[Q] Questions concerning apps and the new JB update - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi folks
Still loving my Note (XXLRT),really enjoying the new Flipboard, very useful as everything is all in one place, but I have some questions about apps:
- If i dont use an app like CharOn, SocialHub or Google+ and I do not update it from Play Store, will it still run in the background using resources without its update.
- Does anyone know if Samsung have included "Flipboard"and the Note 2 Sidebar in our Stock JB 412 update and does the Note still have UMS (USB Mass Storage) mode in 412, as I really dont like the errors that come with MTP.
Unless ive missed it.I read that LRT (Germany) had the side bar with it
Cheers

Yeah, if they have the ram then they will be cached in the ram. There is a way to get past this though (even in ICS), if you are not rooted you can still "disable" a lot of the apps that come with the phone, simply go to settings>application>all now when you select an app then you can sometimes disable it (or after removing it's updates). Disabled apps go to the bottom of the list.

You can get flipboard from google play anyway, but I thik it comes already iinstalled with it. As for the sidebar then the multiwindow is working and we will have it. UBS - I read somewhere that they have implemented it but I cannot find it on the latest leaks (don't really know where that option is).

Much appreciated, thanks for the quick reply. I knew you could disable some apps, but didnt realise that you had to remove the update too disable some.
Mass storage is found in Settings > More... > USB Settings, I just find with JRiver 17, now 18, Winamp even WMP.. when i was using it.. MTP just wouldnt work when Sync'ing.and playlist were empty, you cant beat UMS for ease of use, plus 99% of people these days all have WiFi for the cloud uploads.. so Why.
Sidebar is great news.. and Yeah.. I just got an update on Play for Flipboard, so that sortd that..
Thats all great news, thanks alot .

Mini Uninstaller (fast way of uninstalling apps)

Hello,
I have with me an app I would like to share with the HD2, and XDA community which I previously found on the Google Market which now doesnt exist anymore.
I managed to copy out the APK and I will attach below.
The app is good for
Listing all your installed apps quickly so you can remove them
Smooth scrolling
Sort by Name/Size/Last Installed/Install Location
Search
Just needs to build cache during first launch, and doesnt work on LANDSCAPE, which are the only disadvantages of it.
I personally use the Last Installed sorting mechanism, to view all the last installed and remove. I install quite a number of apps and usually when I found that it sucked, I enter this app quickly and remove them (latest apps appear on top of the list)
I have been using this since 2.2 FROYO and it doesnt seem to give errors back then. On GB 2.3, I noticed an occasional error message :
[Opps Sorry I got error ] but this doesnt stop it from uninstalling the application.
I have given this app rigorous testing and it has survived 2.2+ and 2.3+ Androids application removal, whether it produces errors or not.
I also noticed that this app has been removed from the Google Market, without reason from the developer / Google. Hence I would not mention anything about future release or support, neither do I know whether it would damage your device/ operating system but I certainly ONLY been using this app to remove applications and it has been TREMENDOUSLY awesome. Give it a try, and let me know whether you found similiar apps in terms of speed, features and outlook.
Credits to its developer, which I remember to be known as MINIGUY after a few Googles. I also couldnt find this application anymore hence I am posting it here
If this has been posted before I apologize.
Dont forget to click the THANKS button if you found this app useful
On another note, this applications is FREE and is not WAREZ
It sounds like appsaver.. is it better?

i think ive tried appsaver but this is an app that lists out all your apps pretty quickly and lets u just choose to uninstall them
its like add/remove programs, but way way faster than anything ive tried especially 200 apps
default manage applications takes nearly 15 seconds to load, while this takes 1-2 seconds, tops
Thanks for the app. I will give it a try! :0)
I realized that this application was ripped and published as someone else's work as follow up
its called "Uninstaller" in market , which uses the same error message, logo, text, font, settings, buttons, icons
you are free to use both as they produce the same results and same settings

Disabling Apps in ICS

I found this in the "ICS: What's Different and New" PDF file on the HTC web site:
"You can now disable an app if you no longer want it (but are unable to uninstall it). Disabling an app removes it from All Apps and prevents it from launching. To disable an app, go to Settings > Apps > All and scroll down to the app. You will see the Disable option. Note: If you do not see a Disable option, it means that the app can either be uninstalled or is core functionality and cannot be disabled."
I have a bunch of apps that I don't use still starting up (and re-starting after I use Advanced Task Killer to stop them), and taking a lot of memory. I'm going to see if this helps.
If anything this was a very big plus to me. I don't intend on installing any 3rd party ROMs until after the warranty period and this was a huge issue for me. Seems to work very well.

