I just updated to 4.2.1 and rooted
I really hate Chrome and miss the stock AOSP browser I was using on CM10
Is there an easy way to set up that basic/stock browser? Key word "easy" unless I can get some really good step-by-step instructions.
I think loading flash is as easy as installing an APK at that point.
Thanks!

follow the instructions written by Spannaa and use the browser apk attached to turbotab's post.
good luck :good:
if ya need additional help; step by step let me know tbh
jt.one is right. You just need root, a file manager like Root Explorer (superb paid app), ES File explorer or Astro (both free), and the browser.apk from the link above.
1. Rename the 2 BrowserProxyProvider files in /system/app by appending a .bak extension on them.
2. Copy Browser.apk into the /system/app folder.
3. Set the proper permissions (check permissions on another app to see what it should look like).
4. Sideload flash after downloading it from the Adobe website if you don't have it already installed.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm unclear what the proper order is to do this.
OR easier yet......
download the latest Dolphin browser from the market...
and navigate to:
data/data/mobi.mgeek.Tunny/Browser/shared_prefs/
using root explorer or equivalent and delete:
mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser_preferences.xml.
Thus re-enabled flash in dolphin.......

Excellent instructions. I'm about 90% with you, except for #3. I know how to assign permissions, but am unclear about the part to check permissions on another app. Just any old app? So for example I browsed to /system/app and found GoogleEarth.apk. Its permissions are
rw- r-- r--
So browser.apk will have those exact permissions?
Thank you!!!
UPDATE: The download file is browser.zip am I to rename this to APK?

Good video, but it revealed something very important that's missing....
the fact that you can't use bookmarks in the stock browser..... they won't work.
That kills it for me.
Now i'm not sure what to do. Keep Chrome, but not have flash? I use flash-embeded sites almost regularly (just came from CM10) but it was pretty unstable...
Whoa partner. Bookmarks work just fine with the AOSP browser. At the upper right in the browser there is a heart (add bookmark), magnifying glass (search) and an icon with a star in it (bookmarks). It came with many common links, espn, cnn, twitter, facebook, etc. and it is easy to add them. Any page you want to bookmark, just hit the star to add it. I don't think it will sync your existing Chrome bookmarks, but once you manually add them, you can back them up with Titanium backup so you won't have to add them again. Flash works perfectly with the aosp browser and it is fast.
Yes, set the permissions the same as GoogleEarth (long press, permissions). Must be in r/w mode not read only to view or change permissions. The top 3 should be checked for 'Read' and just the top one for 'Write'.
I d/l the browser.apk link in the second post to my computer and it came through as browser.apk. Then I copied it to my phone. If you got browser.zip, did you d/l it directly to the phone? The file that must be copied into /system/app is browser.apk. Look at the browser.zip and see if it can be unzipped and contains browser.apk. If not, try renaming it to browser.apk

You're absolutely correct. I don't know what the guy in the vid was talking about. I was able to get stock browser installed, flash installed, set up bookmarks, set up non-chrome bookmark widget...so the stock bookmark widget which is far superior to Chrome.
Everything the way I like it. Thanks for pointing that out. That's awesome.

ok so my data cable got wrecked (waiting for new one to arrive) and im using swiftp to get files onto my droid so how do i get the boot animation into data/local since astro and my computer wont let me view anything inside the data/ folder? i have terminal emulator app on my phone but not sure how to use the comands. how would i move bootanimation.zip into the correct directory?
Simple fix
Just search "Wireless ADB" on the Market, once you've got it set up (Google is your friend, but seeing as how you're already set up using swiftp sounds like you're good to go lol), do a little more Googling for the Terminal commands you'll need for ADB. Any questions, PM me and I'll do my best to help ya out (^_^)>b
Just use Root Explorer. It'll let you move, delete, copy, etc. any file anywhere all over your phone.

