Tablet UI for AOSP/CM10.1 discussion - Nexus 7 General

XDA member AuxLV is working on an app called Tabletizer. It's an apk that does the conversion by creating a flashable zip file on your device which you then flash in the recovery.
[APP] Tabletizer Alpha 4 (2013.03.02)
I've tried this one and it works well.
There are some other roms/patches that do have a Tablet UI option:
[PATCH] True Tablet UI (Apps+GUI) w/o DPI Change for Stock & CM10 - Update Oct11
[ROM][WIFI][CM10.1][Feb27] BeatMod CrystalClear v2.1 | Aroma | TabletUI | Sound Mods
PARANOIDANDROID 3.0 (4.2.2) | Only Rom on Android capable of Hybrid mode
Please add links to other solutions and projects or status updates, and keep general talk about TabletUI in this thread unless new a new one is created.

I updated my G+ with current status.

I am very interested in this as my posts in the CM 10.1 "official" thread should have made clear, but being as I'm not a developer I can't do much but sit around and hope someone with more talent than I have is capable of making it a reality. I understand that Google has decided to "move on" and just flat out give up on the tablet UI - which is odd considering it's a tablet device we're using with the Nexus 7 and not a damned phone, even so - but that's their prerogative I suppose.
For the moment I'll use Paranoid Android 3.0 when aaron is able to get a 4.2.2 build out, he's currently working on it as noted in his thread last night but it's not available just yet. I was using PA 3.0 with 4.2.1 and found it very useful for many reasons, the tablet UI functionality being the primary one.
The Nexus 7 I have is actually damaged (hence it being a $25 craigslist special) with a crack in the upper right hand corner where the previous owner had dropped it - there's a triangular area in the upper right hand side that doesn't respond to touch anymore, kinda funky how it lines up but, with PA and that tablet UI functionality it's not a real issue because I can hold the menu soft key and it'll bring up the settings for any given app anyway.
If I have to choose a specific ROM I tend to go back to "pure" CM whenever possible so, if someone can actually get the tablet UI functional in 10.1 (based on 4.2.2 at this point) I'm all for it. If not, then PA will fill the ROM role for me.
I remember seeing them introduce Honeycomb and was blown away with the interface layout and the functionality, and now they've basically just swept all that out like yesterday's garbage and I really wish I knew why. It's like seeing demos of versions of Windows that never end up being actually made into workable products - there are videos on YouTube of test versions of Windows Longhorn which was scrapped and then reborn as Vista and some of the stuff they do in those Longhorn videos is beyond cool, seriously.
Android showed some "beyond cool" capability with Honeycomb and a proper tablet UI, now it's like that stuff was a mistake or something and I completely disagree on that respect. But then again, I do understand Google's attempts at unifying the Android interface across all devices instead of having something for phones and then something for tablets, what now with ChromeOS trying to gain traction as well.
Suffice to say if someone can make it possible with CM then fantastic, if not then I'll make do with whatever I suppose. Would be nice, however...

I just want to make sure my app is of top quality, I failed two updates for LagFix when I wanted to make them quick, that will never happen again.

Your efforts, even if it proves not really possible (because of something Google has changed, etc), are greatly appreciated.

Any updates AuxLV?

My hero!!!!

Well done on alot of good work.
I will have to be honest that I like the quick settings menu in combo with the notifications drop down. And I like the way the navigation bar is by default.
But the thing I like about the Honeycomb style ui is the settings menu. I guess compared to stock Jellybean, that might be the only thing I like alot (Just to be clear, I did not dislike other aspects). The Honeycomb notifications tray just seemed to add additional screen pressed for functions now contained within the quick settings menu.
But, still. Good job changing the ui. Its not an easy thing to do. I tried to do some changes for personal use, and seemingly small changes completely crash the system to an unusable state.

Hey aux, where will you be posting this app? Id love to test it

First alpha as promised!
Before using: BACK UP!!!
Using:
Launch app
Click "Run tabletizer"
Wait for a few minutes
It will create update.zip file in /sdcard/data/tabletizer/temp
Flash this update.zip from CWM/TWRP recovery
Reboot
App is quite unstable at the moment, because recompilation process eats a lot of RAM and it crashes often when runs out of memory. I'm rewritting smali tool to be more friendly, but it will take some time to finish.

Thank you for your app! I ran the apk, it started the process and got to these last 3 lines:
Services are patched!
Can not recompile.
Compilation exception.
Now it hasn't done anything for 10 minutes. I'll wait a bit longer and try again.

