Branded phone bootloader question

Hi, I've looked around but not been able to find anything that really answers this question.
I'm tempted to buy an Xperia Z when they come out in the UK. Unfortunately it will be a branded phone (there is no way around this unless I want to pay alot more money).
My question is for 3UK customers with an Xperia T. Are you able to unlock your bootloader using Sony's official method? I have read that simlocked branded phones can be nearly impossible to unlock on certain networks.

Not true.
I have a branded vodafone T and I can unlock. I would suggest you speak to 3UK and ask them, and if they cant answer your question take your business elsewhere.
I made sure I could unlock with vodafone before renewing my contract with them.

I have an Xperia T on 3UK, and it is very much locked. However, I have debranded it using the stock UK ftf and flashtool - and I am really quite enjoying using the Sony provided ROM.
Not sure if that helps, I suppose it depends how much you would like to muck about with your phone after receiving it!

Not sure with regard to your query about 3UK branded phones being bootloader locked however I understand that Carphone Warehouse phones are generally unlocked to any network and allow bootloader unlocking. If you were to get a phone from them on a 3UK contract then you should be ok - when I was looking for a T I popped in and queried this with them first and they suggested all of their phones are sold unlocked regardless of which network contract you choose. Phones 4 U have a similar approach but don`t offer deals on the 3 network.

Vodafone keep their phones SIM unlocked that's why you could unlock it Greg... But with carriers like 3UK they brand and SIM lock hence no CM goodness for me

Sim unlock and bootloader unlock have nothing to do with each other. You can have a sim locked phone and unlock the bootloader, and you can have a sim free phone and not be able to unlock the bootloader..and every combination in between as they are independant of each other

But fastboot locking is, or at least was in 2011 line, and unlocked by way of certificate replacement which unlocked everything, but sold as SIM unlocking causing confusion.
I think even with unlocking code from network, fastboot will remain locked.

If a carrier has made the bootloader unlockable then having the code from sony will not unlock it.
If the carier removes that restriction that allows the bootloader to be unlocked AND removes sim lock then tha is the carrier merging the two locks. They could just remove the bootloader restrictions AND keep sim lock if they want.
You can get an unlocked bootloader phone that is sim locked and vice versa. What carriers do with their locks is what they add to the phone after android and after Sony have done their thing.
They are still independant from each other unless the carrier has merged them, so my point stands, ask the carrier if you can unlock the bootloader. If the sales persone does not know what that means then go elsewhere. If they so not its not possibel because of sim lock they are lying as it is possible, its just maybe needs a bit of effort from them to be bothered. Then take your money elsewhere.
I have been into plenty of phone shops and they look confused when you ask them these questions, I just take my my business elsewhere and get what I want.

Except that with any Sony Android phone I am aware of, if the device is sold SIMlocked, it is not whitelisted in the bootloader unlock database.
While the two are technically independent, it is pretty much unheard of to see a Sony device that is sold with SIMlock but has an unlockable bootloader, and similarly, you never see devices with a non-unlockable bootloader but no SIM lock.

Hmmm it's not looking good then.
Unfortunately my device will have to be 3 branded (for reasons I'm not going to go into here).
I think I will probably contact 3 and see if they can shed any light on what to expect.
It's not the end of the world I guess, I can still put Apex on there and make it look how I want if I don't like stock. Nice to have the option though.

It would be stupid if SIMLock would be on and bootloader lock off cause u could easily remove SIMLock.
So in this case bought are related but in opposite direction - not. Cause I got SMS Code to remove SIMLock but that didnt made my bootloader unlockable.
To bad Orange is the only operator in my country which locks bootloader in Sony devices. (wish I'd knew that before signing contract)

Not sure about that. I have never heard any posts claiming that unlocking the bootloader makes it easy to simunlock. Could share with us how that is possible?

If u have unlocked bootloader u can use fastboot and also u r able to load any software u like. So its easy to remove simlock.

I can confirm that the 3UK Xperia T is bootloader locked (no fastboot). I rang up Three and they said that it is not possible to allow bootloader unlocking on it (gave me a bull**** excuse about warranties and such, and I explained how I am aware than bootloader unlocking voids the warranty and that is the same for all phones).
However I do suspect that it depends on who you speak to as to what answer you'll get.

