Hi everyone
I need some suggestions on custom roms
My mum has been using the gingerbread stock samsung rom with semaphore kernel
But the problem is my mom started to complaint about the responsiveness
She founds it's abit too laggy even in normal usage
Normally, i would just find some on the first page of the "development section" , and try my luck from there.
Here it comes the tricky part because the most important feature for her is the "FM radio", she always use it to listen the local (Hong Kong) stations everyday.
I wish to have some suggestions, even if it's not the latest cm10
Anything with a "good" FM radio will be just fine!!
Thx everyone
Ask in particular rom dev thread, or use slim bean

:highfive:
Could you provide settings for FM radio - cuz set on 'auto' hangs the application on my rom :<
FM Radio
Some said that Spirit FM breaks our speaker so I used Tune In Radio that requires Internet Connection
Thread closed as its a best ROM thread.

Hello All,
Have just started using this forum and failed to introduce myself previously, my name is Jay; I am 27 from DC but in Afghanistan for a few more months (yea..sucks) new to rooting, flashing and all that but I have recent interest in it and it passes the time better than most thing we are "allowed" to do over here.
I just switched from a HTC Desire to a Galaxy Captivate
So far...I have unlocked it (via cellunlocker.net), upgraded to the leaked 2.3.4 Gingerbread, Rooted using the 10step method posted here, Installed Victory v1.5 Rom, tried flashing Talon kernel but bricked the phone and had to redo the above...
My question is to those more knowledgeable than myself with all this...what is the best Kernel, Rom, Modem...whatever else...that I can have on this device to keep it running smoothly, fast and reliable?
I do all the basic call, txt, surf...play games, watch movies, use apps, etc...not a developer but want my phone to be tweaked as much as possible so it does not seem outdated or lag with new things being added.
My current settings are:
Baseband I897UCKH3
Firmware 2.3.4
Kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKH3-CL461307
Build VictoryRom_v1.5
There is nothing wrong with the phone...as I said above, if I could do more to it and have an overall better device and pass some time here I would enjoy that. Victory seems great but all I notice myself is the battery indicator has changed and...thats about it (a lot likely goes unnoticed by me)
I do have one problem with the phone that maybe a different modem can fix? (I hope) for some reason my GPRS will not work out here with my browser...I can use the market and apps that connect to the internet but my browser seems to be WiFi only. I have changed the settings from usa to europe since I am using a sim from over here but no luck...and added the gprs settings to the phone which allowed apps internet access but zero for browser..any ideas?
I really thank anyone who takes the time to reply...I am sure teaching a new person in this is annoying just as showing the new guy here how to clean his weapon...lol...but we were all new at everything once and I thank you all for reading my novel
-Jay
Jay,
Thank you so much for your service and contribution to our freedom, I know it must be hard to be away from the life you once knew. Hang in there It's not for nothing. Hopefully someone will be able to help with your GPRS settings. I am running the same setup on my captivate only I have used Boogs kernel to install clockwork recovery as well. You can flash boogs kernel over the kernel you have now and that will let you flash roms or speedmods later. If I were you I'd keep my eyes peeled for GPRS settings in your area and wait for EXT or speedmod kernel for the 2.3.4 They are saying RFS is pretty quick to begin with though. It may be hard to beat but im sure one of these great Devs will figure out a way to make 2.3.4 smokin fast. Once again thanks for doing what you do. Keep your head down Soldier!
Steve
If you like using your mobile providers Net, you might give I9000 ports a try. They allow for better Upload speeds but you will sacrifice Audience chip support (noise suppression processor that only I897 have). Also since I9000 source usually drop first they have all sorts of kernel mods like Voodoo sound, Voodoo color fix, BLN, init.d files tweaks like V6, among many more. Sadly I897 native roms always play catch up with I9000's.
Personally I prefer native rom, because they tend to run smoother for longer periods of time (I9000 tend to slow down over time on my phone, but thats just my experience) and I don't use ATT's network a whole lot (90% of the time I'm around a wifi connection) and I like the audience chip, it is a phone before anything else.
Edit: Also there isn't a "best" rom, kernel or modem. Each rom has their own pros and cons, same as Kernels. And no 2 phones are the exact same so not all of them take well to all the tweaks, mods, etc. And most of the time i9000 kernels wont work with i897 roms, at least in GB.
Hi everybody!
I see here a lot of people from Europe but I'm in Canada and hope for some help.
I just got LG o2x and trying to use it with cheap data plan in Ontario through 7/11 Speakout.
First problem - they filter traffic so I have to use proxy. And even then phone is really slow and sometimes even market has to be reloaded couple times... My connection drops sometimes inside the factory I work in and then doesn't pick up... I guess you know.
I've read about people saying that this phone has great hardware but poor software
I already rooted my phone (to get autoproxy running).
Now I need to put custom ROM and kernel...
That's where it gets confusing. I have Barnes&Nobles Nook Color with CM7.1 on it. And I like it. Also I have Acer A500 with stock HC3.2. But I'm still dummy in Android
From what I understand I can put CM7.1 (Thanatos2x v5.1 or Temasek's Kang), MoDaCo. Right? Any other suggestions? But then there is tonns of kernels... How to choose? I just need basic features to surf net and create hot spot for my kids tablets
And another question is BASEBANDS. What are they and should I change it or not? I'm in Canada but getRIL says I have:
RIL 0725 (V20I, Italy)
Baseband 1035.21_20110725.
Thanks for any suggestions or pointing to right direction!
Aleks
You can flash CM7 temasek's KANG on your phone (link in sig)
A kernel I would recommend you to use is vadonkas ETaNa Kernel. (link in sig) It's a great kernel with good performance and battery life.
You don't necessarily have to change your baseband. Only when you really have problems with signal or call quality. A baseband is more or less a driver which regulates signal etc. Changing your BB requires a full wipe, therefore I wouldn't recommend it. If you do have bad signal, you can mostly solve this problem by installing a matching RIL with your BB. GetRIL app will tell you which ones match and which one don't. If this doesn't help, then you should change your BB.
Or, you can read a bit and not spam the fora..
I want to use my good old nexus one for gps logging only. Any ideas for a rom or a simple and stable way to cook my own ?
Thanks in advance!
Why do you have to bother about that. Just don't open any apps
Use any stable Gingerbread or even Froyo bare-Android ROM.
I have been looking for something similar actually. Ive turned my N1 into a (mostly) dedicated music player and would love a bare-bones, CM or MIUI-based ROM with all the phone components pulled.
someone started working on one called MelodyMod but the development stopped suddenly and that ROM still has remnants of phone bits and bad battery drain.
if anybody can do this Ill buy you a delicious beer!