Well there's your problem. You're still using a non-root task killer. That's gonna hurt you more than help. Get rid of it. If you're rooted, use Autokiller Memory Optimizer if you truly run that tight on RAM. Otherwise, let the OS's improved handling of apps and services take care of it.

Thanks for the feedback. Your last comment may be the best for now. As it turned out, I couldn't find many apps I wanted to stop that had the feature to disable. Most only allowed a force close or uninstall. I don't want to uninstall them. I just don't want them running unless I start them. Actually, I think this is partly a developer issue. Everyone thinks that their software always needs to be running in the background and polling. Not if I use it once a week -- or less.
One very nice feature of the new update is that the Carrier iQ app has been removed.

Any way to go *without* samsung bloatware?

Hi folks,
<rant>
I am running a N7100 with no Samsung apps, using OmniROM (4.4.2). My first smartwatch was a sony using a pretty slim manager, that didn't require any separate app store or anything funky. Now I got that gear watch for xmas and I am pretty annoyed as it took me some time to figure out that the GearManager is pretty much bound to samsung libraries and stuff (and an APK in /system/apps/ )
</rant>
Now the big question: Is there any way to get notifications and stuff running without installing tons of software on the phone?
I'm not sure about the other phones, but with the note 3, the current gear manager can let you push any notification that would normally show in the task bar, to show up on the gear. I think there are some issues with secure emails, but most should work without anything else other than gear manager.
Now I say I'm not sure about other phones besides the note 3, because they were all added to the compatibility list later, and not sure if there could be something that's not been ironed out yet.
If your wanting notifications without gear manager though, your out of luck without some serious modifying, if it's even possible at all.

I'm running one of the CM 11 nightlies with no Samsung bloatware at all on my phone, alas it's an unsupported Galaxy Nexus.
After fiddling with the individual Gear apps and Gear Manager, I'm able to get contacts, call logs (and incoming call notifications), TripIt and a few other tidbits working, but not much else.
Gear Manager seemingly works fine on my phone (sans a few crucial items like weather), but even after selecting additional notifications like Hangouts and Gmail, they don't show up on the phone.
Even with all of the provider apks installed and the phone / watch being paired, there's still a lot of missing functionality. My guess is that a lot of that Samsung "bloatware" handles a lot of this functionality, and (at least for now) it's baked into the OS and is required if you want full use of the Gear.

... and that's maybe one of the reasons for the stock firmware of samsung being a memory hog, slowing down the devices by eating much too much RAM.
Looks like there's no clean solution in sight...

Which /system apps can be safely uninstalled?

I have recently upgraded my Xperia ZR to Lollipop 5.1.1 stock Sony ROM. I have rooted it. One big irritant I am facing is lack of internal storage space. Among the main culprits here are apps in /system (both /system/app as well as /system/priv-app) that are taking up precious space in internal memory (only 4.6 GB is user available out of total 8 GB) in the form of .DEX files.
My goal here is safety first. I know that I may not need them now, but I should be able to install them in future if necessary. Hence I am mainly looking at applications that are not required for normal functioning of the phone and could be installed from the Play Store if necessary later (considering that so many are already on the Play Store including many Sony applications)
Do all these applications necessarily need to run as system applications for their proper functioning? If I can install them as a regular user app, I can use Link2SD and send both the APK and DEX files to SD card with a link on internal memory thus greatly saving space.
Here are some I have shortlisted:
Google applications
1. Maps
2. YouTube
3. Google Search (the APK is called Velvet) - I do not use Google Search app, I do not want OK Google.
4. Drive - I do not use it now. May be in future.
5. Chrome - it is just a browser. Will it not work equally well as a user app?
Sony applications
1. File Commander (not exactly a Sony application but available on the Play Store and is already pushing ads, is there any unique functionality that only File Commander can provide and not other file browser? WiFi Direct?)
2. Album - is it not available on Play Store too? Can I install it from there?
3. Movies - same as Album.
4. Walkman or Music
5. What's New - not needed for me.
6. Movie Creator - I doubt I will be routinely stitching up videos on the phone. Still it would be nice to have in case needed in future.
7. Podcast - I do not listen to podcasts now but in future if the situation changes.
8. Movie Creator - there are 2!!!!!
9. Xperia with Facebook
10. Xperia Lounge Pass
11. Sony Music
12. Xperia with Twitter
13. Xperia Calender Sync - seems to deal with Facebook
14. Xperia Social Engine****
Please go through the list and suggest.
Greetings, you are on the same boat as I am, and yes I have uninstalled all the apps you have mentioned in the list. I have deleted even some other apps too. Also you may wanna keep "whats new" >> This app is like the update center so any new OS updates will be shown from here only and Xperia ZR will have a bug fixing update soon.