I spoke to 3 today both customer service and in store technical adviser, they told me that they are unable to unlock the boot loader and I need to talk to Sony directly and ask them for instructions on how to unlock the boot loader.
I have sent them an e-mail and waiting for their response. Will update as soon as I have a news.

Why dont you just follow the instructions from their website......?
If your device says Bootloader unlock allowed: No Then they will not do it,
If it says Bootloader unlock allowed: yes then they will just direct you to their website to follow the instructions to do it...

Anyway, I picked one of these up at the weekend and I'm very happy with it, but I'd like to try the new roms that are starting to appear. Unfortunately, I'm not able to unlock my bootloader (Bootloader unlock allowed: No). This is on Three UK.
Is there ever likely to be a workaround for this?

I have the same thing on mine (T-mobile Croatia), I reckon it's a network carrier lock.
But if I have faith in something, then it's in XDA, the place where people turn "you can't do that" into "you can, it's just that no one found a way for it YET"
Let us be patient and see what will happen.

That's why I got my phone from a third party (CPW/P4U/etc) they nearly always supply generic handsets that are unlocked and bloat free.

Yup. Always purchase unlocked devices. NEVER count on a manufacturer's locking mechanisms being broken, nor on the lock mechanism returning somehow. (Qualcomm's secure boot infrastructure is quite strong, so it's rare for it to be compromised unless the OEM handset manufacturer screws up. Since the T's locking was never defeated, I wouldn't hold much hope for the Z.)
Vote with your wallet - don't buy a device unless it's unlocked. If you buy a locked-down device and rely on "unsupported" locking mechanisms, you are implicitly saying that you are OK with locked-down devices.

Branded and/or sim locked Sonys are usually not unlockable. This is documented well enough.
As Entropy said, either buy generic devices from the open market which come slim and neat to begin with or go with an operator which doesn't sim lock or brand devices sold by it.
I can recommend mine, sells devices subsidized if you wish yet still unlockable and the only branding to be found are a different SI than "generic", so I only suffer from delayed updates and nothing else

I bought a outright supposedly unlocked Xperia TX for a Sony Central store in Sydney then only to find out it was actually vodafone stock with a locked bootloader.

Hi, can some one help me out here.
I have a XZ which has unlockable bootloader. I have unlocked it and rooted and installed recovery kernal and Xperia Z Revolution rom. All ok.
Now, was just seeing if I ever needed to send phone off for repairs.
So downloaded the lastest flashtool and was successful enough to restore back to the 10.1.A.1.350 Original Sony Unbranded UK Rom.
With flashtool you can now lock the bootloader, so I went ahead and did this but now when checking the bootloader status, it says "Rooting Status: Unknown" and when entering my unlock code in CMD "Failed <remote: Command did not succeed>
How do I fix this so I can unlock the bootloader again?

I don't think your locked. You probably are still unlocked as we cannot relock bootloader yet

