With possible tiered data plans looming on Verizon, I'm now in the market for a smartphone. I want to get in with unlimited data. I'm in a 4G area, and want a 4G phone. I'm trying to decide which to get. Currently I'm leaning toward the Charge.
From those who actually own the LG Revolution, would you get it again, or would you go with something else? Are you happy with the dev work, or other phones are better? Sell me, one way or the other.
Based on the number of threads in the development forum, I'd venture a guess that the Charge has a lot more dev work.
Any other thoughts?
I am in the same boat as you and have read your other post. Not sure which way I will go yet, but I'm leaning towards the Charge. Although, I am hoping the Bionic comes out before the 6th of July (when the new pricing kicks off). I like the DX2, but would like 4G (even though it's not available in my area) and a Front Facing Camera (FFC). Tough choice.

I don't think I'd get another phone. After debinging this phone, etc, I am pretty happy with it. We are limited on developers right now, but the one that we have makes solid products, so what I have learned from this experience (witnessing a plethora of developers), is that it's not always the quantity of developers, but the attention to detail the developer you have has.
There are some things to consider for the negatives:
1. Battery life is OK, but like all smart phones these days, it isn't great.
2. On most standard charges (including the one this came with) charge time is crazy. I use HTC chargers now (1amp) and it will take about 4 hours to fully charge.
3. This phone takes some work to get things done - Expect to push recovery yourself using detailed instructions, and expect to do a little work to get a ROM installed (not really that hard). Things are getting better all the time.
4. The charge probably has a bigger development community because it came without the Bing crap and was open source.
If you want to compare it to the charge in a positive light:
1. I have heard the charge doesn't have notification lights.
2. IMHO, kind of ugly.
3. The Revo as it sits is pretty much completely unlocked and ready for devs to mess with it.
Someone did a complete right up on comparisons here: http://androidforums.com/lg-revolution/344309-lg-revolution-vs-charge-vs-incredible-2-a.html
First thing I noticed he complained about on the charge was 384Megs of RAM. You will find this with all 512M phones because of how it allocates the memory to processes prior to boot (video, etc).
I would say that out of the 4g phones out now i would still choose the revo.. i had the thunderbolt it was really not a bad device. I ran it with the leaked alpha GB software and was worlds better than the firmware that came loaded even better than the update they sent out a month or so after it was released. I havent owned the charge mainly for two reasons: 1. i think it's terribly ugly, and 2. i just dont that i could ever bring myself to own a samsung.. they feel so cheap to me. I know that it can be sped up, but the two i played with (one store demo, the other a vzw rep's personal phone) both were jumpy, laggy whatever ya wanna call it.. i also despise the touchwiz UI it looks like kiddie version of the iphone with all those stupid squares on the icons. Now to the revo. Battery isnt a lot better than the tbolt but seems a tad better. The screen isnt "showroom" impressive but seems a bit more true, not so blown out like the samsung. I also think the phone looks better than eiether the charge or the tbolt. Now a couple things i dont like about the revo.. LG removes the android power widget, and i use that widget all the time. So i either have to use LG home and their power widget or download a 3rd party app... also i really am not a big fan of the little cover over the charging port, especially since with 4G u charge a lot.. the one covering the hdmi port is ok with me as that wont get used to often. And it does seem like it takes a bit longer than normal to fully charge the battery. Overall the LG will most likley tide me over till the bionic comes out which is all i am really looking for at this point.

I'm 100% positive i'd buy the revo again.
For a 4G phone from current options... Revo
Honestly the INC2 would be my first choice but I wanted a 4G phone when it comes to my area in October.
If i could do it again i wouldn't buy verizon at all. Other carries just have much nicer options for phones.
I regret getting a Revolution. The bad part was that I traded the Thunderbolt in for it so I'm stuck with it. Currently trying to trade if for a Thunderbolt on Craigslist. While the Thunderbolt by itself isnt the best, but it has custom roms that fix its problems.
The Revolution seems to be backwards in some areas compared to other Androids that I have owned or used.

