[Q] Minimoto v1.7 on Milestone 3 - Stock Dock App? - Motorola Droid 3

I have a Milestone 3 (XT860) from Movistar Argentina.
I installed Safestrap v3.05 and minimoto v1.7.
Everything goes as expected, excellent resources management. Over 100 MB RAM FREE!
Right now, I'm dealing with the dock app. I bought the Droid 3 Dock, the one with HDMI and USB connectors. I have one at home and one a work.
At home I use the bedside look, while at work I used the Productivity look and, sometimes, the HDMI mirror.
When I put the phone on the dock, N1 alarm gets opened.
After reading all the 49 pages of the dev thread of Minimoto ROM I realized that there is a way to use some stock apps in this one.
Is there any guide or documentation too look for more info in order to achieve this?

What I usually do is look for the app in another deodexed, stock ROM, like Maverick. Download the Maverick zip file and unzip it. Look for the files in /system/app. I'm not sure what the dock requires; maybe dockservice.apk and dock.apk, though maybe it's smartdock.apk; while the car dock is smartcardock.apk.
I copy those files to SD, enable third party installs in settings->applications, and install the apps by tapping on them with the file application. I suppose you could move them to /system/app with root explorer and change the permissions but I just install the apps and the car dock works.
I only wanted the car dock and installed the last two (the two that begin smart) and the car dock works.

Thanks doogald! :good:
I downloaded latest Maverick 4.5 and installed Dock.apk, SmartDock.apk, DockServices.apk and SmartCarDock.apk.
After doing that, when I put the phone on it's dock, it showed the options for bedside, productivity, dismiss picker and Other "Displays non-smart mode dock apps".
Bedside and Productivity choices fail to start with a quick (so fast that I can not read) message. If I choose "Other", then N1 Alarm starts and keeps on top.
As far as I can see, I'm closer than I thought I would be, but still have to find the way to modify dock app config to not start N1Alarm.
Maybe, some parts of dockservice and dock are running in background to allow N1Alarm opening when on dock.
I tried to post a question in minimoto's post but I'm not allowed to.
Thanks in advance for your time.

Breaking news!
Yesterday, after 10 weeks, I received the shipment with my brand new car dock for my Milestone 3.
At eBay's site "/itm/111127122521?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649"
As I said in my previous posts, I installed the deodexed apks from Maverick 4.5 and when I connected the phone into the car dock everything went as expected. :fingers-crossed:
Car dock app got started and worked like a charm.
My only pending issue is to make work SmartDock Productivity and Bedside apps when the phone is into desktop dock.

[Q] Workaround for more paper icons?

I've been using adw with the "paperless theme" recently and love it (look it up).
It includes a bunch of icons for common apps to make them fit in with the hand drawn theme. Unfortunately, on my hero a lot of them dont work, probably due to sense customisations and replacements. End result is a mixture of awesome paperness and the normal icons, bleh.
I want to download the apk for the theme so that I can open it up, get the icon files out and then use bettercut or something to apply them to shortcuts of my choosing. Only problem is, I can't work out how to get hold of the apk. I can't find it outside of the market, and once installed it doesn't show up in File Manager's apps list, so I can't copy it to SD.
Is there a way of retreiving it from the phone? Or 'intercepting' the market link and directly downloading the apk to SD instead? I've read about a solution using adb to get the apk off the phone but since my trusty hero won't connect over usb any more, that's not an option.
Any ideas?

If your usb doesn't work anymore use the wireless adb... pretty sure its on the market still. Get root explorer and check in system/app you'll find your apks there copy and paste them to your sd card.

[Q] What Bloatware have you frozen/uninstalled without incident?

On my LG Revolution My SystemPanel App shows about 350 MB memory and 12 GB on the SD card. It also cites System Storage 1 GB, Application Storage 1.5 GB and Cache 193 MB. The SuperBox app shows 1.5 GB "Phone" memory. With about 25 applications "active" and several widgets installed, I still have 134 MB memory left
So far I've found the battery life not great, definitely have to charge during the day with 4lte and wifi on.
Noticed a bunch of the bloatware widgets took up memory even when I deleted them from the homescreen. Used TitaniumBackup to Freeze
Apps I've frozen with no apparent problems (yet).