Yep, it does not work, another bug Don't wait, close it. Thanks for report. Will try to figure it out tommorow, it's 23:50 already here and I want to sleep
But at least I've found a way to deal with RAM. A temporary fix which will do for alpha.

Awww thanks so much! Looking forward to your next update!

[App] NoLED - Use the AMOLED screen for incoming notifications (Crosspost from I9000)

The dev has released more updates, currently on version 0.6. Check it out, the app got a whole lot cooler, and is in pretty active development now!
There's a dev in the I9000 forums working on using the AMOLED screen to display notifications. Currently it's displayed as a red dot in the top left corner of the screen. It's in an early stage, but it works on my Captivate.
Read the thread here for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730692
The dev is apparently going on vacation soon, and won't be working on it for a while, so any potential developers here that know how to implement something like this, take note!
Edit: I don't take responsibility for the work on this app at all; just posting here because it works on the Captivate and is an awesome idea.
Sweet this is something exactly what I was looking for!
Hope he can make use of the bottom 4 buttons or something.
Edit: I just read there are no API's to light up the capacitive buttons
But the project so far looks amazing. I'll have to give it a run when I get off of work.
works! sideloaded this thing right into my Captivate easier than rooting (and that was possibly the easiest thing I've done customizing a phone in the past!)
thanks! was definitely missing my notification LED from my last two WinMo phones....
I have got to find out how to side load apps.
Install the Android sdk, add the tools directory to the system PATH, install Samsung drivers to your computer if its 64 bit Windows you need 64 bit drivers, open a command prompt, type "adb install blahblah.apk"... that's pretty much it... obviously your current working directory needs to be the same as the apk file.

yeah, that's what I used alright..... WAY too simple to use, I mean, it isn't drag and drop to a CAB folder like WinMo, but this thing installs the program for you, making it just that much easier to use!

Works for my on my captivate. Thanks for the great work OP!
how does this app affect battery life?
the developer said that since it doesn't use any timers within the cpu, it is very VERY minimal on battery.
It worked for me with an SMS, (I use Handcent) but it didn't work for an email. (K9-mail)
I had to remove it because it wasn't letting me go to my screen our unlock my phone

Well, it's still better than nothing. The app is still very much a work-in-progress, and hopefully the dev makes some good progress on it soon.
I've been trying to learn how to write Android apps, since the dev won't be around for a while to work on it, but all I've accomplished is realizing how incompetent I am in Java, heh.
When i first saw this app the word pixel burnout came to mind. But the dev says the red square moves around on the screen to prevent that so it might just end up being useful. I think samsung and google need to give us an api to use the menu keys since they didn't provide us with a notification light.

Oh I agree, it is a work in progress. It was an awesome idea, but I was close to some battery pulls because I couldn't get the touch screen to work.
I wonder about all the complaints regarding a notification LED, since Samsung gave us 384,000 LEDs to play with.

Man i know you can get it to work You done some pretty amazing stuff on here and if you cant maybe you can get Jaybob to help you or something
with the navigation buttons at the bottom, it might be a little cramped. sure we can change the dpi to like 120 but my phone lags when i try to make everything smaller and fit more on the screen.
Or if the navigation buttons can be removed... who knows. Of course even cramped ICS would be great on our Heroes.
Im almost positive we will get some sort of port of ICS. Ever since froyo the companies have been saying that the hero simply can not handel the new updates because of minimal system requirements. However I red an article with a Q&A about ICS, and one of the questions was what are the minimal system requirements for ICS? The anser was none that i can think of right now. ICS is meant to bring Android tablets and phones toghether in developmental terms. Google is trying to unify android, rather than have phones rounning one type of android and tablets another. It has even been said that ICS will be available for older devices of up to one year old or so. But in closeing im prety optimistic about a port for the Hero, and probably sooner than latter.
Considering that our devs got the source now I'm sure were gona see ICS can't wait

I downloaded the beta version of ICS for hero to see how it looks and feels it"s a little buggy it has some things that need to be worked out like not being able to pair with bluetooth device and bluetooth turning off completely and not being able to turn it back on again... Also when trying to turn on wifi hotspot the phone just hangs there saying turning on wifi screen I let it run for 5 minutes before I rebooted my phone... This rom is in early stages of devoplement and if and when the stuff that isn't working gets fixed I see this as my next rom of choice... Nice work jaybob on a job will done and a million thanks to you...