Did you install the Debloated ROM or do it yourself? I installed the ROM and swapped the ADW launcher with Go Launcher. The stock home system is gone and the whole phone is a lot snappier. I'm keeping it.

You should really load the ROM that Cubed has put together. It is really nice. gets rid of the crap and puts Google back where it belongs. The capacitive buttons are now linked to Google. No Bing to be found.
There are still a few LG widgets i'm freezing sine they don't work in Go Launcher and I think I can find suitable replacements.
I'm not familiar with launcher pro plus, but I like Go Launcher a lot. Didn't care for ADW launcher.
I'll have to check out launcher pro plus to see how it compares.
Only thing I'm not keen on about the phone is the battery life, but it is 4G and those are some of the things we have to live with. These are a lot more powerful than my old BB Storm.
It's like having a computer in the palm of your hand.
I really think I'd get the Thunderbolt if I did it over again. They are basically the same phone but the 4G on the bolt is way faster and it has incredible dev support. Although we have cubed developing which is awesome!
just saw a video of the charge running gingerbread -_-...

Launcher Pro runs like a 1 legged dog on my phone. It was so laggy and slow... which really shocked me as it ran fine on my other old phone. I have been using adw ex and it runs fast and smooth. I also get better battery with adwex than I do with LG home.

Welcome to 4G. Its not the phone its 4G that sucks your battery. I will say this; The bionic is by FAR the best on battery life compared to all 4G phones on the market right now.
I adore it. I came from a Moto Droid that had a display that died on me, so I was waiting for this.
Yeah, the screen's pixels are a little annoying at times, but other than that its speeds are INCREDIBLE, the new motoblur or whatever it is called now isn't obtrusive (the phone is actually fast enough to run it where it is actually attractive), and best of all it feels great in the hand.
Also, the extended battery's replacement back for the phone doesn't add that much width to it, making it a really good purchase. Shame none of the cases they had in stock support the extended battery.
One thing that I think people ignore when writing about new phones is the sound quality, and many people I have called are astounded when I tell them that I'm on a cell phone. I was on the highway going 60 mph with the windows and roof open, trucks all around me, and my dad thought I was on a landline when I called him. However they made the microphone, they got it down perfectly.
Now, I *NEEDED* a phone because of work, so it isn't an option to wait for the Droid Prime or the iPhone 5. Am I happy with the Bionic? Absolutely. Would I have waited for an even better phone if I could have? Perhaps.
I feel like when phones come out, they are outdated within a few days unless it's an iPhone. Eventually you have to bite the bullet, and I think that the Bionic is the best bullet I've ever bitten into!

CM7 on the Tbolt has a toggle, but ya, I can see this as a pain on this phone. However, if you are using 4G - try juice defender. When the screen is off it will turn off data (and you can have your data turn on however often you wish to check for new data etc).
Highly recommend it.
I had to charge my phone yesterday twice. I went about 1.6hrs on the original charge then fully charged it. With heavy use it needed a charge around bedtime(2130). Today I got it off the charger at 0530 and used it heavy for about 40 mins, then barely touched it and it's at 70%. I have juice defender and it set to CDMA only. I do not like the battery life so far but I has ATK on it. I took it off and will see how it goes. I think the task killer is more harm then good.
Does anyone know the battery life with 4G turned off?
No 4G at all in my state yet, but our area should be getting it this year.

Yeah and I would imagine there is a lot of bloat that can be removed with custom ROM's or tweaking CPU settings.
//oops.. double post.
I am so temped to say forget and go back to old faithful.... Ip4. I can go like two entire days on a single charge. I admit I have never used an android phone without the ATK. Maybe that's my problem.....
I like it coming from two Htc phones. Im only having an issue with the vibrate sounding really annoying like its broken and the battery only dropping by the 10's. It dropped from 100 to 90 then to 80%. Nothing in between. Im on an extended battery and seems to be doing okay so far.

