[SOLVED]Stock ICS vs Custom ROM - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a gingerbread G.Note (the international version) since 6 month and I need to install ICS to install some applications. but I read that Stock ICS either 4.0.3 or the 4.0.4 are not safe as they may cause damage when simply resetting to factory settings or when doing other things.
I read about many custom ROMs but can't decide which is better because ROM fans always write positive review but also I found many people with negative feedback on the same ROMs.
I am not a game freak. so speed is not very important to me. I just need stable and bug free software because I am a busy person and I have no time for installing new ROMs every week plus I read that flashing ROM after another is a great way to damage your phone.
Any Suggestions ??

Download a stock Rom ICS and root it with PhilZ Kernel. Nothing else.
After that your are not in danger or the brick bug anymore and you have all ICS features you need.

Thank you for replying

just to be sure that I understood.
First I will root my stock GB and Install stock ICS like it's said here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Second I will root the stock kernel and install safe kernel like it's said here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191

Any more suggestions
I'll be very thankful if there's more suggestions.

You dont need root GB to flash stock ICS. Just follow the steps in first link how to flash ICS via PC odin.
Download all necessary drivers, pc odin etc... install these, reboot pc.
After that, download ICS rom which you want, charge your battery.
Open PC Odin, reboot phone into download mode, connect usb cable to phone, check in odin (check box must turn yellow), place rom files into odin, then flash. I wrote these steps but it is all described in detail, in the first link, so follow it
When it boots into ICS, when all is finish, download philZ kernel from second link (depends which kernel, considering which version of rom you have now), place your kernel.zip in internal sd card
Reboot phone into recovery mode, follow steps written in post #3 from Philz kernel thread.
Which means, flash philz kernel from stock recovery, just reboot your phone and thats it.
Now you are rooted, and safe from brickbug :good:
But be aware that your apps will gone (not pictures and stuff from interal sd, but to be sure, backup your important files to pc), and your warraty if you have one will be void.
Good luck, if you have question, and you are not sure what you need to do, better ask here, before going into trouble, somebody will respond...

OK I'll try this way

Re: [Q] Stock ICS vs Custom ROM
I am on stock ics rom with stock kernel. My device has the 0x9 brick bug thing. I tried everything to get my device brick because its still in warrenty. But fortunately or unfortunately didnt got it bricked. So i am still not sure what advice to give u. I think u should go for a philz kernel if u feel unsafe. But being deprived of ics despite ics being on this device for half a year now is not wise.
Make the most of ur device rather than being afraid. Brick bug is not ur fault its samsungs fault, so u can always take the device to them and can yell at them.
For me i want my device to get brick so i can take it back to samsung and if they didnt own it. I would take them to the court. People make money from that. I know a lawyer who always welcome such suits with a % share.

Re: [Q] Stock ICS vs Custom ROM
@quazibasit. If you want to brick your note, download Cwm.zip from rootgalaxynote.com or youtube, flash it in stock recovery from extSdCard and do /wipe data factory reset with it. It a temp recovery and will disappear on next boot so Samsung won't know what you did.
Let us know if it bricks on first wipe.

Everything is perfect
Everything went perfect.
I have rooted ICS 4.0.4 now with philz kernel.
Thank you all for your help.

I rooted my device downloaded rom manager flashed cwm, give my phone a complete wip and rebooted. It deleted all the data and my device was like a fresh decice. But didnt find anything that explains the brick bug. Some OPs said that its not necessary that it happens when one wipes the data. It can happen anytime even file deleting a large file. But fortunately i didnt experience such thing. So i am no more scared of this bug.
I even flashed slimbeans on my stock ics with stock kernel, but didnt find any bricking, yes it went into bootloop once, but on wiping data it was all ok.
Sorry folks wont advice any of u to do this, it was just experiment which ended smoothly.