Ya, coming from the incredible, even stock I would have 100-150 mbs of ram, and rooted I'd have usually 180-210. This phone, having the same amount of ram as that, will be anywhere from 30-100 usually. That's some pretty bad bloat.
In 3g only network, the phone actually has a really good battery(compared to the incredible), I can go all day without root so far, the baddest part is the % i lose just sitting there without use and the screen off, it sucks.
And have you been able to assign Google where Bing had priority before? I have the bing search relatively good, just really laggy.
Thanks for this list! I had started to experiment but kept it on the safe side since we don't have a recovery yet.
I noticed that there is quite a bit more listed in Bloat Freezer over Titanium which was my first freeze app. I tried Bloat Freezer when I noticed that some things that were frozen were still showing running processes.
A couple of notes to add on to this -- I'm running Go Launcher and cannot use any of the LG specific widgets, Friends+, What's New, etc. but:
What's New is still running and has functionality beyond the What's New widget. I forget the details but I think on a missed call I got the What's New app to display missed call, sms and email count from the pull down alerts. It was late and I didn't think twice about it until the next day (which is what prompted me to find out what was still running in the background even though I'm using Go Launcher.
I'm not sure exactly which Verizon app is responsible, but i recently unfroze all Verizon specific apps while experimenting and I was prompted to try the new data usage widget from Verizon. When I originally froze all these apps, that widget had stopped working in stock home. So it is not dependent on your home/launcher, but it is dependent on one of the VZ apps.
I'm tempted to just go down your list and freeze everything all at once, but maybe I'll do it in small batches and report back any findings.
Again, thanks for the list!
Wow, that is a ton of frozen bloatpops... didn't think too much of it but that's more apps than i had on my Inc. total on CM.. lol.

I also just completely uninstalled bing search + bing voice.
I seem to be experiencing a couple issues:
1. Search button did not remap to Google Search... so it does nothing at all
2. Lockscreen music controller seems to control a separate instance of the notification area music controller
Avail: 154MB +29MB in 4
(bah!)
I've gone through most of these without a problem -- the last one is VZWSERVICE which is now repeatedly popping up:

I'm curious though what purpose do these serve:
SNS
VZW SMS Filter
VZWService
I have them frozen and already recieved an SMS, so no hindrance there. I recognize the SNS icon from when I first got the phone (one of the widgets I think). I can't see any effect of having them frozen other than the obvious of course.
Be careful with these, I used Bloat Freezer to freeze a small subset of the apps listed in this thread (and none others) and now don't have a home screen. I turn on the phone, slide to unlock, and then the screen is black (normal indicator icons at the top). Holding home gets me to a recent apps page with no recent apps. Nothing else does anything, I can't even turn off the phone without taking the battery out. Any ideas?
the ones i posted can be frozen with no incident.
of course i use a custom launcher (launcher pro) so i can't attest to the home screen working
however, after freezing some other apps listed in other posts my bluetooth wouldn't work...
I use Go Launcher and I was able to add a few to the lists above:
Tunewiki
Sync Service
Mobile IM
Messaging Widget
Messaging (I use GO SMS)
Does anyone know what the LG and Verizon hidden menus processes are?
System seems a lot faster now and has better battery as far as I can tell.
Only issue I can think of, is that When I have my BT earpiece on and connected, I can not seem to get music out of the 3.5mm jack and into the car's aux.
Anyone else have this problem? What is the solution?
What wifi tether is everyone using? My market won't update. So if anyone can post an apk that'd be great.
Also don't freeze autorun 1.0 i think it is. That is the connectivity option for our usb and hdmi slots. Without that it'll work but you can't change the options ever. So you'll be stuck with hdmi off or on and usb charge only cause i think it always starts as.
Little Buddy Sr.
OP:...just a thought, take it or leave it haha
It would be greatly appreciated if you could update the list every so often with new ones added throughout the thread. Then maybe this could become a sticky at some point.
Also:
Anyone else realize Latitude and Twitter for LG doesnt show up in Ti Backup yet is running every once in awhile.... or maybe it's just my phone?
Um I don't even remember twitter being on my phone, I use bloatfreezer and pretty much froze everything on the OP list. I don't think there is to much else that you want to freeze with out risking your phone

