Introduction
Removing the LG 'Software Update' function from your phone will give you back 20MB or more of RAM. This app runs all the time and restarts if it's killed. The thing is, if you're running a custom ROM this function will do little for you. It may notify you of an update but no updates will install over the top of your custom rom. And you get all your update notifications from here right?
However, simply removing the application package (OmaDmclient.apk) causes a problem with Settings. If the client app is removed the Settings | About Phone menu force closes. You save the 20MB RAM but you have an annoying consequence.
Removing this function provides a ~6% memory boost, a slight reduction in data use and an unquantifiable saving of CPU cycles.
Details
The relevant code is in Settings.apk, in factory ROM V10a (only some variants?) the OTA code is not active but simply taking the entire Settings.apk from V10a does not work on V10b/c. So what I did to address this:
Reverse engineered Settings.apk from V10a and V10b/c
Extracted code from V10a (java/com/android/settings/DeviceInfoSettings)
Inserted said code into V10b/c, replacing OTA code
Recompiled Settings.apk minus OTA code
Only LG code is included, none of mine, I've just ported it from one version to the next
And this allows the OTA client app to be removed without any negative consequences.
Compatibility
This is compatible with the LG Optimus 2x only, it will probably break something on the G2x variant.
This mod is not compatible with CyanogenMod for the Optimus 2x (it is unnecessary)

No problem.
It will be 372 with 20MB additional available inside this. So you have the same total RAM but you will be using ~20MB less of it.
Not 392 sorry.
actually why we just got 372 ram while the spec is 512 mb? wheres the rest?
back to the topic, is it u mean paul's rom cant use this apk?

Thanks
tested on fr8, it works.
Tested on FR12 - Looks good, no fc
Works like charm.
Should be included in Custom ROM´s
MoDaCo FR12 Fear Edition 5.0 working fine!
Thanks for testing, first post updated
Nice one guys, thanks for testing and feedback. I've run out of "Thanks" for the day so I'll have to catch up later...
First post updated with update.zip and details for ROM chefs. If you're using a custom ROM, point this out to them, it's free!
Argh, sorry for the noobishness of this, but how do you remount /system/ to be r/w?
Works fine on TK-ROM v0.5.7
Thanks alot!

But there's an update.zip in the first post now if you like
Thanks - for some reason, "adb remount" didn't work when I first got the phone, so I didn't bother trying again
Worked like a charm! Thanks!
Only thing I noticed was that 3G data seemed to have been broken after reboot, but I cleared Market data and cycled Airplane mode and all is well now.
Am using a RomKitchen 1.6 build with cpasjuste's kernel.
thank you so much!

I really do not know, that us just how it was in the galaxy s i9000 forums, if you want you can try it without that and reply back if it works or not.
Okay, perhaps a stupid question from someone who hasn't used a gingerbread ROM yet. What the heck are the "rainbows" that we're talking about?
Rainbows is when the screen totally ****s up looks like tv noise and some colors inbetween
has anyone tried this yet?

well i flashed it without using the odin and it booted but everything is loop force closing so i cant do anything
edit: just realized that u forgot to wipe the caches
edit 2:couldnt reboot in to recovery so i just odin'd and am now in the process of flashing. will post in a few minutes the results
EDIT 3: following the OP is the best way to flash this rom. it booted perfectly with the rainbows in about 2 minutes. Swype needs to be changed to a version that works for the vibrant. Haptic Doesn't work on Home button either. the volume doesnt seem to be as loud as it should either
EDIT 4: everything seems to be working so far. im going to see how this rom fares with the EDT OC kernels used for Asgard instead of the Lidroid kernel in the morning

EDT can speak for themselves, but I think their intention is to not be posted for download on XDA. To my understanding they don't care what one individual does with their work to be used strictly on someone's own personal phone mixed with other roms or anything else you want to do on your phone.
But they're clear that they don't want their stuff distributed via others on XDA.
Not trying to troll, just trying to make sure people aren't scared to use in general the good work EDT puts out, although a post already mentions that the kernel they tried from EDT had some compatability issues with this rom.
Re: rainbows. I don't recommend being intimidated to flash a rom because it has rainbows. This is what it means, when it boots up instead of some animations you'll get a static screen that doesn't show any of what should currently be showing on the screen. You don't really need to see the screen while booting anyways so that isn't a big deal.
What you do need to understand is that you wont be able to see recovery mode because you'll just see a rainbow until you hard reboot the phone so that it starts up normal. There are two ways to address the lack of recovery - just don't worry about it and use ODIN when you want to leave this rom, or if you need recovery then use a work around. To work around it either flash a different kernel to access recovery or use something like screencast to see your phone's screen on your computer. You'll have to do some reading before you understand how to do these work arounds but at least they're there.

