voodoo, install ICS and re-root after update (I've read on some posts that Voodoo works with the ICS OTA but I'm not 100% sure)
I'm more concerned with the OTA installing properly than keeping the root after ICS, though while it would be simpler just to not root, I really want to restore the TiBu backup from my old phone.
If anyone sees any flaws with this plan or if you think it sounds like there won't be any problems, please respond! I really don't want to brick a second phone so any help would be invaluable.
No one can say for sure if this will work since no one has the official OTA yet.
That sounds like a plan that may work. Even if OTA Root keeper fails I see a thread with a root method that is working on ICS leaks so it should
[should being the operative word here as stated this is all subjective reasoning from my time and use of Android and many different devices there is NEVER 100% certainty EVEN IF we had access to the OTA and had a method there is no accounting for any errors caused by a multitude of things [download corruption, bad blocks in memory during flash, you missing a step and borking the whole process, etc.] so no one will ever be able to say with 100% certainty that you will not have some rare issue and have a problem even with a tested method [and if someone does try to tell you something is 100% they have not dealt with technology and computers long enough to realize nothing is ever guaranteed even fully certified OTAs have caused bugs not accounted for and been stopped, recalled, or otherwise modified when users try to apply them and have issues ]
Anyways, I did read where you flashed the ICS leak via CWM recovery and everything I have been reading about flashing ICS on a Bionic involves the STOCK recovery and not CWM [most postings even SPECIFICALLY state to NOT USE CWM AND ONLY USE STOCK Recovery [but then again I read a lot] so if I had to trace the issue you had the with the limited information you have provided about your specific experience I would prolly point to that as prolly causing the problem. See the ICS with files thread here and that is again specified as part of procedure [basically format EVERYTHING restore it back to out of the box 902 then using STOCK recoveries to apply .905 then the ICS leak THEN after ICS is running they have a rooting batch file in there as well [so no worries about rooting in .902 and using OTA Rootkeeper to sustain it in .905 and on just get stock .905 unrooted to the phone then flash ICS with stock and root once it is fully completed and drivers and all on computer side are good [dont forget to enable USB Debugging [and in ICS there is an option to allow SU to apps only OR APPS AND ADB and after rooting you may need to enable the ADB side for any super user root checks if checking via ADB] but dunno if that is CM9 only option, but seems to be stock ICS setting in developer [it protects you if you use and leave enabled the ADB over the network function from others who may find your device over a network and getting SU access].
Sorry, I digress, all to say sorry to here you had the issue, but I think you may have missed something in the install process and here's how to address it, and your methodology seems sound in theory, but there is other information already available to augment your procedure and make it easier on you, my bad.
Hope all the info helps....
Here is that thread mentioned above that seems to distill what I have read on numerous boards in to one easy to download pack with instructions that has users replying that they have had great success with it: [Guide} Bionic to ICS w/Files
I am very sorry for what is certainly a stupid question, but if it is any consolation I DID search and read through threads until my head hurt prior to posting.
1) What is the best way to apply the new OTA 4.2 update for those with rooted Nexus 7 tablet.
With the 4.1.2 update, I blindly installed the OTA update when prompted and didnt realize there was a problem until i tried to access my stickmount USB drive. Luckily the nexus 7 was still unlocked so I didn't need to wipe everything. All i did was re-root it using Nexus Root Toolkit v. 1.5.4. and was back up and running. Is this going to be the same experience with the 4.2 update?
I have installed Voodoo OTA Root keeper v2.0.3 - is this a better route for upgrade instead of re-rooting via the Nexus Toolkit? And if so, how should I use it (do know much about the app).?
2) Is stickmount going to work? And if not, is there a good working alternative for streaming mkv h264 movies to MXPlayer (or other player)?
The main reason I rooted was to access a USB drive for playing movies, TV shows while traveling. We are heading off to Cabo for Thanksgiving and definitely want to be able to access and play movies from my stickmount'ed usb drive. Any suggestions ? Should I just wait to update - and if so is there any way to get the Nexus to stop prompting to install the update all the time?
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to have pity on me...

1) I just downloaded the OTA 4.2 .zip, copied it to my N7, ran CWM and flashed it. When it asked about keeping recovery and keeping root, I said "yes" and it worked without a problem!
2) Works for me.