"VZW" 2.3.6 ROM - UPDATED 2/23/12 Themed

INSERT USUAL DISCLAIMER HERE. I THINK (HOPE) YOU ALL KNOW THE RISKS BY NOW. Blah blah brick, blah blah not my fault, you know.
Well, using Willis111's Canadian Bell 2.3.6 build from here, somemadcaaant, ZOMBI3, and I have been slowly patching this up to work on the XT862.
I've made up a stock (tweaked for VZW) 2.3.6 ROM and a lightly debloated one as well. Both have the same build.prop tweaks for battery life, the usual wifi scan, as well as the camera video modes tweak, plus some other stuff tacked onto the end of the build.prop.
What we changed was the build.prop (IIRC, I used a Liberty3 one that I touched up to my liking), eri.xml inside framework_res.apk, and libmoto_ril.so to get this up and running on the XT862. Since, I have added in 5.7.905 system apps to get some things running (MMS messaging mainly).
I have flashed these without a wipe (over SD 4.5 I think) and it seems to be fine, although I've only had it running maybe an hour now, so I can't attest to battery life. It may be fine without a wipe, it may be better with it. IDK.
One note for HandCent users, go into HC, menu> settings> application settings> default messaging application> all(sms & mms). This should fix double texts.
NOT WORKING:
It seems the first boot bootloops. Just battery pull and restart. It should boot. I'm running this debloated build exactly.
My stock camera FCs when entering panoramic mode. 3rd party apps such as ProCapture still work. This will be addressed after I get 1% battery and power menu buttons added (Thanks to BuckMarble!)
Here's the links to my DropBox.

Working 1% Mod
Dark (WIP) & light theme
Power button reboot options
Pulldown power widgets
Pulldown music controls??
...and, I know how to do none of those. Anyone wanna do it or teach/guide me though it?
Oh boy! I can teach the reboot and 1% stuff(gotta dig up the code for this one, been a while) I've recently become quite the android.policy master. Lol. As for the messaging stuff, im not sure where to go with that one.
EDIT: noticed quite a few com files missing from the framework folder that our xt862 uses. Compare an xt862 vzw rom to this one and try patching in the missing ones and see if that helps with the messaging. In system/framework.

Touched up the /system/framework folder with the missing files. If it isn't apparent already, I'm pretty new to this and really don't have too much of an idea of what I'm doing. Oh well, gotta learn somehow!
EDIT: Well, this didn't fix MMS, but it couldn't have hurt. Also, I've been getting some FCs from conversations.apk when receiving a text. I'll look into it tomorrow and keep working at this.

Nice work,
@jchenny i'd prefer a bloated version to go nuts on anyways.
Definately deserves it's own thread to be sure, you will have reboot/screenshot power menu functions plus power widgets and whatever else is needed on the weekend unless some1 else wants to get it done? Looking at you buckmarble and ZOMBI3, i'm using my phone for oncall work this week.
Again awesome release, can't wait to try it.
Edit: Grab my giant APN list apns-conf.zip from my sig link below and see if that fixes mms, most providers have been added manually... could simply be the conversations app not working correctly with the cdma buildprop commands changed and/or rot.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=1, swap out with the vzw versions of conversations.apk, mms.apk, messaging.apk, might also have to swap out the bluremail.apk, bluremailengine.apk and blursnmessagingengine.apok or perhaps use the aosp versions?
Could it be a google restoring settings thing, always gives me grief when i forget this after flashing lol.

I believe I have the freshest build on my DropBox. IIRC, I removed messaging.apk and dropped in mms.apk and that enabled MMS messaging. For my purposes, it's a fully working build. I haven't had any errors. Keep me updated if you hit any.
I think I'm going to start adding a time stamp to my .zips, I can't keep them straight. (Now I've added date and time stamps to preserve my sanity, or what remains.)
Oh yea! This is getting themed! I taught myself UOT Kitchen (it's so easy) and applied a META-INF workaround listed on their site to fix a flashing error and it's looking great. And is it just me, or does this boot quickly? Maybe I don't pay attention...

I remember having media player control status widgets, or what ever its called, on my old LG optimus 2x and I liked it, very convenient - maybe we can port that over or use code, like adding the controls to the far right as you scroll thru.
If that's makes sense.
Definitely lots of performance tweaks in there for boot, memory and gui speed.