since you bricked once, you must have learned something. Take care of that. Then Plan your work. Decide which custom rom you want to flash. Follow one safe method such as dr.ketan guide. Do not follow two safe methods. My suggestion is downgrade to official stock of GB of your country (by PC Odin). See that your UPS got a backup of 15 miutes. In recovery mode do 3 wipes. flash abyss kernel, Thru CWM flash SU Installer. Install SuperSU.Check phone boots properly. Check whether your phone fully rooted by root checker Pro.Then thru CWM, flash KD2.0 and thenS3 addon and kernel speedmod #3.3 (all in one shot). Check phone reboots normally. Install triangle away by chainfire. Before proceeding-Copy all necessary files in external micro SD. Pls see USB debugging is on. Remove SIM.Warning: Double check this with pros cause I am a noob.
Thx a lot for your kind answer but I didn't understand "your ups backup 15 min? Can u explain it?

while flashing stock rom thru PC Odin, your computer should not go down and see no loose cable connection. Also whenever you work on rooting job, be sure your phone is fully charged.

He asked for help regarding rooting bro and not installling the KingDroid ROM.Anyways, here's how I would go about it
1-->Enable usb debugging in settings.
2-->Download a directly rootable stock GB rom(of your country) from dr.Ketan's thread and flash and root it following dr.Ketan's guide.(If you get bootloop after flashing stock GB rom then wipe data using stock android recovery)
3-->Reboot into recovery at least once even if you don't actually plan to do anything yet.(Optional)
4-->Flash a ROM like CM9 for stock AOSP and because CM9 kernel doesn't have the brickbug in it ( I think speedmod kernel doesn't have it either but for more info check the warning thread in the dev section and the individual kernel threads)
5-->If you ever flash a stock kernel NEVER WIPE DATA from recovery or in the phone settings.Ask for more info before flashing anything new that requires wipe.
There are other ways too but I use this one and have never had problems.
If you have any questions ASK before doing anything
---------- Post added at 06:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:56 PM ----------
It's safe to wipe from CM9, speedmod and franco kernels.
Stay away from wiping in ICS stock kernels unless you want a 5.3" paperweight

Wht i understand is you want to flash a custom ICS rom on your note.
First of all..
Get root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Stick with the instructions.
After doing this you will have root+cwm installed on your lovely note.
Now download Abyss 4.2 from here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362424
Now download custom ics rom from android development section and put it in your phone sd card or external card.
Reboot into recovery.
Flash abyss 4.2
Go to advanced and reboot recovery.
Now you have abyss redpill recovery or touch cwm.
Do all 3 wipes. Cache, Dalvik and data.
Flash rom
Reboot system

Criskelo ICS v9 trouble
Hi,
I installed criskelo v9 on my phone just now..and titanium backup doesnt work..it says i do not have root permissions
now all my apps are on it and the phone is pretty pointless without it..
I tried installing abyssnote and franco kernel just to see if it works but the update gets stuck at "installing packages" and then reboots to system to the earlier settings..
the cwm i have right now is also not the touch version and my kernel is cf-root so i do not know if i should be reflashing criskelo directly on this to check for any difference..
PLease tell me what i need to do..I am lost and could not find anything after an hour of googling

I followed the instructions to the T.. Root permissions didnt happen..Here's what i did..
1. Downloaded CWM and busybox and placed them where he said
2. Booted into recovery and installed CWM
After this the UI didnt change to the touch UI as he indicated but was still the button UI
3. ANyway went ahead and installed busybox from the zip
Here the progress was stuck at "unmounting system" till the phone reboot itself to the system..And i still dont have root permissions as per titanium..
Where did i go wrong?

Hi, what i really want is root permission so i can use criskelo as my ROM..I was using gb (checkrom v6 with abyss) till now and thought of upgrading to ICS...if i get root permissions i can restore my apps using titanium and my problem wil be solved..titanium is currently saying i dont have root permissions and not restoring my apps...
Of course i will want to change kernels too to mix and match my requirements with battery life later on...
If your desire is to just get rooted, then download the Abysskernel touch zip file* : http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/...rnel/AbyssNotekernel42CWTouchOriginalLogo.zip
Saved it in your external SD card and install it using Recovery Mode
After that, your phone should restart and check after if you have SU(Superuser) and CWM installed. If you do have it.. Rest assured your phone is already rooted.