Hi all.
First of all let me explain myself, I am a noob but not a total idiot so I am where I am through rational consideration.
I have renewed my contract on three UK, which has just expired. The number one consideration for me is that I have full, unlimited access to the internet with tethering and the only option for this in the UK is on three, on the contract I was already on. Three have an excellent 3g network and are in the process of giving DC-HSPA access and will get LTE-4g before the end of the year. I am guaranteed to automatically get the higher speeds when they are available, still with unlimited tethering at no extra cost. No other tariff can give me all that in the UK. There are sim-only options but they are all short term and do not guarantee me the unlimited tethering I require into the future, and there is a good chance the cost of these tariffs will increase when 4g is rolled out. In short the only option was to renew my contract.
So, I have renewed my contract and got the XZ. The XZ was the only option really after seeing all the developers struggle with Samsung phones and with all the developer friendly support promised by Sony. Whatever I did with my contract I wanted the XZ and I love it.
I knew when I signed the contract that I was taking a gamble on the locked bootloader, but the best option for me was to renew my contract and if the bootloader is locked sell the phone and use the money to partially fund the buying of a bootloader unlockable XZ. I knew that I would probably have to do this and was ready for it when I got the contract. Anyway the bootloader is unlock:no, so I will be carrying out my plan and this XZ will get sold to fund the purchase of an XZ with unlockable bootloader. I am OK with all that and if I sell the XZ for even half it's current value I won't care and will have still made the most financially sensible choice. I will have to buy a phone off contract, but I will still have the tariff I want. If the phone I have had come with an unlockable bootloader I would have been a couple of hundred quid better off, but I had to have a phone on the contract anyway so whatever phone I got would have had to go to get an unlocked XZ. Even if there was a tariff which gave the same allowances I would have had to pay for the handset anyway, and it would have ended up costing more than it is anyway. There is no such tariff anyway and I have made the sensible choice and am happy.
Now on to my question. Obviously I am working up to selling this phone, and figure it will be easier to sell sim-unlocked. Fortunately I live in the UK and network providers are obliged to allow you to unlock your sim. On three I have to wait thirty days and then they will unlock the sim for me. I have decided that the thirty days older the phone is will be offset by it being unlocked and being easier to sell. I am not in a rush to flash roms yet so I get the phone for a while and sell it for the least effort, hopefully when CM is pretty well ready for the phone.
Anyway, all is well and good and I am content.
However there is one possibility I have only recently considered. I am aware that sim-unlocking is a completely different thing than having bootloader unlockable:yes. But I was curious to know if a byproduct of getting the Sim officially unlocked by Three would be a change to the bootloader unlocking status. I don't know enough about how all this works, and as I say, I understand there is a difference between getting the sim-unlocked and the bootloader thing. But might the bootloader lock be somehow dependant on the sim-unlock status. ????
I only ask this out of curiosity.
I will find out for myself soon enough as I will be getting the sim unlocked ready to sell anyway. It will save me a bit of money and a bit of hassle if the bootloader becomes unlockable and I won't have to part with a phone I have become attached to and know is a good one, it doesn't have any of the issues some people seem to be having with their XZ's.
Either way in a couple of weeks I will have an XZ with an unlockable bootloader as CM has become a must for me.

Hi, I'm from Mexico and bought a Z1 in Telcel plan (the original model was 6906) I have about 4 years using phone android, I wanted the HTC One but take long time to get here to Mexico, so desperate and buy me this Z1 and I'm really disappointed as I do not understand why some models like mine can not unlock the bootloader, because among other things I can not flash any custom room, or having a good kernel tweaks. (I really love Carbon room) All this regardless of the phone too easily scratched screen, and failures of touch sensitivity on the right edge, I guess be for the location of the buttons.

Because your phone is on Contract and they locked the Sim and Bootloader for security. One day when the contract expire or your phone get old you will be able to unlock sim but no bootloader. It's a deal made between your Carrier Network and Sony. If you buy a Unbranded and Sim Unlocked Z1 you don't have this problems.

That is not true !
Stop leading people the wrong way !
I bought my Z1 branded and sim-locked and i was allowed / able to unlock my bootloader. So, what you said has nothing to do with reality. And by the way ... could you tell us how you got that information?

It is in that way but no all the Carrers Applay that method. Just google it. This argue was mention 100 times on XDA too.

Why some Z1 models can not unlock the bootloader?
Thanks, there are many topics dealing with this but there is no a clear answer, I already flash one room unbranded but 6903 because as I said the original model was 6906 so I have unlocked the sim, I read out there on xda that taking it to sony service, as has unlocked the sim, they can change unlocking bootloader allowed: NO by Yes.
I'll try this way.

Telcel decided they wanted to keep the bootloader locked, thus C9606 will be permanently closed.
There are ways around this, but it WILL void warranty.

Unlocking Bootloader will avoid warranty in any case, Yes or No, buy actually the Developers on XDA they saying is no way around and you can't unlock if the Bootloader Unlocking Allowed is set up to NO. So when you buy a phone from a any Carrier make sure the Bootloader Unlocking Allowed is set up to Yes.

Here in mexico punish us with prices, sony officially sold the Z1, at $ 1000 usd (no brand) With a 2-year contract I could get $ 350 usd in telcel. Besides, very few models get really good, slow to arrive and bring an outdated firmware. Google does not sell their phones officially. But I want to unlock the bootloader because I am almost certain now that the bugs are resolved that brings z1, soon going to release a firmware google edition for z1 (I really wish it) and I need to unlock the bootloader to install.