Webview is needed by many applications to display webcontent right? What did you mean by 'its same bugs'?
Exchange probably is related to Microsoft Exchange which is a corporate email thingy(?) and hence I too may not need it.
What about Chrome? I actually am a Firefox person but some sites may need Chrome. Hence I want to keep it but does it really need to be a system app?
For example ; Application details in Google play store can't not show.. Iys says play store stopped.. And My sms Application Truemessenger is too.. Stopped..
I don't use Chrome.. Deleted.. I use lovely Dolphin browser with Flash.player

I don't remember them now, because using CM. Also why not try TB feature ? If space is your concern, sort apps by size and you will get which useless app is eating your internel memory. Also use "backup > verify > uninstall app" when un installing imp system apps. If they cause FC , you can restore them later.
Yeah its a pretty old device, soon you may be the only one (Hunting for the next Mobile )
---------- Post added at 10:08 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 AM ----------
Also some apps may seem like redundant (2 movie creator apps ) but in reality they are very useful. One used for merging and editing Video clips and the other used for PlayMemories Slideshow for album. These apps are very small in size and doesn't clog your internals. Look for the big one.
You shouldn't uninstall system apps, as they won't free up any space; if you want to free space, uninstall the apps on the /data partition, i.e. the apps that you can uninstall normally. If you want to improve performance, just disable the app in question. Deleting it does absolutely nothing that disabling wouldn't do at much less risk. I'm a little surprised nobody else has pointed this out.

My stock N6 32GB becomes laggy after about 2 days use and requires rebooting

I have this strange problem with my N6 in that after about 2 days use it becomes quite laggy and unusable requiring a restart. When this happens the camera becomes unusable as with HRD+ off, taking a picture from pressing the shutter button to an image being captured can take several seconds. This isn't really acceptable.
And every now and then I clear the cache also which helps but seems a bit drastic.
Can anybody think what might be causing this? It's quite annoying as you might expect and didn't appear to be like that when I first bought the phone.
I don't run anything fancy and use a standard wallpaper (no active ones) and very few if any background tasks apart from the usual Google ones.
Maybe when (and if) Nougat comes out for it, it might improve but it seems strange that a phone would do that.
Thanks

An app or Google play services.
Try Advanced Task killer and uninstall the Google services updates.
Flash a custom ROM and use a good Kernel... Problem solved.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA-Developers mobile app
If your phone doesn't run hot without reason, you should backup your important internal stuff to PC or USB and flash a clean factory image to wipe the phone totally.
First i would try shayneflashindaily's advice.
Thanks. I installed Advanced Task Killer and killed a few tasks that I didn't know were running and that seemed to help. Not clear to me how to uninstall Google Drives l Services Update.
It does run hot sometimes for no apparent reason but while I'm happy to do factory reset I'm not sure I want to flash a custom ROM or kernel.
Doesn't a different kernel require root? The bootloader is unlocked but I never was able to gain root and given I use credit card payment over NFC I think root would break that.
I had the same problem and i've opened the very same thread.
No matter what advice i followed or what app i used to fix the problem, neither truly fixed it 100%. You will experience the same problem after a bit, along with low battery and general hotness of the phone.
Only one cure to it: decrypt your phone. It's the only way and that fixed 100% my problems. So you need a force encrypt disabled rom such pure nexus and Fed Patcher. That means you need to install also TWRP.
The main culprit is the forced encryption.

Root will break NFC paying, but some managed to unroot add card number and root again.
Decryption will speed up a bit the performance, but you need root access.
A prerooted stock rom of Danvd is a good choice, but take care with rooting as long as you need apps that refuse to work with rooted phones.

That seems like a bridge too far for me. The only reason I considered rooting the N6 before was to enable the notification light which apparently does exist on the N6 but requires Root for LIghtflow to use it. I decided the alternative of the Amoled notifications was good enough and provided more information

You have to check out the Android device manager in Settings - security - device administrators.
For more info - follow the link.
https://www.androidpit.com/google-play-services-what-is-it-and-what-is-it-for
The link doesn't work but I can't see anything about who is a device administrator - just a few services like Gmail, Android Pay and Android Device Manager

Try the link again; the last slash is removed. It should work now.
Device admin... Uncheck Android device manager.
I disabled Android Device Manager but still cannot disable Google Play Services as it's greyed out.
Might leave it as I do need Google Play Services
