Hi,
I managed to brick my Milestone, terminally I'm afraid, but the symptoms are different than what I see around the forum so they might interest someone else.
So, I first backed up everything with GOT Nandroid and Titanium Backup then modded CyanogenMod 7 RC4 0.08-11.04.05 (Android 2.3.3) successfully, except that the SIM was locked and would not unlock, although it works in another phone. This was a bug supposedly fixed in version 6 of Cyanogen...
Browsing the forums, the only thing that made a bit of sense was that maybe the GSM frequency was set to the wrong value. There is a Nandroid mod (but not GOT) that allows you to change that so I entered GOT Nandroid again. Since it had no such option, I Rebooted. Then, the fun begun.
The phone got stuck on the Motorola logo and no button, not even Power, worked anymore. After waiting for many minutes with no progress, I took out the battery - that made a change , the phone shut down. I then put it back - the phone immediatelly, no, instantly, cause there's no delay as when you were powering it up, lights up with the same Motorola logo. Tried several times, always the same behavior.
I left it booting (but also connected to the charger) for a whole night, no change.
The phone is not seen by the PC when connected to USB. It won't reboot, normally or to recovery. Buttons won't work at all. Yeah, tried with or without the SIM and the sdcard, no change. Tried to start without battery, just the charger, doesn't work.
Useless to say, I am getting bored of that Motorola logo
I suspect that the bootloader in the internal memory got corrupted. Can this be flashed even if the device is not seen by the PC (I mean by the RDSLite installed on it)?
Cheers
When the charger is connected to the phone try at the same timeull out and pull in the battery while holding the buttons who will get you in the OR
Yup, it worked. So first I got the battery with a question mark. Then I put in the battery and I got a battery at 60%. Since I was holding Power+Camera, it continued to the Recovery mode and now I have a working Milestone with Cyanogen mod!!
Thank you a lot, Mikicishte.
I still have to see about the initial locked SIM problem... but that will be mostly fun.

Have you tried to factory reset the Milestone, to see if after that the SIM is accessible again ?
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/14099-sim-card-not-detected-after-factory-reset/
You could try also to install a logger application catlog for example (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nolanlawson.logcat&feature=search_result ) to see in the logs if you can find out more details to help you with the investigations...
I did the factory reset as part of installing the mod.
Even if the post quoted reports the wipe as the source of the problem and not as a solution, I just wiped again with no good result.
Will try catlog.

or maybe you could try to use an unlock tool to see what error is reporting

Alright, you guys might be sick of me, but I have a great deal of respect and appreciation of you skills and knowledge thus far. I flashed my cappy to CM10.1 this morning. After flashing, it seemed to load perfect. But two issue:
First, I flashed without my SIM card installed, as most of what I read said to do it in this manner. However once CM booted for the first time, it never said anything about "no network support"or "insert a SIM card for service" which I've seen on phones in the past when there's no cell connection. I shut down the system, inserted my SIM, then powered it up. The phone did not recognize a SIM card, nor give me any kind of error message. I put the card in upside down once, and it told me that it couldn't read it. It's as though the SIM drivers are missing. I know the SIM card is in good standing, because I had to grab my old Palm Centro to take to work. I popped the SIM in the back and sent texts and made calls all day long, no issue. Any ideas on why the i897 isn't reading it?
The next one is a reboot issue. The phone is rebooting in "sleep mode." Once the screen goes dark, it'll reboot after it sits. If I put it to 30 minutes before sleep, it'll stay on the whole time without rebooting. it's only in sleep. I saw there was an issue with some lower serial #ed phones, and mine does have this lower #. But it never did this in Gingerbread. NEVER! CM10.1 issue?
Thanks in advance! I hope these issues can be worked out, because I really like this phone and CM is awesome!

Since I'm getting zero answers, I guess I'll have to reflash. Should I reflash CM10.1, or flash it to stock first, then CM10.1 again?

Go check your IMEI, if it says 0 or unknown, you'll have to flash back to stock, backup your EFS folder (with a root explorer) and then work your way back up to CM10.1. If you get the issue again, you'll be able to replace your EFS folder with your backed up one and it will that problem.
Other thing, make sure your APNs are matching your carrier's.
Now as for the reboots, so many things can cause it. I'd make sure not to have ''deep sleep'' turned on, many phones reboot cause of it. Next thing, I'd try different governor and scheduler (towards performance). Next would be to try another kernel for JB (I believe there are 2 to choose from that aren't the CM one). and finally, if all else fails, you can try upping your voltage by like 50 each steps.
P.S.: A simpler solution would be to go back to stock and try another JB ROM.
P.S.S.: It can take some time to get a reply back to your questions as this phone is getting pretty old and we aren't many techs to still support it. That being said, it still gets a lot of love in the Dev side.
I'll add one more thing to Bwolf's suggestions. If you try reflashing or go back to stock then back to CM or whatever else and it's still not working you might look at whether there is a modem installed. CM should come with a modem but for whatever reason it might not have flashed so flashing a modem could fix the problem. There is a sticky in the development section where you can get any modem available for the cappy. Good luck and hopefully you'll get this figured out.

