There is no root for jb so if you ota update to jb you'll be sol

Before updating to jb read the forums. We have no actual jb root so you have to preserve your root during the update.

Yes and No.
Yes, if he flashes JB, he'll be stuck as flashing back will brick your device. Root or No Root that will happen.
No, If he backs up root using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper method me and several other people used to keep root, he could still have root on JB.

Are you using a laptop by chance? My laptop wouldnt recognize mine. I had to use a desktop to flash via RSD.
Also, having root won't keep you from updating. I backed up with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and flashed the update just fine. Then I restored root on JB. The deleted apps are the only thing stopping the update.

Someone with root that has first hand experience needs to help you. Whatever you do don't update. Root is more important than jelly bean IMO. Jb has some annoying bugs. The keyboard issue is the worst.

can i still flash the batakang rom with it running on ics...and is that the only custom rom out for the ahd right now

Just follow the directions carefully after the utility to retain root then update to jb via the unofficial zip then you can do batakang
Sent from my JokerATRIX HD MAXX

just wanted to thank everyone for helping out, i now have a rooted ahd running on jb....now onto the batakang rom!!!!!

safestrap it, make a slot1, then flash the stock JB411 rooted rom found on this board.
make a backup
then restore that backup to the stock slot.
problem solved, still rooted.

He already got it covered man.

5.6? Yes you can just reroot?
I beleave they fixed the patch to root it on the update. Download rootkeeper from the market.

they fixed the exploit in 5.7.894, but its still open in 5.6.890
Looks like you might have to SBF the phone back to 5.6, root it, apply perm root, and go from there… it's going to be a pain, but it'll get you back to being rooted.

I did unr3l3as3droot and forever root first. Then I did the path saver. Then I flashed 896 and 901. After that, I downloaded the 902 ota but didn't install it. Moved it from /cache to the external SD card. Then I turned the phone off. To turn it back on, I hit both volume up and down as I powered it back on. That took me to a different menu that I can't currently think of the name but that is where you will flash 902 at. Remember that the 902 update has 901 in its file name when flashing. If you come across a triangle thing, hit volume up and down and the update will flash.

Easier root method...
There is an easier way then this now...
1. Install update
2. Use the Droid 4 exploit found at vulnfactory.org/blog/2012/02/11/rooting-the-droid-4-a-failed-bounty-experiment/ and yes it works for the Bionic on 5.9.902 (i just got done using it)
3. Look at your phone.... its now rooted.
And everyone who uses it should donate to djrbliss and prove that the Android community can support such a valuable asset!

[Q] Error installing ics ota bionic

I downloaded the official ICS OTA the other day but when I try to run the install it starts but then flashes a yellow exclamation point in a triangle and then just reboots like normal. Any clues?
Droid Bionic (rooted)

5.9.905.XT875
2.3.4

Any suggestions?
thanks
If you removed any pre-installed apps, then that's your problem. You'll probably need to reflash the official 905 again then reapply the update.

You need to unroot your bionic. If it is not 100% stock. The OTA will not install.

and if you have safestrap, remove that, too. And recovery
I could not unroot my phone to succesfully install the update either. Try House of Bionic. It worked for me with a caveat. In the final step, my phone would not complete the install in reboot recovery and would not boot. I had the ota update file on my sd card from a manual install attempt. In reboot recovery mode I was able to install the ota update from the sd card and everything seems to be fine. Rerooted with motofail ics. I should mention that I did not do 905 fxz to stock rom as I was trying to keep my data.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Things that will make the OTA fail when installing
1. Bootstrap or safestrap is installed
2. Have some bloatware froze or uninstalled
3. Have a mod installed
4. Your still rooted. OTA Rootkeeper will allow you to quickly and easily unroot and reroot. It can be found on Google Play.
These seem to be the most common reasons people have trouble installing an update. I'm sure there are other reasons also, but these seem to be the most common problems.

Attention read before flashing official ota!!

keep in mind before anyone updates to the official jb. i suspect the official release will be patched to not allow us to return to ics. if you keep root after the update good but if you some how break root there might no be a way to get it back as of now! so be cautious before you accept update. we should at least wait for an official jb fxz if you plan on keepng root this way if you mess something up at least you will have a working phone back without root of course. again i dont know they will patch the official release to prevent downgrade but lets find out for sure to be on the safe side. i dont think were gonna get dan to make us a jb root method right away soon.....
It could be considering its small size. Those who have updated to JB OTA should install safestrap and make a backup.

That's not the official one... A leak update for a leak update is not the official OTA. The official package (if for some reason it is 98.4.20) will be the size of at least the 2 leak update.zips together. It is not a 10 MB change from ICS to JB. It's a 10 MB change from JB leak to JB leak.

I can confirm that this OTA does block you from going back too ICS. Lucky for me, I have backups, and i kept root, so I can go back by restoring one of my backups. But I think this leak OTA is pretty good, so I'm not to upset.

Just to clarify for Pete.
We don't want your information stored on your phone.
1) Restore back to ICS using the "restore function" in SS3/TWRP
2) Do a Factory Data Reset in settings.... privacy..... Factory Data Reset (this will wipe all personal info from the phone).
3) After you've done a Factory Data Reset, do a backup in SS3/TWRP.
4) Zip up the folder that has the backup you just performed, and upload it to a file server somewhere.
5) Post the link in this thread.

You can flash a stock fxz through RSD lite. From there you can update. If you want root still, you will need to root again on ICS and then use OTA Root keeper to save root when you upgrade to JB. Root access isn't holding your phone back from getting updated, it won't update because the previous owner deleted system files.
