Hey guys
I have my mother's Galaxy S here, where the GPS has a special issue:
It often just stops working - in GPS test it sees and uses 0 satellites, in Waze and GPS Test etc, it does not say GPS disconnected, but just that no GPS lock yet.
Sometimes it would suddenly work and have a lock, only to loose it again randomly (in town, on open roads too).
We had it in 2 laboratories, both for some reason insist on changing ROMs, and the problem is not resolved.
The last store says that they cant guarantee this problem is fixable, and that Galaxy S from all countries is known to have very weak, problematic GPS.
Does this make sense? its hard for me to believe, and sounds more like a cover-up for their inability to fix it..
What do you think? anything I can do? other than accept that this phone is doomed?

That actually doesn't work for me...
My GPS requires me to have an active internet connection when I search for satellites, for some reason it's impossible to get locks on more than one satellite without

Using IGO (legal).
This happens with the new standard AT&T ROM, and with the previous one as well.
IGO starts and quickly obtains satellites, then every now and then, without any obvious reason, I get a verbal warning that no satellites are found, and the GPS icon turns red.
After a few seconds, or even a couple of minutes, GPS signal is restored.
The Tilt is positioned near the windshield, and the problem does not occur in "urban canyons".
I don't have any other GPS app with maps that I can use to check this.
I'd appreciate any ideas.
Thank you.
You could try a free app like Microsoft Live Search or Google Maps to check against IGO. I haven't really noticed mine dropping signal unless I do go into a real canyon or something like that. One thing - when the phone goes into Standby, the GPS chip turns off for battery conservation. Is it possible that your phone is going into standby when you lose signal?
mine does the same after update to the new att rom, and honestly, i dont have an answer for you.
Live search cannot ever find any satalites, which is why I have resorted to using Google Maps. It works fine for me. So try using google maps. its works much faster and more reliable in finding sats, imo.
try a different radio. it has been reported that it works for some.
replies
snooginsguy: No, it always happens when navigating.
grandpareza: not sur ethere are googlemaps for my country (at least not with any reasonable resolution). Will check later.
P1Tater: Replacing the radio requires HardSPL, which I haven't sone yet. As I said, I'm still with the original ROM. I live abroad, so there's no issue with warranty. It's just that I'm concerned I might brick my device.
i heard that you have to update with quick gps everytime before you use your actuall gps... that would improve the sat tracking a lot better
It's on auto update
So that's not the issue.
I just got the T-Mobile Galaxy tab, and for some reason the GPS is not working at all... It shows the gps sign on the notification bar, but in maps, gps test, and gps status, there is no GPS data!
PLEASE HELP!
Thank you so much in advance,
Michael
i noticed that GPS perf is average indoor, if not below average. it is comparable to HTC Touch Pro, which is quite disappointing.
If you are trying from indoor, try to take it outside. many apps are saying that GPS works better when used with clear sky and i think it performs much better outside.
GPS is not working
I have samsung galaxy tab (sprint), live in Turkey. But GPS is not working both indoor and outdoor. Always searching.
I dont know, ı have to change ROm or not.

I would make sure that I'm not using a case that has a magnet or any kind of metal on it. They interfere with radios and especially the GPS.
A couple of months ago I started using a Zenus case which has magnetic buttons. Almost immediately my GPS stopped working. It took me a very long time to figure out the real culprit. I tried rooting, changing some gps related files etc. None worked until one day when after accidentally leaving the cover at home I switched on the GPS - it started working.
Dude, you should update the maps in your galaxy tab. I updated already my maps and gps is runing smooth.

I bought a tab last week in Germany. The gps work fine in Germany, Holland and Belgium. But right now I am in Turkey and here it just keeps "searching" but never gets a location.
I wonder why and what, but I suspect location has something to do with it.
Galaxy tab Sprint gps not working!!!
hello i have a samsung galaxy tab (sprint) i live in malaysia, but when i on the gps it detect my location at hawaii plizz help me!!!
GPS not working
Hi
You definitely need to be outdoor for GPS receiver to obtain signal.
If indoors, you'll get signal if you have tile roof, not steel or concrete.
With a-gps, it might look like you are getting signal but actually, your device is using data to obtain location from cellular towers.
For best and quickest reception, enable your device's location and a-gps. Note, a-gps does not use lot of data, very little.
Hi Everybody,
I am very interested in purchasing the Tmo-US version of this phone when it is avaliable and I would like to know how is the GPS on these phones? How fast does it lock and for those who are coming from SGS, can you see a big difference in GPS performance? I am currently using a SGS vibrant on tmo-us and GPS is very bad on it. Thanks
better than thge galaxy s.
First time i used it it took like 10 minutes to lock on lol, but then each time after that pretty much instant (or close enough)!
Not perfect for mine, sometimes under the sky also cant lock any satellite or scan no satellite in car. But other people are getting pretty good result though. That's why i am not sure it's my problem or not.
I edited the gps.conf file for my location (not sure if neccesary, but had the file from my previous HD2 so figured wtf..)
gps locks in 15 seconds when outside
Mine is MUCH snappier than my previous HTC desire
Best gps I've experienced on a phone. Better than my omnia, hero and my wife's galaxy s, which is terrible
Thanks for the quick replies. I am sure with some new updates the performance will improve even better. I cant wait to get my hands on G2x now.
Also extremely happy with the GPS. Using MileageTrac everyday, and the GPS locks within 3-4 secs every time.
GPS is perfect. It locks satellites in 7-20 seconds. Accuracy is 5m.
so a few more uses and yeah still instant. thumbs up!
for those who got fast gps fix time, may I know what baseband are you guys using?
Can it be used for car navigation like the Desire HD? Anyone tried it?
I think I fixed mine.
Solution was (at least one among them)
- push appropriate gps.conf to /system/etc
- modify APN type of Mobile data to "default, supl"
- turn off wireless while aquiring GPS fix
My GPS now fixes within seconds with mobile data enabled.
Have any of you tried GPS Status? It helped alleviate slow-to-lock AGPS issues on my Incredible. If you launch the app, it forces a new download of the carrier's GPS file. GPS lock went from 2-3 minutes on some buggy ROMs to under 20 seconds.
It's not the most elegant of solutions, but it works.