I agree. I just got Root Explorer on the Market and it works very well. You can also extract and compress zips. By far, the best file explorer I've used for Android!
First of all, make a backup!! I am not responsible for the terrible things that can happen to an android device when things go awry lol....
Secondly, I have only tried this using Vegan rom (beta 4, and beta 5.1)... I am assuming it will work with any alternate rom but NO PROMISES!!
TO OBTAIN THE NEEDED FILES:
1) Do a google search for "swype on gtablet (kinda)"
2) Somewhere the search results (it was the very first one when I did the search), you should see a post on the tegratab.com forum entitled "swype on gtablet (kinda)" (posted by rothnic)
3) Download the package on that forum, and extract it. There should be three files located in this package: swype.apk, libswypecore.so, and build.prop.
**Keep the page open as we are also going to use the top of the build.prop file that rothnic posted there!! THANK YOU ROTHNIC!!!!!
INSTALL METHOD USING ROOT EXPLORER
I would complete these steps entirely from your gtab, as it does away with the need to transfer files from a pc, etc!
1) Using root explorer, copy first the swype.apk file, and paste it to \\system\app. Once it is copied, long press on it and click "permissions". The permissions should be set as follows:
Read: Check all three boxes down (for user, group, and others).
Write: Check the first box (for user)
Execute: Check the first box (for user)
2) Now again using root explorer, copy the libSwypeCore.so file, and paste it to \\system\lib. Make sure you mount the \\system\lib folder as "read/write" before copying. Once it is copied, set the permissions exactly as you did for the swype.apk file. Make sure you mount the \\system\lib folder as "read only" again before you exit.
3) Now its time to edit the build.prop file, only we are going to make it easy. Instead of going through and editing it, copy the top of the file that rothnic posted on the tegratab site, and replace the top of your build.prop file with what he has there. Don't edit it or anything, just copy it word for word. I did this in root explorer by doing the following:
Using Root Explorer, browse to \\system. Once in this folder, mark it as "read/write".
Locate the build.prop file, and long press on it.
Select "open in text editor".
Copy the text that rothnic had in the post on tegratab, and use it to replace the text that already exists there at the top of the file. It will fit exactly as the original one that you are replacing did. DO NOT CHANGE THE BOTTOM OF THE FILE AT ALL!!!
When you have copied the text, press the "settings" button, and press "save and exit".
(FYI, I am using Vegantab beta 5.1, and replacing the top of the build.prop file did not do any damage to the tablet at all)
Now restart the tablet.
When the tablet restarts, long press on any text entry field and press "input method".
Swype should be an option. Select it, and start swyping!!
If swype isn't listed, click settings, language and keyboard. Check the box next to swype.
(this will also be a good time to click on swype settings and DISABLE audio feedback, as it will drive you and everyone around you NUTS!!)
Now follow the steps above to set swype as your input method and enjoy!!
INSTALL METHOD USING TERMINAL (Courtesy of Terrypchan)
This can be done without root explorer, BUT you have to be willing to type commands in a terminal emulator. I did it without root explorer by using the terminal emulator app with the VEGAn b5 rom (which is already rooted). The only tricky command you need to do is:
1. su
2. cd /
3. mount -w -o remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Step 3 is how you mount /system as read-write. That allows you to copy the apk to /system/app and to copy the lib to /system/lib. You can also copy build.prop to /system here. I also did the chmod commands here as well, i.e.
chmod 644 /system/lib/libSwypeCore.so
chmod 644 /system/app/Swype.apk
I had already edited the build.prop on another machine where I could use a real text editor.
This is the command to remount /system as read-only:
mount -r -o remount /dev/block/blockmtd3 /system
reboot and I'm Swype-ing away.
any chance you could paste the build prop edit in here? For some reason my browser is cutting off part of it.
Thanx,
I bet the mod deletes this within the hour!
Hmm, wonder how long this post will last
Agreed... I respect the effort tho and his directions are perfect!
Thanks brotha...

Instructions worked perfectly for me with the small substitution of adb push/pull to edit the build.prop (root explorer force closed after I had edited the file and before saving so I said screw it ). Thanks!
Combine this with the rainex fix for screen smoothness and it makes for a pretty good time lol

You don't have to adb it, that's why he recommended root explorer. If you edit it there it automatically makes a backup for you. I've done this with three ROMs, vegan4, zpad3, and vegan5... Never had to use adb

Confirmed Working on the G tab following above steps. Stock TnT Firmware 3389. Working flawless. Sound and swype.

