[Q] Strange Crashing+Boot Loop Behaviour - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Hoping I can get some assistance. I've been using a stock 4.04 ICS ROM (kernel LRK) with a rooted Notecore kernel for the better part of a year without any issues.
My problems started a few days ago when I noticed that my battery wasn't lasting as long as it normally does. I turned off the phone and recharged it fully, then reset the battery stats but it didn't alleviate my problems, instead a few hours later while trying to browse some website, I noticed a terrible screen flicker followed by a soft crash (as in the phone turned unresponsive, screen was off for a few minutes and then restored to lock screen on its own) and I noticed that my battery went from 68% to 18%.
I tried using the phone and the same thing happened again, this time the battery showed 5% remaining and soon after the phone turned off completely as if the battery was completely drained. I put it on charge overnight. When I tried turning on the phone, it was stuck at the boot screen and would not finish loading.
Since I was using an emmc erase disabled kernel, I factory wiped/flashed to a stock Jelly Bean ROM and managed to restore my phone for the most part. It was working correctly while I was trying to set things up until I got to linking my google account (I had skipped this during set up)to download my contacts and settings.
The phone crashed (for the lack of a better term) as soon as my contacts and settings were loaded and now is stuck in a boot loop.
Battery shows about 70% charged.

usually i think its because of how every person use the charging procedure. if you leave you phone on charge for a long time even when its full.. it reduces the life of battery ... this i have seen on lot of phones..

System stopped charging/Massive Battery Drain

So earlier today my phone went from 90% to 15% charge instantly. I went to the Verizon store to see about a battery, obvious possible issue. They wanted to reset my phone to factory default but being rooted and on a custom rom, this would not work. Made some excuse about not loosing all my data, grabbed the phone and back to the office.
Imaged the system back to LG stock with root and removed CWM and all the sudden everything works fine. Its current at 65% charge. Before it would not charge over 15%.
Just thought I would share. Anyone else have an issue like this? It was completely random. Phone has been fine on revolt 1.0 for since it released, before that decrapped 1.0. odd that switching back made it work. The guy at verizon said that factory resets will often fix this issue...
H.
I had something like that happen, but my phone was running hot as well. It happened following a spontaneous reboot, the battery never able to charge as fast as it was discharging . I didn't get as far as you to test stock again for other reasons. Here was my thread as I tried to figure it out. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216468
Well it is working fine now however I forgot to disable updating and it updated last night and I lost root...

off and on. I am an IT guy so I am in and out of my office.
Welp it has happened again...
I am rooted on decrap 1.0 with CWM. Today it has run completely dead in under 5 hours with no usage. I am trying to charge it enough to get in so I can remove CWM before I take it to Verizon as the first thing they will want to do is factory reset it, only need 5 min so I can run revotoolkit.
This is the suck. While I like the phone I am also really starting to regret this phone.
Oddly enough it is charging normally. This battery sudden drain is weird.
I understand your frustration.....mine behaves that way occasionally too. Plus the spontaneous reboots are becoming more frequent as well
[I'm Revolting -- are you? Beamed directly into your brain by Revolt 1.3]
Diddo last week. So Squigs, suggested a data wipe. So I did it and flashed revolt. Well setting up the LG/Verizon stuff was a no go, so I went homeless. I did my initial set up, and then pushed the Revolt. I have been running golden now. I just wonder if there is a way to run 2 roms at the same time, or a double rom. Because my battery life was 4 hours before I did a system wipe, this info was via my battery widget, but when I wiped everything, I have 15 hours when I start my day. I had calibrated my battery prior to all of this as well.
That is the odd part about it, it works fine for a week or so then bam, the battery goes wonky... Then returns to normal, it seems after a battery pull.
That's no good. Sorry to hear it happened again. Running Decrap 1.1 and I haven't had it happen again yet *knock on wood*
I need to find what is eating up the resources. The phone says the android OS is eating over 64% of the battery and the phone is not being used.
Android OS on my phone generally uses close to 80 or 90% on my phone. With that I still got 12 hours yesterday on the stock battery before I was at 3% battery and plugged in. Try a data reset if you already haven't and if that doesn't work I would say you need either a new phone or battery.
My phone has done this multiple times. Once in a while ill get a text. It'll vibrate for 2 minutes with the screen off. Then reboot with 40% less battery

So I ran it dead, charged to 100% and while still on charge ran a battery calibration app (as the app instructed) and I am back again getting 20+ hours on really light usage, 6 - 8 on moderate usage. This is weird. I have 2 upgrades on my other lines, I am really thinking about getting a bionic, reports are it gets exceptional battery life and then selling the revo.
Sigh... while not eating as bad it is still ripping through. I got 1 good day and now it is back. It has been off charger for just over and hour, no usage, and it is down 6% already. Frustrating.
recently experienced the same issue. had a random 2-3 day spurt where the battery was dead by noon.....then all of a sudden, it returned to normal. never did figure out why.
recently received a new phone (but same battery)....installed Home-Less....currently experiencing much better battery life.
from previous posts, sounds like you bought thru verizon......if not, and you bought thru best buy.....i think they will order you a new battery pretty much no questions asked.
After I got my replacement phone about a week ago, I downgraded, rooted, ran homeless battery was doing ok....well, just yesterday my battery when to crap again...just an hour and down to 70....i really wish I could figure out wtf...

