I recently got a Note running stock ICS 4.03, not rooted, nothing. I've been trying to wrap my head around the brick bug thing ever since I got it. I'm still a bit scared about flashing a new ROM though.
Should I wait for the official 4.1.2 update? Will it fix the brick bug so it will be safe to flash anything again? Have devs been able to glean that from the existing 4.1.2 leaks and official releases (Poland?)?
Or will I have to move to a safe kernel (Philz?) manually anyway, no matter if I wait for the 4.1.2 update first?
Thanks so much!
This place is really good. You get guidance, tutorials, instant help. (when I think of instant help, one name comes to mind nokiamodeln91, there are several guys like him here). But spoon feeding is not encouraged. You are asking several questions with multiple if and buts. Answer may run into pages. You want to fire the rifle from others shoulder.
It's your phone and your choices. Definitely there are elements of risk when you do something different. Try out whatever you like. Read carefully before doing.

We wont know if its safe until kernel and sources are interpreted by the pros, there is a main brickbugthread in general watch that one for the answers
Go to app stpre downlod brickbugapp, it wil tell u if ur device is prone to this flaw.
If yes then its something to worry about and its only if u want to flash custom roms. If u want to keep stock then its ok even if u have the bug.
Search and find how to root ur device, for me to make the process easy, i install the "exynos abuse" app from play store , it will root ur device just in a single click
Then install root checker app, again from play store to see if ur device is rooted.
Then install the rom manager and install the cwm recovery through it.
Then search the thread of philz safe kerne. And follow procedures to flash it.
Ur device is safe now.

Hi all, just wondering if anybody is feeling helpfull and explaing the easiest rooting method for my galaxy note.
I have an unlocked note on 2.3.6 latest gingerbread.
Total noob with android and finding it a little confusing after coming from apple. I jailbroke my i4 but this is alot different no click and done lol.
My main reason is so i can perform full backups including app data, and also installing a few apps like airplayit.
Been having a read but my head is swiming.
Using XDA Premium (GT-N7000)
Hi mate. I was in the same boat as you.
Even after being into rooting my Androids since the G1 days.
This is my first Samsung.
Anyway. Follow the "how to root with cwm and everything in one place thread"....or something like that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
I see they've moved the non rootable roms to post 4.
It depends which version you have add to what you need to do.
Download Odin and flash a completely stock GB rom as the one I had LA6 I think was unrootable .
Then I just flashed paranoid Android loved it ever since.
Follow the instructions on that thread and you should be fine.
Doing that though ill loose everything?, spent weeks setting up
Using XDA Premium (GT-N7000)
Hi,
I would read, read, read & read more if you have a head that is swimming with all the information.
Read this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1702214
among hundreds of others.
I managed to kill one of my notes & didn't consider myself a noob but the brick bug got me.
Yes when you install new roms there is a lot of setting up to re-do hence backups are important & time time saving BUT read about the brick/eMMC erase problem and hold out until the situation has been resolved, otherwise all you will have is a very expensive paper weight.
Yeah ill hang on. Not desperate to get it done and also dont have the time.
Using XDA Premium (GT-N7000)
if you want your GB rooted, just flash a non-wipe pre-rooted ROM from bodivas thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1535025
I did the same and worked for me
What i did was flashed speedmod kernel k2-12.tar through odin and my rom was rooted with cwm and from there i flashed abyss 4.2. By doing this i got yellow triangle which i got rid of by installing ics rom and triangle away app
what does non wipe mean?
Using XDA Premium (GT-N7000)
Means it will install on top of your current rom without resetting all youre data and apps.
please hit thanks if i helped
ok so your saying i can flash a prerooted rom of the same type, over my current and hopefully end up with no setting up?
Using XDA Premium (GT-N7000)
Hi everyone
Recently i got my Galaxy Note, but i would like to root it only. to gain access to apps like droidwall, adblocker and other more apps. i wonder does rooting a Note has any risk ? like bricking it or similar problem like this ?
Is it easy to root a Note ?
Why am i asking this ? because my brother said that there's a risk rooting Note. i used to owned a Galaxy Tab GT P 1000 and i rooted it easily without risk or problems that was a year ago. but now my tab died due to some user here named cx5 posted misleading guide to flash latest ICS or JB caused my tab unable to power on anymore.
If you are on ics rom, then u are on an unsafe kernel.Wiping or flashing on stock ics kernel will brick your phone
So as soon as u root your phone,u need to flash a safe kernel. If u are on ics,u can simply flash philz kernel to root your phone and its a safe kernel
Here is a guide to root your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
1A method of the above mentioned thread is the best. There is no risk involved of you do everything by the book.