Thats where the problem is..i have tried installing that file multiple times..it gets stuck at "installing update" and reboots into the system..
Within the phone i already have CWM (as the app) in my phone but it says it cannot work coz i need cf-root v5 or newer for it to work...can i use the LRG file as given in this forum to change the kernel?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
file name : CF-Root-SGN_XX_DBT_LRG-v5.6-CWM5 (i had chosen the LRG modem while installing criskelo v9)
Are there different kernels for ICS and GB and maybe im trying the wrong file?
Also right now all i want is the root..but i also wanna be able to rollback to gb later and try other roms as per my convenience if i dont like criskelo..so any guidance keeping that in mind for the future will b much appreciated
Thanks..

What is your current ROM now? stock DXLRG? if it is, yes you can flash that kernel on your link (using mobile odin pro). Try to check back after thru CWM if it still gives you the same message or not.
Yes, there are different kernels solely for ICS only and also solely for GB alone. Don't make a mistake in mixing a GB kernel to your ICS Rom or else your phone gets fried.

I am right now on Criskelo ICS v9..
The exact problem on my phone (id mentioned earlier too) is that its like its semi-rooted..things like cpuspy etc work..but titanium backup and moble odin dont..my main motive is to have titanium working so i can use the phone normally..
Now i see that criskelo has just launched v10.1 of the same ROM which has solved the semiroot+wifi issue..download is in progress and It wud be great to know how i can move on to that now..
Abyssnote kernel is not installing (stuck at "installing update" ) and as per my knowledge the phone isnt rooted (coz titanium backup and mobile odin dont work)..
Can i rollback to prerooted gb (i have this file: Rooted_Stock_Odex_N7000DDLB2 - nonwipe gb ROM) via PC odin to initiate the whole process again under present circumstances?
Whole process here meaning *prerooted gb+abyssnote kernel+criskelo v10.1 install*..
PS - i did all wipes while installing the present ROM (if it matters)..
Yes, you have what we call it here as a semi rooted phone. Not getting all the permissions to access system files inside. It's a good thing though that Criskelo has a new version to his ROM and that should be appropriate in installing it.
Can you rollback to pre rooted GB? Yes you can. Just pick the appropriate GB ROM. And oh by the way bud, stay clear on fully wiping your phone... Remember your walking in a thin line here when your flashing Custom ICS ROMs...
Just a heads up, that's all.
Cheers!

first, let's tackle your second question. If your on Criskelo ICS now, please under NO circumstances, YOU DO NOT FULLY WIPE your phone before going back to the pre rooted GB. There's a bug circulating around the forum and it's called the SUPER BRICK BUG. It'll fry your emMC chip (on your phone) thereby making it as a dead paper bag. There are countless of folks here already that have succumbed to the bug. Most have returned their dead phone back to Samsung Repair for an exchange on the motherboard. That is how deadly this bug can sting your phone.
So stay away from it. (It's better late than never, mind you)
on your first question,
Use PC Odin to downgrade to a pre rooted GB one. That's it.
Cheers!

@All
Thanks for the your responses
This is what i did after getting some doubts cleared over here:
I rolled back to a prerooted ODEX gb ROM..and installed rocketrom for now..gonna use it for a while and check how people are finding criskelo v10.1..Once im satisfied with that gonna go ahead with flashing it..
Thanks again :good:

HELP! First hours with Note

Hope to not disturb, today my Note arrived, so right now i got 4 hours with it. Impressions?!? You all know, is a great device.
So, since this morning i start reading and reading, but are alot of infos here, i lose some and i become confuse, so i will need some help in my order questions.
My build number is GINGERBREAD.XXLA6 (i understand users with it can easily brick the device), so here all my questions:
PS: Please post links too:
1- first step is to root and install cwm (how and link please), or i need to flash a new kernel to be sure my device will never be bricked (how and link please)?
2- after i flash custom kernel and install a new rom, i can make wipe all from custom recovery? After that danger situationto brick it will be forever gone?
3- i would like to unlock the sim network, it is working and it is safe?
4- i know about warranty, but i suppose i can allways go back to stock (i need stock kernel too or only rom?)
Dont know what to ask more, users who will read and write, please, write ALL STEPS, 1by1, from first to last, what i need to do, this phone was a big effort for me to buy it, without any jokes.
Thanks in advance!