Sorry these answers need to be dumb'd down for me
1) If i already have the update downloaded via OTA trying to install itself, is it really easier/necessary to locate the zip you mention, copy it to the N7 (not sure where to copy) and run CWM (not sure what that is or where i get it or how to install it). Is there an easier way to accomplish the update? Perhaps setting the Voodoo Rootkeeper to preserve the root or temporarily unroot.. then just install the downloaded OTA update and then return the root? Or just installing the update and then running the re-root using the Nexus Toolkit (like I did with the 4.1.2 update)?
2) I would like to know more about how you avoided this issue described in this thread here with stickmount not functioning with v4.2 because of the new mulituser framework that causes it no longer to see files in the mounted folders.
Thanks for your help and to anyone else that chimes in... any help is appreciated. Again sorry for being stupid.

i tried with OTArootkeeper app. but it don't update.... at restart for installing, it gave a black screen with android in the middle, with a RED icon inside it...... then it restart and 4.1.2 is always there
Perhaps these questions are so rudimentary that they hardly seem worth bothering with - but for some of us, these hacks and the info being thrown around in here are pretty confusing at times. I would be very grateful to anyone with some insight willing to help out?.
i found that this could be a problem with recovery mode... infact if i tr y to restart in recovery, it gave the same error...
i rooted with toolbox, and i'm thinking that it could have removed my recovery... now i'd like to try to recover the stock recovery with the same tool... but i'm not sure about that.
We seem to have veered off topic a bit here (at least for me)... so let me re-post the questions and beg again for mercy from any kind soles who can offer some advice?

Bueller...... Bueller...... Bueller?
Hi! Last month I did the 4.1.2 OTA update. I was rooted but on stock. It updated with no problems. I used Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, restored the root, and either renistalled super su, or just updated the binary. Can't remember.....But I did lose my custom recovery. Didn't realize it till tonite when I went to do the 4.2 update.
So to your question. I forced the OTA 4.2 update. And it downloaded. I made sure voodoo rootkeeper was set to save the root. Then let it install. It rebooted. I opened voodoo, restored root, was asked to update super su binary, accepted. Still not rooted till I rebooted.
So far I have root, and am on 4.2 JB. So my goal was to get my custom recovery back on. Install goo manager from market. Open it, go to the settings button top right, it will give you the choice to install open recovery script. TWRP- Then it will ask you twice are you sure you want to do this and reboot? Say yes. Mine did not reboot and it looked like it did nothing. So, I flipped into recovery and Teamwinn recovery was installed. I made a backup, and rebooted.
Good luck!
Thanks for your help. Glad to hear that the OTA 4.2 update should go relatively painlessly (keeping root using voodoo rootkeeper). If you have a minute, I would be grateful if you can just briefly confirm, describe specifically what I need to be checking/configuring in Voodooo (not very familiar with the app) prior to initiating the OS update, I would feel a little more secure before pulling the trigger.
It appears that many apps are still catching up with their own updates, including apparently stickmount (the reason I rooted) to handle the new 4.2 framework so I am thinking best to hold off until after thanksgiving vacation before applying the update.
Thanks again.

Hi hinsdale,
Have you tried updating to 4.2 yet? Also i heard that if you update SuperSU to version 0.98 the latest version it could cause issues and you will have to reflash the device.

4.2 OTA already loaded, lost root
Hi, I have learned the hard way not to do the OTA upgrade. I just let the 4.2 OTA download when asked to. Now I lost my root that I had on my Nexus7 with 4.1.2. Still unlocked though. What can I do now to root it again and not lose all my apps and data?
I'm a newbie, so please remember that when responding. Thanks.
Hi hinsdale! I am not a techie- I just learn as I go and read, read, read.
So, my voodoo app has 4 checks in the boxes. I seem to remember only 3 boxes checked when I did the update, but I'm not sure. It would make sense that all are checked.
After I updated, I opened the voodoo app first, and there is a box that says restore root. Then it asked if I wanted to update the su binary. Did that, still not rooted according to Tit. BU. Rebooted, then I was rooted. Good luck with your update.
I'm sorry I can't tell you how to run the initial save root on voodoo. I did it a while ago and don't remember, but it was not hard. Very easy.. Just make sure you Read, re- read, and read again before you do any modifications to your tablet. Know the possible bad outcomes, and be prepared to trouble shoot. This site is very good about helping you out if things go wrong. That's why it's a very good idea to be aware of the possible bad outcomes. The only way to know is to READ-READ=READ!
Did I mention READ??? lol. That's how I figure stuff out. If you read about others mistakes, you can avoid them. I also wait a day or 2 to see how it goes for others before I attempt modifications. That includes new roms. You never know what goes wrong until someone is the guinea pig! I am not techie enough to be the guinea pig!

same thing here...I tried to use TWRM to flash SU but it seems that after going into recovery using TWRM I can't see any any file or folder on my SD except 3 folders???? Can someone please help us....
YOu will need to search the best way to root again.
How did you root initially?? You may have to do it that way again. Just make sure the method is compatible with 4.2 JB.

