So, just this last week after having my new Sony Xperia TL for a month I started experiencing the sleep of death issues, I haven't tried to do the restore via PC companion yet, if it does it again tonight I will. (I'll probably want to do that before updating to JellyBean anyways).
So far it's only happened at night, when on the charger for four+ hours, it's been hit and miss, happened two nights in a row, then worked two nights in a row, then locked up again last night.
The locked state; the screen is off doesn't respond to lock button, the notification light is blinking. I have to reboot it with the Volume Up + power button.
I thought I had fixed it by removing the PSM store (Installed that shortly before this fun started)..
Any other tips?

So, on Saturday (when I posted this) I disabled the ATT wifi hotspot software, and also in the apps section of developer options;
Checked "don't keep activities"
I'm not sure if I've solved the problem but the last two nights it hasn't locked up and yesterday the battery life was the best I've ever had.
I have only experienced this with wifi on. So long as wifi is off, it's not had a SoD issue. Irritating.
Seems legit

That's what happened to me just now. I checked "don't keep activities" but left wifi on. I'll see if it happens again. No point in having a smart phone if i cant use my wifi.

Sod returned for me last night.
The only thing I changed yesterday was installing dead trigger. I rebooted into recovery and cleared the cache and dalvik.
I saw this thread for the v and noticed that this is also in our Rom.

I have had the TL for about a week now and have had this sleep of death happen twice. First time it happened i was charging it during the day with a little bit of use here and there. The second time it happened was overnight while i was sleeping. I was depending on the phone's alarm to wake me up, it never did. Woke up an hour later on my own and luckily wasn't late to work. I read somewhere else that killing active apps before putting it on the charger helps. It's been two night using this theory and so far so good. I am not rooted or unlocked. 1) Does anyone know if this is a hardware or software issue? 2) Should I return it for another device? I have a few more days to return it if need be. 3) Does the update to Jelly Bean bring a fix? Rumor has it March 12th is when the TL gets JB.
Oh and I have wifi on when I'm home.
No jellybean doesn't fix it. I'm running rooted jellybean (xperiment 2.0).
Friday night while charging it did the sod. I didn't change anything and its been fine the last four nights. I have no idea what causes it. I thought it was the line in build.prop, but not anymore.

Turned it off last night and the phone didn't SOD. The interesting thing is the night before I checked my phone about an hour before my alarm was supposed to go off and it woke up fine.
Any idea if it is wifi, why? Is there a build.prop tweak we can do to sort this out?
I have been keeping my wifi on for the last few days, and so far no more SOD. Only thing I have been doing is clearing any active apps before going to bed. As long as this keeps working, I'm good with it. Think it's been about 5 days so far. Will post if anything changes.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk 2
If clearing active apps keeps it from locking up, one of the apps has to be the problem. Wonder if it'd be worth posting an app list?
Sent from my LT30p using xda app-developers app
I downloaded a system cleaner Friday and since I've run that there hasn't been any sod.
I've left WiFi on overnight all four nights.
Sent from my LT30p using xda app-developers app
So in my drunken state last night I forgot to clear my apps before passing out. I did not get a SOD. I probably got lucky. I also want to throw out there that the first week of ownership, I kept everything stock and only added my email apps since I heard jelly bean was coming out. I always do a factory reset after a big change in OS, so I didn't want to have to set up all my screens again. Anyway, I hot my SOD's during that time. So I think the issue is bigger than an app related one. Maybe the Jelly Bean update fixed it.
Sent from my Sony Xperia TL (LT30at) using Tapatalk.
Seems like the consensus on the net is leaning towards Wifi setting "don't keep activities" for solving this. Just picked up my V last week and promptly had 3 SoD's after changing the wifi setting to "only if connected". Yesterday switched back after some searching and so far no issues. We'll se how it goes coming week.
BTW, my phone came with latest 4.1.2 and still has.
Since I've installed that system cleaner app, the phone hasn't locked up overnight.
I have wifi set to location mode, which seems to turn wifi off when the screen is off.
So, it's either a file problem, or a wifi problem.
Up time; 83 hours, xperiment 2.3.
I'd be curious if anyone with sod, flashed cm10.1 and still experienced them.

does the incredible s reboot nightly for anyone?
My wife tells me that every night the phones light shines very brightly all of a sudden and it it either makes a sound or vibrates. I am a sound sleeper so I don't wake up.
This morning I noticed that there is a notification telling me if I want to send the report to HTC for the system crash. And I think I've seen this every day, but I just didn't pay attention to it.
So could the phone be crashing or rebooting every night?
I haven't heard of it before ... not that i can recall at least.
It sounds like that is exactly what is happening, the bright light, the sound, the vibrate... and of course the crash report.. lol...
it is quite odd for it to happen only during the nights though, seems like some event at a particular time triggers it
First try:
Try uninstalling a few apps which could be doing this, for example some app that is set to go off or update ( a weather app or location app for example ) at certain intervals of time.
Last shot:
i would back up all my data and do a factor reset or even better an update to 2.3 if ur not already on it!
P.S ... sorry i cant think of another solution at this point of time maybe some other members can help !