As long as you are on GB kernel, you are safe to wipe.
1. Check my sig. for excellent rooting guide by Dr.Ketan (post #3 for LA6), it will help in installing cwmr too.
2. You can wipe on any of the safe custom ICS kernels (if you flash custom ICS rom) just do not wipe on stock ICS kernels.
3. check galaxy_S unlock in play store to unlock, I dont think it is unsafe to do it (except some carrier terms, may be)
4. Once you flash stock firmware you will be back to normal. flashing stock firmware will also change kernel to stock.
I would suggest read a lot before doing anything as flashing custom roms, kernels or modding always include some risk.

No prob, and by the way, why don't you simply flash pre-rooted GB rom (look for it in my sig.), it is already rooted and includes CWM recovery too. All you have to do is to just flash it and then flash any custom rom of your choice using cwm recovery.
Reason why I suggested flashing pre-rooted GB is that your rom seems to be non directly rootable and I think only option is to flash pre-rooted rom. (atleast as per my understanding)

Well i think this i`m doing.
Right now i download SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS (GB Pre rooted ROM)
After that, since that pre-rooted rom have root, i can install cwm right?
Then i want to install an custom kernel and ICS rom (i think ics 4.0.4 is the best option for now, 4.1.1 i suppose it have bugs, i saw they are started only) -> that i asked you what is the best kernel and rom so far (ics)
Hope i`m doing good steps here
Update your phone the official way ie go into settings/about phone/ and your phone should update to ics. Then flash notecores kernal http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749863 using odin then your good to go i personally find this rom the besthttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716088 but every1 has diffrent opinions depends wat u want.

If you choose to flash pre-rooted GB rom, then no need to install cwm separately, as it already includes cwmr, you just have to choose some custom rom and flash it using cwm recovery.
I was about to suggest you the other method of updating to stock ICS first and then rooting but it will take more time and it is of no use as your end motive is to flash custom roms

Well, i will chose the method proviced by kyleastley too, seems more easy this way.
1- I will update to stock ics
2- then flash custom kernel .tar via odin
3- root and install cwm (if the custom kernel include already, dont know)
4- install custom rom (from cwm) since i can wipe after
Is ok this way?
So many questions, sorry guys }{

Step 2 u can skip as its already done (dont know about root but definatly cmw) u wil not need root anyway as u can power down phone and reeboot into recovery via 3 button trick.
May i add step 6 install triangle away from play store as it will remove the triangle At boot as u flashed a kernal using odin.
As allways read and read again as uay already know that this phone has the brick problem but if u do everything by the book u will b ok.

That's is completely fine if you want to go this way , step 1 and 2 are okay but step 3 not required as flashing custom kernel via odin will root and install cwmr. You will get yellow triangle and custom binary count by flashing custom kernel, which can be reset using triangle away. check rooting guide in my sig, once you are on stock ICS or ask here.
Checked above post after I posted mine, seems like its getting confusing here, okay so once you are on Stock ICS you have two methods to root and install cwmr,
1. once you are on stock ICS just flash some custom kernel using odin, it will root your device and flash cwmr too, then use triangle away app to remove yellow triangle and reset binary count. (method 2 in rooting guide in my sig.)
OR
2. Once you are on stock ICS, follow method 1 in rooting guide in my sig. in this you can root using stock recovery and then can flash custom kernel using mobile odin, so no yellow triangle or custom binary count.

Good you clarify me
5% left from download and then i will flash the update to ics.
let me see if i understand, after update to ics i will flash a custom kernel via odin (this will have root and cwm too), i will restart the phone and install yellow triangle and reset binary count
then i must root using stock recovery as you say and install again a custom kernel since the yellow triangle doesnt show up anymore? or you want to say i can flash custom rom since the triangle dont show up? -> confuse!