Check your bootloader, just write *#*#7378423#*#* and go to Service Info > Configuration > Rooting Status if there is Bootloader Unlock Allowed: NO probably you can't unlock your bootloader. Call Sony Center and ask if this is possible but no guarantee about that.

Are you positive about this?
I was under the impression you could get around the locked bootloader even if the device says No.
I'm not sure if I even want to try because I would permanently lose the Bravia Engine should I succeed. I'm not sure what it's supposed to do, but it sounds nice.

sim lock and bootloader locked are depends on your carrier, there are carriers that they have locked the sim only and still allows bootloader unlocked.
but some carriers locked both. you can get a phone which allows to unlocked bootloader, if you buy a free sim phone or bought not in the carrier contract but from other store like sony store or any store that sells free sim phone.
please dont make things complicated.

With Unlocking Bootloader you will lose X-Reality, which is not a big deal anyway because it not improve the images, and Bionz processing but actually this not influence the functionality of the camera at all. No body said about Bravia Engine, I hope not.

I just wondered if anyone had gotten any news from Sony as to if the bootloader on a not allowed model van be unlocked in anyway?
I'm aware that threads exist and ppl are flashing roms on handsets with locked bootloader but I think those are allowed to unlock theirs.
Is there still no way to unlock bootloader on disallowed models either officially or unofficial?
I want custom rom

Just to add a little clarity to this, gregbradley helped me a lot with this.
If you've bought the phone from a carrier then there is a distinct chance that the bootloader unlockable status will be a flat no.
What does this mean?
This means that you will never (unless someone cracks it, highly unlikely) be able to unlock your bootloader.
If you bought your phone from certain carriers (like 3 in the UK, or so i'm told) or from third parties like carphone warehouse in the UK, then you WILL be able to unlock the bootloader, as the status for unlocking the bootloader will read "Yes".
If you see a yes then youre in luck, if it reads no then you most certainly will not be able to unlock the bootloader.
Further to this, Sony will not help you with this whatsoever, I have asked and asked and got little more than a scripted response, they WILL NOT help you to unlock your bootloader.
The sim being locked to a particular network means nothing to the bootloader, it's simply a coincidence that third parties who have bootloader unlockable phones are too sim free.
Hope this clears things up for people who weren't sure.
AFAIK, it is at the carriers request that the bootloader is in this state, not Sony's, probably why they won't help with it, but that's a guess.

You can still have all the goodness of custom roms m8, you just won't be able to flash kernels like doom kernel and or AOSP rom's and CM10 based roms.
In all fairness, youre not missing out on too much, but I was the same when i had a locked phone, the grass always appears to be greener on the other side until you realise it's actually not.

[Q] How to unlock tmobile Z1s

I just recently bought a z1s coming from an s3. so far i love how smooth and fast the phone is. The camera quality is pretty bad however but thats beside the point. I need to unlock my phone does anyone know how i can do this? i heard the bootloader is locked or something, does that affect the phone being able to be unlocked? any help would be appreciated thank you

What I know your phone is Locked and it cannot be Unlocked, there is no workaround, thanks to TMO. You will still get Root anyway so is not so bad.

but ive seen ebay sellers selling Z1s factory unlocked. So theres got to be a way, tommoro ill call tmobile and see whats up i just dont know what to say

It will unlock with an unlock code. You can get that from T-Mobile. If you bought the phone outright, you can get the code from them. If upgraded, then you can wait 90 days... Or, 40 days, I've heard both. I don't know if those third party websites can unlock it with the code. Yes, the bootloader is locked, but with the released kernel source, we will have root once someone can figure it out.
Coming from the S3 like you, I know of that hidden menu that allows you to SIM unlock Samsung phones, from my research I've done, I don't think Sony phones have that. It needs a direct code.

Lets clarified, your phone can be SIM unlocked, No Booloader Unlocked, this are 2 different things.

i just looked at the tmo sim unlock requirements. I need to pay the phone off fully and have had it for 40 days before requesting an unlock code.
this site however says i can purchase an unlock code for the Z1s, has anyone used it before? Im scared of giving away my IMEI but idk if theres any risks involved with that

i do know the difference and sadly, it still says: "Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes"
follows the line, my sxs (t-mobile) was unlockable also

I bought the unlock code for my Z1s online, different seller but worked none the less. Took about 4 days turnaround on the code, Sony unlock codes seem to take longer to generate than other manufacturers. Many of us have been buying unlock codes online for some years now, I've never heard of any IMEI related issues.

tbh i think im just gonna return this and get the LG G2. do you guys know how i could avoid paying the restock fee?

