4.2.2 Performance & Impressions - Nexus 4 General

What are your impressions with the update so far? Any noticeable changes in performance? Batter life? post your findings in this thread.
So far the battery life does seem to be better, but maybe it's just placebo. Gotta give it a few more days. It is definitely faster, especially google voice.

Chrome seems quicker to load pages to me.

No noticeable performance or battery life improvement here.

I think there was some overall improvement in performance and battery life. Nothing major though.

what i've noticed so far..
performance much the same to me
screen colours, better
battery life better (can browse internet on wifi without phone getting hot now too)
wifi notifications still delayed or don't come at all when phone is in sleep

Too much for nothing None of the known bugs were fixed such as WiFi +Bluetooth crash and WiFi delay in deep sleep...overall this update is like never happened for me.

AW: 4.2.2 Performance & Impressions
Performanse, hmmm hard to say for a snappy phone like this. Cammera app starts much faster and browsing seems improved.
I noticed that the vibrating is stronger when arive calls. The calling delay is solved. Collors much better. Battery lasts like 20% more. Now my phone is to love

My battery life is significantly better. I suffered with hisc_msm wake lock before. It's nearly nonexistent now. The last two days I had 50% remaining on 17 hours uptime and 2 hour+ screen time. On 4.2.1 it would be screaming at me to charge with the same usage.
The colors look better. Maybe I'm crazy?
I also noticed the vibration pattern is a bit different.
The incoming call delay is gone.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD

My performance has gone worse since I updated to 4.2.2, my phone gets slow everytime I have many background apps running, I did not have this issue before, when I open the last opened apps thing and slide them all away, the phone is faster again.

I have definitely seen an improvement to battery life, for the past 2 weeks i have owned the phone i would on average get a screen time of around 1 hour 30 minutes at the 50% mark with a up time of around 16 hours, today is the first full day i have had the phone since the update and i am currently at 65% with a screen time of 1 hour 30 minutes and up time of 17 hours.

My phone gets hotter and if anything my battery life is worse. Not impressed.

It's crazy how some people are seeing marked battery life improvement, while others battery life is worse.

Battery life has improved alot.
Browsing web pages has become a bit faster.
Super smooth.

Chrome is definitely quicker than what it was in 4.2.1

my battery life is slightly improved and my phone doesn't get super hot anymore like it did before even just browsing the web. definitely a good update imo
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

I have to say that battery life has improved for me as well. I notice significantly less blue bars in the awake section on battery history details. Not sure about performance, I think it's a tad smoother, but it might be my imagination. Very sure about the battery though. 13h20m and at 59% (screen on for 1h 46m, 15m of voice calls). I'd usually be around the 45% mark at this point.

Had the update for about 3 days .. It is more snappier, vibration is different but can be changed back to normal vibration for SMS, more stronger also. It does lag tiny bit when switching back and fourth on the app drawer but this was like this on 4.2.1. Does not kill me though.

I had Android OS battery drain before from the wake-locks bug (I don't recall the correct term, someone mentioned it earlier). After the upgrade the wake-locks are gone and battery is significantly better.

The phones hardware is a beast, so while android became slower and laggier with 4.2, this phone didn't skip a beat, so I didn't notice a performance gain, and quite frankly dunno what really could be faster than it already was. Battery life is improved, quite a bit actually, I got good battery life during sleep when connected to a wifi network, but it was pretty meh when on hspa +, now it gets great mileage regardless. And it doesn't seem to drain as much when your using it.
Noticed the lockscreen bug is fixed, and as for bluetooth, it worked fine before for me so I didn't notice a difference. On the downside of everything, call volume seems dramatically lower, I don't know what they did but I noticed on other third party apps volume is fine, but using the stock phone app, call volume sucks. As far as I know, there is no way to replace the actual default phone app, not while stock anyway, and even if you could, a third party phone app only exists on oem phones ie sense, touchwiz, motoblur, LGUI, etc. So Google fixes most things but breaks something else... Ugh overall I have to say 4.2 has definitely taken android back to honeycomb, just wish they could fix it for once and for all!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

Battery life in infinitely better for me. Only lose 2-3% overnight vs 10-15% on 4.2.1. As far as performance, seems about the same.

[Q] Anyone else regretting purchase?

