Hi all devs,
This thread is intended for developers who want to give feedback on the alpha JB ROM.
See full post on Developer World.
Today we are making an early alpha ROM of Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) available for Xperia™ T and the open source archives, as a way for us to get valuable feedback from the custom ROM community. Thanks to the great dialogue we have with open community developers, we see this as a valuable tool for us to get more input, and for the open developer community to get to try this alpha out hands-on. The ROM does not have the final UI upgrades that will be in the official release.
Please note that this ROM is strictly targeting advanced developers, and it will not work for ordinary everyday usage, as it only has a limited set of features working (you can for example not make any phone calls). Several more legal and usage conditions apply – please see the Important information section in the post for more details.
Important information
Since this is far from the final software upgrade roll out, there are a few requirements to pay close attention to before you download and install the ROM:
• You should be an advanced developer with extensive knowledge in how to install and switch between different ROMs. If you are a consumer without these developer skills, then we strongly recommend you not do try this as you may damage your phone.
• You must be using an unlocked Xperia™ T. It will not work on a locked Xperia™ T.
• You must unlock your phone using Sony’s Unlock boot loader service, and agree to all the legal and warranty conditions that apply. Please note that you may void the warranty of your phone and/or any warranty from your operator if you unlock the boot loader of your phone. Sony can then no longer guarantee the full functionality of your phone, and will not be responsible for any unusable functions or loss of personal data associated to the alpha ROM being flashed to the phone.
• Also, if you unlock the boot loader, you will not be able to download and install the final Jelly Bean upgrade from Sony. For additional information about limitations and warranty restrictions, please see Sony's Unlock boot loader service.
• You should have read through and acknowledged the limitations of the software described below.
Only a limited number of features and functionalities are working and turned on in this alpha ROM.
These are some of the features that are turned off or not yet working in this alpha ROM:
• Google Mobile Services (GMS) apps are not included (for example, Gmail, Google Maps, etc.).
• Modem is turned off and the SIM card will therefore not be recognised (this also means you can’t make any phone calls).
• Bluetooth™ is turned off.
• Wi-Fi® is turned off.
• FM-radio is turned off.
• NFC is turned off.
How to install the Jelly Bean alpha ROM
To install the alpha ROM on Xperia™ T please connect your Xperia™ T to our Sony flash tool for unlocked devices and install the Jelly Bean alpha ROM. Check out the Sony flash tool page for more information on how to download, install and use this tool.
The Jelly Bean alpha ROM will be a clean flash, so make sure you do a proper back up of everything on your phone before you flash it. Please note that there is another software version available for Xperia™ T smartphones in the Sony flash tool for unlocked devices, as it is possible to flash Xperia™ T with an official Ice Cream Sandwich software versions well.
Developers, please let us know what you think!
One of our ambitions with this release is to get feedback from the great developers in the open community So if you flash this Jelly Bean alpha ROM and download the open source archives, please provide us with tech and developer feedback.
Hope to get your tech and dev feedback!
/Kalle
this is what we needed

thanks

Great work,
A nice general warning here - this is only to be used on unlocked phones via EMMA and is really only for developers not the consumer/end user. If you try and flash this on a locked phone your device will boot to a black screen and you will have to go back to the Sony Upgrade Tool to flash an official ICS software package.

Actually, since this is just a preview and doesn't have important things working, don't link to it in the all-in-one. This is not for the end user at all, and in fact encouraging people to check this out can cause more issues than not.
Wow. Nice - will test and this will be an awesome help for CM10 and CM10.1.
If someone can post the rom it would be nice, I don't have a XT, I develop for XS, but love to try to port some things

I have no real skills to help but on behalf of us mere users, thank you Sony, for the alpha and thanks to our top devs for testing (and workarounds '!) great to see and another example of why Sony won the oem 2012 award

<3 the fact sony is using a 3.4 kernel :win
wow.. great work sony
looking forward for this release, hope no more graphic lag (homescreen especially)
Does it mean that we are going to get some stable ROMS based on official JB with 3.4 kernel for 2011 xperias? You guys are awesome
Thank you Kalled, and most importantly thank you Sony, for being one of the very few manufacturers that fosters the development and customization of the ecosystem.
And thanks in advance to all the dev's who are prime to put this to good and practical use.