And just want to make sure, are you downloading ICS rom or are you talking about percentage in kies?

No need to have root to flash custom kernel via odin, it will root it automatically.
Do you have Samsung drivers installed on your PC? If yes then try restarting your phone once again.

You don't have to remove yellow triangle to install custom rom, you can still do it. Traingle away is just to remove the yellow triangle and to reset binary count for warranty purpose. Yes, you can wipe now, as you are on safe kernel.
Download any custom rom, which you wish to install, put it in your SD, boot in CWMR , perform full wipe and then flash the rom .zip.

Problem wit galaxy note after change of the DPI

Hi All,
Hope I am in the good place to present my problem (i'm new in the forum and I'm just learning the "how to").
Yesterday I've rooted my Gnote (GTN7000 XXLPT - ICS just installed from OTA update). It was the paradise before i decide to instal "DPI change" ...
I set the DPI from 160 to 240 and then save + reboot ... Till that moment, my GNote stuck on the launching logo (Samsung Galaxy Note N7000).
I'm not an expert of Android (the proof ...) and I'm looking for the safest and easiest (step by step) solution to revive my GNote.
I know that XDA is an expert forum and therefore I please every of you that will see my request to help me ...
Ps: A part from the root I have applied no other manipulation on the phone (even the setup of the debuger mode).
Your kind help with this will be saving for me, given that there is no repair / after sale service available in my country.

Thank you for your reply Tibosee,
However, I wonder how I can flash the kernel (a little step by step tutorial will be welcome).
Please help with this.
Regards.
I´d recommend flashing this kernel (HydraCore) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749863
Kernel Installation
Install either through CWM or PC/Mobile ODIN in the usual manner. Wiping Cache and Dalvik Cache is unnecessary and wont make any difference. Flash only with 25% or more charge on the phone

If you had searched you would have known that you shouldn't use the app to change the DPI. Once you have reflashed a ROM or installed a new kernel, then use Rom Toolbox instead or edit the build.prop manually to change the DPI.

Dears,
Thanks a lot for all assistance with this. Google play will never lies me as long as XDA will be there !
From your various explanations I've drawn the process below (please confirm that my comprehension is correct):
1 - Download and install Mobile Odin (Please provide a link to the safest version); Dont know if Odin will see the phone since i've not activated the debuger mode when the phone parameters was accessible.
2 - Download and install Hydracore Kernel;
3 - Connect the phone on the PC and run Odin (at this step I am not sure to know what to do);
4 - Flash and enjoy (Hope I'll reach this step)
May be the procedure with CWM will be more practicable, especially in case Odin do not see the phone ... But I really not know how to handle it. That's the reason why I was asking a Step by Step assistance.
Thanks and Regards

You only use one of the two applications; Mobile Odin or PC Odin. You don't have to use them together. Since your phone doesn't boot, then I assume Mobile Odin is out of the question. I'm gonna write a quick guide to use PC Odin.
1- Download PC Odin from this link: http://ul.to/xt4607xx (you can search the forum, you will find many download links for Odin 1.85)
EDIT: Here's another link, the 1st one doesn't want to work anymore. http://k0nane.info/rom/odin-185.zip You can google "odin 1.85" and open the first link (it should be an xda forums attachment)
2- Download the standard tar file of the Hydracore 3.5 kernel from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749863
3- Open PC Odin and click on PDA and choose your kernel tar file downloaded from step 2.
4- Remove all check marks and leave only Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time CHECKED.
5- Turn your phone off and remove the battery and reinsert it.
6- Turn your phone on by pressing and holding the Power button + Menu button + Volume Down button (to get into Download mode).
7- Connect the phone to the USB cable and connect it to the computer. Odin should show a yellow box.
8- Press Start in PC Odin. The yellow box will turn green which means a successful flash.
9- Now you can wipe data safely (never wipe data using stock ICS kernel btw).
How is flashing the kernel going to solve the problem of a b0rked build.prop? Get out of here people.
The only solution to his problem is to flash a custom Rom.