Good point, let me add to this as well
You'll have to flash a I9000 modem (from the modem thread), they're compatible with the I897 on JB.

CM10.x has its build properties set to allow you to operate without a SIM card. So, there may not be any error message if there is no sim card.
Have you tried turning off wifi, powering down the phone, removing the battery for a few minutes, clean the sim card with some contact cleaner, let it dry, then reinsert SIM before inserting the battery. Then power up and wait about 10 minutes. Just let the phone sit there. If you can make a phone call or access Internet via cellular data, then the SIM is good.
To BWolf's comment re IMEI, occasionally it happen that there is a number shown in about phone, IMEI, but it is the wrong IMEI number. While you have the battery out, check the phone label under the battery. write the IMEI number on piece of scratch paper. When you reboot, check the about phone, IMEI, to see that it is correct.

Not sure what the difference is. I only see a sleep option that ranges for 15 seconds to 30 minutes. If I leave the screen on all the time, the battery isn't going to last very long.

Use Odin or Helmdal to flash KK4 without bootloader. THEN Follow path of backing up the KK4 efs folder mentioned by BWolf56.

Here are four One Click executables that I put together. Each is packaged in a zip file along with a Read Me file that contains Info and Instructions.
The zip file is used just to include the Read Me and to make for a smaller download file size. Once downloaded to your computer, just extract the One Click and Read Me out of the zip and follow the info and instructions contained in the read me file.
The title of these really says it all, but the Read Me files will give a lot more info.
Again, these are Complete Stock I897UCKK4 Gingerbread Firmwares.
Hope many find these useful.

I got a Sprint HTC One last week, rooted it, s-offed it and flashed several ROMs on it.
My problem is that in every ROM I've tested, the phone reboots after a couple of minutes.
Here are the ROMs I've tried so far:
- CLEAN ROM SPR 2.5
- CM-10.1-20130714-NIGHTLY-m7spr
- MIUI_m7wls_signed_07042013
- Slim-m7spr-4.2.2.build.7-OFFICIAL
- Sprint_HTC_One_1.29.651.10_Stock_Deodexed
- Sprint_HTC_One_1.29.651.10_Stock_Odexed_05.17.13
- Stock_w_Goodies_One_1.06
- viperROM_One_v1.1.0
I'm using TWRP 2.5, advanced wiping: dalvik, cache, data, system before flashing the ROM.
Does anyone have sugestions?

I guess that's a slightly different problem then mine.
My phone is S-OFF already and I've wiped and flashed almost every single ROM out there and the phone reboots (doesn't shutdown) every 2 minutes...
After I read some other similar issues, I'm guessing I'll have to use a RUU tool to fix the problem. The other problem is that I only have Mac and Linux...
I've read a post advising to copy the ROM file to the root of the phone's internal storage in order to do a proper flash.
Since I was always flashing the roms directly from an external usb thumb drive, I thougt it was a good idea.
I copied Android Revolution 2.5 to the phone's memory, wiped everything and flashed it. Installation whas OK so I rebooted. When selecting the wi-fi network on the initial setup I received a message saying "avoiding poor signal network" even thoug my router was about 10ft from me. After finishing the initial setup I rebooted the phone and then it got stuck hard.
Even when pressing the power button for over 20 second it didn't shut down. Now I'm waiting for the battery to die so I can see what happens on the next boot.
Again, if someone can help me on this situation, I'll appreciate it...

press the buttons while holding phone under a bright light and it will reboot, if that rom was a 4.2.2 rom from the intl. forum you're going to have to ruu it.

