Foreign sim card - Motorola Droid 3

Hey guys,
I was unlocking my Droid 3 (got code from Verizon) for when I go to Poland this weekend. I put in an old prepaid sim card I had from my last trip to unlock it, and somehow I have 3g etc? My verizon sim is not even in the phone. How is that possible?

Verizon does not use the SIM to their own network - the phone connects using CDMA, which doesn't use SIM cards. The SIM is used to connect using GSM networks when CDMA networks (either Verizon or one that they have a roaming agreement with) are not available, or if you change the mobile network to GSM.

That is strange...so the verizon sim in there is just for global roaming?

That's right. I think, but I'm not 100% sure, that you can store contacts there, if you wish, as well.

Stupid question, did you switch it to GSM?

hi, sorta of non related but, i'm looking to buy a D3 to use here on GSM networks, the frequencies matches those i'll be using here.
but about the unlock codes, are those sold online working, or there are still some units that no code works? i was reading thru some topics about that and i'm worried....
thanks!

Use unlock4moto.com if you do. Some are but I haven't seen many reports lately.

I just used them a couple of weeks ago and the unlock code they sent me was perfect.
I think that the only issue would be if somebody had tried to unlock successfully - if you enter an incorrect code enough times, the phone will no longer allow you to unlock. The cost at unlock4moto.com was very reasonable, though ($6 US, IIRC).

Yup, I can confirm that - unlocked mine about 1 month ago. Worked first time - now using a Verizon Droid3 in Ireland with HSPA on 3
Note. some edits are recommended for best experience on GSM - see hashcode's gsm thread.

[Q] Droid 2 Global/Pro - unlocking?

Does anyone know if it will be possible to unlock the Droid 2 Global or Pro? I know they are CDMA devices by default but as they also have WCDMA SIM cards I would love to use this unlocked on WCDMA networks. I know some BB's on Verizon (and previously on Bell/Telus) were sold like this and unlocked so I'm guessing theoretically possible, but is it likely???
Hi that would be great so when I travel to EU I would just put a pre-paid SIM inside and avoid any Roaming charges.
Does anyone know? Maybe installing Cyanogen will unlock it?
Yes, I just unlocked my D2 Global yesterday. Call VZW Global Support and they will give you the unlock code as long as your line has been active with no late payments for at least 6 months.
There are still some kinks though because when I put in my foreign SIM and scanned for local GSM networks, nothing came up. Others on various forums have reported this issue as well. I'm hoping it's just that this happens while in the USA, but I'm waiting to see if anyone else can shed some light on it.

I wish that were the case lol. It turns out VZW may have somehow restricted access to the 850/1900 MHz GSM/UMTS bands, even though the device has the hardware to support them.
Q: Because it has two unlock codes. One unlocks any Sim card, the second code will be prompted only if the Sim card is not of any US carriers. Thanks

Can D3 and activate on pageplus?? and where can i get the phone with no contract?

Can D3 and activate on pageplus?? and where can i get the phone with no contract?
i think verizon offers $459 and amazon offers $549~ but how can i buy the phone with $459 price?
and can i return it if i cant get activated on pageplus
You need a verizon account to purchase the phone, or find a friend that does. The d3 should work on pageplus as its not a new 4glte device that requires a sim to activate, uses an old school *228 activation

what does that mean??
If I buy the phone from Amazon wireless will it be unlocked, that is, can it work anywhere in the world on any GSM provider's SIM?
A proper answer would be much appreciated.
I seriously wanna buy this phone and I am willing to pay the $550 price at Amazon wireless, if and only if, the phone is unlocked.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the D3 isn't a GSM phone. I'm pretty sure its only a global cdma

The Droid 3 is a GSM and CDMA handset, it is mentioned in the verizon manual for this handset that a sim card can be inserted, currently it is suspected however that this is sim locked.
http://cache.vzw.com/multimedia/mim/mot_droid3/droid3.pdf
Go to the Global Phone section in this PDF and it is mentioned
It is a global phone that supports GSM networks. Arguing over it won't help us much. What will help is an answer to which version of the phone is unlocked for all GSM networks.
Its is a GSM global phone, includes a Verizon SIM that is locked. Verizon customers in good standing can get the phone unlocked with a call to Verizon Global support.

