Alright so I'm new to all this stuff and decided that changing the boot animation (after reading multiple threads) would be any easy enough beginner mod. So I downloaded the animation zip that I wanted, copied it on to my sdcard, used root explorer to delete and replace the factory bootanimation.zip with the one i had downloaded. However it didn't work. So I thought maybe I should try a different file but still no go. No matter which one I try I still get the same animation. It just says "android" in a silverish color while booting. Any help is much appreciated. And maybe keep the noob bashing to a minimum?
Did you put the bootanimation.zip in the /system/media folder? Did you verify the permissions? Maybe try clearing cache in recovery? I think the animation you see is if there is no valid boot animation file.

You should ask this in the correct area for your phone. I have no knowledge of any other phones but Magic.
Still, see if this helps. When I change my boot animation I put it to system/media/bootanimation.zip.
Why can't you get to recovery?
I checked there i couldnt find anything.
There is no recovery for my phone yet.
Yeah ill ask in the correct forums.
It's either /system/media, /system/customize/resource or /data/local, or more than one of them.
1st off I love how you bump your own thread lol.
2nd, If you phone is rooted install 'root explorer' or simular and search for bootanimation.zip, this will show you where your current animation is stored.
3rd. Remember the directory & copy the bootanimation.zip you want into that folder & overwrite, reboot.
4th. Hope that helps, enjoy !
Try to push it to /data/local/ with adb.
I've done a few searchs to try and figure this out on my own, but I've been coming up short. I'm just trying to get a custom boot animation on my Sprint Tab. I'm comfortable removing the stock animation and audio. I can't, however, find anyway to add my own. I've tried renaming the custom animation to bootani.qmg with the stock one deleted out. When I boot up, though, it shows nothing still and boots up with no animation. Not asking for someone to reply with a written out guide, but a point in the right direction would be awesome.
Thanks!
Get your new bootanim (usually called bootanimation.zip butbif bit not, then rename it to that) then move it to system/media. Reboot and you should have been new boot anim

That's the issue. Thought that's all I needed to do, but after trying that exact method repeatedly with different animations and bootanimation.zip files, it does not work for me.
I've tried renaming the file bootani.qmg, bootanimation.qmg, bootani.zip, and bootanimation.zip.
The .qmg is the sound file so you don't need that. What video format is your animation? It isn't just the name that has to be correct, its the format and file size too.
I would suggest using the DukeNukem boot file, since we know it works, to verify the process, then go make a custom file. And be sure to post back with your results!
That would make more sense. I just sorta assumed maybe it was searching for a file name and not finding it. Will try once more with the suggested boot animation and let ya know!
DukeNukem was also a no go. :/
I don't have a sprint tab, but the system folders and files sound the same as my at&t tab. What I did was create a folder and moved the boot animation.zip, and the .qmg files in there, then moved the duke animation into the system/media folder.
So I was trying to tweak some boot animations and they weren't showing... now, I tried to go back to my original bootanimation.zip, and it's not showing either....
Should I need to clear my cache or something? I know the file I have loaded now was fine, and the permissions are correct... but now it's not displaying...
Any ideas?

You need to follow the directions, HERE. The most important part is to NOT COMPRESS the zip file. If using 7-zip, set the compression level to "store." If you compress the zip file, you end up with you have now, a boot animation that does not show.
haha good to know.
I just kept leaving 7zip at it's default settings. Doesn't really explain why the original zip that worked stopped working though.
I'll give it a try with 7zip set to store.
Thanks
Well, not compressing it definitely worked...

I took the one located here, and resized it for the NC.
I didn't bother making it flashable, but just drop it into /system/media and change permissions to rw-r--r-- and it should be fine
Actually... The upload keeps failing.... not sure why though, it doesnt exceed the file size.

Here's a link to it on my dropbox though.
Try putting the new boot animation zip in data/local. That way you won't need to backup the original that is in system/media in case you want it back. Data/local simply preempts the one that is in media upon flash.
Also, if you decide you like the newer animation, then you won't have to replace it every time you flash an update, as data isn't touched by any of the cache wipes or flashes.
Thanks man, that's really good to know.

using the .zip from this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357926)
I'm trying to change my boot animation. I've place the new animation zip in the /system/customize/resource. I renamed the animation zip to that of "att_bootup_one.zip" since that is the zip file that is called for in the XML file in /system/customize/resource/CID.
I got it to work once. I restarted the phone a second time and all the boot animations were that of a stock HTC one.
The thing I don't understand is; I overwrote the orginal .zip animation and on the second restart (after the first successful restart with new boot animation) the damn original boot screen was back.
I even set the permission on all necessary folders to rwx-rwx-rwx. I am a total rookie and hoping some one can advise me.
Thank you
Also, sorry if this is not the place to post this topic.
EDIT: I found that it will work if I "Power off" then turn the phone on. If I "Restart" boot animation restores to stock.
What ROM and version are you running? I've always placed the bootanimation.zip file in /system/media
Stock kernel has write protection on the system partition, so changed or deleted files return upon reboot. You'll need a custom kernel with the write protection disabled or make the change in custom recovery via an adb shell.

Thanks buddy. This rookie appreciates the advice
This leads me to another question though. I've also tried deleting the orignal boot animation. How does the stock animations come back if I have deleted them?

4.4.2
HTC Sense 6.0.
Im not sure if thats info you asked for. Im pretty sure its the stock rom. All I did was root the phone.
Im still learning
Ok so im stuck.
I've tried everything to install a different boot animation on my T-Mobile Note 4.
I tried downloading a file that was titled "CWM_CustomBootanimation_44_Enable.zip"
then going into an XDA thread that had a bunch of "bootanimation.zip"'s and choosing the one I liked.
Downloaded and placed it in my system/media/ folder.
Gave it the right permisions.
But nothing happened... I rebooted the phone and now all i had was just the stock samsung note 4 boot-up, but oddly i was now missing the T-mobile one that would show up right after, although the T-Mo jingle remained.
I kept searching and then found the strategy of just replacing the "bootsamsung.qmg" and "bootsamsungloop.qmg" files.
I found another boot animation i liked with .qmg format.
It came in zip folder and i extracted the 2 files, copied them over and named them like the original files (also adding an "_old" to the titles of the originals incase i ever needed them again)
Gave them the right permissions
Rebooted
And same thing again... just the stock black note 4 screen
At this point i decided to try another .qmg file, but this time for the shutdown animation...
Did pretty much the same run around...
and it worked! so the shut down animation was changed without a hitch.
I went back to the media folder and realized there were other boot files such as "bootsamsungmini.qmg", "bootsamsungminiloop.qmg", "bootsamsungmini2.qmg" and "bootsamsungmini2loop.qmg"
so i tried switching all of them to the 2 .qmg files i originally downloaded, with the right permissions, but nothing... still same stock black boot up.
So now, like i said, I'm stuck...
Should i have just put the whole zip file in the media folder? there were two folders in that zip. One was system/media with the two new boot animations and the other was META-INF/com/google/android/ with two files "update-binary" and "updater-script". Not sure if i have to do anything with these files.
Ive also heard theres an app on the market called Boot Animation but it has lots of mixed reviews, dont feel like going through the hassle of possibly bricking my device now.
And ive never been a custom rom kinda guy so i dont want to switch roms just for a boot animaion.
Any help would be appreciated thanks.
Anyone?
Most system/media files contain a bootanimation.zip folder. Make sure you delete it or when you put in the new qmg the system will boot from the zip file before the extracted qmgs
