older Xperia devices sometimes got issues after unlock of bootloader (BRICK after FOTA update) - you have been warned
why to unlock bootloader?
u can flash custom ROMs/Kernels
u dont need to worry if the new firmware can be rooted or not as with unlocked bootloader u can always ROOT ur device
Sony gives sneak-peaks/preview builds of latest OS which requires unlocked bootloaders, as they did with Xperia 2011/2012 line, so who knows may be Sony may give early builds of next android OS
Most of this is taken from lollylost100's his tutorial from ARC thread (all credits for that concise tutorial go to him, i have elaborated on a few things and added device specific changes)
btw i dont have this device, most of this testing was done remotely on a users phone... so thanks a lot to him for helping out!!!
[ before we begin unlocking bootloader ]
get the IMEI code for ur device: type *#06# in phone dialer to find it out, note only the digits (no dashes)
download the fastboot package
IMPORTANT: if you are using Windows 8 you will need to enable few things to allow driver installation
download the latest FlashTool Xperia Driver Pack and install fastboot drivers (common) & adb drivers for this device from the list!
make sure u have a windows PC with USB cable to connect the phone
power down ur phone and keeping the Volume Up button pressed connect the USB cable to PC this will trigger FASTBOOT mode and windows will start driver installation, which should be automatically done
once drivers are installed just disconnect cable and power on device
[ how to unlock ] (official way)
Go to: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ and read everything!
At the bottom click 'Start Unlocking the Bootloader'
First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your phone by checking the service menu. In your phone, open the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.
Click to collapse
after u have verified that u can unlock bootloader, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Continue"
you will get numerous prompts, read all info and if u agree click on "Accept"/"OK"/"Proceed"
finally u will get a "Create Unlock request" page, enter your IMEI (sometimes the last digit needs to be removed for this to work), name and email address
You should now receive your unique unlock key via EMAIL, SAVE THIS KEY SAFELY
Extract fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar and open fastboot folder
Hold SHIFT and right click on the background of the folder
Select 'Open command window here'
Connect your phone in fastboot mode (turn phone off, hold Volume UP button and plug in USB Cable) [make sure drivers are installed as explained above)
In the cmd windows type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
If a value is returned (it will return 0.5), it means the phone is correctly connected
Type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0xKEY and replace KEY with the key which u received earlier.
You're device should now be bootloader unlocked
If this tutorial is too much for you then itskapil wrote a step-by-step guide (and recorded a video also):
-Instructions: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-unlock-bootloader-xperia-arc-play-neo-pro/
-Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRH3pC7MhEA
(the above videos and some steps are for Xperia 2011 devices, but most the steps are same for Xperia Z)
Relock procedure is posted here

Relocking bootloader
With the latest release of Flashtool it is now possible to relock bootloader.
Download the latest flashtool from:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2162907
Important
DO NOT USE ANY FTF TO RELOCK BOOTLOADER! THOSE OLD FTFs DO NOT WORK FOR THE 2013 DEVICES!!!
before u relock bootloader u have to be on pure stock kernel (flash only the kernel.sin using flashtool), else the device WILL NOT BOOT after relock
Steps:
now start Flashtool and click on BLU button
u will be asked to connect device in flashmode
once u connect the device u will get a prompt to "Relock"
click on it and when prompted disconnect the device

Probably protection of their intellectual property which is, admittedly, very cool.
Question: you only have BE on stock. If you stay on stock anyway, why unlock?
Anyway, no flaming and trolling here. That was not the point. Sony is cool and community friendly as ****.

So we are only talking about Sony software here that won't work with unlocked bootloader, right? And BE isn't more than a little screen calibration, is it? I mean the screen will still look awesome without it!?

Relocking is not yet fully and flawlessly possible.
The current method for relocking worked for some, others posted myriads about how it screwed all up. As the level of technical proficiency of those users is unknown and not really determinable, at this time is probably safe to say, it's a) up to you to try and b) may work with a certain chance or c) it may not.

There is still a possibility that it does not work with your device (right now).
If you access the service menu and look up the "Bootloader unlocked" status it should either read "yes" (unsuccessful) or "unknown" (successful) if you have used the tool.
Also note that DRM keys are not coming back, so BE2 will still be missing after a relock.

[Q] bootloader not allowed xperia z

my phone is showing me that it cant unlock boot loader when i see in service test bt typing *#7378432#*#*
i am from india and using normal xperia z (not any docomo or any)
can any one say what to do for getting permission for unlocking boot loader
Short answer - you can't unlock it ever.
The only exception would be if the status changed to disallowed after rooting. There is a fix for that somewhere in Doomlord's rooting thread.