If you use the stock launcher and then freeze Home 2.2.2 then you will have no home screen.
I use Go launcher EX so I was able to freeze home with no problems.
Only thing I can think of is a factory reset. But I'm sure others have better ideas.
I don't think Twitter for LG (or anything for LG) is active without the LG Home active.
I left lg home active, twitter doesn't show up anywhere in bloatfreezer. I have nothing on my phone that even refers to twitter.
Yea i'm not really sure where it's at. I think it's a sub-app(?) of something like one of those facebook/twitter/etc feed widgets. But every so often it shows up in my "running" folder on Go Launcher EX, and I used to see it in my task killer when I had one but i've never seen it on a list anywhere else.
rogue bloat? a new age in ruining our phones haha
As major said, and from what i've seen he's right 99% of the time, I haven't seen it since I froze/.bak LG Home. I'll post a screen shot if I end up seeing it again though

we're pretty much able to do that....but the hesitation has been because we have not had a recovery system and it's risky to start deleting any files at all.
However....a recovery system has been through testing lately(yesterday/today) and was released. There's no saying it's perfect but I haven't heard of anyone having big issues. So if you are comfortable with the recovery system available, delete away.

Hopefully you have this fixed already if not:
not sure if this will work but...connect your phone as a USB and hope it connects as a Mass Storage. Go into data/app and delete the Titanium Backup .apk
No idea if this will work, but it's possible that with TiBackup gone it will unfreeze everything.

[Q]Droid 3 User-Created Webtop??

thanks to individuals who jump to conclusions, such as Ed Hardy:
http://www.brighthand.com/default.a...rola+Droid+3+Google+Android+OS+Verizon+Webtop
threads resulted like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982416&page=2
and this:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-3/169413-droid-3-webtop.html
on that note, I believe we are all aware of how much more advanced the droid 3 is than the droid x. speculating, I would assume it would be just as capable of supporting webtop as the bionic since they have pretty much the same hardware.
also, it appears as though people have successfully ported simpler editions of Linux into android environments onto various devices as seen here:
http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1SNNT_enUS429US429&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=ubuntu+g1
furthermore, someone has successfully paired a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with an Atrix as seen here:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/t-atrix/65382-webtop-application-hdmi-cable-no-dock-3.html
so basically, my question is if we were able to replicate/modify a gingerbread-compatible version of realHDMI for video output, confirm the existence or integrate the ability to communicate with Bluetooth mice and keyboards, and for ease-of-use have them all activate under one circumstance ( like with Tasker or something), would it be practical to somehow use that linux environment in conjunction with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and hdmi output and have something close to webtop with the Droid 3?
**disclaimer:
I'm new. Please don't crucify me if I posted something that is false. I'll correct it if you let me know.
The main issue I believe with doing that is the droid 3 has 512 mb of ram. The bionic has that amout set aside just for webtop. I'm not sure its even possible, or realistically usable on our phone, although if it is that'd be really cool.

that's why I've tried piecing together this alternative. If I remember correctly, the linux distro ran completely off the sd card, but that may not be relevant to your comment.

why does that matter? the 1GB of storage is because the webtop app is part of the ROM. even an un-rooted D3 could store a user-created app somewhere else, like the SD card.
also, why bother with BT mouse and keyboard? use a USB host controller (simple cable, that attaches to the mini-USB) and you can attach wireless USB versions (cheaper, and more available).
oh. didn't know that existed. lol.
sounds pretty sweet!
is it confirmed to work with this phone?
Storage and ram are not the same.
Droid 3 has 512 meg of ram.
Droid Bionic has 1024 meg of ram.
Webtop uses a good chunk of that to function, if the Droid 3 could run it...what ram would we use to run our applications in now, since its mostly being used by Webtop?