I just got the Vivid on Friday and I'm starting to think I made wrong choice and shouldve gotten skyrocket. I love everything about it, camera, interface, gorgeous screen, etc..BUT, the battery is by far the worst i have ever experienced with a cell phone. By battery was completely dead by 3 this afternoon after fairly light use. Even with task killer, I'm at a loss for this battery's pathetic power. Anyone experiencing same problems? I don't expect a super battery, but when using the iphone 4 prior, the battery was worlds better, seriously. Any ideas? Are u guys experiencing same?
I love the phone you have to tweak the battery settings let the battery power up and then power down a couple of times I now get over two days on the same battery. The skyrocket has its own issues GPS which never sets burn in from the screen etc.
I had the Skyrocket for a few days and went back to get this phone. The Skyrocket does have it's share of issues. 1. No FM Radio which I kinda Like. 2. Not a fan of the UI, as I tend to like Sense more. 3. When watching movies in the dark let's say you get a black screen or dark for a moment, you can see small lines going through the movie until it changes to lighter scenes. If you can deal with those things than I would say go for the Skyrocket as it already has root and an OC/UV kernel plus some Roms are starting to pop up.

Were you baking a cake with it? I get at least 14 hours out of mine with moderate use. I switched from an iPhone 4 and have absolutely no issues. What's your brightness level set at, and what are your network/data settings (i.e. Wifi on all day, auto-sync, background data, GPS, etc.)?

Would you mind telling us how you're getting "over two days"? I'm happy with a full day and having to charge in the evening, but over two days would be phenomenal..
Also, I'm totally satisfied with this phone.. I think it's exceptional, even coming from the iPhone 4's awesome battery life. Boom.
Wow, 2 days on one charge?! Can't imagine that with what i've seen so far...hopefully after powering up a couple times, it'll improve. Do i need to let it drain completely before powering up? The battery is the only thing i'm disappointed in right now, but obviously its a major issues if the battery is just brutally weak
The first day I got this phone, it was dead in about 6 hours. However, when I use it like a phone, I'm getting ok battery life out of it. It's now at 40 percent and it's 8 pm.

Most task killers cause slower performance and in turn worse battery life. Android OS is designed to keep the RAM 2/3 full, so that apps you use are kept there, and don't require CPU cycles when you need them later, and it will automatically kill apps when it needs the RAM.
Almost all android phones see marked battery life improvement after a few charge cycles.

I am getting well over a day of usage. usually get a day and a half with a modest amount of wifi/mobile data usage and well over an hour 'on screen' time. almost posted a screen shot when i was at 1 day 19 hours and ~20% left, with a majority of time with wifi on and well over an hour of screen time.
auto screen brightness, no auto rotate, manual control of data and syncing.
I like to get 4 hours screen time out of a full charge. But I had an above average day of phone calls. Not bad... Definitely not bad for HTC and no modified kernel.

I'm coming from the HTC Desire and man o' man does this thing smoke. And the RAM. The Desire was so RAM starved it wasn't funny. While I did take advantage of some of the locally developed ROMs, I was just getting tired of playing games to get around the lack of memory on the Desire. This phone feels good too. To some it may be a bit heavy, but I like the weight and the larger (over the Desire 3.7") screen is very nice too.

That might be part of the problem. Google greatly improved memory management starting with FroYo (Android 2.2) so you really don't need to use a task killer. In fact, using 3rd party task killers interferes with the OS's internal system, which leads to slower performance and poorer battery life.
See this and this for more info regarding task killers.
I'd start with uninstalling the task killer, and then managing some of the peripheral features like GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, etc. Nothing is free battery-wise. If you don't use them, turn them off.

I'm totaly happy with the battery... getting at least a day and a half with normal use.
after updating its definitely drainng fast.
No drain here. I get 10-12 hours a day with heavy use and easily a day with moderate usage. Was roughly the same before update as well.

4326mAh battery, 2A charger, 2.1 hours theoretically. Realistically, 2.5-3.0 if pretty much empty.
If you're using a non standard cable or charger, who knows what the charger is actually outputting. If you're charging from your computer USB Port, that's 500mAh, so 8.6+ hours. Some random phone charger, probably 1000mAh, 4.3+ hours, etc.
The brightness of the display adds to some of the drain I notice, when possible I keep mine somewhat on the dimside, obviously if I'm in an area of bright light and it hard to see then I'll crank up the brightness.
Can't complain about battery usage.. It's amazingly energy efficient even on a stock kernel considering the horsepower this thing has.. I average 20hrs or so with moderate to heavy usage.

I think battery life is pretty good
I've had really bad drains since 4.1.2. I think I've narrowed it down to an issue with Google Play. I've noticed it several times - Very good battery life, but then it will go down fast, even when sitting unused. If I check battery usage, Google Play is always number one with >50% of the use.
If I force close GP, all will be well for about a day, but eventually it happens again.
I also felt it, but only by that much...not too obvious. From full charge, after only night idle, drop 3 percent compare to last time 1 or 2 percent

[Q] Real life HTC One talk time, 5 hours?