Any downside to editing the build file in this manner?
Can you change it back after it is installed?
Do you have to redo this every time you go to update your rom?

Yes this would need to be redone for each rom.

Wow. I can't believe this is still here! Anyway, on to my question...
Is it possible/advised to edit the build.prop on a PC using a standard text editor like notepad? I ask because the browsers on my GTab don't show the whole of the text we're supposed to copy from tegratab.
Thanks in advance.
Editing on a pc is probably fine, however you have to make sure the formatting stays correct, otherwise it all goes south lol.
I printed out a copy of the top of the build.prop that rothnic posted on the tegratab site and used that for reference when editing on my tab....made it easier to see where I was in the text editor

Seeing as some of the framework needs to be modded for a pre-rooted version of the 1.2 ROM I figured I would throw a little zip together with some stuff to play with. Its nothing special. Instructions:
1. Download the attached zip file to your computer and extract it onto your desktop, your documents, your "taxes 1993" folder, "kittens folder", or wherever you want for that matter.
NOTE: THIS IS NOT CWM FLASHABLE, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
2. Download one of Nemith's ROMs from here.
3. Use winrar, archive manager or any other software you have that can open up zip files and open the rom you downloaded in step 2. Once thats open, click on "system", then "bin".
4. Go back to the files you downloaded and extracted in step 1 and you will see something called 'su' simply drag and drop the 'su' file into that "bin" folder you opened in step 3. It might take a minute to add it to the zip archive so be patient.
5. Once that is done, click the back button in winrar or whatever your using so you will now be in the "system" folder and no longer in /system/bin. You should see a folder called "app", click on it. Once thats open, drag and drop the apks that were included in the zip into there and give them a second to be added in.
6. Once that is done, your free to add any additional apks that you either downloaded or have backed up from a previous setup. (extract some from root explorer before flashing the update if you would like, then copy those on there.)
7. Now that you have all the apks you want added in there, close the zip, put it on your sdcard and flash that bad boy up.
Note: I included 2 launchers in there, VTL and ADW free. You can add both of them if you want and try them out or just pick one or the other. The apk that says something about gojimi is the VTL launcher. Also, feel free to add apps that require root since you have root access thanks to that business with su earlier. This doesnt have the market because BN is gay and their custom framework needs to be hacked, (thank you for the Nook though. ) also, youll need to select one of the custom launchers if you wanna use all of the apps you added. Superuser.apk and the nookcolor tools utility are included in the zip.
I believe this is not considered warez since all the files included are free, mods feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Once again, this doesnt have market, just a guide to adding apps and being able to use root.
Hit thanks if I helped you.

awesome!!!
so no market means no gapps either?
what about amazon appstore?
This is great. I already have it up and running with a bunch of other apks and a third party launcher using this same method, but the nook color tools and root will be helpful too (enabling the installation of "unknown apps" will be very good).

Amazon App store should work now that you mention it. Just download the apk online and put it in there. Hahah Im working on a full rooted rom but I figured Id give you all something easy to do for now.
do all apk have to into system app as i think amazon installs to data folder
You can sideload the Amazon app (or download it through the browser) after you do the steps in the OP. After it boots, open Nook Color Utils (tools?) and then uncheck and check the unknown apps option at the top. After that you should be able to download and install or sideload anything into data/app.

In the stock 1.2 zip thread here

I suggested loading one of the one-click root apps into the ROM? Does that work?
I did try installing with z4root in system/apps and it didn't work. Though that may have been because it needs to run from data/app (maybe?). Don't know. Haven't tried it that way yet.

This is unbelievable! Thanks so much for this.
I use my nook for 70% reading + 30 % for emailing and web browsing.
I installed CM7 on emmc, but the battery sleep issue is killing (goes from 100 to 0% in a day) + I cannot use the stock Nook reading App. The Nook market app sucks compared to the stock nook app.
I was ideally looking for a solution which would allow me to use the stock nook reader + email + good web browser.
So can I sideload apps such as Dolphin HD browser and Any email client, using this method? Is there any limit to sideloading apps in the system/app folder? I do have a bunch of apk's that I would love to use.
Thanks in advance!

