[Q] HTC is S-OFF but apps say its S-ON - HTC Sensation XL

Hello, I have an HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio X315e.
Information from BootLoader:
= Juopunutbear =
RUNNYMEDE PVT SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.25.4444
RADIO-3822.10.10.12_M
eMMC-boot
Oct 20 2011, 00:20:33
Now when I try to run a program that requires S-OFF, it says in the notifications of it that phone must be S-OFF to use it.
My HTC is already S-OFF what can be the cause of the error ?
My friend tested it on an other phone (Samsung Note S2) and for him it works fine.
Is the application bugged or am I doing something wrong ?

The app is Freedom, every time i start it says that the phone must be S-OFF to use.
I have tried different HBOOTS and other ROMs. Nothing helped...
Where is the problem located?

I can, but I'm trying my HTC limits by changing alot of stuff and testing.
I really want to try to have another way, because spending more then 1,000$ on in-app purchases is too much-..
Mabye you don't have the problem, but I do.

You want to change things in your SXL over 1000 dollars worth, for free. Did I understood that right?

When someone makes them to use for free, its not any sort of pirating. Some developers just want a little thanks, some want little amount of money. These days stealing an app, music etc doesnt seem like a big crime to lots of people but following this forum, everyone can see how much developers are willing to give when making roms, apps, tweaks, etc to make our phones better and better day by day.
So at least what can give them back is our respect, thanks or that little amount of money, in some cases.
Im not here to annoy you, this is for all who is thinking of to go criminal ways.
And last and least: using app like Freedom, exposes its user and data to extreme privacy & security risks.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio X315e using xda app-developers app

These people on this site work hard to edit devices that they are aloud to at there own risk and tweak and FREELY supply there rims to other people as these nice people are!
You may not like paying for apps but think of it from a developer's point of view!
For eg. Grow a crop of corn intending to sell and make money off it to earn a living and people get into it while your sleeping and steal it, its just not fair...

My first HTC

Thus is my first HTC device. I won it via a One launch training in Philly. I was lucky enough to receive my silver One Tuesday 4/16. I am impressed. I have owned Moto and Sammy phones recently coming off the S3 and was a little skeptical trying this out. This phone solid and the screen is AMAZING!!!! All of my fears with owning a HTC phone have been quickly dissipated.
Thanks so much to Viperboy and his simple root thread. Although foreign, he made it simple and easy. I'm an AOSP'ish guy so I'm eagerly awaiting what awesomeness lies ahead!

..."In a nutshell, S-OFF means that the NAND portion of the device is unlocked and can be written to. The default setting for HTC’s devices is S-ON, which means that neither can you access certain areas of the system nor can you guarantee a permanent root. Furthermore, signature check for firmware images is also ensured by the S-ON flag.:...
and it goes on to later also state... "In their devices, HTC have installed a sort of security check whose level is determined by S-OFF/S-ON. Essentially, this security level is a flag stored on the device’s radio that checks signature images for any firmware before it is allowed to be written to system memory. This hinders using any custom ROMs, splash images, recovery etc., and also restricts access to the NAND flash memory. However, when security level is set to S-OFF, the signature check is bypassed, allowing a user to upload custom firmware images, unsigned boot, recovery, splash and HBOOT images, as well as official firmware that has been modified, this enabling maximum customization of your HTC Android device.
Furthermore, S-OFF also reduces restrictions on accessing the NAND flash memory on the device, allowing all partitions (including /system) to be mounted in write mode while the operating system is booted."

s off means the nand can be written to. With security off, can flash unsigned img's like splash, hboot, etc.
It is virtually assured that an exploit will be found and we will have s-off within a few weeks. Historically that is the case for every htc device to date.

So I habe a friend who owns the Optimus G. He somehow wiped his EFS partition. This S-on, is that one of the things HTC is trying to protect?
I'm already getting a good vibe from this community. I don't mean to bash the S3 forums, they were very helpful, but too many trolls and wannabe mods. This community alone is making this device enjoyable. And most of you dont even have one yet.
Much appreciated!!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I also came from the s3 forums.
Im not exactly sure, but I would assume so, as the EFS has control over IMEI number and I would assume HTC would want to maintain control over that. Buuuuut s off does have its advantages, such as states above. Custome firmwares and boot images and the like.

The Sprint HTC community is very hard to beat... Over the years I have endured some device and carrier specific hiccups just to stay around this particular group of people.
Sometimes I have gone to other subforums when working with a friend or family members phone of different brand or on another carrier. The vibe is always just wrong, the people are usually absurd with their answers to any question. I hope you enjoy your stay here.
True true. Ive been a member of a few different communities over the years but I always felt more at home and surrounded by friends in the OG Evo and Evo3D forums. You guys are great.