I definitely want to implement more tweaks for battery life, speed, etc. Also, the 1% mod wasn't playing nicely with services.jar and causing reboots, so I marked that as experimental. [ROM][4.4.4][Unofficial] AOKP TF701T [06-27-1014][Nightlies]

Just wanted to share an unofficial build of AOKP for our TF701T's I did for myself.
Special thanks to Team AOKP for their wonderful rom!
Disclaimer: You flash it, you break it, you fix it. I will be update the builds weekly or so as new features are added into AOKP regularly.
Flash the same as any other rom. Use current Banks Gapps.
Known issue: I have enabled the glcomposer in the build.prop because the overall smoothness and battery life is greatly improved. However, because ASUS hasn't updated past 4.3, there may be occasional graphical glitches. You can disable the glcomposer by removing the one line in build.prop containing glcomposer in it BUT do try as it is first and see the difference for yourself. I have been using it for a couple weeks now and the graphical glitches are very small and barely noticeable.
Examples of where to see smoothness include: Scrolling homescreens. Swiping pages in App Drawer. Swiping pages in the widget drawer. Swiping away notifications while on homescreen. Swiping down notifications and quicktiles while on homescreen. Swiping to Google Now page in GEL launcher.

Excellent work. Very fast. No graphical glitches so far that i can see. Lets of options.:good:
It's great to see another ROM option for the tf701t! I just tried this out. The graphics really are quite smooth, and I love all of the customization options. Alas, as with cyanogenmod and cromi, Bluetooth functionality is severely diminished -- a mouse barely moves the cursor at all and a keyboard has severe typelag making it unusable. Any idea what's going on thereand how to fix it? I'm happy to be a guinea pig.
Awesome, glad to see other people trying this out!
I will post weekly build updates as often as possible.

It's very nice. The camera doesn't crash, and I the current version of Netflix doesn't crash. With some roms I've had to use 3.0.

I'll try and take a look, busy weekend/holiday up here. New build will be up in a couple days though.

So I just remembered I had an old Microsoft Notebook mouse 5000. I connected it and it works perfectly normal.
No lag or delay whatsoever...any chance you have another mouse to try?

Not a mouse, but I had another bluetooth keyboard, so I paired it up and gave it a try. Worked perfectly fine with no typelag :/ The one that doesn't work is a combo keyboard/touchpad. I don't think xda will let me link to a product on amazon, but it's a "tp cromeer" branded case with builtin bluetooth keyboard/touuchpad. Made for the N8000, but it fits the tf701t quite nicely.
Any idea why just this one device wouldn't work?

I actually have a mini combo keyboard touchpad I can try tonight.
My guess is going to be some sort of silly device incompatibility though...
I dont have any problems with this inexpensive bluetooth keyboard.
I do find though. I dont know if its possibly the kernel or android itself or if too many apps are running in the background. Input in general and reponsiveness is lost completely until reboot. It starts to lag all input I think. Like touch sensitivity etc. I wonder if anyone else has found this on to be the case on this device. Not sure if there is some app thatll restore it by killing processes possibly. Another thing I notice is that Android is running tonnes of threads. Compared to the few that run on linux. 600+ on android. Less then 100 threads on Linux usually depending on the distro. This rom right now has 900+ threads showing in htop. But it is still smooth as butter. Maybe thats not a big deal then.

I have not had any responsiveness issues with this device on any rom to be honest...
For clarity, are you seeing this problem on this rom or no?
Thank you for this ROM, it feels good to know that the TF701 has not been forgotten...:good:

It happens on all roms, but it would be a very subtle thing. I dont see it really as a problem. Just something that requires a reboot.

Yes -- I know exactly what you're talking about I think.
On any ROM I've tried, it happens. A fresh reboot always clears things up, but after running a few apps (and / or putting the tablet to sleep overnight perhaps?) the whole system lags a bit. General stuff, like switching programs and running apps like Tapatalk and Engadget (for example). I'm forced to kill apps manually, and that sometimes does the trick.
One thing I tried out yesterday that seems to be helping -- give this a shot too: in your developer settings, you'll see that you can restrict how many background processes are running. Currently, I have background processes limited to just 2 at a time (and also "strict mode" enabled)... and I have to say, I'm noticing a difference! Might take some more testing to see what the pros and cons of this are, but if it just means that I don't have background processes piling up on me, this might be a workaround?
Aside from that, has anyone tried Greenify with good results?

Honestly guys, I don't see this issue using this AOKP rom...I've left it for a few days no reboot, and I don't see any slowdowns/lag.
On a brighter note, I have a new build ready to be uploaded tonight.
I messed up some merges for battery/charging and was struggling to sort it out the last couple days.
All good now.
New build will be up later tonight.

