Frequently Asked Questions
about the LG Optimus 4x HD
As the Title says, this Thread is about Questions, being asked again and again...
These Questions can be about everything, Development, Device specific or what so ever.
If you have got a Question, feel free to post it here, especially if the Questions are short, to prevent discussions like the the init.d Thread.
If you post your Question here, i will most likely add it to the OP.
Now, let's get started:
Question 1) How can I root my Device?
The method that has worked for (as far as i know) everyone in this one. It is easy and (quite) safe and works for every known Firmware version, except the Brazilian and Canadian one. The Brazilian firmwares can be rooted using this method.
Update: For Jelly Bean there are 2 known ways: this one while you're on v20A and this one while upgrading from a rooted v10X to v20A
Question 2) How can I unlock my Bootloader?
The unlocking procedure is quite easy, so everyone should be able to do it (but that doesn't mean everyone should do it )
Be aware that unlocking the Bootloader will void your warranty.
Also important: not all Bootloaders are unlockable, but we don't know why yet. (Branded phones will (according to LG) not be unlockable tho)
We've got a tutorial here, explaining step by step how to unlock the Boorloader.
For german devices, we've got a special thread here and for 234 devices we've got one here.
Question 3) Is there any CWM or TWRP or any other recovery available?
Yes, they are.
v10x (aka ICS):
The 4x HD has CWM available here and even TWRP here.
And before you ask "Are they safe to use", i honestly don't like the word "safe" because there is no 100% safety, no matter what you are doing. But in my Opinion, they are safe enough to give them a try.
v20x (aka JB):
Dexter_nlb has also made CWM for v20x versions, but it requires an unlocked Bootloader. You can get it here.
But not only CWM is available, you can have TWRP and CWM in a boot menu by gordon0001 here
We also have official Rommanager support. You can also download the recovery from there. This version is also very noob friendly, because there are no shell or fastboot commands needed. all you gotta do is to press a few buttons in the app
Question 3.1) Alright, so now i've got a recovery, what about kernels?
We also have some custom kernels available. Just look though the Android development and original Android development sections and choose the one you like the most.
Question 4) Which one is the best custom ROM?
I like this Question just as much as the word "safe" Because there is no "best ROM". It depends on your wishes and preferences. The best thig i can tell you is to try them and to stick with the one you like the most.
Question 5) Does ....... work on my Device?
Well, there is no general answer, but most stuff you can find on XDA is working the way it it discribed in its OP. And if you're not willing to take the possible risk, you can always ask here, cause someone here on xda has tried it most likely.
If you have got a short Question, feel free to ask it here, but if it's a bigger one, please open a new Thread in Q&A section.

The linked root method doesn't work on Brazilian and Canadian firmwares.
Except that, good idea. I'll link it on my Index.

btw, you've forgot to add "Gorilla Glas"
LCD of my phone has white pixel and LG warranty has accepted to change LCD. I want to compare these 2 LCDs because in my region LG isn't very acceptable and I worry about the service.
Hi ,
I have V10H ,, I 'Never' get a working Recovery (both CWM & TWRP) when I install them it works for about 3 reboots (I didn't install any MOD) .
Then bootloop so I have to reflash .kdz .
The problem is that I get the bootloop when I need the phone , sometimes in school . Flashing *.kdz is easy but needs PC .
So I'm the only who has this problem ??
EDIT:- TWRP Works perfect .

well internal I have 12gb of space (/data/media is mounted as sdcard) . enough for games like max payne or gta3. never tried to move apps to sd but it should work fine. I don't know if it is root required but rooting the device is done in 2 minutes

Root is required to use sd files on external, you can use directory bind or gltosd, personally I find directory bind is better as it works for all games

Boot into recovery, connect your phone to computer, mound sdcard. Its under mounts and storage in cwm.Now your computer will show your sdcard.Copy your rom.zip and flash it with recovery as usual.
Why dont you justtry to flash a stock rom? Then, once its running you can root it and flash anything you want trough cwm...