How hard would it be to create a generic android laptop dock/webtop. Take something in the style of a laptop. The monitor is fed via microHDMI, the speakers could be fed either with HDMI audio or 3.5mm headphone jack. Keyboard and touchpad support are done via bluetooth or USB host if the phone supports it. The keyboard, touchpad, monitor and microUSB charging for the phone would all be powered by a battery and charger on the laptop style body.
Maybe this all isn't possible now. Perhaps when we get Android ICS we'll get better bluetooth support so that generic keyboard/mouse support is universal.
Running Debian squeeze with vncserver LXDE and connecting with androidVNC client here. Its not too bad atleast not as bad as my Touch Pro 2 was. Here is a script that can install it, forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1147358 though it has some problems installing on the Droid 3. So what I did was copy it over from the TP2. And here www.androidfanatic.com/community-forums.html? func=view&catid=9&id=1615 are instruction to get vnc setup. Not sure how well HDMI works and if it would work using vnc.
There are other ways to install Debian and also Ubuntu, theres a ubuntu.img floating around somewhere all set up, just dont know where.

from what i recall of realhdmi from my droid x, the output was a mirror, so whatever was displayed on the screen came up on the tv, but the x was also single core, which apparently makes a huge difference in output processing methodology.
is there any similar software for the new dual core architecture processors?
if there was a way to get a stable version of ubuntu as the desktop interface in "webtop" form, that would be amazing (mostly because i am familiar with it. lol)

The original Bionic had only 512mb of ram as well.
To OP:
I have been pushing for this for a while. There's NO reason that webtop can't be ported to the Droid 3. I want to see it done because webtop is the only feature I truly want that I don't have on my Droid 3.

Webtop does shut down and Android still controls process management; Webtop runs as a guest OS on the device and the Android VM provides APKs for interfacing with it (like sharing contacts, emails, etc between apps or mouse/keyboard input).
You're not going to be using webtop and your phone at the same time. When you're done with webtop, you'll shut it down and resume using your phone.
Are there any good write-ups on what exactly webtop is and how it works?
Is it just a second linux instance limited to a basic shell and web browser? If so could we look at compiling Puppy for arm to live in the reduced space?
Its an ARM flavor of pared-down Ubuntu running as a guest OS. I'm assuming it runs some type of proprietary VNC-type protocol that communicate with the Android VM.
Last I checked there were 3 or 4 Android services/activities associated with Webtop. One of them monitored the dock connectedness, one appeared to provide shared data access (like contacts, emails, notes, documents, etc), and I'm guessing one was responsible for the phone homescreen snapshots.
Bluetooth mouse, keyboard ok
Good news! I just paired my Rocketfish bluetooth keyboard and mouse (models RF-BTKB2 and RF-BTMSE2) with my Droid 3 and both work! Details follow:
The mouse cursor is black. Brings the phone out of suspend when moved as expected. Scrollwheel works. Right click functions as the "back key," center click is the menu. Traditional left click works like normal. Swiping things doesn't work (the screens get stuck in the animation *unless* you drag and release at the right time). All multimedia buttons (play, forward/back, stop) work.
Most keys on the keyboard work like normal. Exceptions:
F1: Menu
F3: Dialer
F4: locks phone
F5: Search
F2,F6-F12: don't do anything.
HOME: Desktop preview
Numlock: Doesn't activate
Number pad: Functions as arrow keys (as expected with Numlock not engaging).
Math keys (next to numpad): +-*/ do not function either
Arrow keys ok
CTRL: Menu
ALT: No function
Super/Windows key: Menu
Print screen, Scroll lock, and Pause/break keys appear to have no function.
My keyboard also has multimedia keys:
Volume up/down adjust system/ringer/music volume all work
Mail: Does nothing
Search: brings up search
Play/Pause/Forward/Backward/Mute all work in the (default) music application.
I bought the Rocketfish Bluetooth keyboard/mouse because they are extremely Linux compatible. Not sure if results will be the same with other devices.
If anyone wants to see the results of "adb logcat" when I press keys just ask and I'd be happy to post. The good news is it appears bluetooth keyboard/mice are reasonably well supported.
My Razer Orochi (bluetooth mouse) connects to my D3 just fine (as expected) and each button performs the same as the guy above me said his mouse did.
So now all we need to do is try the Droid bionic HD station dock when it's out to make this happen?
Tho i'm not interested in the webtop stuff, i'd like to use the usb ports and have a better dock then the current Droid 3s.
-smc
Tip - Ctrl-Alt-Del on the bluetooth keyboard restarts the phone
ok, so then:
keyboard/mouse = proven
webtop capability = plausible, with recompilation of some form of ubuntu
hdmi output = yet to be determined
dock sensing/emulation = plausible, probably going to be one of the easier tasks to accomplish
right?
If its a modified *Ubuntu img why not see if anyone is able to extract it from the phone, and view the root fs?
The D3 should have no issue with the ram, the eris can run Debian/Ubuntu and function fine. It stores everything minus the vnc on the SD card.
I'm moving over to the D3 soon myself, and would love to see a proper webtop, desktop system on this phone.