Just a quick one, regardind the end of your post, you mentioned that I should not wipe a stock rom. My understanding is that stock rom = official samsung rom. Therefore it seems my rom was a stock one (GTN7000 XXLPT - rom updated from GB to ICS - OTA update), since I never change it.
Should I wathever do the wipe as mentioned in your post?

Hi Chasmodo,
I was just about to flash the Kernel of my GNote following Joey's + others advices above.
Please why do you think flashing the Kernel is not advisable? ... Do you think the phone will thereafter completely brick?
Please answer these two questions as quick as you can ... My finger is on the "red bouton" just waiting for you.
Could you also provide a link to a step by step tutorial in case the solution proposed by Joey is safe but comes unsuccessful ?
Thank you for your contribution.
Regards.
If your build.prop is corrupted/broken, flashing a new kernel won't fix it because it won't replace your build.prop.
As Chas said, the easiest fix would be to flash a custom ROM, as this will replace your build.prop.

Dave

Well, to flash a new ROM, he needs to be on a safe kernel...
And anyway, I thought wiping data = factory reset. Isn't that right? If so, then wouldn't the wipe fix his problem? I'm new to this stuff so excuse me if that's completely wrong.

Well, from what I read, most (if not all) Samsung stock ICS kernels have a bug which would corrupt the data partition when you wipe on any of them. The problem would appear when you wipe ON them, and not wipe them.

Also flashing the stock Samsung ROM would also solve the problem as it would replace the wrongly edited build.prop with the stock build.prop.
Assuming you have the stock ROM downloaded on your PC, flash it using PC ODIN as explained in an earlier post.
Everything downloading, installing and rooting the stock ROMs is explained here by Dr Ketan
Once that is done, you can root your stock ROM and install mobile odin. You can then flash any custom kernel which is safe and has the brick bug covered. Factory wipe using a safe custom kernel wont brick your phone then.
I am not sure if flashing a safe custom kernel and doing a factory reset would replace the faulty build.prop file with a stock one directly. Chasmodo could explain more....
Flashing a stock ROM would surely replace everything with stock. So you have a clean stock state from which you can play around (rooting, custom kernels/ROMS, etc)

Xda is full of instructions on how to use odin search it. Flashing a kernel won't fix your problem. Best to do as previously advised and flash a new rom, stock or custom either will do
AND DON'T PANIC take it slow and don't do anything before you understand the process your phone is currently in no danger what so ever but a faulty flash can definitely brick it

I read in Dr Ketan tutorial the following:
Don't wipe anything from stock ICS recovery
Don't factory reset/Hard reset on stock ICS.
Don't flash any Wipe version of ICS ROM
Yesterday, after my GNote freezed on the "Samsung Galaxy Note N7000" image I tried to hard reset by wiping user data via ICS recovery (just after rooting the phone with CWM.
Does it means that my GNote is now bricked?
If it is the case shoud I anyway continue to follow Dr. Ketan tutorial to flash my GNote with a stock rom?

Very sorry to say buddy, your Note most likely is bricked. I hope I am wrong.
Try installing a stock ROM, preferrably Ginger Bread ROM via PC ODIN. If it fails, most likely, at FactoryFS write, then your phone is surely bricked.
Let us know how it goes, we can guide you further accordingly.

see if you can still go to download mode and reflash a stock GB on your device. If it's successful then your good to go... if not, then look for the thread here to revive a brick phone.. note down the errors your getting (if there are any errors at all) when your going to reflash it again.

[Q] weird bug. need expert advice + solution

Today I tried to update my phone to a new custom rom.
I followed the instructions of the threads and tried to get it to work.
Of course it didn't work or else I wouldn't be here right now asking for help.
Here's the current situation.
I am able to boot into download mode + recovery mode and also boot into cwmr and install a different kernel.
I used pc odin to install it each time and it does pass and the rom (i've tried installing a gingerbread rom so that I can try everything again) does install.
the problem is that it is currently stuck in a boot loop at the "Samsung galaxy note gt-N7000" screen.
I have looked up dr.ketan's posts and tried some too.
currently i am booting abyss note kernel 42cwt touch original. (I know for sure it is a workable kernel because I've been using it this whole time.
here's what i've done. please tell me what i've done wrong and the possible ways to reverse it.
1. backed up everything
2. went into recovery
3. factory reset/cache clear
4. use pc odin to install new kernel (since I was looking into switching to another kernel anyways)
5. use pc odin again to install gingerbread rom (I do get the green light saying it did get installed
6. phone auto reboots
7. it gets stuck at the boot loop like i have mentioned above
i will try to attach a few pictures of my note as soon as I can so you can see what's going on with it.
What rom is there on the phone now ? if you boot into recovery .. what recovery do you get now ? CWM or stock ardroid 3e recovery ?