I had GPS turned off last night. Tonight I am going to turn off autosync. Then the next night I'll look into weather. I sorta wish there was an app that would just turn my phone off each night at a certain time.

Last night I had installed "Night Mode" app. Didn't really work as far as stopping the bright lights. And I don't think its the cause, since I've noticed this several nights in a row. I'll look into juice defender.
I had my fair share of random reboots, however, not nightly
I almost wanted to sent the phone back to HTC, but due to tight travelling schedules, I couldn't.
I tried a couple of things, but I think the action that made all the difference was formatting the SD card with the phone
Maybe you can give it a shot... but please backup all your current data on the SD card first, or use another card
Good luck
PS: Gold card trick worked fine for me... Singapore purchased IS
Disable/uninstall all powermanagers and task managers. Like juice defender and others.
SD card format could work, but its to timed I guess.
If you are charging overnight, use the charger u got with your phone and make sure it has some space so you don't overheat.
After that and nothing works, a factory reset is one of your only options...

No-one appears to have had this issue on this phone yet, and not for this exact reason, which makes me think it's only a small error somewhere. (I hope)
Ever since I got it about a month ago, even before I rooted it or did anything to it, it would randomly reboot with no particular pattern. I've since discovered it's specifically caused by the wifi being left on, and the phone left locked for more than about 15 minutes, regardless of whether any apps are open at all. All in all it only happens when wifi is on, and it's not charging or being used. When being used it never happens, and when it's plugged into USB or the wall charger it never happens, and never when just network data is on, no wifi. And I can leave it with both wifi and data off and it will happily standby for it's whole battery life with no issues.
What is the wifi doing when I leave it locked? does anyone know specifically why it causes this?
Anyone? I use wifi way way more than my data, i want to be able to put it down for 10 minutes!

There may be a corrupted apk somewhere that would be active only when Wi-Fi is on (note that there are some services that are still running in the background even if you think they are none , they are not that easy to find and will most likely restart if you kill them , but it's ok because they need to run) . Reflashing the stock firmware with Odin should do the trick.
Also I presume you haven't overclocked it . If you did , lower down the max frequency a little .
FInally , are there any heating issuses when this happens ?
i've had the same issue with the mini 1. it was gone after i have flashed the stock firmware on it.
my mini 2 has no reboot problems (yet).
Try setting wifi sleep policy to "never" of you have at option in settings>wifi>advanced.
Alternatively, it could be called keep wifi on during sleep, turn it to "always"

Yes! this fixed it! thankyou so much man, I hadn't ever discovered that there was an advanced section to the wifi, finally I can leave my phone unattended without worrying about it rebooting!
I have selected to never keep WiFi on during sleep yet now the tablet continues to run the WiFi as you can see in the pictures. This has forced me to use airplane mode when I am on the go because otherwise the tablet just keeps WiFi on and burns the battery extremely quick. This has been a problem since I updated to 4.2.1. I am not rooted completely stock. A solution would be great because this sucks right now. I have tried clearing the cache in recovery but that didn't solve the problem.
I'm running the latest Paranoidandroid ROM and thought that was the problem. I can't yet post to that developer forum so I was just waiting for the next beta.
I guess it's a problem with 4.2.1 then.

If you don't find a solution you may want to try DataEasyPro from the market. It kills both 3g and wifi as soon as the screen is off and then runs a user defined schedule to turn on 3g or wifi every now and the for a few seconds to keep you upto date with your social world. Works great. There is even a widget so you can turn off the schedule when you are downloading or updating from the play store.

I think it is a 4.2.1 problem. Its hard to say how wide spread it is though because I have only seen a handful of posts about this issue though. To me, this issue is unacceptable. I should not have to enable/disable airplane mode to conserve battery. Especially when the previous version of android prior to the 4.2.1 update handled WiFi sleep settings without a problem. Hopefully a fix will be here soon. My tablet used to have superb battery life without me constantly monitoring it. Now I feel like I have to keep double checking that I remember to use airplane mode so that I don't go to use the tablet and find a nearly depleted battery.

It defaulted back to location reporting.
Check Google now sync, maps and currents.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
It's not google maps itself, it's the android location service. It's always collecting data even if your phone or tabscreen isn't on. This is pretty anoying since google only let you choose between agreeing to run the service in the background or not using it at all. Stupid! How about collecting data only when the device is in use?
Same here. There is a bug report on Google about it.