[NOT SAFE TO FLASH!]First attempt at porting Android Wear to Galaxy Gear

Hello everyone!
This is my first attempt at porting Android Wear to the Galaxy Gear! I am not an experienced dev and this was done fairly quickly using null_23 as a base and the Gear Live system dump. This is not at all ready and definitely not ready to flash. If you do decide to flash it, you risk bricking your device. That being said, I am requesting that a more experienced dev check over my work. If it seems in order, then it will be tested, until such a time, test at your own risk.
Link: http://d-h.st/go2
UPDATE: [ONLY FOR BRAVE PEOPLE INTERESTED IN TESTING]: Since I used null_ as the base, the addons are still available, but please do not flash any of them! And use the stock kernel for the time being!
UPDATE 2: It might be a good idea to try using the custom kernel we have available to us. If I can get an updater script from the gear live or other android wear device and look in to modifying the bootclasspath in the preexisting custom kernel that we have.
UPDATE 3: I have figured out how to modify the bootclasspath, will make the modification shortly. I just need an updater script for an android wear device and we may have a booting android wear port.
UPDATE 4: Link to Attempt 2 coming soon. This has a modified updater script that will hopefully set all permissions correctly. This may be all it needs to boot properly. If not, then I may still need some help getting the Gear Live Kernel to modify our kernel's bootclasspath. If anyone would like to flash this, same as before, I can't guarantee anything will work or that your device will work afterward.
Link: AWAttempt2.zip
UPDATE 5: added my slightly modified updater files from fomey's null_ ROM attached at the bottom. fomey, if we get this working, could you package it in to null_ as a second ROM option?

Dude, you are fast!
I will not try it out right away because i just set up Null 23 and cloudnotifier so that to have notifications on the iPhone.
BTW, is there any chance that it will work with an iPhone. Ala Google Glass, that is.

I just tried it out with the installation through TWRP, definitely not working as you said yet, just boot loops. I've been looking around in the zip and I see no problems that were noticeable. Hopefully this port of android wear can happen!

Thank you for testing so quickly! I'm glad it did not cause any serious issues to your device. I will do some talking with some devs I know and see what I can get worked out. Porting to the 1 will actually be easier than to the 2 or Neo, since there is an android base for the 1, unlike the 2 and Neo which are Tizen only.
Do you have a change log? If this is based on Null, it's still 4.2, while the wear launcher, if I remember correctly, requires a newer version of Android, probably 4.4. Just curious what your plans are to deal with that. Seems to me the only real options are either editing the wear app or porting 4.4 aosp and hoping the launcher works. Theoretically, the gear live dump could be ported but the major difference between cpus makes it a much more difficult task than people originally hoped. I think the best chance would be if a dev team (ie CM) were to pick up the protect, but there's the downside to a large bounty: there's a lot of people wanting to go it alone for the cash.

Trust me, I'm not doing this in an attempt to get the bounty. The money doesn't interest me at all. As far as the change log goes, this is the absolute first attempt, so there hasn't been anything changed yet. So again, this was a quick attempt in an effort to get the ball rolling and get the community involved in the development.

No worries, I didn't think you were. You didn't have the typical billion "Donate please!" links that they would.
But what does first attempt mean? Just null kernel and modules with gear live system folder? I know a little about these things so I'd like to take a look, mostly out of curiosity, so I'd like to know what you've already done, preliminary as it is.
I agree though, we needed some kind of thread started and I agree that it's too early to put anything in the development forum.

Not just a swapped out system folder. the base of the null_ system folder is still there. I only migrated the things necessary for a standard port. The only issue is that there is no ROM for the gear live yet, so a proper permissions section is not available for me to port from the updater script of the live to the updater script of the galaxy gear. I'm pretty convinced that if someone with a little more knowledge than myself edited the updater script permissions section to set the proper permissions for the new files, that this would at least boot.
Hi guys, I stumbled across this ebay listing item number 161368138405 . The seller claims he will update your gear to 4.4.2 for £25 + p & p , I have emailed the developer a link to the bounty thread, hopefully he may be able to help.

Its some fake **** i think.
Would like to se a device info screen screenshot.
In the pictures he wirtes "This is not for the watch"
And later on "(1) Watch will become android 4,4,2"
Does he know what he is selling or not?
When he says "This is not for the watch", I think he means that you are not buying the watch in the picture. That is, you are not buying the physical watch, just the software upgrade.
I think it is high risk when you send your watch to him.

RevengeDevTeam: I have not necessarily classified this as a ROM, since it currently doesn't boot. That's why this is listed in the general thread. I am working on it, but there are no guarantees right now.
gingerdude: I'm pretty sure it's a scam. I wouldn't send him my watch if I were you.