My first HTC device also. Came from S3, Skyrocket, Atrix, and yes I know......an iphone. I want to root and put a rom on it but I'm being very cautious. I dont know this device very well yet so I'm gonna keep reading.
Same here. I spent over a year on the Skyrocket forums, and they could be touchy to say the least.
This is also my first HTC. Technically I had the Hero for 2 days but went with the Moment instead.
I'm coming from the OG Samsung Epic. Great group on their forums for the most part but this community seems great as well
Very cautious with rooting this as my last phone was practically unbrickable. I'm normally an AOSP guy but there are lots of features on here that I woukdnt want to part with. Hopefully we see a 4.2/5.0 update soon.

Has anyone seen this? My Sprint One has no Sprint branding (in software)....everything works as it should except I'm missing most of the settings in settings/mobile data. Sprint was unable to fix it & recommends swapping out....odd...I even called HTC, they were clueless, lol

hboot-1.44
unlocked via htc dev
Possibly a bad/did not get a software unit flash at the factory whether it's Sprint or HTC that does the carrier specific branding. I'm assuming they flash all units with their standard image and then specifically flash their carrier image changes but looks like this one has not been given a carrier flash due to you not having any Sprint specific parameters under Mobile Data.
Try the official RUU and if that doesn't work get a new one.
Did you htcdev unlock it and root as soon as you received it? I did not and initially I had no sprint branding but as I was messing around with the phone it starting an update. Phone rebooted as if it had taken an ota. Does your phone show the sprint logo when booting? Mine initially didn't but after the reboot it does a now.

Yea I heard that the phone is completely HTC Stock at the time of purchase it's not till after it's been activated on sprints network that it then pulls down or loads their software on it. When I got mine from radioshack and the guy turned it on it had no sprint boot or apps then it went to a boatloader like screen and updated and then it boot with sprint animation and sprint apps. Was your box branded at all?

I can confirm this is exactly what happened in my case. I bought the sucka full price from sprint.com. Got it, booted up, no sprint splash screen. As I was setting up the device, I received an OTA which then rebooted the phone. I then saw the Sprint splash screen.
This may also explain why I had the calculator on the device...

Yes but it becomes extremely important to match md5 hashes before you attempt to flash radios and hboots. One wrong move and it's Perma brick no fixing it.

Gunny, have you tried out any of the AOSP ROMs? I'm sure you have, but if that's what you're looking for you can already have it. This community is almost always faster at getting updates out than Google, even on Nexus devices. I have a feeling that this phone will be something of a red-headed step child to the Nexus family because of the special hardware/software considerations(i.e. the Camera[reported to take abysmal pictures on AOSP ROMs, so must be something soft/hardware combination HTC is pulling out], Beats audio chip, etc.).

If exchanging through HTC, you're gonna roll the dice. If they determine that it's a hardware failure in no way related to anything you've done to the phone, then they will replace free of charge. If they don't make that determination, they'll still replace but they will charge you for the new parts(camera + new locked motherboard). At least, that's been their M.O in my experience going back to at least the Nexus One.
Thanks for an insightful reply. I bought it from tmobile over the phone..and plan to take it for a store exchange on June 5

As another tip, make sure to turn on Fast Boot under Settings > Power. This will make it more "difficult" for the rep to check since you can't boot into the bootloader or into recovery while it's checkboxed. Also, it's the default option. Just make sure the obvious things are gone: stock ROM, no SU, etc.

Uh huh.. I'm no noob and I want S-Off for LOCKED so that I can claim hardware failures like the power button, NFC not working etc etc. Where I'm from, an unlocked bootloader is an instant reject no matter what the damage is.

AOSP roms = possible problems

I have been following most of the AOSP threads fairly closely to see people's experiences and I have seen a disturbing amount of people report bricked phones. The odd thing about it is that these bricks didn't occur during the process of flashing a rom. They all happened (or most of them at least) while trying to power on the phone after it was turned off or in deep sleep. Here are links to posts by DIFFERENT AOSP rom users who all experienced similar issues (one of these posts contain links to 3 other posts):

I personally have run Slim's rom for a good 4-5 hours w/o problems. However, I went back to Sense shortly thereafter. I'm not trying to cause some kind of panic but on the same hand I don't want to see people sitting around with a $500 desk ornament. Bottom line is we are responsible for what we do with our phones and as a result we should do as much research as possible before flashing anything. Look before you leap!
Edit: Here is an additional means to record your brick experience:

Thanks goes out to the user who took the time to do this.
Yep just be careful guys the only warning I had to something strange happening was that my phone didn't charge at all when I turned it off (to try and charge it fast) it still charged while powered on however. But once it died that was it. Also no overclocking or system setting where really changed in my case.
Here's how I got a replacement went in and told them it wouldn't turn on and I myself at the time thought it was the battery so they said that could be it but again I wasnt to sure and neither where them. I ended up paying 50$ without tep

That's some messed up stuff.... You shouldn't have had to pay since it was a "hardware" issue. It should've been covered under the manufacturers warranty.
Lol it was but I needed a phone fast and didn't go through HTC