If your device says Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No, it means you CAN'T unlock your bootloader.

Unless it was rooted, as this sometimes changes the status to 'No' as stated in the first post of Doomlord's thread. I used bin4ry's tool and the bootloader status was untouched.
Edit:
DooMLoRD said:
if u had an unlockable bootloader device, after using this method the device will be detected as LOCKED or unlock not possible!!! (to fix this use this fix)
...........
Troubleshooting:
if your device has unlockable bootloader then after applying this hack the bootloader status will turn "Bootloader unlock allowed: No"
in that case dont worry the users have reported that doing a repair via SEUS will flash back stock firmware and turn this status to "Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes" (the same might also be achieved by flashing a stock FTF using FlashTool )

Hello, everyone.
I know nothing about rooting, flashing or unlocking bootloader. What I really need is to unlock the network of my phone. It was bought in Portugal locked to the TMN network. I am now back to Brazil and want to use it here. The conventional method of unlocking network is buying a code, but I want to know if there's a way to do it with no expense. What do you guys recommend?

Hello and welcome to the forums.
The only way to network unlock this device is with a code, either from the original network provider or from an online seller. It is not possible to unlock any other way.
Additionally, as you're new here, I will suggest you should start a new thread when you have a question in future instead of bumping a very old thread unrelated to your question.

I'm thankful that there are still wanting to address this issue of the bootloader not being unlocked. So my question is as such - Is there anyway (either by contacting T-Mobile, or Sony) that my phone, which is is SIM Unlocked (I know SIM unlock has nothing to do with bootloader unlock), can be bootloader unlocked? I'm just hoping that I can either get with Sony/Tmobile and have them do it, or even if there is a legitimate paid service out there then I will do that too! Any kind of help or anything would be appreciated! All I read is, 'If you're bootloader says no than that means NO', or I will often see people say that their bootloader says no and yet they can still enter fastboot mode.
Currently my device is Sony Xperia Z C6606 Tmobile version. I'm going to try to switch out my microUSB cord and see if fastboot works then. I'm still trying to have some kind of hope that maybe it will somehow work and I can flash a custom rom. Currently, whenever I plug in my phone into any computer, (with drivers installed) it never even shows up in the Device manager so I'm thinking it's an issue with my cord. It charges the device only.
Or should I just sell this phone and get a different android phone where I can unlock the bootloader? lol
Thanks!
You can only flash stock based roms with a stock, unmodified kernel.
Fastboot will connect even with a locked bootloader, but the commands you can use are extremely limited and in your case you cannot do anything with it at all. Your USB cable is not the problem.
If you want to flash CM/PA/AOSP etc, then you'll have to buy a new device. The bootloader is non unlockable. Nobody has cracked the security yet and I don't think anyone is even working on it, to be honest.
Sony or T-Mobile will not unlock it.

How to check if bootloader is unlocked

Hi so I found some easy way to unlock bootloader from xperiafirmware(DOT)com (not allowed to post link because new account at xda) because Sony's official instruction are not mac user friendly (for me anyway). So i tried them and it want smoothly until i realised that sdcard was not wiped. So I'm doubting whether it is unlocked. The instructions where:
4. how to unlock your bootloader
a) download and install latest Flashtool from here (mirrors Google Drive or Mega)
b) start Flashtool and click on BLU button on the top
c) turn off your phone and when Flashtool shows pop up window, connect phone to PC with holding volume down button
d) click on get unlock key button, it will switch you to Sony Mobile website, here complete all boxes
e) copy IMEI form Flashtool to Sony Mobile site, than you will get unlock code to your mailbox
f) copy unlock key to Flashtool window and than click unlock
g) connect phone with holding volume up button when Flashtool shows pop up window
h) wait to unlock finish
I did this using the latest flashtool 0.9.13.0-mac. and the instructs where for Z1 C6903

Everything seems right, Why are you worried??
Unlocking bootloader shouldn't wipe SD card, you are not flashing or wiping data, you are just unlocking the bootloader.
Not all phones can be unlocked by the way. Mine can't be for instance, check in diagnostics.
EDIT
Dial *#*#7378423#*#* and goto service info / configuration
if the last line says
bootloader unlocked: Yes
Then its unlocked
if it says
bootloader unlocked allowed: Yes
then it is locked but you can unlock it
if it says
bootloader unlock allowed: No
then you cannot unlock it
It say Bootloader unlocked: yes
So I think it's unlocked thanks for the reply

Prior to attempting to unlock, do what Greg wrote and as he wrote if it says no then youre stuffed by all accounts.
Which sucks so bad it's unreal.
I went ahead and tried anyway, just didn't work, would be good to see what the actual differences are between models, must be a way to migrate some stuff to get it to work, notice i wrote stuff as i have no idea what that stuff would be.