Use baksmali and smali to decompile it and then do what he says.
I use ubuntu for that
I get the android.policy.jar and open it, then i drag classes.dex to the desktop
I go to terminal, cd /home/coldflid/Desktop (cuz it's there were i have classes.dex and baksmali and smali)
then enter ( i use baksmali/smali 1.2.5, but if you use another version, change the name for the one you use)
java -jar baksmali-1.2.5.jar classes.dex -o androidpolicy
Then a folder called androidpolicy will be created with classes.dex decompiled
Modify any files you need to mod and then in the same terminal
java -jar smali-1.2.5.jar androidpolicy
an out.dex will be created, rename it to classes.dex and drag it onto android.policy.jar, overwrite the old classes.dex
Good luck

haha okay. imma remove any mention of them from the post
I've been running the rom for about 16 hours and have experienced no hiccups. It's really fast and stable. Vlingo works great as well as the sgs2 lockscreen.
there are only 3 bugs in the entire rom. GPS of course, no haptic on home, and the CWM Tweaks app doesn't work. there's no percentage battery mod either.
p.s. for those that care the Quadrant score on 3 consecutive runs were 971, 1016, & 1027.
How the hell did I miss this?
Looks great Ali, gonna try it out when I have the time.

@Ali1276; Im going to fix the haptic feedback. Give me a little bit and I will post it up the jar file for ya'll.

I want to create my own custom rom. Can someone please tell me how flashable rom zip file is created ? Is it possible to convert cwm backup files into flashable zip file ? Theres kitchen for galaxy ace and s ii. I searched kitchen for note but found nothing.
I too am interested in building Custom ROM
i was able to edit add remove files in compiled zip without removing signatures etc.
BUT i need a guide or something like it to learn it perfectly
Plz if any1 is reading this HELP US OUT
The way I do it is take a stock rom and open it using android kitchen. Then I take the applications and use different programs like paint etc to make it my own. Then I repackage the rom and flash it. You can also download different launchers and dialer and apps like that and put those in the rom.

Your welcome, its how i learnt and ya can cook yourself a rom in about 6 hours, then spend time tweaking it and trying more advanced stuff as well as debugging
This ROM wouldn't be possible without:
- First and foremost DAGr8's Hybrid ROM
- Dakix's Zeta Rom for GTAB 7.7
- tonyking123 Classic_ROM_v1 and associated Mods
IMPORTANT - As requested - I have attached the systemui.apk file that is at the core of this to this post - you can extract it from zip and place it in system/app on your Android 4.0.4 touchwiz ROM using android commander or via adb push. Ensure you change the SystemUI.apk file permissions to 644 (rw r r) BEFORE REBOOTING.
(Doubt it will work correctly on anything else 4.0.3 etc but you can try)
Also Be sure to change dpi to 213 to enable tablet mode after copying systemui to system/appp to enable tablet mode.
This file must NOT BE FLASHED.
ROM flashing info removed - when I get moment I will build a ROM around this and post it here. Please don't hold your breath as I have a lot of life commitments so I can't provide an ETA... Sorry.
Good Stuff
--------------
- uses AOSP version of Email, Calendar, Browser, Messaging (SMS), Play Music
- Features SMemo that works well at 213DPI
- Full hw video acceleration as it's touchwiz
- No strange GPS Anomalies
ROM Anomalies
-----------------------
- Displays 4G instead of 3G HSPA
- Battery seems to drain a little fast
- USB Switcher doesn't work and results in FC when trying to mount internal and ext SD card
- Other anomalies possible due to hybrid nature please report back and I will look into them.
Notes
----------
- AOSP Email and Exchange Email now working
Please note I am still working on this rom and hope to add the following in the future:
- AOSP dialer and contacts
- AOSP Exchange email
Reserved
This is reserved

Is there something special with Classic ROM that facilitate tablet mode ? Could we have instead just the components (systemUI I guess at least) that would work with any 4.0.4 stock ROM ? Also, I'm fine with AOSP apps, but does S-apps work too, especially stock camera & FM radio ?