I have reverted to stock rom with root. I am using Titanium Backup to freeze the bloatware to see if it has something to do with the modified ROMs. Crossing my fingers.
from my experience, the custom ROM actually helped my battery issues. my problems were encountered when i was un-rooted. what kills my battery the most is the fact that i work on the fringe of both 3g and 4g....causing the phone to constantly cycle between 3g/4g/1x. when i'm on straight 4g, i can last all day without a problem.
i'd be interested in hearing your results.

Samsung Galaxy S plus random shutdown

hi guys, i'm getting really pissed off right now
i''ve got my phone for 3 months now and it worked like charm till the last month
every time my phone shutdown randomly , and when i restart it, my battery level is under the 10%
even if i charge it the whole night till 100%, after i use it a few minutes it shutsdown and the battery will be very low.
sometimes it doesn't even turn on anymore.
i can't use my phone now only when its charging because it doesn't shutdown then.
I've tried everything that i could think of, i've recalibrated the battery , installed different roms but i got the problem with every rom.
i've even tried it with a ics rom but still got the same problem
someone please help me
my phone had the same problem i have flash any costum rom but nothing and then i have flashed a stock original rom for fix that....and then retry a costum rom.
have you try to wipe /system /sdcard /data /cache /delik-cache and then flash a stock original rom with odin ?

I have the exact same problem, am about to buy a new battery tomorrow unless someone else has another solution? This might not be the proper forum but in here at least many i9001 users will read it.
I've had this problem for about a week, was very annoying while on holiday. I've tried using BroodROM BE 1.0, Stock KQE and now back to stock KPG.

Well yes I'm going to try a different battery soon but the odd thing is after my battery charge seems to drop down to 5% or so, it starts charging to about its original charge level without a charger connected. So it's basically 80%->drop to 5%->charge back to 60% without charger.
i'll try now to do a hard reset, go back to stock rom, then reinstall an costum rom,
will tell you if it works!
Plz mods remove/delete this sheeyat.. this is

i have used TeamWin Recovery for wipe all partition becouse with hard reset don't wipe /system and internal sd.

I thought I was the only one with this problem. I charge my battery to full and it starts draining normally. Then, when around 30-80% battery remaining, it turns off. It only turns off when you use it for a while, when the screen is off it stays on normally. After rebooting it turns off within a minute or so. This continues for a few reboots with the battery level remaining roughly the same. Eventually after a few boots it shows 3-4% of battery, after which I of course have to charge. Also tried calibrating and tried different roms but it still remains. I ALSO SWAPPED MY BATTERY WITH A FRIEND BUT IT DIDN'T HELP! It worked like a charm for him but I still got turn offs with his battery.
If i were you Guys, i would install stock rom and hand in my phone under warranty ( of course if you still have it ). Because if this occurs even when u swap battery, let samsung play with you phone then
Its not your battery..restore your phone to the way it was and give it to samsung
i'm getting pissed of now, even with the stock rom it randomly shutsdown.
i don't have any warrenty so i can't give it back to samsung
In case anyone's still wondering, in my case it did turn out to be a fried battery. If anyone else is experiencing the same issues I was, just check your battery to see whether or not it is swollen. If it's bigger than it should be, that probably means it's fried and you should replace it. I'm happily running custom roms without any trouble again now, and battery life is awesome!

Hi guys,
I also have this problem, my phone randomly turns off and when I turn it on, it shows much less remaining battery percentage than before. (please see attached image) After turning on the value is increasing, sometimes from ~5% to 30-40% or more...
Now I have CM10 Jelly Bean flashed, but CM9 did the same sometimes but much more rarely than on JB. Today the phone 'died' three times until noon.