Myself as well. My only complaint is that with the extended battery it makes it feel like I'm holding a brick when compared to regular battery, but that's a small complaint considering how well the battery performs... It's just how thin the device is when compared to other LTE devices with regular battery...
Rooted in seconds and im really happy with it now. Just make sure you update the bb binary once rooted. It makes a hell of a difference imo

I loved my OG droid. Battery life was kinda lame, new phone were coming out so I got a TBOLT. Tbolt is very lame.
deciding to get a droid 4. im worried about these screen issues, everyone cries about 2 things. the battery and the qhd screen.
is it really THAT bad? I hardly play games and maybe watch you tube once in a while. if i do a play a game is it going to ghost that bad?
if i do any media its a psx game or angry birds on the pooper. occasionally ill try a new game out but nothing big.
if im not using the droid will the battery go down? that makes no sense if it does (alot), my tbolt now is at 5 hrs 95% turned off data.
i read alot on the web and text/chat often.
should i not get this phone bc of battery life and screen?
The screen is not THAT bad. I think it's fine personally. It stutters when scrolling through text but I don't think it's a big deal. Is it as nice as the gnex or razr? No, probably not. But I think it's fine. I have played Dead Space on it with no issues.
Battery life is fine for me with moderate use. It makes it through a full day for me. 4G defenitely sucks the juice depending on how much you use it. I will usually plug it in to the car charger on my way home from work just to be safe.
If you don't need a keyboard there are better phones out there. But this is definitely the best keyboard phone out there and totally worth the trade offs IMO. Wouldn't have wanted to type all this using an on screen keyboard that's for sure!

Thanks man, btw how bout this locked bootloader? whats that mean exactly?
are we going to get the rom support as we did with og droid?
Having a locked bootloader isn't as big a deal as some make it out to be. The way I understand it the only thing this really affects is the ability to flash custom kernels. Is it BS? Yes. But it's not the end of the world.
Sent from my DROID4 using XDA
The locked bootloader is thankfully a minor annoyance thanks to the community and SafeStrap recovery. I have already tested CyanogenMod 9 alpha, and it worked smoothly.
Personally I am very happy with the screen. See my posts in "is the Droid 4 the best keyboard phone" for more information.

DroidOG > Droid4
I have the DroidOG and loved it. I was so reluctant to leave it, but when I got this phone, I was surprisingly impressed.
Battery life is not much different (at least for me) with this phone compared to the DroidOG.
Keyboard is amazing. I love what Motorola's been doing to their devices.
I have a Zagg on mine and the screen isn't as bad as I was expecting. I use the Droid 4 and a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket (which has a Super AMOLED Plus screen) and am not disappointed by the Droid 4 at all.
Droid 4 Screen
The screen is NOT that bad. You will get use to it. The only bad thing about the screen is the blur that occurs when you are scrolling test. Some apps are worse then others. PowerAMP has a pretty big blur when you scroll through text but with the stock web browser you don't really notice that blur on the text when you scroll. Another thing to keep in mind also is the qHD screens are pretty battery efficient which is definitely needed on a 4G LTE phone. Don't let the screen be a deal breaker because it really is a great phone IMO.
awesome guys thanks for the replies.
how is everyone's battery? How long can we get on a full charge?
if it can make a whole day 15 hours i'll be happy (moderate use) of course.
id be only using 3g and turning of data completly 8 majority of the day. (no service at works drains drains the bat searching for signal)
I leave background data, wireless and 4g connected all day, it does just fine. Needs a charge by the end of the night, but usually not before unless I spend several hours gaming or listening to music and keeping the screen on because I'm dumb. It does pretty good.
Could still go for a big fat battery backpack, though.

Basic advice, if you really want a keyboard, get the Droid 4. If not, go with Galaxy Nexus or Razr Maxx. I have heard that there is a GSM radio built into the Droid 4, it just isn't active. Assumption is Motorola will activate it at some point but who knows for sure. I don't have any experience with the Galaxy S1 but I think the screen on the Droid 4 is fine. Maybe not as pretty as some others, but it is not bad at all. I like it just fine. Performs will in sunlight which is a plus as well.