yup, quite a few times works great.
I agree. Use it everyday. It seems more stable than the DHD with better signal lock.
The demo unit at the T-mobile store I went to yesterday had a horrible GPS.
It would freeze up google maps and wouldn't lock AT ALL when the satellite antennae was turned on.
With the antennae turned on, google maps worked, but the circle for your location was huge (obviously).

Were you trying to use it indoors or did they let you take it outside to test it out?

Did you try GPS on any other phones? Signal could have been bad inside the building.
Being a Vibrant owner, with all its GPS issues, I'm very interested in how the this works on the G2X before I consider switching.
Thanks.
Worked fine whilst I was out today. Only problem was a lack of a data connection.

Ok, I'm fixing this phone for someone who had complained to me that it doesn't ever get a lock. I had downloaded GPS status and found out it hardly discovers any satellites. For comparison's (or rather no-comparison's, lol) sake I was standing outside for almost 2 minutes and all it got was it discovered only 3 satellite(that too in grey) in that time while my galaxy s3 was able to get 12 sat lock in less than 15 secs..
Anyway coming back to the point, is it just only me or its an common issue with this set?
I did try modifying the gps.conf to put NTP and XTRA server in there, however it doesn't seem to do anything. Is there anything which can be done ?
For the FIRST TIME, It will take sometimes to connect to the GPS satellites. Try GPS Test tool to view GPS data and you can clear GPS data from here.
If you are using a custom rom, startover flashing the same.

Hi,
I've done a fair amount of searching on here and google regarding the gps issues with this phone. Tightening the screws definitely helps with the lock time, but I am still having issues with the device dropping gps lock when the display is off.
I have an S3 Mini running stock Android 4.1.2 and mainly use Viewranger for mapping and the GPS status app. Both apps work fine while the display is on, but when it goes off, gps lock is lost after an indeterminate amount of time. Setting GPS Status to 'Use gps when screen is dimmed' makes no difference.
I use both of the above GPS apps on a HTC Wildfire and a Galaxy Tab 8.9 and neither drop GPS lock when the screen is dimmed, so it is definitely an issue the S3 mini.
Here's hoping for a fix on this otherwise great device!
TIA
fourth ooplotel
Maybe I should rephrase the question
Is anyone here *not* having a problem with GPS lock when the display sleeps?
Ta
I hav the same problem which means I'm unabble to use running apps.... Have you found a solution?
No fix yet unfortunately, and it's looking increasingly like there never will be one.
I've been taking a GT8.9 in my backpack for GPS on walking trips. I'll also keep my old wildfire in case I need a pocket-sized GPS device that actually works!

Hi, i've just purchased the S3 mini phone and I have the same problem. Previously I had a Wildfire S one and I've never had any problem, even taking into account I use GPS to track my trip when I sail on the sea. I'll try to summarize some clues I've found:
- Samnsung Galaxy S3 mini with Android 4.1.2
- I usually use "Marine" app, from Navionics join "GPS Status"
- The problem only appears with "track" option, after stand-by, but after an indeterminated amount of time.
- Once we check the GPS is not working, I can see on GPS Status the satellites but no one providing position (i.e. value of 0/12 on pos/sat field). Finally I need to restart the app, GPS Status and the GPS to get the connection again.
- In other forums I've ridden about not to switch off the screen to avoid Android turn off the GPS because of energy safe mode. With tracking function should not be necessary do it.
I hope anyone can give us some light.

I have the same problem and think I have the solution (I am still testing, but sofar so god).
Use Keep My GPS Alive (testing) or GPS Keeper Lite / Keep Alive (still to try). Look for them in google play.

Thanks for the suggestion but I tried both of those apps and neither prevented the gps dropping lock when the screen was off. In fact, my gps/map application would stop tracking my location when the screen was on and either of the above were running in the background, so they actually made the situation worse!

Have the same problem. Often 0/12 with "strong" signal. But no FIX. And it happens short time after 11/12 (or so).
This happens with various ROMs (all based on Stock)