So I tried to port it using files from the bionic. Dd'd /dev/block/webtop to a secondary portion on my sdcard. Mounted at /osh, mounted /proc at /proc/osh and can't get anything to run. Copied the webtop apk's and odex's over as well. Need somebody more knowledgeable.
tallnerd1985 said:
It maybe possible but you would have mount the partition off the memory card due to the inability to partition off the internal NAND for /OSH which is where the Webtop files are stored. Join in on the irc channel in my signature later on today and I will see if I can get Sogarth from Atrix forums to join since he came up with the Webtop2sd app.

Anyway, the issue I'm having is that despite SmartConnect being configured to start the clock when the dock is connected, when putting my V into the dock it will always open the 500px app. There must be some pre-defined action that 500px intereferes with, but I can't get to the bottom of this. Also, putting the phone in and out of the dock will each time cause GoLauncher to restart.
Does anyone have any idea why this is? Note: as usual, I've been messing with app permissions and froze a number of apps in order to keep unwanted apps from occupying the memory, accessing the internet and generally draining the battery. Possible that this caused the problem.
Ugh. And now NFC is gone. I guess I'll just have to re-flash the firmware then ...
Ah well, so resetting the system (I did a Titanium Backup backup beforehand) solved the NFC problem. This time, I made sure only to freeze apps and disable autoruns that I was absolutely certain weren't necessary. So far, NFC is working again. I'll check later whether this had any effect on the 500px app being opened by the dock action problem.