I highly recommend using an app called Better Battery Stats. You can find the free version here on XDA. It'll tell you if there is an app causing a wakelock. I used it to troubleshoot my Rezound and I'm getting a solid 4-5 hours of screen on time with the extended battery on that because it helped me lock down the apps that were killing my battery.

I was having the wifi on issue as well. Just bought my N7, stock 4.2.1 and not rooted. I followed the tip in point four of this post, which details a simple set up using Tasker, where the unit turns the wifi on and off after the screen turns on or off respectively. The reason for the 10 second delay as is detailed in the link, is to allow for the turning on of your N7 to check the time or other reasons, and then quickly turn it off without the wifi on task being activated.
the screenshot below shows my wifi being stuck on while in sleep mode, even with it set to be never on during sleep in the settings, and the change in behavior once the 2 Tasker profiles we set up.
Cheers
Those of you having issues, have you tried the "only when plugged in" setting? Not sure if it would really matter but that's what I use and mine turns on and off just fine.

Testing that now. Turned off Tasker, and set wifi to the "only when plugged in" setting. It's only been about 30 minutes, but so far it looks like it's behaving the same as before, as in keeping wifi on while in sleep. I'll Let it sleep for a few hours and see what the chart shows.
Cheers
EDIT: So I let my N7 sit for about an hour after switching the above mentioned settings, and you can see in the screenshot below that the wifi is staying on while the unit is not awake. I've set my Tasker profiles to control the wifi once again.
I know it may be fixed by a factory reset, but frankly I'm more than happy with the way Tasker handles the issue.
Cheers
so 6 months later, I am still getting this problem. However it seems only to be with the last update. The tasker method seems to be working well though.

I have this problem too. Not rooted. Probably, while charging this problem not appears.
Wrong section. This belongs in Q&A.
And for your problem, few users with.XT and XTX also reported similar problems. They are known as SoD (Sleep of Death).
There is no known fix yet. One users took it back to the store and the the Sony tech guru told him it's an isolated problem and he got a new one. So I suggest you go back to the store.
For anyone using adw launcher, one user reported that that caused his SoD. When he uninstalled that it was gone. Can be an app.
Try factory reset, and start first day without installing apps. And day by day add a new app, this way you can rule out if apps cause the problem.
Also format internal and external sdcard. Don't just empty them by wiping, you should really format, so no traces of possible app malfunction can be found back by the system.

Did I help? please press thanks button
after several days of testing, it doesnt hang on mine for 3 days already.
i guess its because there is a additional line in build prop "dalvik.vm.heapsize=36m" that cause this? this also cause my Need For Speed Most Wanted to force close too.
i also increase min clock freq to 594MHz.
also run TempMonitor(paid) on my notification bar.
not sure the above method works for most of u.. but try if it works.
I've got this problem since the first day. Got the phone, booted it up without even installing a sim card/downloading anything, plugged it into the charger, and it froze.
Since then it would go a few days without freezing, or it would freeze 3 times a day. The freezing always happen in standby mode.
Since it froze on a fresh system with no apps installed, it can't be app-related. There are users who have never experienced this problem, so I suppose the only way is to return the phone or take it to your local sony service center.
Normally it would just hang there and you'd have to pull the battery out. There was once where it hung and the phone got incredibly hot, and battery would be drained really fast.
Currently I am experimenting with keeping WiFi OFF, and surprisingly the phone has been fine for 4 days straight without freezing now. Its just something I'm trying and by no means this is a fix, but returning the phone to a sony store isn't an option for you, you might want to see if this works for you.
for those still having SOD, maybe u can try this. not sure it helps or not. because before i install jellybean, i review the code in build.prop first. so that is why it didnt happen on me for 2 weeks. well, i test it out yesterday.
use either ES file explorer or Root explorer, go to system -> build.prop.
find this line dalvik.vm.heapsize=36m, put a # in front of it to disable this code.
it could be because there is another similar code, thus conflict. u can find another similar line at the bottom of build.prop.
hope it helps!

I have had JB installed for almost 3 months now and it still sleeps very bad. I was so desperate to get it to sleep properly that i disabled auto sync, restricted background data for most apps and i disabled a lot of 'm. that didn't work. The highest wakelock in bbs is audioOut_2 but there's no real answer on whats causing this problem (for some people it's viber but i'm not using that) does any of you have the same problem? My drain on 3G is more than 3%/hour, that's way more than my xperia arc used to have.

I've been reading around forums and stuff. Trying to gather any information I can. From what I've read, it's just a bug in the Jelly Bean software. But of course, it could also be an app that is causing the wake ups.

That will most likely fix your problem.