Right now it reboots to 3e recovery.
The rom that I tried to inject to it is currently a the stock gingerbread rom from dr. Ketans thread.
The rom that I had on it is the official ics rom for the hk region.
The rom that I wanted to inject to it was a custom jb rom that uses hydracore as a kernel.
Thanks!!

I am able to flash to different kernels and get in and out of different recovers and such, but ya...still no luck with running a rom.
Well I am not sure but I soft bricked my phone when I tried that Abyss Kernel. In my view Hydracore is safe. Philz is super safe.
Flash ICS which matches your region using Odin. If phone boots flash Philz, If not, then be ready to read a lot of stuff or get phone repaired.

the only thing i have...
Hey guys. my note seems to have cooperated and allowed me to flash a new rom and also a new kernel. Here's the catch though, now it's stuck in the samsung logo and won't boot beyond that. Any suggestions of what to do? I am continually searching on the forums to find a solution.
At least I'm happy to know it's not a brick that can't be fixed.
Thanks nokiamodeIn91 for your help so far. I really appreciate it.
which rom did you flash and which kernel? how?
He spent a lot of time helping you. Be sure to hit thanks button

I currently flashed the abyss note kernel 42 cw touch and I downloaded an old gb rom from sammobile .
Here's what I did.
1. Put my phone into download mode
2. Run as admin on PC Odin
3. Selected the Abyss kernel then flashed it.
4. Boot into the cmw, wiped cache then booted the phone into download mode again.
5. Then I installed the old GB Rom on to my phone and restarted it.
6. Phone starts, loads past the GT-N7000 logo and goes into the samsung boot logo.
7. Phone repeats the animation of the samsung logo a time or two then restarts on its own. This loops until the phone is completely drained. I know that the rom works because that was the rom that I used to root my phone. I definitely don't mind downloading another rom if I have to.
my current goal, if we can fix this, is to quickly just update to the official jb rom for n7000 and not play around with the rooting and such until I have even more time to learn more.
at least I know for sure my phone isn't hardbricked, I would imagine I have either missed a step or something that caused the problem.
I have read through the forum and I did come across one post talking about checking my phone's partition and such.
I got to be honest, I'm really not technically skilled enough at this point in time to dare to mess around with that type of thing yet especially with so much coding to make sense of it. (I know this is kind of dumb to say especially when I rooted my phone and screwed up this bad). More importantly, I don't even know for sure if I need to do a partition or not.
Please let me know what I did wrong and how I can fix it.
I got a question though (out of curiosity), how come there's no toolkit for the n7000 like the S3 and also the note 2???
this is the name of the old gb rom that I tried flashing.
N7000ZSKJ6_N7000OZSKJ6_N7000XXKJ6_HOME.tar
I actually have tried several other roms as well (from GB-JB, official and custom) and all of them so far has gotten to the samsung boot logo
I have read on the forums to try using Philz-cwm 6 kernel but I don't know if it'd solve my problem.
let me show you one of the threads I have read, if I dived into the wrong material let me know and I won't consider using it (or learn how to use it) for my current situation

like I was saying before, I really have no experience in coding so all the things that really made near no sense to me. I understand the basic concept of what its trying to do it's just seems like a very unsafe method for me to try especially when I lack the necessary knowledge in this area of expertise.
did you flash the GB rom using the standard PIT file ?
also you could try with the 5 file flashing method from this thread

Hello..
Why are you only wiping cache.
You should have done a factory reset on that step.