Potentially yes, I can't advise you to go for it, you will need to weigh up if it's right for you or not? Much more customisation vs possible loss of warranty, personally i'd do it but that's me.
You would have to decide for yourself.

Hey guys
I have a similar problem. I want to flash DoomLord's custom kernel but the command is not allowed. I found out bootloader unlock allowed does not mean it is unlocked yet, so that is the problem why it is not allowed. However, I do want to backup my DRM keys first. Is this possible? My phone was rooted before I flashed 4.3, so it is not rooted anymore.

u welcome!
just checked the screenshot says that BL unlock allowed: status YES which define that ur BL (bootloader) is not unlocked yet!
make sure u are using the appropriate tool that works for ur device after u get the BL code from Sony, then follow the instructions in Sony where u got the information about unlocking BL
first off... do not proceed with bl unlock until you backup your TA partition cuz u might brick ur phone after the unlock is done if something goes wrong!
is it's not really recommended... u can still root it with a locked bl and enjoy ROOT privileges... FYI, unlocking bl will erase DRM keys and might affect on ur TA partition too.... so keep in mind that Bravia Engine2 along with Track ID will stop working after unlocking ur BL
TA Partition backup

so take it on ur own risk as im advising you not going for it!
good luck

Didn't work, gave up on unlocking bootloader.. Maybe I will give it a shot someday I did back up my TA partition just in case something goes wrong
Just rooted it, installed dualrecovery and flashed a locked bootloader ROM.
It's working just fine. I'm using this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2503670

[Q] Howto gain root with Linux?

Hi,
I'm looking forward to getting my Z1 tomorrow, and being used to having root on my device (ever since I jailbroke my iPhone 3GS) I'd like to get it here as well.
After a bit of reading I got the impression it's rather difficult compared to my previous phone - at least when I'm not having access to a windows computer.
So far I found that Flashtool will be able to unlock my bootloader - but will that be enough to flash SuperSU.zip in order to gain root?
Or is there some other way I overlooked so far? Please help an Xperia noob to make the first steps safely
I appreciate all advice, links, ...
Unlocking your bootloader alone then thats a no,
next you need to flash a custom kernel that contains a recovery
(sony xperias dont have a recovery partition)
once that is done use the recovery menu to flash a superuser or superSu zip
then you are rooted,
take note that custom kernels can only be flashed with a unlocked bootloader (UBL For short)
and also note that there are tools to root but depend on exploits and firmware version
This method of rooting is garenteed because this method doesnt depend on fw version or avaliblw exploits
some misc info
Flashable zips simply execute a script when flashed (often copying files (superuser or supersu copy the app and the SU binary to your system)
yes you need flashtool (not Emma not from sony either)
if you want me to guide you through then just reply

Hi,
great to hear, and thank you for that warm welcome to help me become familiar with the device
OK, so Flashtool needs to detect the device, then I can use it to unlock the device. I noticed DooMkernel to be rather extensive in its features, so I think I'll give that one a go.
Does unlocking the bootloader void guarantee? Or flashing a custom kernel or ROM?
What the heck is Emma?

Yes any sort of modifying will void your garentee or warrenty
and yes
download flashtool (i think links can be found on Doomlords posts)
plug in your Device
click on Bootloader unlock
and folow what it tells you
(to get your iemi code you can type *#06#* in the dialer or go to settings then about then status (it may be there)
and emma is Sony's useless flashtool (to me and you)
(you want the flashtool devloped by bin4ry , doomlord and someone else (cant spell their name)
also side note
i recomend DoomKernel,
DoomLord is a master in Xperia Devices and is very good at coding, his kernels are allways the safest to run
also some other notes make sure his kernel fw version is the same as on your z1 and also make sure that the drivers are installed for your z1
googling can help you here

Just note that doing it this way will lose your TApartition and drm keys. Have a read about these then decide if this is the route you want to take.

thanks for posting
i knew i was forgetting something
For OP
notes:
TA partition contains DRM keys
bravia engine and x-reality depend on your (unique) drm keys
also if your not on 4.3 it will break your camera (if you unlock your bootloader)
you can relock and restore your drm keys if you back them up