Yes you can do all of that! And I dot think you'll run into any problems unless you have like 600 Mbs of apps. Hahaha
How to flash this?
Please excuse the Noob questions.
How do I go about flashing this? Do I just insert the sd card and boot? Do I hold the n and power buttons? Some other way?
Also, will this all be wiped out if B&N force-upgrades over wifi?

I've been searching through here and over on RootzWiki for a Droid 3 copy of BlurEmail.apk. I haven't successfully been able to locate the file or a dump containing the file that I'm confident will work. I am a noob and I apologize for that, hopefully this question hasn't been asked and answered a million times, though if it has I can't find it. I've been looking for the last three hours I promise, I just can't find what I'm looking for.
I have BlurEmail.apk and BlurEmail.odex that I know works on my phone out of my backup prior to installing Steel Droid. Can I deodex this myself, or am I able to just drop both of these files into /system/app and be back in business?
You would have to deodex to use in a rom that is deodexed all ready.
I had to do this as well, needed email on steel droid. Just download Monster Rom bloated, and then you can pull it out of there.
1) Obtain the Deodexed install from RootzWiki. (Or if you have a back-up, that will work too!)
2) Extract the zip file (I downloaded mine to the PC and unzipped it there).
3) Open the extracted folder, then navigate to /system/app.
4) Locate the BlurEmail.apk file (not to be confused with blur_email.apk) and copy it.
5) Paste the file to the SD card or internal storage.
6) Using a file explorer (such as Root Explorer),copy the file from where you put it and paste to the /system/app directory (you may need to mount as RW first).
7) Set the permissions to rw-r--r-- by long-pressing and selecting "Permissions" (this is if you use Root Explorer, other programs may vary). Make sure owner has Read and Write, while Group and Others have Read only.
8) Reboot phone, and enjoy!
***NOTE THIS IS NOT MY FIND. I WAS HELPED WITH SAME ISSUE. I AM NOT COPYING ANYONES HARD WORK***
thats your answer. When it says locate deodex locate the stock deodex not the deodex debloated version. Follow steps. It works. I did it. And im running sd3.

I'm using the email.apk file taken from a Desire Z cyanogen rom, I consider it way better than blur email because I can mix the accounts and assign a custom color for every inbox.
I've just deleted the blur email and copied the email.apk in the system/app folder

I had been able to locate that post you quoted for directions on how to do it, which are straight forward. I'm just having trouble finding a BlurEmail.apk, email.apk, or Messaging.apk that when used in coordination with these instructions gets me to a corporate e-mail inbox. I'll keep downloading different ROM's and trying different ones I guess until I can find one that works for me.
If I ever get to that point I'll attach it to a follow-up post so if someone finds themselves in my shoes later they can just pull that down and be set.
Okay, finally found what I needed to get back working with corporate e-mail. I can't attach to this post unfortunately, nor am I allowed to post links in a post so... I'm throwing this archive up on one of my boxes so if someone else needs it they can maybe find it faster than I did.

thank you!
I had the same issue. I found Mail Droid in the market to be better than anything I've used prior.

this link is no longer valid. does anyone have a good one for this file??
Does anyone know how to get the google search app on the kindle?
0.1. You will need a type of root file explorer
1.There's an app called universalsearch.apk in the /system/app folder, you will first need to rename it universalsearch.apk.bak
2.Then you will need to download one of the jelly bean Google search apps from the guides floating around. There are some that include lib files and other things, and these will give you the best results (Google is your friend)
3. Don't try flashing zips, but push files from your found guide to their respective location. DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE EVERY FILE'S PERMISSIONS TO rw-r--r-- that go into the system folder.
And voila, Google now.

Thanks for the help! Everything is working fine Thought voice search isnt working ): does anyone know how to get it working
Ya, I never got it working. I assumed it was a framework issue with amazon skin. With it on, drivers that control microphone aren't functioning like a normal ICS android device, thus it causes that issue.
