So how exactly do I root? - HTC Incredible S

Now I just bought an Incredible S and I want to root it and install a custom ROM but it seems as though HTC seems to hate devs and there are tons of crap blocking it so I was wondering how exactly do I root it?

Power off the phone and then hold the Volume Down key while pressing the Power button. This will boot you into the bootloader screen which lists the HBOOT version, the lock status and the radio version.

This is a very reliable guide. I used it first before achieving S-OFF. I would recommend S-OFF over just root though. Allows you to flash kernels, radios, splash screen, anything.

S-off -> root -> custom rom

errr... root and s-off are entirely different things. I looked at this thread in phandroid forums, and according to it, root just gives you superuser permissions. It gives you the ability to flash things to your phone, custom ROMs. However, when you root your phone, the Radio NVRAM section of the phone prevents you from completely overwriting system partition or at least from changing it. With S-OFF, you flash a custom HBOOT which gives you the ability to overwrite this system partition or in other words, literally do whatever you want to your phone.

I know. Not all of the custom rom require s-off. I suggest to him to s-off -> root -> the install custom rom. Forgot to put i suggest

[Q] Updating Radio - Nexus One

Hi,
I'd like to know if I must have a rooted nexus one to update my radio version.
thanks!
Depends how you do it...
Some of the official Google updates include an updated radio also, so if you can install them, you will get the radio update with them.
The biggest factor is probably which version of Android you are currently on, which radio you currently have, and which radio you want, etc...?

You do not to be rooted. Flash radios via fastboot.

Yes, It's not the only way but the easiest way. Not so easy if you're on gingerbread though because gingerbread root right now still under construction. You'll need to downgrade and root it. Or unlock the boot loader and flash custom rom to acquire root. You can easily flash radio via recovery. Easiest way.

Vivid flashing question

Why is it, to flash anything on a rooted Vivid, you have to flash a boot.IMG? Does that have to do with a not 100% complete unlocking of the bootloader? Or is this just how this device's software is written. Do you think we'll get to a point where it is not needed to flash any ROMs?

You have to flash the boot.img because we dont have s-off. You cant write to the boot partition with s-on. At least thats how I understand it.

I would like some help as well. I have seen so many ways to root that it makes me nervous to pick which way to go. I've done every thing possible with my galaxy s but this phone the vivid seems difficult. Is there a true super one click for the phone that will give me root. Don't want custom rom. Just root access. Thanks. Htc vivid 4.0.3

There is not a true one click root yet for the Vivid there are several methods to root, I use the wcx root method it is easier then the All in one..
I just switched from the captivate to the vivid as well. I feel so lost now, i knew my Cappy inside and out, but with this phone everything seems so complicated. I just want to root the stock rom as well. Ive tried many of the methods but none seem to work.

With any method best to read all the information, wcx has very clear and precise instructions to help you root.
sorry if i sound totally stupid but what is wcx and can i use it if i have started with the tool kit by hasoon2000? i too have had an inspire and rooted it have had tilt 2 and rooted it and even installed android but this is not the same. i too have bricked a vivid trying and did a warranty exchange and want to try again but am leary. even tried to revive the bricked device but could not. can still get to bootloader but am kinda lost from there. help! pleasee!

i would recommend just using the all in one toolkit, the reason your vivid is stuck on the white htc screen is you flashed a wrong kernel relock your bootloader run the stock att ruu unlock bootloader flash custom kernel flash custom rom and enjoy, personally i use Holic's 0.7 rom it is by far the best for me wcx is also very good

none if you want working wifi

Got permission to root and clean up stock rom or load custom.

I received the SGH-i957 for work and they told us not to add any weird apps. What I want to do is remove some the crappy AT&T apps to use less resources. I have rooted an EVO 4g and a HTC Arrive Windows Phone as well as my old HTC Touch Diamond. I have been reading the different threads and I am just curious what you guys think the best method is?
It really doesn't use more resources

If your work said to not mess with apps then I wouldn't really root it.
If you don't care about that, then just follow the rooting thread. I personally like the kernel root method

I will go into more detail I guess. I want to backup how they gave it to me and run it custom, be it remove apps or a new rom. I am worried about some kind of privacy issues. With my HTC Evo 4g I could backup the original rom completely and then uninstall programs or install a new rom.

Flash twrp and make a nandroid backup then do your root process.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda premium
Yeah, I am definitely rooting it. It is ungodly slow with only a few programs on it and it keeps using at&t data even though I have removed all widgets and have very few apps installed. I know that know one wants to hear me say this but every time I use Android I dislike it more and more. I am sorry if I offend anyone.

Ok, I got permission from the boss to root and either clean up the stock rom, remove crap, or load a custom rom. So should I just follow the guide in this and if I have to run a custom rom use the on in this thread. Do I have to use the twrp and nandroid backup to make a backup? Or can I restore the stock rom buy using Method 2 after I follow the Method 1 in the root guide?

Stock Rooted Odex/Deodex

Disclaimer: Flash this ROM at your own risk. I am not responsible for what you do on your device. I left this stock to provide a base for anybody that wants to use it. Mod this rom how you want. Just please remember to give credit where credit is due.
This is a pure stock rooted rom. It has items like busybox, init.d support and so forth. No apps were added or removed. Both Odexed and Deodexed versions below.
This is using stock unmodified kernel from HTC. Kernel source can be grabbed from HTCDev

That option was there before too, but it reset it to "off" after updating. It's off by default in the shipped rom too, for some odd reason.