I work for TMo and can tell you that the official policy is that the restocking fee is only waived for defective devices, and then only if it's being exchanged for the same model. That being said, it's often left to the rep's/manager's discretion and some may waive it for you. I often waive it for people just to be nice, but it really just depends on who you go to and how strictly they are adhering to T-Mobile policy.

i ended up being charged the waving fee, oh well. Im in LOVE with the G2. I had the G2x back when it was out and im blown away at how far LG has come.

When is android 5 (lollipop) launching for xperia z?

I believe sony said February would be the launch month for it unless I'm mistaken, i know it's not quite the end of February but is sony really going to be Mr last second and launch like at February 28 11:59pm?

You think that Sony would launch the updates at separate times?
Usually a update is "simulaunched" and would launched all at once

I think i read some time ago that Sony pushed their Z3 and Z2 update to March.
Either way, Z1 will get it later, and Z even later than that. I believe IF we get it by summer its gonna be really cool.
but i kinda wish we dont get it so soon, at least not before Google fixes the damn MEMORY LEAK problem. Kitkat is still more stable than L right now...

Maybe I'd rather pay the 100$ and unlock bootloader...

Z will get lolipop after z3,z2,z1 etc...

**Oftopic** why would you pay $100 to unlock the bootloader?

Because every other Sony phone I've ever owned I always have to unlock the bootloader and I don't think it's very fair that T Mobile says that I can unlock my bootloader just because said I can't, oh and by the way when I say unlock bootloader I mean by a new motherboard, I had no idea that you can't unlock the bootloader by normal means on T Mobile's Xperia Z if I would have known this I would have never brought the T Mobile version

I have my C6603 (Xperia Z) from T-mobile. I had locked bootloader (Bootloader unlocked allowed : no). I asked T-mobile the SIM unlock key as my contract ended, and asked Sony Customer service here in Croatia if there is any possibility to be able to unlock the bootloader. They said to contact they offical service center in Croatia. I contacted them, and they did there magich and now i am able to unlock my bootloader (running cm12) and it didnt cost me anything

I would be not suprised if the Z4 is released before Z get 5.0 (a 5.0 already outdated)

Impossible, they said that a carrier branded xperia z bootloader is 100% fort Knox! Cannot be unlocked

I am an living proof than it is possible. also tought that it's not possible but they did it and it's 100%
Just think about it, they had to lock if, and if they lock it there has to be a way to unlock it

My my, if so you should definitely share your process here on xda because all the other devs said it's impossible. But I refuse to believe it's impossible.

I told you... I also tought that it's impossible and my last optio is to sell my xperia z and buy unlocked one... Than i made my mind and send an e-mail to Sony customer service... That didint told me **** and they said that it's immpossible and bla bla bla. Than i found Sony Cro. facebook page, asked them if they could help me. Really nice people and they said that "Agram servis" is offical mobile service center for all cariers in Croatia, and that i should talk to them.
Ok, i send them an e-mail nad asked if there is a way to unlocked my bootloader, because my phone is no longer on contract, i had the sim unlock key from my carrier. And a reply came, they told me that they can't unlock my bootloader they can only make my bootloader unlockable (Woohooo, that mean's to change "Bootloader unlock allowed: no to yes)... and that i have to send them the Device, the receipt, IMEI, and SIM unlock key. I send them the device. ANd got it back from them in 2 day and voila, Bootloader unlock allowed YES ...

Hmmmm ok thanks.but it's a bit scary sending out my phone to anywhere. And I use it everyday, i also have no receipt as I brought it from eBay..but I'll investigate and maybe give it a try.:thumbup:

You should contact offical Sony service in your country (the receipt is not that immportant)... I had to send them device beacuse by mail beacause i am from different town

....i dont have sim unlock.. how do i get that done first? ive already debranded my phone, it think its a C6603 and on KK when its really a C6606 with a C6603_10.5.1.A.0.283_Generic CE.ftf. does that help me in any way?