Nexus Root Toolkit
The OTA update downloaded to my cache folder, I moved it to my sdcard. Wouldn't install since I had to fix a couple of files I had edited. So once those 2 files were fixed it installed just fine. Haven't had any issues yet.
The same on here...
But I guess it is better until they fix all this bugs they are reporting.
I'll wait until then.

Updated to 4.2
Hi have updated the nexus to 4,2 and used Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to keep my root followed the instructions as I did when updated to 4.1.2,my Nexus appears to be rooted superSu is working also stickmount sees the usb but it will not show any files on the sd card any help here please to get it to see the files on the sd card, thanks for your time

i dont post often as i am usually here looking for help. this time i get to help
i just downloaded and installed 4.2 OTA.
if your nexus was previously unlocked and rooted, it will download and install just fine. however you will lose root, but KEEP the unlocked state.
to root it again, you must goto "about tablet" and tap your build number 7 times to become a developer, this is not a troll, i got this info from another thread on xda.
then using the nexus root toolkit 1.5.4 with modeltype set to "android *.*.* any build", just do the root procedure.
reboot and ur in business, no need to update supersu, and busybox will still be installed already.
So I've been searching through the forums for last several hours trying to figure out the best solution to my needs with relatively little luck. I'm currently running Safe Strap 1.07 on Android 2.3.4. Ultimately, I'd like to be running latest version of safe strap (3.11) along with the latest OTA on my unsafe system.
When I boot to the unsafe system it lets me download the OTA, but attempting to install the OTA always fails. Do I have have to completely reset my phone to factory via RSDLite or is there another way?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

What version of software do you currently have? The OTA isn't supposed to push until tomorrow(04/15).
If you have any stock apps frozen you'll need to thaw them out. If you've deleted them you'll need to do a FXZ to get back to stock.
You won't get the OTA to JB unless you are on ICS. Google "House of Bionic" for the best support to get you where you want to be.

I just updated my unsafe system to 5.9.905. How do i go about getting it to the latest version?
Its been awhile but if memory serves that's the last update before you go to ICS then JB. Are you rooted? Have you tried downloading the update yet? What have you tried etc?

Elaborating on geekabilly's post...
Go to unsafe side, and uninstall ss from within ss app. Then uninstall app.
Use Samurai's HOB to get to ICS, and obtain root.
Update SU binaries
Backup root with VOODOO OTA Rootkeeper and Temp Unroot.
Go into "system settings" -> "about phone" - > check for updates.
If the update is available, let it update your phone, then use voodoo to hopefully restore root.
I haven't taken the OTA, as I am very happy on CM 10.1, and have no interest in being stuck on stock. So I don't know if you can keep root, but if you want to get JB, and try to keep root, IMO this is your best bet.

Worked!
This worked like a charm. My phone is currently on JB and rooted! Note, if it's not letting you get the OTA, just download it from somewhere else and place it in your SDCard. Then boot into stock recovery (volume up and down, select recovery, and hit volume up and down together again), then select update.zip and find your update.
Now I only have 1 more question...when I FXZ'd I forgot to uninstall safestrap from within the app. I believe this isn't a big deal since FXZ wipes everything. However, I am worried that this may cause issues when installing safestrap again.
Also, I only had safestrap 1.07 before I did this all. Does anyone know if a roms I've backed up with safestrap 1.07 will still be flashable in safestrap 3.11? I just really want to avoid bricking my phone because if I have to FXZ again I will loose root.
Thanks!