Hi .
Today we release an Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) beta ROM, as a follow up to the previously released ICS alpha ROM.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJbDl8aikUk
In line with our goal to support the open XDA developer community, we want to give you the chance to try out our coming upgrade to ICS (Android™ 4.0) in this beta version. While the ICS alpha ROM was an early preview, the ICS beta ROM have passed some certifications such as Modem type approval.
As with the alpha release you should have an unlocked boot loader http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com, and have the knowledge to switch between different ROMs.
Find the links to download the packages at Developer World.
Again we appreciate your feedback on the beta ROM in this small survey. Some of the improvements in the Beta release compared to the alpha release:
• Updated UI
• Updated Widget picker
• Lockscreen
• Connectivity turned on
• Updated email client
• Added quick dial
Lastly, we do follow the comments and new threads posted at XDA and we will very shortly release the open source archives for custom ROM community. I know the FreeXperia team working on CyanogenMod have made lot’s of progress on their custom ICS ROM and we try to support the team within the frames that we are allowed to operate.

nice work SE/Sony Dev team!
since i got the 2nd post here might as well make it useful
important info:

ok so i dont have much time so will make this quick...
if u are on any Xperia 2011 device other than ARC S, RAY, NEO V then DO NOT FLASH THIS... cross flashing is NOT recommended... wait for the devs of ur devices to port it and provide update.zips for easy flashing
make sure that u are on stock .42 firmware (though .58/.62 may also work)
the ZIP file provided by SE/Sony CANNOT BE FLASHED VIA RECOVERY!!!! extract its contents and read on how to individually flash each file
after individually flashing each file reboot device (fastboot reboot), wait for boot up and then power off device; then hotboot (fastboot boot boot.img) any kernel for UR DEVICE which has recovery ,e.g. latest CM9 kernel, remember HOTBOOT IT; DO NOT FLASH IT DIRECTLY... once device starts booting enter recovery and flash the packages u want (GAPPS, wifi/bt enabler, Superuser Fix)... after that reboot device... now u should be back on stock SE/Sony ICS Beta kernel and device should boot normally
those guys who were having gsm/keypad crashes on leaked ROM check if gsm/keypad works correctly on this build
i will keep monitoring this thread and provide inputs when i can

@SE/Sony Devs
why is the Xperia Play being left out always?
how do u expect ppl to get those devices if the vendor themselves dont support it... just releasing this ICS test roms ONLY for the "newest" phone models is not fair...
other devices should also be supported.... especially the totally different zeus board (R800i/R800a/R800x)...
@KalleD
im testing now,will report soon
can we all report in this thread rather than official survey by se,cause it feel comfortable here

to get FaceUnlock & Google Apps working, download the gapps-ics-20111230.zip file from the CM9 thread and hot boot (fastboot boot boot.img) any of my kernels/other kernels which have recovery and flash the gapps via recovery.... FaceUnlock should now work
regarding wifi/BT...
first try Bin4ry build.prop fix (just add two lines in build.prop) to get this working...
if that doesnt work check if the wifi modules (.ko) are there in /system/lib/modules/ also verify that the init.rc or init.semc.rc has the code to insert the modules at startup/bootup (insmod)
i am busy at the moment so dont have time to test this out

SuperUser Fix
Three Musketeers Proudly Present.....
Welcome to the Darkside....
Dark Passion - Unofficial Paranoid Android 2.55
This started as me compiling Paranoid for a few friends over on the Galaxy Nexus and then after a while it was getting modified everytime I compiled it, to add more and more 'Inverted Apps' and its got to the stage now where its all just about inverted.... when one of my friends suggested we should release it on there because it was 'good enough' we thought why the hell not... So now I've got a Xperia T and thought that you guys over here might like a touch of the Darkness on your phone. Because of the quality of the screen, the 'INVERTED' appearance looks awesome on this...
As stated this is compiled from source by me. Its just the plain compile, with no cherry picks (yet). We have added various things and taken some out to make it better for us and we will be releasing as is. Now this is made for our little circle of friends and I will not be changing it from how it is now... So please don't ask for the old apps to be added back. If you want a plain standard version of Paranoid, use the official version as that is the benchmark we all try to rise too
I will endeavor to update at least once a week, and update the inverted apps accordingly. Some of the inverted apps I use like Google+ will obviously try to update through Play Store when they are updated. If you update it will revert it to normal, so just simply turn off auto updates for them

I don't know to be honest... what are the differences between the two phones? I would say just try it, but I don't want to be reposible if it turns your phone into a paperweight
I really hope in the future T and TX roms can be made interchangeable, similar to when dev just started on Desire Z with the two different versions. Hope it is the same case for these two phones as they seem to be identical apart from design.
Hii,
After a long long time i'm back to XDA
This is mine first android phone. Before this one i have used iphone and HTC blackstone. So i need to learn a lot.
I have already rooted my phone with bin4ry method.
Next thing to learn is how can i boot in to recovery mode?
Or even better is there a dummies guide to flash custom roms for Xperia T?