Hi Guys,
I'm sorry the installation sounds so complicated...
With my installation instructions I was careful to ensure the end result would be exactly what I have on my Note as this is not a fully cooked ROM it is just a cwm restore.
I am also aware that people may be running different kernels and different versions of CWM. In light of the emmc/hard brick issues I just wanted to ensure the safest transition from whatever you're running to what I'm running.
I also added some AOSP features (Unfortunately the AOSP exchange email doesn't work....) currently working on this.
I will extract the System UI component only which comes from directly from DAGr8's Hybrid ROM and post it here if it helps.
Please note that the TW Dialer, TW Contacts and Mount Mass Storage dialog FCs with just the System UI component.
@qazzi76 : first of all, thanks for sharing your work.
I don't know if it's safe to restore from Classic ROM, that's why I think people (including) are a bit reluctant in following the procedure...but I guess eventually there will be a more "standard" way of installing your ROM. The benefit of installing only the components you used to make it work is that everybody could use their preferred base ROM... Or maybe your plan is to build your own ROM and keeping it up to date.
Could you tell me if you tried FM Radio and stock S-Camera, and if it works ?
Funny thing is I think I tried to replace SystemUI with the Hybrid from i717, but I still couldn't get notification bar...so I guess I messed up somewhere.
Again, thanks for sharing your work, it's been a long time I've been waiting for this, unfortunately I go on vacation tomorrow so I won't be able to use it before a few weeks.

Hi KSauzeRK,
Yes I have now included the systemUI.apk on my first post.
Also Yes, S-Memo is modded (Not by me - can't find that developer to credit him/her) and works perfectly at 213 dpi.
Yes S-apps, stock camera and FM radio function perfectly.
Ok I've managed to resolve the AOSP exchange email issue - All working now.
I will add the relevant files to the first post when I get a moment.
This is not visual mod or theming and so posted in Android Development section.
As we all are aware there is memory leak issue with JB Roms (may not be experienced in some case), so I decided to play with framework jars and mod them to optimize RAM management.
I had used Advanced Task Killer on JB Rom and problems became grave, I needed to restart device after every hour.
So freeing the RAM in that way didn't work at all.
So, I decided to try reverse and let maximum multitasking take place (ofcourse, with optimal RAM free for launching new activities)
This can be done customizing ADJ parameters.
ICS or JB doesn't read ADJ values from build.prop or local.prop - so they are hardcoded into services.jar!
Moreover, after patching the services.jar for OOM priority... kernel overrides few needed parameters and even init.d wont help in such case.
So, I have created APK file which will do all the dirty work for you

Ninja Mode features:
Maximum Overdrive:
As mentioned earlier, it's optimal usage of RAM for maximum multitasking intended to control memory leak.
The ROM experience will get much snappier than before even with too many apps!!
Optimized Framework:
The framework of the ROM is now PNG optimized. This will increase performance as load time should decline.
Fastest ZipAlign:
The normal zipalign option in ROM is slow as it zipaligns all apps everytime.
The method used here is different and it checks new apps if available and zipaligns!
Database Optimization:
The database files are reindexed and vaccumed. This may fasten your overall app experience.
3G Booster:
Lot's of tweak for data connection!
SdCard Read Ahead value boost
Dalvik Heap Size limit increased
Least of ads in any app (latest 'hosts')
... and many other minor tweaks...
Caution:
This mod is only for BlackCNA and is under testing.
First flash the CWM and then install the app manually.
First reboot will take little longer time as it will zipalign all apks and fix permissions.
Using this app on other ROM is not recommended as framework needed to be patched.
To uninstall this mod, uninstall the app and you will need to flash the ROM again (without wipe will do.)
Installation:
Make sure you are on BlackCNA v1.2 ROM
Flash the base via CWM and reboot.
Install the "Ninja Mode" apk manually and activate it!
Reboot one time...
Planned updates:
Customizable tweaks
Better UI for APK (This is my first app with code from scratch!! :silly
Support for other ROMS ?
Remember, this mode is under TEST and under development!

You can test that for me if I build one.
Send me framework-res.apk and services.jar from his latest build.
We can have a test drive.
EDIT: And even build.prop
2. Flash via CWM and reboot means the recovery right? I dont quite get it there ...

OK that one flashed fine I'll install the apk, reboot and will report back . Thanks
After installing the apk, and clicking on the "Activate Ninjutsu" button, I'm getting the following error - " Ninja mode not correctly installed. Press back to exit". Running Black CNA v1.2.
Edit: Sorry, I had forgotten to flash the base! Fixed Now!