I've only used Sprint ROMs but still got those freaking reboots. Only by using RUU (provided by viperboy) I managed to solve the reboot issue.
Now I'm waiting for a software SIM Unlock solution, since I'm in Brazil an cannot unlock it OTA.
I'll post an update here as soon as I have a solution...
I'm new to this.
A totally random event. I restarted my phone one evening last week and it show no sim. Using the LG support tool I had multiple failed attempts to update the software. Then as sudden a the sim registration had disappeared it came back to life. All fine until again the phone just stopped registering the sim.
Phone is secondhand. And I have tried numerous times removing, cleaning and replacing the SIM. Tried another active SIM on the same network with no luck.
I've never had a 'bricked' phone so don't know what to expect but I imagine the phone wouldn't even boot up!
I have now rooted the phone and installed CWM recovery, still no joy and have in desperation performed a hard reset. Nada!
Software is V10h. I read something about EFS folder to backup but all I could find is a text file. The IMEI is not registering on the phone. It could be a very simple answer but currently I'm stumped. I have requested a replacement SIM but have little hope this will resolve the issue.
I hope someone has an answer...

re-flash 10h or 20a kdz. look for various tutorials on the forum. (btw, your phone isnt registring on network cuz your imei isnt being read, probably due to failed upgrade process
(or some other bug). it should be fixable though)
also, replacement sim wont help. its your cell phone that's faulty, either hardware or software, not the SIM itself
also, i'm not sure how it goes if your IMEI is blacklisted by your cell phone company - is it possible the phone was stolen? perhaps the original owner reported it stolen to his carrier and they blocked the IMEI?

If the IMEI is blacklisted, the phone will still show it correctly in the settings and the carrier will just block based on this. This is why changing an IMEI is illegal in most countries and why discussions on how to change it aren't allowed on XDA as it can get the site in serious trouble.

check if ur gapps are fine. reinstall all gapps. maybe u deleted some app that u shouldnt. happened to me too 2 weeks ago and i had no sim so signal , i couldnt see my imei, etc. if that doesnt help , then reinstall ur rom or install a custom one. I mean maybe u must be sure to check if u deleted some system app that u shouldnt. Since u have double checked with other sim , if its not from an app , then the above thread is right, the owner could have reported the phone stolen

There have been some problems with this, but normally due the the RIL on CyanogenMod-based ROMs. I would suggest that you find the time to either reflash v10h or upgrade to v20A/B/C (as appropriate for your region) and see if that fixes it for you.
you still havent mentioned anything about gapps. this means you checked and you are sure that they are fine ??
So I have tried flashing software V20A using the LG software updater and now all I get is the phone booting into 'S/W Upgrade please wait while upgrading'
I can get into any other screen, despite pressing all combination of buttons together.
I have attempted reflashing back to V10H and try and get it back to how I had the phone. No luck there
And also tried again with V20A. No joy.
Is there anything else I could try?

Hi again. I ordered one of these. Lets test it. Last resort
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2780274&page=165
I have seem to have found the issue and solution to this problem that many of us have been experiencing. If you have encountered issues like myself, there is a thread dedicated to the description of this problem; MAJOR LAG, RANDOM REBOOTS, the phone won't boot up and goes into a screen where you read:
----Mmc_failed failed boot---
After searching for about a month, it seems to be an internal SD issue. Many have reported to having these issues after they root, others upgrading to the non reversible DOK2 FIRMWARE. Others were stock with out root and had this issue as well.
**THE PARTITION OF THE INTERNAL SD CARD IS CORRUPTED**
Could be corrupted files, that stick to the phone EVEN AFTER ODIN FLASHING STOCK MANY TIMES.
(I Odin 5 times back to back to fix and the partition was still corrupted)
People thought "well, if Odin doesn't work, it's a hardware issue" I thought that myself, and it was not.
My friends, I have found something that has worked for me and would like to share with you guys. I hope this fixes your device like it did mine. I've been so close to throwing this Note 4 against the wall, running it over with my car, or smashing it with a hammer. I had no way to return my device as many have suggested to do because I left T-mobile a while back. Plus, rooting my phone voided my warranty. Yada, yada, yada, let's get into it.
*Since the internal partition to the SD card is messing up, we need to repair it.
**In order for this to work, you will need to be ROOTED.
*Download an app called "AParted SD Card Partition." Hope I don't violate any rules, but here is the link to it on Google Play.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sylkat.AParted
Once the app gains root access, you will be brought to the main screen. Click the tab that says tools. Once that screen pops up, you will see
Part 1 FS: fat32 . Size 31914 MB
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Please note that the size to Part 1 may be a different number. That is what mine read.
*You will now click Part 1
*After doing so, at the bottom where it says create, click it and replace it with REPAIR.
*Hit apply, and you're all set.
*Turn off phone, pull battery out for 10 seconds, as well as external SD card and Sim. (They hold small amounts of electric current which may prevent the phone to do a proper boot) I usually hold both volume buttons, power button, home button, and pull the s spen out for 10 seconds simultaneously, then put it all back together and boot up.
*******Also, I used the app to delete the partition, and creating it again to avoid problems from a faulty repair. So if you want to do that, click Part 1. Instead of repair, click delete. Once done, click Part 1 again, then click create. Hit the Fat32, and start it. Once it's created, you shouldn't have issues. In case you're worried, pictures and videos will not be erased.******
I HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH THE DEVELOPER, BUT HE SAVED MY DEVICE WITH THIS APP. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO THANK HIM AND HIT THE LIKE BUTTON IF THIS WORKED FOR YOU AS WELL. LEAVE COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS BELOW, AND IF YOU SEE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THE PROBLEM IN OTHER THREADS, RE- DIRECT THEM TO THIS THREAD.
This is what I got when repairing the partition. You should have a message as well.
um... if they can't start up the device, how are they going to download it from the play store and install to run it? Thanks!
Are you able to go into DOWNLOAD MODE AND FLASH FIRMWARE? I had the Mmc_failed screen and my phone would not turn on until I took everything out the phone; battery, both cards and s pen, then hold all the buttons down.
Try this to reboot like I described up at top.
Turn the phone off. Pull the battery out, s pen out, SD card and SIM CARD.
PRESS AND HOLD ALL HARDWARE BUTTONS FOR 10 SECONDS WITH EVERYTHING OUT THE PHONE. I CLICK ALL THE BUTTONS SEVERAL TIMES TO GET ANY ELECTRIC CURRENT OUT THE PHONE. IT WON'T BOOT UP IF YOU DON'T DO THAT. I'm assuming it messes with the boot up process. Anyways, Re assemble and boot. When I was having this mmc_failed crap, it would take several times doing these steps so that the phone could boot. Don't get frustrated and try again until it boots up. Sometimes it would sit on the NOTE 4 screen, other times it would boot up to the Android logo with the mmc_failed screen. It takes several attempts since the PARTITIONS TO THE SD CARD ARE CORRUPTED. IF YOU ARE ABLE TO ODIN FLASH FIRMWARE, FLASH THE FIRMWARE TO HELP YOU BOOT UP. FLASH TWRP, THEN ROM, then you will have root.
If you still get the mmc_ boot after repairing it, erase the partition, and create it again. I updated the guide on top on how to do that. Haven't had a single hiccup or Mmc_failed bs since then. Good luck guys.
Please report back if it worked for you.
I will try this as soon as I can. The t-mobile store I went to was unhelpful and only wanted to sell me a new phone, even though I've only had the phone for 1 yr and 1 week. The problems started 2 weeks ago. Thank you for giving me hope.