I guess the idea is to test your own skills in modding your phone and see, what the different developers would like us to have. After a few installs, you are hooked at getting your daily fix of new ROM and will suffer withdrawal symptoms, if no new ROM are a available for even a short period!!
Even if all the latest ROMs are not fully functional, they still add many new features to our phone.
I have become very enthusiastic about my phone again and I have had it for almost two years now. The longest time I have ever had a mobile phone.
What also is interesting is that you are able to try so many new apps, that only works if your phone is rooted.
So the benefits are many and if you are not satisfied, there are very good guides on how to go back to stock.
Good luck

CM 9 don't support Hardware acceleration. Thats the major problem that i know

Hardware Acceleration in CM9 for LG O2X is not working as of now (Needs LG to release an ICS based kernel).
Due to which:
- Video Recording doesn't work.
- Will not be able to play HD videos.
- Some of the system apps will start to lag after some usage (Phone & Contacts).
thank you . i hope the promised official ICS update will reach soon .

Ok, so CM 9 and CM 10 has the following problems:
1) No Hardware acceleration which means:
a) You CAN'T use your video camera at all. Now, I know that some says that you can use Videocam illusion, but that app can record only very low quality videos, which I found to be pretty useless (a lot of CPU use for that low quality).
b) Google Chrome is not supported due to it's need to access the GPU, but this is not so important due to other very good browsers
c) You will experience scrolling jittering. That being said when you will try to change between photos in the gallery (usually there is the bigest problem), or between songs in some media players by swaping on the screen, you will see something like the photo or album art is going back from where it came, but the result is good: changing the photo / song. The only problem is the visual one.
d) Gameloft games, and especially those with a little video at the begining will not work until you delete those clips from the instalation folder.
2) No radio application => no more FM radio for you. Wi-Fi (or a really well data plan) resolves this thing by using it for Tune-in Radio, a very good application for radio. I prefer to use it even on GB roms, because of the very good sound quality regardless the standard radio that sometimes loses the signal.
3) On CM 10 there are a few more bugs like no automatic brightness, or battery drain due to Wi-fi. Regardless all theese bugs, I found CM 10 from ParanoidAndroid to be a way much better rom than any other around here. Keeping the Wi-Fi off I don't experience any battery drain (more than that my battery last longer than anytime) and my favorite no data connection lost (I don't know if this was a carrier problem or not, but before switching to CM 10 i had a lot of data connection problems).
4) Not to be forgotten the lag on installing applications from Google Play Store. I found this problem on almost every single rom I've tried, and I tried almost all of them. I think I found only one or two roms w/o this problem, but being a maniac for the latest updates I've chosen the ICS and JB roms instead of a very stable one
5) No GPS working on CM 10
Now it's your decision. If you can live w/o video camera and gps and try to not get angry at every scroll bug you should really try the new CM 9 and 10 roms

I know this may sound weird to you, but: I can survive without any ROM.
It's not that your life depends on your smartphone, does it?
Just be happy with what you got.
Hi Guys,
Im a noob but have been lurking here for the last few years. Have done a search and im either retarded (quite possible) or the answers arent here (not likely).
First off I have an old i897 (AT&T) with CM10 4.1.2. Love it the CM breathed new life in to my phone!
Anyway have two queries.
I found the DSP Manger effect it that comes with CM awesome - was great when using a FM transmitter for compression / bass boost etc. Anyway wasnt sold on Apollo - interfaced rocked and with DSP manager sounded great but my mp3 collection is messy at best and I use mp3 tags heavily. Have downloaded RocketPlayer Pro from the market - and really happy with that except the DSP manager doesnt seem to work with it. Any ideas on this one and how to make it work? Read the DSP manager readme and it said that it should?
Secondly - my GPS has never worked - like ever in the last 2 years of owning this phone!. The modem im using is the UGKG3 and phone reception (3g) is awesome, I also get good download speeds on my mobile network (Telecom NZ). Ive replaced GPS.conf many times and tried loads of NTP server / settings but as yet I dont think ive ever had a successful GPS connection. GPS test has been running for 10 minutes and it finds 4 sat's but doesnt lock / use any. I know the GPS is notoriously crap but shouldnt it lock eventually??
Anyway sorry if this is in the wrong spot or been covered a million times already
Thanks
Greg

Well first off, GPS is a reck on this phone lol. Some areas are better than other but only by doing some mods in the config and changing your modem can you make it a bit better.
I haven't used RockPlayer, although, you should check if there's a setting making it that it has control over your sound, if so, uncheck it and DSP manager should work again. On a side note, I duno if it is cooked into CM's kernel but Voodoo sound could be a really good alternative!