My XT860 is pretty good. I'm trying to get 2 years out of it, so far it's been only 8 months, but I think it might be able to go a little further.
If we could get ICS fully up and running, I don't think I'll look at getting a new phone until the 2 years have elapsed. I love the phone so much I am buying a secondary backup one from another xda member this weekend.
I have the extended battery in it which usually lasts me the full day. D4 doesn't have removable battery, what gives? I need a keyboard phone and love the power...
The phone is fine - it does everything that I need it to do, will be great through update time next June, and, unless there are a ton of apps that are ICS-only that come out by then, I think it will be fine even if it stays GB. I will likely keep this phone as a GSM travel phone unless my next phone can be the same, and just use the D3 when we are away from Verizon.
I love the droid3. The keyboard and everything about it. I do want the droid4 tho because i hate having things in my pocket. So a thinner phone would be nice

Loving me Droid 3
Even though I've only had the phone for a few days I'll comment anyway. It is probably the best functioning handheld device I've ever had (I've been through quite a few over the years). It replaced a basically defunct make and model of phone that I had an extended warranty for.
edit:
This thing is a horrid battery hog 26 minutes of solid use and it's down from 100% to 80%!
I'm now on my fourth D3 (since August), so not really too happy.
The D3 is OK w/me, love the keyboard, even tho a smaller screen than my other DX & DX2,no complaints, I like this better than my 'ol Inc2, only complaint is the 3G is way slower than with/fi.
---------- Post added at 05:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:15 PM ----------
But I use the one click booster & that helps my 3G speed for a little bit. Bad reception area.
I'm happy with mine I had a extended battery but I had to send it back because it would only work half of the time. I got the profiles setup now with rom toolbox and it has been a huge asset. My next phone is going to be a htc phone miss having one though 90% of my phones have been Motorola

Still love my D3. I've dropped it a ton since I decided to go caseless and aside from ugly chips on the corners (and some gouges in the screen) it has stood up well. I have a backup though just in case.
I won't make it the 2 years. I keep an eye out for busted up phones to fix, and the D4 just started popping up (and the parts to fix it) so I will be moving on as soon as I find a deal. Going to keep with the keyboard phones though.

Droid 3 is solid
I started w/the D2,the X's,X2's,Inc2 now the D3. Love the KB. Ok slightly smaller screen but no problem. The D4 KB has other characters-no thanks & it's 4G,not ready for that here. I figure I'll let Red get it built first.
My D3 gives me no problems, the weight makes me feel like this cell is a solid phone, good sound, easy w/the root I've got 98 apps I use with still no problems. So I'd say I'm content & happy w/my Droid 3. No bugs I have to worry about w/my D3, I think Red shuold have carried it longer but 4G took it away.
I still love my Droid 3! It's the device of my dreams. With all the tweaks (esp. Atrix Camera), and rooted, deodexed stock 5.7.894 it's perfect. I wouldn't switch to the Droid 4, not really Global, thicker, no replaceable battery. I really love the screen and its great outdoor performance.