This confused the sh1t outta me. Why is Samsung so damn complicated? So there are some ROMs you have to have a certain recovery to flash? My god, with HTC, once you have recovery, you flash whatever the hell you want. I got my mom a GNex for mothers day (even though I hate Samsung) and intended to root it and keep it up to date for her. But all this crazy talk about having to use certain modems (whatever the hell that is) with certain recoveries and certain ROMs, wow on a Dec device? So confused and disappointed. .
Jesus. With HTC, once you got recovery, you flash whatever radio, ROM, and kernel you want. None of the trick secret Sammy BS. Unbelievable since it's supposed to be a dev device.
Any help with Sammy always welcomed.

Maybe you should just stick with HTC. Going by your childish rant, Samsung is a bit deep for you.
Hi guys
I recently brought a 2nd hand LG black.
This rom is totally stock, to be precise, it is a Hong Kong version v20
Since I want to improve the battery life and have a more defined rom.
I would like to root and install CWM for my LG black.
Up to now, I have downloaded a few kdz from the subforum.
I have little experience before with LG phone, Last one i played around was LG P500. I remember last time i could easily root the phone by super1click, and then install rom manager from play store.
And from there (play store) i install CWM recovery.
I would like to find the confirmation from you guys that
Can i go for the same path again, super1click>rom manager>CWM recovery??
Thx in advance!!
Read my how to and find all you neeed

I realised the way you suggest to install CWM as exactly as mine.
But you only suggest to use SOC to root for 2.2 devices
Is there any reasons I should not root a 2.3 by SOC?
Actually SOC is always the most comfortable way to root for me
Hope you can share some

Read post 3 about how to do it yourself and follow the youtube video guide mentioned there. It's really easy and safe.
To me:
Easiest
- Smartflashtool flash v10a
- Use mass storage for phone
- Download Gingerbreak.apk
- Transfer to phone mass storage
- Install app
- Root
- Open Play Store
- Download ROM Manager
-Flash CWM
Voila
Easiest but slowest

Hmm, complicated. Why not:
- Smartflashtool flash v20n that has CWM inside. This is the procedure.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23788913&postcount=170.You only need the V20n,0,s (any of them) in fls/bin format.
- Flash Superuser.zip in CWM
- Done.
thx everyone
finally i got it!!
now using zeus v7, very cool rom!
But one last question, can i use the same smartflash with patched .bin method to revery to stock if i mess up something.
for example i am on cm9 and i wanna go back to GB, or i have to repartition my phone just like other brands like samsung.

Hi all,
I bought an Xperia T recently and I discover my locked bootloader when I rooted it.
Today since 2 weeks of testing my official .195 rooted rom I found that the phone is an energy eater.
So I tryed to find an upgrade of my phone with a custom rom and a custom kernel.
Obviously it's not possible, or I am not able to do it. When I'm flashing a new rom via CWM + flash CWM flashable and RebootFix no rom start.
So I would like to know which roms are flashable on a locked bootloader ?
Is there a list ? Which types of rom can I put to my phone ?
Regards,
N3o

You cannot use a custom kernel on a locked bootloader, so any rom that requires its own kernel you can not use (e.g CM, AOKP, PA etc)
There are a few roms you can use, one is mine and the other actually says in the thread title its for locked bootloaders. Its by hackitz. Look in the development thread.
As for a list, I currently have a list of all available roms for our devices in the all in one thread in the Q&A section, however, it does require a bit of reorganising and I am due to get round to it soon.
I will oranise it into
Device/LB or ULB/Version
Untill then I suggest you can try any stock based ROM. Follow the T/TX link in my signature to find mine.
EDIT, Now that I have ANSWERED your QUESTION, have a guess which section it should have been posted in

Hmm, Someone mentioned that ages ago in my rom thread, not sure what it is because I dont have it on my phone. Have a search in that thread. Which phone do you have? Try turning data on and off.
To centre the clock you need a new framework, you could look in the theme and app section for a new lockscreen, but I didnt bother to centre it as I dont mind it over on the right.
This is the 3g+ icon that is not correctly inserted (i think because france have 2g/3g/3g+ and H+ logos)
I try to get a correction or I change the lockscreen if I can't move the clock.