I believe it's kernel changes that are needed but not 100%. Kali in the FXP CM thread put up his device repo for the TX so you could have a look at that as championswimmer (think that's his name) has released an AOKP build for the TX using this which apparently works. If it's just kernel related that should mean you could have the ROM and kernel as separate files and then people can choose the relevant one to them or get the updater-script to check build.prop and install the correct files for the correct device.

Yeah I asked championswimmer what the differences were... I was thinking more on the make a flashable zip for the kernel for the TX so you could just flash after the rom, don't know whether that would work though.
I'm just compiling 2.52 now so once that is done, I will have a look for the TX kernel repo and have a look what will need to be done, at least compiling a kernel will take less time than compiling another rom lol
Edit: championswimmer has very kindly pointed me in the direction of the device files for the TX, so I will have a go at compiling one for the TX in a bit

I flashed the ROM for Xperia Z and my phone got bricked. Now its on boot loop with recovery lost... I've got a locked bootloader.
Does this ROM require an unlocked bootloader coz while flashing I got a msg saying "Flashing Kernel" which obviously won't work since I got a locked bootloader. So any solution for this?. Right now I am using sony pc companion to repair my Phone

Hi champswimmer, good to see u here. I remember u from the Xperia X10 forums. Welcome to the world of Xperia ZR users! Can't wait to see u work ur magic with this phone  I will try testing the builds and report any issues I find, but probably only once they get a bit more stable as this is my only phone right now.. My old veteran x10 is completely dead

the builds are stable as of now. there are no major bugs.
what is lacking is the presence of ROMControl and other signature AOKP features, which will be slowly added back. but there isn't anything lacking in major ROM functionality
2nd mic also works in this rom? can test by video recording.
Status 7 installation aborted
Something in ROM is Wrong
---------- Post added at 05:06 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:57 PM ----------
ONLY wipedata/factory reset or ALL WIPE ??
I did all wipe and give me STATUS 7
I think that you forgot Flash KERNEL first (from the Zip Boot.img), I will test with this and confirm
Now Is all right !!!! ONLY WIPE DATA FACTORY....DONT WIPE CACHE OR DALVIK...this is VERY IMPORTANT
what is lacking is the presence of ROMControl and other signature AOKP features

AOKP is Awesome!
The latest build of AOKP is so perfect. Its smoother than CM 11 and much more battery friendly. AOKP may not have as many features as CM but who cares? Performance wise AOKP is my ROM of choice. Absolutely love this ROM! I've been with CM for the past 5 years, Looks like I'll be with AOKP way longer.:good:

If you would like to use TWRP Recovery with this ROM, you can use this app to install it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...mer.twrpxperia
Also, this app allows you to come back to CWM if you don't like it. This app works on all custom ROMs (that have FXP-based kernel) and allows installation of TWRP to FOTAKernel partition.
this rom has any recovery ?

yeah. CWM by default
Torch is not working on the newest nightly. Also, flashlight is not working in camera mode either.
Edit: Nevermind, works after reboot.
But is there an option to disable google-search bar on homescreen?

I see a lot of threads created by users with one question:
What is the BEST ROM for the Sony Xperia SP?
These kind of threads are not allowed here on XDA so I almost instantly report them
Well to give a straight answer to the question:
NONE!!!
Ofcourse you want to know Why?
~ Well lets start with the very beginning shall we?
There are a lot of diffrent custom ROMS. I know of the following:
No doubt there are more but I dont want a list that is miles long
CyanogenMod
AOSP (Android Open Source Project)
AOKP
Panandroid
MIUI
Omni ROM
Crystal PA
Carbon ROM
And ofcourse we have ROMS that are Stock Based.
To define Stock Based: Stock based are ROMS made from the firmware that has been released for any phone.
Below you see a picture with the Plain Stock Android Look and Sony UI:

This is one of the major diffences between the Plain Stock Android (from Google) and the Plain Stock from Sony. Ofcourse this is not the only diffrence. ROMS like CyanogenMOD, AOKP, AOSP, Omni and Panandroid do have the looks of Plain Android from Google.
As you may know by now Sony has his own Skin (duh!).. This skin is a layer on top of the Plain Android build from Google and includes:
Diffrent looks
Other App drawer
Other Homescreen layout
Other phone, conctact and messaging apps
Themed settings app
Themed Statusbar
Sony is the only brand that has his own theme engine!! Other brands like HTC, LG and Samsung have their own device/brand specific things
~ Some other layers on top of Android:
Samsung Touchwiz (Galaxy S4) against Sony UI:
HTC Sense 6 (From the M8) agains Sony UI from the KitKat update or Z2:
The above pictures only shows the diffrence between all the looks of the homescreen.. These diffrence are also found in:
App Drawer
Statusbar and notification area
Settings
On Screen buttons (only if the phone has them)
Apps
~ Lets get back to the Custom ROM talk shall we?
The main issue with most users is the performance of all the ROMS.. Plain Stock ROM released by Sony should be stable for daily use. This is not always the case and Sony is not the only brand that has issues with either updates, or their software.. Let me recall a few things:
Huawei Acend P6: 1 big bug. Wifi does not reconnect automaticly.. Wifi needs to be turned off and on again for connection
Samsung Galaxy S2: Update from GingerBread to Ice Cream Sandwich had battery drain issues
HTC One X: Hardware issues; poor wifi signal
Samsun Galaxy S3: No KitKat due to ammount of bloatware from Samsung
Samsun Galaxy Advance: Major lag since Jelly Bean update
So we are not allone when it comes to software or in some cases hardware. :victory:
Back to performance....
We all know that hardware plays a big part in terms of performance. Our Sony Xperia SP has good hardware for a mid end device.
Our hardware in short:
Snapdragon Dual Core running 1.7 Ghz
Adreno 320
1 GB RAM
All the ROMS will be running just fine on our device.. Our hardware is good enough to run it without issues..
We only need to remember a few words:
Testing, Alpha, Beta, Stable, WIP
Testing: Build is done but still in testing.. Things could be removed, added or fixed in a later build
Alpha: Build works proper but there are some bugs that keep the ROM from being a daily driver
Beta: Build is working enough for a daily driver but there are still some bugs
Stable:Build is stable enough for daily use. All the major issues and bugs are fixed and gone but it is possible you encounter one or two.
WIP:Work In Progress. ROM is build but far from stable and the work is in progress
Almost all the ROMS for our device are either in Beta or in Stable status. Which means that all the ROMS are working proper enough for daily use!
Thanks to all the hard working developers!! Thanks guys
But lets stop here for a second.. Not all the ROMs have the same feeling or gaming performance (as stated by some users) as stock ROM... Why is that...
This is an question I just dont know how to answer. All the ROMS are using other sources from other developers ( or development teams) so it is possible that a bug or optimatisation is missed. Just keep reporting bugs an issues to the developer and someday it will be fixed
So before I end this massive post I need you to do a small check list:
I want Root? (if Yes go to 3 if no go to 2)
Dont change anything
Root the device and go to 4
I want a custom ROM? If yes go to 6 if no go to 5
Install a pre rooted Stock ROM (See Android Development)
I am able to unlock my bootloader (Yes I can but I dont want to; go to 7, No I cant; go to 7, Yes i will unlock it; go to 8)
Install any custom ROM for Locked Bootloaders (Yes you can choose CyanogenMod for LB Look in the Original Android Development Section)
Unlock the bootloader and install any custom ROM you want!
How do I know which custom ROM suits my needs?
Answer:
BACK UP AND TRY OUT!!
You need to determine the following things for yourself:
Do I want the latest Android version?
Do I want to have Plain Android?
Do I want the SonyUI?
Am I willing to test things out?
Please remember some of the development rules:
Do not ask for ETA
Do not post issues without proper documentary like logcat, dmsg etc
Do not spam the development thread for requests
Be nice to each other
Be nice to the developer because he or she has worked hard on their rom
Moderator request : Make this a sticky thread...
Finally someone said it with big letters..Thank you @mrjraider !
That would be the third or fourth thread of me that is a stickey

I hope this thread will help users with their dilemma of ROMS.. If not do not hesitate to ask any questions here
Also I will try to update this thread from time to time
And I believe that these kind of threads should also be made in the General Android section of XDA

None : they all have little problems but these are different for each ROM. Again a problem could make one user consider the ROM unstable but not another user depending on their usage.
