[Q] Wi-Fi Direct and Media share settings - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

manual mentions nothing about Wi-Fi Direct but i was told that RAZR i supports it. my question: anyone managed to activate it?
tried with a HTC Desire X Wi-Fi Direct turned on in settings but without 3rd party apps. no success, even with Media share enabled in RAZR i settings (which is another feature not mentioned in manual, so any info for that would be also appreciated). thx in advance.

Under ICS you were able to activate WI-DI by running an appropriately programmed NFC command, however, this function seems to have been disabled under JB along with the FM radio.
Media sharing uses DLNA which is a different story, I don't know more about it, but certainly would like to

thx, any further info about this nfc command?
just tried 3rd party wifi direct app called shoot, but the activation setting leads to a dead end (missing widi option in settings/more) so obviously not working.

Monitor Froyo hotspot clients?

Hi,
Let's say I want to check, who's connected to my hotspot. I've searched for an application or terminal commands that can show this info, but didn't find anything. Is there such a thing?
Thanks,
William.
Good question, I'm interested as well.

i never tried to monitor wifi hotspot clients but i think these ways should work.
way 1:
goto terminal, type:
arp -a
this command displays all entries, since the wifi connection actually makes the phone a router, so all connected clients should have corresponding arp entry.
way 2:
goto market and download Network Discovery application, use it to scan the whole network. Also it provides port scanning function too.
(but .. this application usually crashes on my phone after scanning for long time)
Interesting, thanks. I'll test and reply.
Tested, even the basic "busybox arp" with no switches works. The result needs to go through grep or use "specify interface" switch to avoid showing the 3G data IP.
I suppose that access control has to be implemented in the kernel, so I won't mess with it - but now I have a script line to see, who's connected. Thanks
And one day someone could write a widget for it. At least modify the on/off widgets to show the number of connected clients.
Any more news on this? The network discovery app kind of worked, but it had to use wifi which disabled tethering.
I think there has to be a way to see who is connected to your hotspot at one time without disabling anything.
The Palm Pre Plus on Verizon does this automatically. There are a lot of features that phone has that I wish android would impliment...Man it would have been nice if google had bought palm

Is that news?
You want an app/widget for that? There is none. I've turned to the creator of the "hotspot widget" and asked him to implement counter for connected clients (which should good enough for anything I can think of), but I got no answer. I also tried to find any open-source code for such widget to modify and add the functionality, but didn't find any.
The older Eclair CM build had such app for manual control, showing MACs of connected clients.
I dont think the stock froyo tethering implements this but the wired/wireless tether apps included in 2.1 roms has the function, mac address filtering too =D

[Q] WiFi Direct gingerbread

Hey guys,
Does anybody know if WiFi Direct is working on gingerbread?
I can't find a cooked ROM with this capability.
Wifi cast lite
There is a work around for this called WiFi Cast Lite ...just Google it and you can find it ....just like WiFi direct you need this app in both the devices to do the transfer....
The process is to enable hostspot on one device and connect to that hotspot using the other device and you are connected....then u can use the app to transfer the files ....

FC on HTC Explorer everytime
Totinsky, WiFi Direct was officially implemented by Android in ICS, but it sucks huge lemons and it crashes the phone all the time. WiFi Direct was finally stabilized in Jelly Bean (thanks to a certain little company). There is no official support in anything pre-ICS, I'm sorry to say. On another note, if you happen to get JB, we are building a proximity P2P file sharing app that uses WiFi Direct. The app is called Drop, and it is a simple, fast, and secure way to share files with people/devices in proximity. We are going into a limited Private Beta soon, so if you're up for the challenge, (and running Jelly Bean) then sign up at www.get-drop.com. Seats are limited, and we have a rolling enrollment, so check it out.

LED Flashlight for Revolution

Hi guys,
I've just released Tiny Flashlight v3.9.8, which has full support for LG Revolution.
You can check it here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.devuni.flashlight
Works good, thanks. Was looking for one that worked on the Revo the day before you posted this.
Works well, thank you.
Thanks doink, I've been waiting for this update. Been using Tiny Flashlight for months on my fascinate and love it.

Why so many permissions for a flashlight app?
NETWORK COMMUNICATION
FULL INTERNET ACCESS
Allows an application to create network sockets.
PHONE CALLS
READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITY
Allows the application to access the phone features of the device. An application with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to and the like.

Did you read the developer's description of the app?? Wait nevermind, I know the answer.
But if the mood strikes you, click on the link in the first post and expand the description.
Quoted from Android Market app description:
"Permissions:
============
Why Tiny Flashlight needs so many permissions and how are they used:
* TAKE PICTURES AND VIDEOS (CAMERA permission)
- In order to start the camera led (flash) on some devices, Tiny Flashlight has to use a small part of the camera hardware and it needs this permission. Don't worry, I'm not taking any pictures or videos without your permission. Tiny Flashlight is just accessing the camera led (flash).
* CONTROL FLASHLIGHT
- This is the old method of accessing the camera flash on Android 1.5 and 1.6.
*** As you know, Tiny Flashlight is free, but also is one of the best supported apps on the Android Market. Currently, this is the only app that supports almost all devices with camera led (flash) and fully supports all versions of Android (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 3.0). This takes huge amounts of time and effort and in order for Tiny Flashlight to remain the best flashlight on the market, I have to use ads inside it.
The following permissions are required by Google's own ad provider (Admob) and Millennial Media (the biggest independent ad network). Both are respected industry leaders.
* INTERNET
- Used to load ad info from their servers. Nothing more.
* MODIFY/DELETE USB STORAGE
- Temporary caches some ads on your SD Card. This is another method used to save bandwidth.
* READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITY
- Some Motorola devices have factory bugs. These devices don't have unique IDs and this became a problem for ad networks, because they can't function without it. There is a workaround for this problem by using the PHONE IDENTITY permission. This permission is used only for getting a unique id. Nothing more."
Have it and love it! Thank you!

wifi direct app

Hi,
In ICS we have wifi direct feature but there is no app which can use it. I am not a developer so if someone can compile source of this wifi direct app and make it an apk http://developer.android.com/resources/samples/WiFiDirectDemo/index.html
This is provided by Google..so i think it only needs compilation.
This is just an example of how to get a connection started and to look for other ICS phones. You'd still need to write an app that knows how to utilize that connection.
so if someone were to meet up with a another friend on ics, they cant trade file with wifi direct currently??
sent from the xda app on my android smartphone.
Not with what he posted because it's not a complete app, but there might be other apps using it or other ways of doing it. I remember Bump can transfer files, I'm not sure if it uses wifi or bluetooth though and it's not ICS exclusive.

Using watch to toggle phone system function without root possible?

Hey guys I was looking around the store and only found a tasker for 3.63USD that seems to do this (althought it required another side app and it says on the description it might not work)
So I was wondering if you know of any app that can allow me to toggle specifically data mobile connection among other system function as bluetooth, wifi etc.
I used to use Macrodroid for this functions but since now I am required to root my phone for that and since I don't want to mess with a new nexus 5x I am stuck without finding a solution for this .
thanks in advance.