I know but whenever i've had a problem like that it's always been a free fix through sprint......
yeah I am in the same boat, I believe I was the first to report this. At first I thought it was just me and I passed it off as nothing. Since I've got my replacement I've watched people starting to trickle in with the same exact problem on AOSP I would definitely avoid flashing AOSP until the cause is narrowed down and solved if possible. As I said before it would be a damn shame not to run AOSP on this mighty device, but I have to stick with sense for now and hope that this problem is squashed soon.
Wow really? How upsetting. I'll have to keep an ear open. If there is any news regarding this issue please share

Has anyone on a NON AOSP rom run their battery down and had it die? Did it charge? I know on a few other phones it was actually the recovery that had this issue. I would try it myself but as I have my phone through work, replacing it is a bit more complicated.
I work for sprint and had a guy come in who bricked his phone. A simple relock of the bootloader and an ruu flash and bam phone was up and working fine. Is that not working for aosp bricks? I've personally haven't had any problems out of aosp roms

you are not able to relock the bootloader. we're talking total shut down, no power, no charge, no recovery, no bootloader, no fastboot adb devices, not a thing period point blank. i have the dead device still, and for the life of me cannot get it to do anything. I have been on my replacement for 2 weeks now running sense. hopefully the cause and solution are near.
Well... I was thinking of trying an AOSP ROM, but I guess I will hold of on that thought.

I'm with you on that
Until we get more kernel sources/reliable code out of HTC, playing with AOSP can be a dangerous game. And tbqh, it could well be OP's fault (not saying it is, but it can be). Flashing custom software of any kind is going to give your carrier/OEM an easy way out if anything goes wrong, which everyone really should keep in mind before making the jump.
What recovery are the "bricked" users running. TWRP or CWM?
Yeah I had my battery die completely on a sense Rom, but I was easily able to charge it and turn it back on 2 minutes later.

Glad I'm doing a lot of reading before I make the jump back to HTC. Seems like the One is more of a pain in the ass to Develop (safely) for than the GS3. Looks like I'll be sticking to sense for a while.
For once in all of my android ownership, I'm not really pressed to switch to aosp so this isn't a huge deal for me. The phone is already blazing fast and I actually enjoy and use a lot of the features HTC has implemented into Sense 5. And HTC's browser is the smoothest I've ever used. I do hope someone figures out the problem though. Hate to see more people get bricked.

So far, only TWRP users have reported this issue.
I don't want to be Mr. Obvious but I'm assuming that you guys have already tried the trick of putting your phone under a bright light, etc etc

So, the Dual-SIM HTC One is getting 4.2 right now...

I'm sure it's with Sprint, but they dropped this to the Dual SIM model before the first international model.

And with 4.3 on the horizon... I still love HTC, this is just one of those parts about company that worry me.
The good thing is we at least know what we're expected to see with the update.

I've already engaged in a email conversation with HTC Dev and they ensure me that updates are coming soon and they are working on releasing the sources as well soon(sounds like everything else we read but it's nice they are directly communicating with me).

Only thing missing, time frame. I don't even need an exact date. I just need something from HTC like "Middle of July" or even something from Sprint saying, "Expect it in July".

It's not HTC. There are many parties involved when an update is released on a Carrier phone as opposed to a unbranded phone.

I appears that this update being pushed to the phones if China Telecom or some other Operators. The rough order is Google releases an update. OEMs get it working on theier hardware and add there stuff to it. Then the OEMs send it to unbranded phones and/or the Operators for them to put their stuff in it and test per thier networks. Then the Carriers push an update.
My guess here is that the Chinese Operators did not care to do much testing or what they did was fine, where as I read HTC was not happy with some of the firmware in the 4.2.2 update and have slightly delayed pushing thier's out. That seems awfully scary if an Operator is rushing something out.

Seriously... These kind of things make me regret being on sprint. Already our GSM brothers on GayT&T & Fail-Mobile converted their devices to Developer editions & Unbranded devices. We're stuck with stupid CDMA policies

You just dissed every American carrier that carries the One.
Even the sprint and Verizon GS4s received GE edition ROM ports, which has me going crazy. I'm seriously considering ditching my ONE for the GS4. Not to mention the signal for LTE on this phone is seriously getting to me in places I had perfect LTE with my GS3
Nobody has patience.... Just live life and let the update surprise you. Too much demanding going on here.

No demanding. Just frustrated with HTC at this point. 4.2.2 was supposed to be out mid June. It is now July. I had confidence in the ONE but I'm losing it quickly and so are some other people. No projected date, statement, acknowledgment to customers. This is why I left the EVO LTE. I had a soft spot in my heart because of the original OG Evo but it is starting to leave.

There was never a time table. There were rumors that 4.2.2 was supposed to hit in June. And this was for unbranded EU handsets not the US ones....

Regardless, it's been too long. Especially not relaying information to your customers. When your competitors updating older devices quicker than your newest device. That's sad.