The post by herrsmoothe.
The short version:
Use "House of Bionic" (requires 3 large files on PC and USB cord) to update your GB to ICS (should not lose any data if you do it right)
Root
install Voodoo's Root Keeper
When ready, do the OTA JB update
Then swap the file back to keep the root (see the above instructions)
Voila, rooted JB OTA.
I think I might have painted myself into a corner on this one. I got my phone rooted on ICS & have been loving it. I used TitaniumBackup+ to do a full system backup and then proceeded to nuke the bulk of Verizons apps. All was well. Now, the Jellybean update is out. The OTA update hasn't hit my phone yet. So I went and downloaded the official build. It turns out the upgrade won't run without the missing Verizon apps. So I went to my backup folder & lo and behold: they didn't get backed up.
My fear is that the OTA update just hasn't made it to me yet & will also fail because those applications are missing. Right now, it's stuck on BackupAssistantClient.
Someone suggested I go and get gapps, but that won't install either.
Does anyone know where I can find copies of those apps or am I just SOL? It's not TOTALLY awful. It just means I have to wait until November for my contract to be up.
Thank you in advance!
Google "House of Bionic" read all insructions, download program, and use it to FXZ back to stock ICS with all the apps then you'll be good to go.
It should be nice and simple in your situation.
1. Use RSDLite plus the 6.7.246 FXZ file to put the phone all the way to stock.
2. Get root on ICS and then install OTA Rootkeeper. Make sure that the only things you do are root and install OTA rootkeeper.
3. Use Stock Recovery to apply the JB update. Check for root, which should hopefully have stayed.
All should be well after that. I've done some reading but I'm not 100% sure if it's safe to downgrade flash back to ICS after you take the JB OTA.
The House Of Bionic works perfectly! I did lose root though. I used the Voodoo app to back it up, but for some reason it just didn't protect it. I'm ok with it for now as I was more interested in JB than having root. All I really used root for was to get rid of the bloatware in the first place.
Wait!

STOP!
Use HoB to root as well. In the main menu, it is under utilities. THEN update the superuser binaries and use Voodoo to save root.
Then you should be able to run the update from the stock recovery and restore root when you reboot.
No need to keep the annoying bloatware! Or once updated you can add Safestrap and try out some of the cool JB ROMs.

Use 3rd Link; .246 ICS FXZ: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/cdma_targa/list.php
1) FXZ to .246 using RSDLite
2) Use MotoFail ICS to root Bionic again
3) Download OTA RootKeeper from the Play Store and press "Protect Root"
4) Download Safestrap 3.11 and leave it be; do not install recovery
5) Go to Superuser and press "OTA Survival"
5) Install JB update via OTA
6) Go to OTA RootKeeper when JB is done installing and press "Restore root"
7) IT WILL TAKE A WHILE FOR ROOT TO COME BACK, BE PATIENT; REBOOT IF YOU WANT TO
8) After reboot, go to Superuser and update the binary
9) Ta-da! Root is back. Now install recovery and get back to your rooting ways
OTA rootkeeper is not working for many people. Use the above at your own risk.
Success!!!! Rooted JB fully functional and retained my custom roms!!!!
Ok here is what I did on a rooted bionic running ics. I downloaded OTA Rootkeeper and and chose protect root. Then opened Superuser and checked OTA survival. I opened Safe Strap and uninstalled recovery. I had already downloaded the OTA JB via my phone update and also copied the file to the root of my ext. Sd card. I went to about phone-check for update-install update. After update installed, phone rebooted, update applied, 127 files updated, then the phone completed reboot and update was successful! Went back to OTA Rootkeeper chose restore root ( after a minute I had root again) , opened Superuser info, updated binaries, opened Safe Strap and installed recovery. Everything went flawlessly, I have root, 4g lte , wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, ready to do my custom roms... Thanks for the advice... Hope everyone has as good of luck as I did. Also I retained my roms when I booted into Safe Strap recovery, my Icarus HD and remix 1.83 along with my custom JB ROM still intact and fully functional.

It didn't work for me but the fact that it did back it up properly I was able to get root in adb and restore root that way so even if it doesn't work easy it's still worth using so you have a good plan B. There have been mixed results with all of the root protection methods so I probably should have waited but wasn't patient enough.

Using SuperSU and OTA Rootkeeper, both using their OTA survival/backup thing, it went flawless for me. After apply the update, i still had root. Didn't need to do anything after the update. Now that the root exploit is out, not much danger in going for it (Thanx to Dan and SamuriHL).
Unfortunately, my Eclipse ICS 1.3 Rom won't work anymore. which is a shame as I really like it and it was my daily driver. Even tried a fresh install on a newly created slot (i've heard that helps with roms after the update).
On the plus side, LiquidSmooth JB 4.2.2 is pretty damn awesome playing with that now.
I have to retract my statement concerning the Ice Cream Sandwich roms. I am able to keep the jelly bean ROM install new ones, but I cannot use the ICS ROM. has anyone had any luck in installing the custom ICS roms?

None of the ICS roms will work on JB. Will have to wait until the dev's make a JB version