Yeah that's the exact same problem I had. In my case it turned out to be a fried battery, see if it's swollen or not, if you lay your battery on a table it should stay still and not wobble around. If the battery's not flat but swollen that means your battery is fried. In this case good news because you can easily replace it

unfortunately it is absolutely not swollen, its fully flat :\
besides this I put out the battery now and put it back and it is showing only 2% percent of battery so maybe my battery is wrong

[Solution] Flickering screen, poor battery backup, sudden discharge [n7000, Note]

A month or so back I started facing weird problems with my year old Galaxy Note, n7000:
1. After reboot, the battery would go down by 15-20% and then without charging the battery %age would gradually increase by 5-10%
2. lots of flickering on screen followed by auto shutdown whenever the battery %age went below 15-20% after normal usage
3. Very poor battery backup (I blamed most of this to the Rom Mods I had been installing at that time- only partially correct!)
I am sure that many of you might have been facing such problems and running from forum to forum to get a solution- I did.
Solution:
Get your battery replaced- most of us have had our Note for a year and some months now...life of the battery is approx 1 year for regular use, thus, the stock battery that we got with our Note is well past....
I never faced the above problems after battery replacement!
Hope this helps others like me!!
I started having this problem after getting a new battery, my old battery which was weak never showed flickering. But this new one which is original samsungs battery at below 15% show flickering and sudden discharge despite a good battery time.

I got rid of the damn problem after getting new ones...Is it possible that the batteries you bought are not genuine/fake?
Which ROM are you on- the Stock one or some mod-rom?
When I was searching for a solution to my battery issues some members suggested battery-calibration and full charge-full discharge cycle to get rid of the problem. Both the solutions suggested at that time did not work for me.
There was also a solution about cleaning the mini-USB connector which gets seriously dirty collecting grime from our pant pockets! That did work for me initially when the battery was good.
Please let me know if any of the above helps you.

Guys - Me too have the same issue, but this started immediate after updating the Jelly Bean 4.1.2. It never happened while on official ICS.
I could observe the battery is very much thick now, which is a symptom of over charging. The screen flickers and brings phone down abnormally.
After connecting the charger for a 5 seconds, suddenly the battery level shoots to original state from where it went down. Most frustrating, it happens very frequently.
I am not sure if the same will persist even after replacing with a new battery. Or I would need to go back to ICS again.
Any suggestions?
Cheers!
If the battery is bloated then it's better to get a new one.
Erm... is this thread still up?
I just wanted to know if the bloated battery would cause boot issues, stuck on the model screen?
I would guess the problem is with the bloated battery's voltage is insufficient to power up the systems... i guess
I need confirmations... thank you in advance

4.1.2 xxlsz deodexed by eybee
The problem is, after I restored most of my data, apps and system data separately, the screen flickers a little bit and then the restore process completed without any problem. After that I restart the phone, stuck at the model screen only for unknown reason. The data is also from previous xxlsz which I had trouble with some system app crashed but fixed by returning to another backup though.
So, currently I'm leaving the phone without any data restored, only stock fresh out of the box xxlsz with titanium backup only installed. So far the phone is quite stable, I've turned off the adaptive power adjustment in display as well as lowest brightness just in cast it might occur again.
I've been reflashing xxlsz a lot this morning, over 3-5 times due to stuck in boot logo and model screen. Even though flashed the latest philz 4.90.8, it would just revert back to the old philz 4.8x with cwm 6.0.2.8
One last thing, my batter bloated pretty bad about half of it has been expanded. I mean from the bottom part (no copper connections), half of it has reached out of the body.
Well,
hppend to me b4, flickering issue below 10%. It was bloated. Bought new one. Bloated again after 6months. Again, bought a new one and it can last only 7 hrs without switch on data.
This is what we get from massive production company.

I seem to have the same issue
1. Battery drains rather bad
2. Screen flickering
3. Auto shutdowm
Used the battery in my wifes n7000 , however no issues at all
Only seem to happen on my phone.
I flashed it to stock std 4.1.2 , however problem still persist. auto shutdown few times a day
Gets worse when i use an external SD
@amogh you can check your battery voltages and battery temperature and compare that to optimum values. you can also use apps like AnTuTu battery tester.

Flashing another rom again wont solve much of the problem, if you happens to have the phone stuck in around bootloop and able to go into cwm, brace yourself, this process can get very repetitive to solve because a mere battery able to do such a problem. I had these experience before about 2 months ago before buying a new battery. Hope this link helps you understand a bit more of the battery

[Q] battery issues....four hour charge time...help!