I have a HTC one x too and was expecting it to be a large jump in performance and an all round better phone.
Don't get me wrong this is a great phone and for the price its fantastic. From all the reviews I expected this to be the ultimate android phone.
My main priority was better battery life and good screen. The HTC screen is great but the battery sucked. 2.5hrs of screen time on a normal/heavy day.
Quick review of the vitals compared to One X.
Screen - One x wins this one by a small margin. The colour looks a little flat on the n4. It is still a great screen. My main gripe is the lack of useable screen as the n4 looses about 1cm of the bottom due to the on screen buttons. Things just seem a little squashed. The screens are the same size but the HTC has so much more real estate.
Performance - n4 wins this one but only by a small margin. Some apps actually loaded faster on the one x. The n4 is very smooth, no issues. The n4 does not get hot either. Running franco kernal helps. The one x does stutter a little but still performs well. It gets a little warm with heavy use. Most of it has been sorted with latest update.
Battery - The one x sucked. Its OK if you have charger at work, etc. It will last the day but you can't fully utilise it as much as you may want. Only had n4 for a day but it seems better already. Running franco kernel. Battery does not get hot either
Build quality/design - I would say its an even draw. Both the one x and n4 are pretty solid. The one x feels better in the hand but the n4 feels lighter. In fact the n4 feels cheaper due to the lightness. Its obviously not but its just the feel. Individual preference would factor here. I'm still sat on the fence.
Software - This has been done to death. HTC has sense and n4 is pure android. Individual preference would factor here again. My preference is pure android, hence why I bought it. N4 4.2.1 has some great additional features which wins it for me. To much to go into detail here.
Camera - I'm a little disappointed with the n4 camera. Its not very quick to focus and no multi quick shots like with the one x. Pics are not as clear either. Video is good so hoping its just a software thing which will get sorted with ban update. One x is a great camera with quick focus and clear shots. One x wins hands down.
Hope you found this of use if your not sure. I'm not 100% if I'm going to keep either the one x or n4. I will have to wait and see. I don't think the n4 is a great step forward over the one x but a great buy for the money, that's of you can get one ordered!
Keep the N4 if you want key lime pie. Or return the N4 and buy one of next years A15 phones instead.
You were expecting good display and battery life. Most reviews say the battery life is not good and the display is 'washed out'. So keep it or give it to me

The display is good but have been spoiled with the One x. The battery is doing very well. 3hrs on screen @ 50%. Its only had one charge cycle too!

Good review and one i'd agree with.
Only thing is the One X display might be good, but colours are more accurate on the Nexus. They are too over saturated on the One
X and both the screen and camera pics have better colour reproduction on the Nexus.
5hrs of on screen time so far. Very impressed. That's double what the One x would get

Perhaps there are variables you have not mentioned..
Screen time.. What is running in the background? Screen time running what apps?
As for the display looking flat, I have no idea what that means. Mine looks very sharp and the colors seems very accurate to me. Colors are not as bright as my Samsung was but they are much sharper and they look more normal. This is by far the best display I have seen and looks just as good as my brothers iPhone 4s..
In regards to the space.. it is very simple to get this space back by using the hidebar app along with button savior. You can have all your space. I have these apps and it is great being able to utilize the entire screen.
I have had the nex 4 since the 27 th and have loved it. It took me some time to figure out how to get the best battery life seeing that when I first got out I added every widget known to man and I had everything auto syncing. More my battery life is tremendous.
If battery life is your main priority you can get great battery life from this phone. Of you want to have time of widgets, etc then you sacrifice a bit.
The only real issue or complaint o can think of right now is not being able to use a usb drive... Occlude I could list things I would like but those are not complaints.
Just my opinion though.. I know the htx one x is awesome though too but I think the nex 4 is equal to it at least and costs much less.

I also came from a HOX and agree the screen on it is slightly better. I think the camera on the N4 is slightly better than the HOX personally but I do miss burst mode (looks like it'll be in the next CM nightly though). Overall I much prefer the N4.

That is pretty good. Better than I thought it would be.
The only thing I don't like about this phone is thermal throttling. I really hope it's nothing more than a software issue that can be fixed with an OTA update.

It's not a issue. It's intended, it was like that on the Galaxy Nexus. We had the ability to disable the throttle via kernel options though.
I've not had any issues with performance drops or heat issues. Maybe the Franco kernel helps.
It's not meant to be an upgrade from the One X. It's supposed to be a better alternate as it has stock android, and it's half the price.

I am sorry but have you tried playing some games on the phone? Just 5 minutes later you can see that the GPU clocks down itself to 200 MHz (from 400MHz). That's like the phone uses only half of its power, which surely is an issue.

@ OP what did you expect from the nexus 4?? Battery life is better than the One X, it is more fluid, it has/will have better development, its running stock android, its more affordable, it has an amazing SoC, a great screen. What else?

I've played a few games and don't notice any lag. Does it really matter if it drops the MHz speed if the performance does not drop?

The thing is, it does lag! There are stutters you can see when playing high quality games.