My everyday NSTG has been updated to FW 1.2.2, running a kernel for 1.2.1 that enables multi-touch, no-refresh mode, and USB host/audio. I never found a kernel that would support BOTH no-refresh and fast mode AND USB, but for reading text no-refresh runs rings around fast mode, IMHO. So I took that kernel and substituted it for the one in the @pinguy1982 USB Host/Audio package so I would have the tweaked audio driver set he put together AND NoRefresh mode. Worked like a charm
I decided to ignore the QuickNav buttons entirely. I assigned the "n" button to "Home" (ADW Launcher) . I assigned the upper left button to "Back" and the upper right button to "Menu". Lower right is set to my "Set Cover" app.
I tried to create a really different look and feel (see images below) using a combination of Desktop VisualizeR and SiMi Folder, two amazing apps. A SiMi folder is essentially a miniature launcher which can be placed on the desktop and assigned an icon using Desktop VisualizeR. More information on the design of the home screen is here.
I also used Minimalistic Text to create the date/greeting and weather widgets (NST Weather Widget app). Any apps that didn't fit into my SiMi folder categories were typically seldom used tools of some sort (wallpaper picker, etc.), so they ended up only in the app drawer. ADW Launcher allows me to hide in the drawer "junk" apps or apps that are one-touch which have been assigned using NTMM.
I have two other NSTs I use for experiments. One runs the unofficial 1.2.2 UK ROM as described here and the other is set up just like the NSTG described above.
These three devices are registered and use the B&N Reader and Library apps.
I also have an NSTG which I have set up without B&N apps as described here. I have installed Mantano Reader and ColorDict (with the Merriam Webster Collegiate dictionary, just like B&N) to replace the missing B&N stuff. Otherwise, it is set up the same as the two NSTs. It is, however, running FW 1.2.1 which is helpful to me when developing Tasker-based apps since plugins do not work with FW 1.2.2 (that is, the Tasker routines do not call the plugins but apps made from the routines have no issues with the plugins).
All the devices also have dual-boot capability for CM 11.
My apps: those marked with * may be hard to find/are older versions and are included in a bundled zip here (note: Mediafire seems to have a problem with a zip full of apk files so each file has an added ".OLD" extension. Remove this before side-loading). Non-B&N apps with no links either came bundled with NookManager or are from the PlayStore (or places like it).

For homescreen setup screenshots, you can look at the NTG Homescreens 2 and NTG Homesceens 3 albums in my profile. I won't upload screenshots of my homescreen because I am a homescreen themer and change my setup about every other day. I can, however, add screenshots of other parts of my device, if you like.
The reason my uRamdisk is unreleased is that it is not stable enough or safe enough for widespread use. The main change that causes this is my seting it up to mount the /boot partition as read-write upon the device booting up. This is extremely dangerous for any average, non-developer user to have, because if even one file in that partition gets modified incorrectly or deleted, their Nook will become permanently unusable for anything except a paperweight.
Hopefully this explains things for you.
How do you guys have so much space to add apps to your NST? I've got the original NST and I keep getting warnings that the Nook is running out of space... Unless the NSTGL has a larger system ROM space than the NST? NOOK!E, I am currently using the 1337 ROM, and everything else seems to be working pretty great.

Um...I dunno? I have the original NST, too, with an 8 GB SD card (6 GB is still free). 90% of the internal storage is still free. I only have a few B&N books on internal storage, the bulk (many) are on the SD card along with music and audiobooks.
I have don't have any apps moved to the SD card.
So how come you're running out of memory? I get occasional nags from CleanMaster that RAM is scarce when I'm doing a lot of work, switching apps, etc., but I've never received any warnings about running out of storage space.

Interesting... I get the alerts like in screenshots below, including when I try to install apps from sdcard or market... How would I move stuff to /system/app from wherever it is? ES File Explorer seems to be finicky, at best, and I can't change the view to show full file names in list form.
Thanks,
DKaine

Use ADB tool or you can use Total commander with ADB plugin on windows machine http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2105707
Move apps from /data/app to system/app
And don't forget to set permissions to 644

Maybe, but I think the bigger question is "why is this happening in the first place?" Did you ever do any repartitioning? I'm running stock 1.21 and have never fiddled with anything like that. I've never moved apps to my SD card and have never actually even removed any stock apps, just disabled them by changing the extension to .OLD. I just let apps install wherever they have a mind to. The only thing I have avoided, as a matter of course, is storing media on the internal memory (except for the few B&N books). All my own stuff goes on the SD card.
So what's taking up so much space on your NST? Something's not right.