My several day old HTC One is a fantastic phone (best I have owned yet), but I'm having to be very careful to keep the battery lasting an entire day.
In particular I am noticing that voice calls are the biggest drain on my battery.
2 hours and 20 minutes of talk time used 55% of my battery life yesterday.
I have read multiple sources with tests pegging the talk time at 14 hours+ (AnandTech, HTC official).
Is this typical or is there potentially a software or hardware issue?
I haven't done any serious tweaking to the software, and am running powersaver and have screen dimmed to 30%.
Thanks!
You have to see a lot of thing...
1) You had the full signal for all the calls?
2) Your phone was all time with the idle screen?
3) Did you have 3G or 4G on?
Details
I have three bars usually. I am always in 3G. As far as idle screen sometimes I am browsing while phone call is happening.
Does the strength of the signal effect talk time?
Strength of signal definitely affects the talk time. Also if you put the phone on 2g mode when you are not using data and just talking you will get a better battery life. Check for wakelocks as well. I also discovered when I was using htc sense launcher my app usage was about 89% but now I'm using smart launcher and my app usage is 70% and I'm getting better battery life. I've also disabled the maps coz it has a lot of wake locks.

Also, in my opinion, is the best phone I already had and I have been a iPhone fan for a longue time... With LTE one is very difficult to manage the battery for one day... If you can't charge during the day you are in trouble... Other complain I have is the high temperature on the back if i'm using for a longer time....

That's really low compared to yours. Also, using the speakers eat up a ton more battery, and if the screen is on as well, well that's another issue
I think I figured it out...
In case anyone else reads this thread, after some testing I think I found out what was causing the huge spike in voice app usage.
I now believe that playing music through the phones speakers counts toward the usage of the voice app.
When I use the speakers, huge battery drain. When I don't it's ok.
Hopefully case closed!

I simply can not get good battery life with this phone!

I've been a 32GB unlocked HTC One owner since day one. Battery life for me has been very mediocre, barely enough to make it through a work day with light to moderate usage. For some reason this phone drains so much on standby it's ridiculous. Last week I finally gave in and decided to root. I've found that standby still sucks but the screen uses less power so I can get more screen on time on average. I'm running InsertCoin with ElementalX kernel and for every hour of standby I lose ~3+ percent of battery! I'm not even using the phone! I have EVERY APP on my phone Greenified, Google Search, Gmail, and Play Music uninstalled, I have the phone undervolted and monitor everything with Wakelock Detector and GSAM. Nothing looks weird to me but for some reason my standby still sucks. I've literally crippled my phone and have all location services turned off and I still can't get good standby time. My iPhone 5 could last forever on standby, literally 3-5 hours without losing a single percent. I've been using Android for years and the only phone that got GOOD battery life was the Note 2. At this point I'm considering going back to it because I'm sick of micromanaging my phone and still not getting good results.
Is anyone else having similar issues? There are some people here getting 6+ hours on screen time with ridiculous numbers like 38 hours without a charge. I can't get anywhere near that even with the screen on the dimmest settings. I don't understand how there's so much variation in battery life. I don't play any games or watch movies on the phone, just simple social networking and music for 30 minutes a day.
The HTC one isn't the best phone when it comes to standby time but still,I find battery life to be pretty good, super easy to get through a work day. Maybe you have an app that is running in the background and draining your battery. Install betterbatterystats and try monitoring your apps. That's all I can think of. Also take a look at the battery stats thread and see if folks can help you there.

As you are well aware, there can be a myriad of causes. I just want to recount one example where I made a settings adjustment which cut my battery life by over half. I doubt very much this is the reason for your poor battery life but perhaps others may benefit.
About a month ago I purchased a brand new router. Being a tinkerer, I was fiddling with this and that on the router trying to optimize everything. I also played with the phone and amongst various settings I decided to turn on "best wifi performance". The One has the warning about "may consume more power", but I did not think much about it as I knew I had very good battery life and believed that a bit more power would probably not change matters that much.
Later on in the evening I saw that my battery life was horrendous and I started scratching my head as to why it had gone to hell in a hand basket. Finally, I recalled that I had adjusted "best wifi performance" and did a search on this and found a thread on another forum.
I turned it off, recharged my phone and followed battery life keenly. 24 hours later, I could see that my battery life had returned to normal (normal being between 4-6 hours of screen on time over the duration of a full charge).
Interested if the mods will lock this thread in that they may feel that this should fall under the battery stats thread.

Battery life of the One is pretty good for most people but there are some issues for some of us and lately some apps have updated and introduced even more bugs causing drain, I'll list some of the causes I found:
-msm_hsic_host wakelock bug on kernels pre- android 4.2.2
-location bug in google play store 4.1.6, fixed in 4.1.10
-whatsapp post juli 1st update (and the one before)
-htc usage reporting (on by default on s-off devices)
-reporting location setting on (in maps)
-some sim cards might not work to well which cause more frequents wake up (eg. in the netherlands vodafone sim cards with a serial number starting with 7 )
to properly debug you need wakelock detector and better battery stats (free here for xda users, search for it)
Edit:Just got an update for Whatsapp (and Facebook and Skype all at once), let's hope it fixes the battery drain.....
Maybe undervolted too much.