Hmmm....yes, but the question here is whether the phones with no contract are also SIM locked or not.
hi guys, can anyone answer my question
So, here's the response I got from the Amazonwireless guys:
{I'm very sorry but the replacement phones (phone only no service) on Amazonwireless are locked to the carriers. You would need to find an unlocked phone.
There are basically two types of unlocked phones. CDMA Unlocked and GSM Unlocked.
An Unlocked CDMA phone will basically work with carriers like Verizon, Alltel, and Sprint. Unlocked GSM phones work with carriers such as AT&T and T-Mobile.
Unlocked cell phones are designed to work with any carrier that uses SIM cards. Some advanced features may not work depending on the carrier you are using. I would recommend contacting the carrier you are going to be using to ask if the phone you are interested in will work with their network, and if there are any features that you would not be able to use.
If you would like to shop for an unlocked cell phone please visit Amazon.com using the link below
www(dot)amazon(dot)com/cellphones
I hope this information helps. We look forward to seeing you again soon.}
Thomaslau it means that this phone still needs to be activated using *228 which pageplus accepts. 4gLTE phones do not use *228, they use a sim card to activate

so it will works???
What my understanding is with CDMA is that it's ALWAYS unlocked. The problem lies with carriers not allowing foreign ECID/IMEI's on their network database which allows the phones to work.
Should work flawless

ok, now i got my droid 3, but i struck at the activation menu, the one with the android robot. what should i do to activate my phone on pageplus?? do i need to activate my phone on verizon then pageplus?
I thought with pageplus you call them, give them the esn from the back of the phone, starts with a000000, then dial *228 when they tell you to

thx, i will try it

Trouble getting a data only sim card to work

I have a verizon htc one m7 running a custom rom. I'm currently in Japan and decided to get a data only sim card. Registering on the site was fine, but when I put the sim card in the phone says that it is a non verizon sim. I've put in all the APN info and I think everything should work but it isn't. I've been looking for a solution for quite a while now but with no luck.

If you put in a sim and it tells you it is not a Verizon aim then it is locked and they have no idea what they are talking about. Which I hate to say is not uncommon for customer service people.
Just tell them you need it unlocked to be able to use international SIM cards.
Verizon HTC one comes sim unlocked out of the box. You must change the network type to global. On most stock based ROMs, it is set to CDMA/LTE only by default.
You must also double check that the carrier you are using utilizes the frequencies that the Verizon one supports. Below is the GSM bands the Verizon one supports:
UMTS/HSPA 900/2100MHz,
GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz
The verizon one does not support WCDMA or AWS LTE.

how do I get my AT&T galaxy s5 to work with Verizon SIM card

The phone is sim unlocked via an unlock code I bought but when I put my Verizon SIM card in it it won't make phone calls or texts our anything. The only thing it does is say not registered on network. The phone is rooted but I haven't had time to tinker with it yet.
Hi,
I will have your thread moved to your device section. You will need to register on XDA to respond to any replies.
Good luck!

Verizon is not CDMA (used to be but dropped in favor of GSM) Sprint is CDMA Verizon is GSM just different bands you would need to change out the APN's to get any luck at all
Verizon is not gsm. That is total bs.. show a source.

The "sim" cards they use are for 4g data only. They are still cdma. Totally different concept. So I'll wait for you to post a credible link proving your statement...

Switch to SIM card?

I have an at&t version that is off lease. The phone was paid for so I kept it and basically been using it as a mini tablet on my home WiFi for the last year.. it still works fine
Is there anything I can do to make it work off a Sim card?
Paul
Take any SIM from a phone you already have active, place it in the Nexus and Viola!!!

If you want to use the phone on a carrier other than AT&T your going to need to unlock the phone first. You can request an unlock code from AT&T here.
Thanks, but I have since found it was with Sprint.
Thanks for your help. I've sense discovered it was with Sprint. You wouldn't happen to have a link for them would you? TIA

If it is on Sprint it should already be unlocked. AT&T was the only carrier to offer the Nexus 6 and therefore it was the only locked version.

That's odd. This is a Nexus 6 and it was on Sprint. It hasn't been active for over a year but the carrier still says Sprint.
Will the internal antenna allow it to work on a Tracphone (generic prepaid Verizon network) sim?

I'm not sure about it working on Tracphone but my gut feeling is that it will. The Nexus 6 worked on Verizon so that shouldn't be a problem but I'm not sure if the APN settings for Tracphone will be there or if you will have to manually create a new APN for them.

So, the phone will "remember" its last carrier until you pop in a SIM. Should work just fine.
Thanks