ok, I recently replaced my bionic due to a shattered screen. the one verizon sent me didn't come with a battery so I'm using the same old one. so when I rooted my phone on ics, a couple weeks later I noticed that my phone was taking awhile to recharge. with the battery hd app it said that from about ted percent it would take nearly 4 hours to charge! as opposed to the usual hour, hour an a half. then I updated to jelly bean an due to my internal storage becoming unmounted, I had to fxz an lost root altogether. so after getting my internal storage back an waiting what seemed like a month for a root exploit, my battery was back to charging normally, which was pretty sweet. so today I booted ubuntu an rooted my bionic using the samba exploit recreated by the master genius of moto exploits himself, all hail Dan! after playing around an getting back to my old setup I drained a full battery. I plugged in an yet again battery hd. is reporting a 4 hour charge time, plugged into ac! so my question is, does anyone know what could be causing this?! from what I know so far it seems that having root access is the cause. but I can't put the two together an understand how that is an I don't have the kinda time for a 4 hour wait on a charge....somebody help!
Try to delete the battery stats. Maybe the phone is traiting the battery like a 10000mah one and recharges it a while.
Let me know if it worked!
yea i tried that right off the bat. in recovery, with a battery calibration app, and manually. nothin helps
It could be one of two things: one, there could be a problem with your ROM's battery app, therefore displaying incorrect data. Another issue could be the battery itself, as these batteries degrade over time so it could have gone flat and no longer hold an efficient charge.

hopeully its just the rom. i'm installing safestrap right now so i can jump over to another one and see how the battery acts there, maybe help narrow it down. an now i'm thinking it probly is the rom as the battery holds a charge like it always has. it just charges super slow. if i use the wifi tether or download any big files such as a zip file for a rom, it actually drains the battery very slowly while plugged in to ac. around 1 percent every five or ten min, depending how much i have goin on at the time. i clearly remember when it started happening. i checked once and it showed a normal charge time between 1 an 2 hours. i fiddled around did some things, of which i now cant remember what i did (install apps for example) an ten minutes later it was in this state where it takes 4 hours to charge. i've tried deleting apps, calibrating the battery, hopefully it works normal on a different rom its turning out to be quite the inconvience. Thanks for you help and input!!

ok so I installed a different rom on the safe system using safe strap an I was still having issues. tried a different rom and same thing. I went back to the unsafe side and did a master reset on the stock rom and it seems to have fixed the problem. I'm curious to see what it is um doing that's causing it as this is the second time its happened. gonna pay close attention to the possibility of it happening again to hopefully pin point the origin.

If you tried various versions of different ROMs, and you're still experiencing the same issues, it's probably an issue with the hardware, so I would check the battery to make sure.
its back to normal now. But I'm still pretty curious as to how my stock rom was causing the problem across different roms even using safestrap. an fxz fixed her right up

i even try to on it but it does not that means all the charge is just gone away...
can anyone help me whats wrong? i have Dr. Ketan rom L3

Just flash the stock firmware and kernel, and see if it solves the problem. If not then you have a dead battery on your hands.
I also have the same problem, it also seems to happen at 30 percent. I'm pretty sure we need to change our battery

Well its the easiest way to see if it is rom/kernel related or if something is wrong with the hardware.

ok thank you. just one more question just to be safe, should i just download the firmware from sammobile and flash via odin in download mode right?
and another fellow here advised me to calibrate my battery to check if its hardware or software. he told me to charge to 100% and delete this file data/ system / and delete BatteryStats.bin use to 0% and then charge 100%. should i do it before going stock or not?
had the same issue a few days back (f2 stock rom and kernel), battery dropped from 17% to 0 within a few seconds.
but this occured only once, the next cycle was ok, so i guess it was a calibration issue!

Easiest to try battery calibration first. If that doesn't work after a couple of cycles then just flash the stock rom from Sammobile using Odin.

ok thank you guys, i guess i just have a ****ty life and very very ****ty luck happens to every phone tablet i buy. FML
There are 3 possible reasons this happens - broken phone, broken battery or software problem.
I think the first one is unlikely so you need to figure out which of the last 2 is.
Make a back up of your current rom and install an official TW software. If this still doesnt fix your problem, its most likely the battery. A new genuine battery is around 20$.
PS - i think that the battery stats bin file is automatically deleted once you fully charge the battery anyway but you can still try it altough i doubt it will fix it.

same problem here
And here.
This is typical of a dead battery. Your best bet is to buy a new one.
Less than a year is short but not unheard of. Overheating (especially when 100% full), deep discharge, very intensive use (especially with quick charging) and manufacturing defects all can kill a battery.
I'm on CM12.1 with this problem. I've tried battery calibration and tried a new battery but its still apparent.
Will be trying a factory reset as my last resort.
This is happening to 2 phones in my household it started after the upgrade to 5.0.1 one note is Tmobile the other sprint....highly doubt we both developed battery problems RIGHT after we both ota upgraded.
Same here at ~13%.
I do always either fast charge or QI charge.
So far I've tried:
- Battery calibration
- Bought new battery
- Factory reset
Still happens!!
Maybe I'll try TW flash or modem change
Weird, I have this exact same problem as the original post. I'm running BOC5 on the 9105. It's a sporadic problem only occurring on occasion

I've been running Lollipop for ages until this problem happened. Frankly, I still prefer Lollipop with this problem.