Although I have pretty good battery life when screen on (~5-6 hours), I have noticed the same drain as you when phone is in standby. The only huge wakelock that I have found is called 10113, AudioOut_4 or system*wakelock* mediaserver. I know that this process is for audio output but its draining like 20% of my battery when standby I was wondering if you have noticed this same wakelock on your phone?
I whatsapp and check Twitter news apps sometime a game.
And i can do easy 12 hours max 17 with this usage .

Before I used to get 6 to 7 hours of battery life now I m averaging a day or two with moderate to light use. I m satisfied ! :good:

I think you misunderstand what overheat means. The HTC One does NOT overheat. You feel the heat more cos of it's metal body, which is releasing the heat through the metal surface. It's directing heat AWAY from the internals, unlike the S4 which uses the same chip and keeps all the heat inside cos plastic is a terrible heat transfer medium.

I know that but mine was like 48 C at the peak when its hot which is very uncomfortable to hold that's why I said overheat. Anyway now its fixed and I don't have any complaints.

Try without using spotify for a day. I see them even if I dont listen to any music. They appear with just notification sounds D:

Also be sure to not use screen lock sounds or input sounds... the lock sound is the worst. I think it causes a wakelock bug that has been on Android since 4.0

Battery Life

So I've been pretty unimpressed by battery life so far. Barely getting 3.5 hours
Anyone else getting better?

Gonna need more info than that. You talking screen on time? or total? under what settings? full screen brightness?
Yeah screen on time with auto screen brightness. Pretty much on LTE all day. Only disabled bloat apps.
Full day with it, unplugged at 3am and at 8:38pm cst, I am still at 48%. Now I don't use facebook or Tweeter so that helps my battery life. Wifi at work weak and slow so I am on LTE most of the time.

Same here. Only around 4 hrs with regular use. This device needs root.
Easily getting through a day with the phone. Most of the bloat disabled, moderate usage, Bluetooth/NFC/Wi-Fi always on, though mostly on LTE. I certainly don't expect this thing to last like my Note 4, but I'm pleased with the battery life. I get home with time to spare, and plug it in every night like any other phone, so its all good.

Root doesn't mean better battery life. My nexus 5 had about the same battery and got about the same battery life as my s6. And that's rooted, stock, slimrom, and cataclysm. My G3 has about 500 more mAh than the s6 and I get about 5 hours of screen time. Stock battery was better than cyanogen battery.
It's not 2012 anymore. Root is almost obsolete. It's good for app removal, rooted app functionality, and customization. Even if underclocked and undervolted it doesn't change dramatically. If u want a better battery, buy a phone with a bigger battery. MOST people don't look at their phone for 25% of their awake hours (if avg sleep is 8 hrs.) The s6 will give u 3.5-4hrs of screen time on 14-15 hours of use. That is plenty for MOST users

We badly need root. Rooting my phone has always improved the battery life and performance of your phone.
Battery life today was better I think. Screen-on time didn't even show up in the battery usage list, so i'm not sure how much it used. 20.5hrs since unplugging with 14% left.
This will definitely be a phone I'll have to get rid of after a year. With constant charging and a sealed battery, this device really doesn't have a long life. That's my main concern.
Someone in another thread turned off Enhanced LTE (Voice over LTE) under network settings and saw a much better battery life (or lack of drain).
I am experiencing insane WiFi battery drain. I am foregoing the use of WiFi in the mean time. Seems to help.

Same. I tested mine and the drain is far less with WiFi off all together. No WiFi and I can get 6-7+ sot.

dont know how true this is. i updated mine and going to see if it does indeed improve battery life.

I updated the Samsung push service and it seems to have improved battery life for me. I will also try turning off the HD Voice and see how it performs..

I updated mine plus turned off Wi-Fi and the hotspots setting in advanced Wi-Fi and battery life has improved. I still see screen as being one of the lowest factors for battery consumption. Our gs6 must have a very battery efficient display. Android os is now my top battery drain. I'm hoping an update to android 5.1 improves the system battery usage. I know it did on my nexus 6.

if you heavily use it well.. thats pretty normal.. mine can last a day if i don't use it for browsing just sms.. but for calling it would mean smaller life

I was getting horrible battery life like you because of cell standby but I disabled enhanced lte and did a cache delete in recovery and now I'm getting almost 5.5 hours of screen on time with brightness set at 25%-50% on WiFi/lte. If you want I have screenshot.

I can vouch for this myself. I was getting pretty bad drain to the point where I was about to return the phone.
The cache wipe seemed to work wonders. Along with deleting and reinstalling google play services (I searched google play services in chrome, clicked the link and jninstalled reinstalled uodates , then did cache wipe)