Hi, sorry for the delay in response... Work kind of got in the way...
I have never done any re-partitioning, and I've got a 16gb sdcard. This is the first time I'm trying to move apps around, and I don't have many B&N books on the internal memory. I've only had the basic apps that install when first installing the ROM (UCbrowser, abridged list of Google Apps, SuperSU, ES File Explorer, etc.)... I started getting the alerts mentioned before just randomly that the Nook storage space was getting close to full. I only started getting the new errors when trying to install apps from the GoogleMarket or side-loaded sources. I only started trying to get rid of stuff/clear space once I started getting these messages/errors.
I've followed all the steps in the first post here Nookie's 1337 ROM to update from an earlier version of that ROM.
Thanks for following up.
DKaine
Yep, and either yattaro or NOOKIE would be your best bet for help with that ROM and the issues you are seeing. I didn't notice any similar responses within that original thread. You might try a PM to NOOKIE. I know he's busy with school right now, but he'll get back to you.
Do you think that antivirus apps are 100% useless on NST (and android devices in general)?
edit: News Republic fails to connect, says: "not trusted certificate server", any clue? (or other similar application working?)

I think that the system is too limited to get into many dodgy situations in which you might need antivirus protection
Seriously, even if you could find an app that would work on 2.1, the chances of the database being current is very small. It would also probably slow the system down even more.
I am bummed about News Republic It was working fine the last time I checked it. The security certificate issue is new and I guess it's one that is not covered by the updated cacerts file used to resurrect the Kindle app and others. I'll try to take a look at the logcat and see if it identifies the certificate name.
In the meanwhile, the NewsHog app still works (just checked to be sure) except for the weather (which may be part of the paid version). It's a little cranky syncing so you may have to touch the sync symbol as you move from news category to category. Also, scrolling is an issue (as it is with nearly all of these apps except for News Republic!!!!!). A very quick flick with your thumb across the bottom right corner of the screen usually works best, but it is a skill. Also helps to keep the screen gutters clean.
Edit: I managed to scrape up older versions of News Republic that spanned 3.0 to 4.2. None of the 4.x would install so they are for higher Android versions. The final 3.x series (3.30) installed and opened OK but exhibited the same issue. A glance at the logcat revealed multiple server contact problems during the initial opening of the app. So it's not just one certificate, regardless of what the screen notification says. Looks like a recent change left the older versions in the dust. RIP.
Also, although it's not quite as streamlined as an app, you can bookmark news.Google.com in your browser--I use Opera Mobile--and if you take the time to customize your view when using a PC (and signed in) you can achieve a similar effect if signed in on your NST browser. No scrolling issues either.
Thanks for the info, unfortunately News Republic as you said continues to have issues. NewsHog isn't bad unless you live in Greece - there is no locale for my country Finally, bookmarking news.google.com/gr (or whatever) is a good idea, but manage the whole thing from desktop doesn't work as opera NST version is too old to sync with current desktop browser. I also use WordNews, seems reliable and has a lot of sources working.

It's not necessary to sync browsers. All you have to do is sign in with the same Google account you use on the NST and set up your news preferences. If you sign in with Opera on the NST then the same news preferences will be displayed. I finally put an Opera shortcut to Google News on my NST home screen and used the Google news app icon: -)
Thanks for the WorldNews tip. I'll check it out.

That was a hit! Done and enjoyed, thanks!
GenieWidget does not seem to work...when I try to add a location it tells me that it has no internet access, which is weird since everything else works with wifi on my rooted NST glowlight...?

GenieWidget has been dead for quite awhile. Even if you could set a location, the weather part was the first to die and then eventually you could not bring up the news either.
If you're interested in weather, WeatherAce is pretty nice, especially if you have a Wunderground API key (free). The only news apps I have that still work are BBC, NPR and NewsHog. All suffer to varying degrees with cranky vertical scrolling, but you can manage with some practice and very clean screen edges. Another alternative is to customize Google News (news.google.com) on your PC logged in to the same account that your NSTG is registered under. If you then sign in on the browser you use for your NSTG, you will get those same customizations. I did that and set a shortcut on my home screen, "borrowing" the current GoogleNews app icon. At least with that one (in Opera Mobile) there are no scrolling issues.
Working versions of the apps I mentioned above can be found in the zip package linked from my signature.