I have been looking around here the last 2 days since I purchased a new white LT30p (9.1.A.0.489 firmware, 3.4.0 kernel, 6.0.1.2 CWM, locked bootloader). Great screen and Fast. I wanted to know if there are any roms that I could flash that have the CM/T-Mobile theme chooser. I don't want to unlock it due to it having to be done through Sony, so unless there is a rom I can flash with theme chooser or another way to unlock it,I guess I'll throw it on eBay, take loss and buy an unused white Arc S. Thanks.

You can download official CWM recovery. Search here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager for LG Optimus 4X HD.
Then you can install with terminal, fastboot or sth else - I don't remeber well.
Then the fun starts. (On XDA look for ROMs and kernels)
And read the instructions carefully.
Unlock ur bootloader 1st!

It can be done without unlocked bootloader, but then you will be unable to install custom ROMs. So if you're on stock JB, unlock bootloader if you want (warrany will be woid).
That's not hard first you must root tour phone then install rom manager choose tour phone from it flash recovery reboot in it then flash zip file that's all

First you need to unlock your bootloader after that you can Install CWM or TWRP.
After doing all this you can Instal CM or any other ROM.
If you try to install the CWM or TWRP without unlocking the bootloader you will get the boot signature error and you won't be able to boot into recovery (please correct me if I am wrong.)
Don't Forget to make nondorid backup before you try installing any ROM in case you know what I mean
and next time post it in Q & A thread please..
Have fun mate.
yes you will get an boot image signature if you install cwm or twrp with locked bootloader
the only way to flash a custom rom on an locked bootloader is to adjust the rom to the stock kernel and device and the flash it via a bootstrap( like dexter did it)
but nobody is going to do it if you have tje possibility to unlock your BL seems that you have to stay at stock rom if you don't have the know how how to do it

That is not their ram. That is the score their memory received from the test app.

It's not a trick, but it is pointless for a high end device as all it will do is increase lag and kill the SD Card due to the high amount of writes.
Someone help to solve low internal memory of honor 4x. I am totally frustrated with it, there is no file and app in internal memory. I have installed all apps in SD card even then i have only 400-500mb free space i internal.

Did you installed them on the SD-card native android way or did you use app like Apps2SD to do it?

This might be stupid question but did you move them like going into App info -> move to SD or have you partitioned your SD-card to ext4 and FAT32 partitions and moved apps to ext4 partition. Or did you do it some other way?

Yeah that is the native way. I think it doesn't move whole app only some parts(very small parts). If you want to move whole app to SD-card you'll need rooted device and SD-card with 2 partitions (ext4 and FAT32).

Maybe I can help(atleast I can try)
Which model you have? (Che2 or some other)
Which android version do you have?
Do you have unloked bootloader?
****If yes to last one****
Have you been able to flash any custom recovery?

sometime back i unblocked bootloader and changed Rom then faced so many issues with 4G network so i rolled back it, now bootloader is blocked. if is there any other way to move whole app using third party app? then let me know. I don't want to unblock bootloader again cause don't have time to handle issues after rooting.

You must be rooted to move whole apps to SD-card. Btw which rom you changed to?
Also if you just think what you are doing and have a backup, rooting shouldn't cause any problems on stock firmware.
(Well, some apps have been made so that they won't work if device is rooted)
This is weired behaviour on 4X and reported by many users. Haven't came across solutions yet
This is one of the reason i am still with KK and haven't updated my phone even once.

Nah, sorry root is only method I think. (There is also adopted storage for android 6.0, but you might still need root make it available).
Also I guess you have Qualcom snapdragon version, so I probably couldn't help anyway. (But all things should work better on snapdragon version than on kirin 620 version).

yes it's Qualcom see the attachment.
I'm assuming that you have che1-l04 variant. Upgrade to marshmallow or rooting your phone only will do the job. I was also frustrated with low storage so I switched to custom roms and now using SD as internal storage, marshmallow's adoptable storage was good but still I wasn't able to install more than 45-50 apps(system apps aren't included).
you are right i'm using che1-L04 with marshmallow. i can root it but don't wanna switch the rom

Thats sad brother. but seeing the post was started in June. We may have few roms which support 4G now. atleast MM based ROMs should have this for sure.

I understand there must be more ROMs but i don't wanna take risk again. As you know it takes too much time to manage new Rom and it's not possible there will be no bugs after installing MM based rom.