No problem. Save everything important from your sd card and formatt it. That also helps. Try booting up your phone without your sd card. You know what mmc is? An sd card. Google it. Ive seen corrupt sd cards prevent phones from booting up.
Now I can't turn on the phone to fix like you. This morrning I'n in stock DOK2 and have all of error like you. I flash TWRP and flash cook rom, hope can fix like you. But after flash TWRP succesfull, I'm flash cook rom but the phone turn off and can't turn on. when it turn on, it go in to download mode and notice MMcC read fail. I try many time but it still like that. I use odin to load DOK2 Stock firwame but it FAIL. try many time still FAIL
now I don;t know anything need to do to save my phone. lol
What does it fix??
I tried using this application and the first partition that came up was a 61240 Mb partition. I thought it has to be my external SD card. Then i pulled out the external sd card and ran this application again. This time it did not find any partition.
Is this what its suppose to do? If not can you post a screenshot of your partition list.
Thanks

After flashing TWRP AND THE COOKED ROM, TURN OFF THE PHONE. TAKE THE BATTERY OUT....SIM CARD OUT...TAKE THE SD CARD OUT AND THE S PEN PUT.
THEN WITH ALL THAT OUT, PRESS AND HOLD POWER FOR 20 SECONDS. THEN TRY TURNING ON THE PHONE. HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND IT TURNED ON AFTER A FEW TRIES.
U may need tp try to do that a few times until you get it to power on.
This is Kinda confusing, we are talking about the INTERNAL STORAGE here, Right? If so, How on earth an App can Format the Internal Storage while its being used obviously by the OS itself? and How can it NOT erase any Media files? It seems very unrealistic approach? unless we boot the system using external boot device then wipe the affected partition, think "Ultimate Boot CD" or "Hiren" for Windows.
What you are saying is like this: Boot Windows laptop/Desktop normally, then Format C: from within Windows !!!
I know you mentioned REPAIR PARTITION, that would/might be OKAY, but to Re-Create the Partition of the MMC (Internal Storage), this sounds crazy, and not even doable.
Please Shed some more lights into this !
It does not fix internal SD

If you take out the external SD card, the app does not detect any partition. So this means that we are never fixing the internal memory, just the external one.

I was wondering, could this issue be related to eMMC like they had on earlier galaxy series. These symptoms are pretty much similar.