Yeah i am using ICS now android version 4.0.4. Does rooting it have any risk of bricking it ? what do you mean by unsafe kernel ?
stock ics kernels have a bug that has a mmc erase command enabled that could delete critical files and render your phone useless. so comes the need of custom kernels which the devs here disabled this command.
wipe using stock kernels is unsafe

Ima be blunt with you man. I can tell by the way you replied to what these guys have told you, you probably lack the reading skills or attentiveness to do something like this. Well this is my second time doing rooting on a android phone. hopefully there's no problems doing it. I'm not sure whether should i flash a custom roms as i am afraid since there's a risk bricking it. it's my first time flashing custom roms. I just found out some sort of bug that exist on stock ICS at Note that makes the phone bricked if flashing other roms/deleting the current OS. hmm i wonder does the bug affect factory reset too ?
Actually this would have been the second time flashing a android phone if i did not follow misleading guide posted by some user here causing my tab to be bricked.
I'm still not sure why my brother said there's a risk of bricking when trying root a note.
Is it safe to stay rooted on stock OS ?
Is it possible to set permanent landscape mode on note ?
Your answers are in the stickies.
Summary of 2 ways to destroy your phone:
1) Factory reset/wipes on stock ICS kernels (Samsung default).
2) Rooting via cwm.zip through temp recovery

I posted this question back in early october and no correct answers were given and thread was deleted. so here it goes again. I updated from stock hc to official stock ics through kies i guess? whichever is through the settings - check for updates on the tab. i then asked how to root to jb and people tried telling me one way and then others said no dont do it that way since im running stock official ics. i dont know what odin is, i dont know what flashing is and i dont know what kernels are. i would please like simple simple step by step instructions on how to root to the latest AOKP jb from official ics. i am sorry for the edginess but im just so frustrated i bought this tab and paid 330 for it in sept and I wish I would have waited. this tab is just to slow and id like the extra speed and features from jb as well as an option to oc the processor. $70 more and two months of waiting i could have got the nexus 10 .. oh and i have the wifi only 7310. PLEASE HELP!!
Read the stickies, they'll tell you what to do.

Everyone who knows all tnis stuff post things assuming that everyone knows all the jargon, i am a tech noob. Debating on selling this thing if i cant get jb. what do you think a 32 gb 7310 only two months old aind in mint condition with a nice moto $40 leather case could fetch? lol again sorry for soundimg like an ass im just frustrated
I have a tab i957. It wasn't the easiest to get jb on. Which tab do you have?
The first thing you need is Odin. Google Odin 3 ver 1.85.
Then you'll need to flash a recovery, either twrp or clock work mod, make sure it's specific to the tab you have. you flash it with Odin
Then you'll need to down load a jb Rom on to your device, again make sure it's for your device. Then you flash it through the recovery.
The stickies will have more specific info. There are no simple steps. You have to learn by reading and trying.

Not to flash the Rom, only to get clockwork or twrp recovery on the device. The Rom is flashed thru the recovery.

Hello guys I just sold my 4S and bought this Note 1 , anyway im new to android flashing and this stuff , ive heard that its way different than iOS restoring which is really easy and simple. Right now i got a few questions , If i missed a step or did something wrong it'll render my device unusable ofcourse , but will it be unrecoverable ? Thats the first thing. Second thing is that is it recommended that i install custom roms? right now i need one's with the Water Ripple effects on lockscreens , or if you can just tell me how to install the effect without custom rom's that'll be helpful because i want to flash official 4.1.2 jelly bean first and then the lockscreen effect. Im just new to the Android stuff and i dont know where to start Same feeling back in 2008 when i bought my first iPhone and got confused n' all

If you just install stock official 4.1.2 rom via odin, it should come with the ripple effect.
Or if the update is already available in your country, you can just update it to the latest official rom via kies.

You'll notice that all of the download links are zip files.
You just need to extract the zip file until you find the .tar file.
Get 7-zip if you don't already have an archive reader.

Yep, there's a way to install roms without PC, using mobile Odin, but before that you should have your phone been rooted first.

Wait a few minutes. Let me get on my PC and I'll give you step-by-step instructions.
Now, do this:
Since you're scared, we'll do this the safest way possible
1.)Download a stock GB rom from here.(You can always come back to this ROM if you run into any trouble).Flash it via PC Odin.
2.)Wipe data and cache from recovery (Press Vol Up+Power+Home when phone is off in order to boot to recovery)
3.)Download stock JB rom from here.Flash it via PC Odin.
OR
1.)Update using Kies.

Im following this method right now , so i just download Gingerbread (550+mb i think?) and install via odin and then i have gingerbread? No additional steps ? No chance of loops/errors/bricks or anything or installing additional kernels like some people said cause that's whats confusing me ... i dont really want any custom kernal i want jelly bean stock ... if anybody could guide me through skype i'd be thankful
EDIT: Iv'e read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633938 thread carefully and it says that if you wipe using Settings you will get eMMC bug , i was on 4.0.4 and wiped but it booted normally without any problems (No loops No Restarting on its own No lags) and it was smooth , even though that app from playstore says my chip is insane .. Somebody explain this :S ?

It may brick. Not definite that it will brick. Still, better safe than sorry. Never wipe on stock ICS kernel!

updating or changing ROM was easy method but deadly also, wrong move will come to brick fone. if u really hav thought it well, juz follow any instruction on xda regarding i9000 after confirming ur device version, backed up baseband, build number n etc involve.
n now u ll need cwm for flashing. find cwm to gain access to recovery n thats where u gonna flash ur custom ROM, but read a lot before doing it as here in Q & A section, many success, also failure posted here, so be sure to read first mate
