I'm sure I'm setting myself up here, but what advantages are there to the custom ROMs at this point?
I'm running stock Froyo 2.2 (I did update the radio to 5.08, though), stock bootloader, and I'm not rooted. I'm on T-Mobile in the Tampa, FL area.
I'm not sure if it's a coincidence, or just because most people that are posting on XDA are running custom ROMs, but I don't really have ANY of the problems most people on here have. My battery life is great, and the phone is overall VERY stable. I've tried other launchers, themes, etc., but I always prefer the stability of the stock setup over aesthetics.
The few issues I have had I can attribute to poorly written apps (force closes, battery vampires), or known hardware problems (mediocre 3G connectivity at times, etc).
I can understand if you have a phone like the MyTouch that never got any official updates after 1.6, or you want to try the next leaked software on your phone. But the Nexus One has had tons of official support and updates up to this point. Before Froyo was officially released, I found myself better off with stock recovery to load the latest, greatest Froyo build.
Sorry for the rambling, but I would greatly appreciate any education I can get on what's packed into these custom ROMs that everyone gets so excited about.

Don't really feel like typing all the reasons haha, but there's a lot of stuff to enjoy with custom roms. If stock works for you that's great. I don't know anyone that's ever gone custom and wanted to go back but I'm sure it happens. End of the day it's whatever makes you happy. A lot of us want more than just a great experience, we want to see what's possible. 1. More control over the appearance of the OS. Get rid of that ugly white notification bar and replace it with a sexy black one, for example.
2. Removing the stock apps from the phone that you don't use or want. Why have them sitting there taking up space and potentially resources for no reason? Sure they don't take up much in terms of storage space, but if you use a lot of apps, every little bit counts.
3. Undervolting and over/underclocking. Get that extra little performance boost, or cut it back. When I was UV'd to 800mV and UC'd to 806mhz, I noticed no performance difference or problems (note: I don't play 3d games on my phone) and my battery life was insane. 24 hours of normal use would put me to 65% give or take.
4. Relating to number one, more control over other things. I've ripped stock, but customized, apps from random ROMs and pushed them to my phone. Black Facebook & Twitter widgets (white ones are ugly), darkened (black & dark grey) stock messaging interface with white text, etc.
5. Trackball Alert Pro.
I'm sure that others can add more, but the above are the main reasons I rooted mine.
A tiny little thing called Apps2SD+, for example.
Multiple audio/video decoder support.
Lots of Linux binaries bundled.
Lots of modifications to stock software (contacts, browser) that increase their usefulness (for example, do you really like to type "about:debug" each time you want to change browser client after reboot?).
etc etc.

The underclocking sounds interesting. I don't play any games on my phone, and extra battery life is always nice.
I'm not too interested in customizing the appearance too much. Coming from an iPhone, I'm pretty happy with the looks of the stock Froyo UI compared to that.

If I install a custom ROM, when a new one comes out, do I have to install the ROM from the start and I loose my setings etc. or do I just update it?
Depends on the ROM maker. Most make their ROMs backwards-compatible, so you can upgrade. Going between different makers' ROMs you mostly need to wipe and start fresh (though there are apps that can back up and restore pretty much everything).
I am thinking to try Cyanogenmod ROM, bot I don't wan't to cofigurate all the things when a new ROM comes out.
hi, I heard a lot of good stuff about CM 6.0, so I was wondering how I should begin to upgrade. I have bricked a g1 before, so I am afraid to do any more flashing without specific directions.
I have two micro sd cards,a 1gb(class2) and 8gb(class6). The 8gb card has apps from apps2sd and an ext partition, so I was wondering if I can just flash the rom with the 1 gb card and just put in the 8 gb card with no problems? I do not really mind if my call logs/texts do not get backed up as long as my apps work.

Very good step by step and you can download ROMS from there also.
As far as your SD cards I'd stick with the 8GB. (1) It's faster, (2) according to instructions you have to re-format so you have a swap partition-96MB, ext2-512MB and the rest fat32. Not sure that flashing with the 1GB and then switching to the 8GB would work--anyone ?
The ROM is very cool but I've noticed a couple glitches, maybe it's just me.
Market takes forever on 3G or wifi. It works, just no where near as fast as it seemed to on 1.6.
Now this problem is making me try other ROMS.
Example: I have Weather and toggle widgets app that I loaded and then place the widget so I have my nice clock but seems every time I reboot, for whatever reason, the widget won't reload, and if I try to re-install from the widget list it's not there. The app is still on the phone, but no access to the widget.
This is not the only app this has happened with. Possibly older apps with newer ROM issue. I checked the compatibility button in settings but no change.
I'm far from an expert, just a heads up.
Other than these couple things, killer ROM.
Technically these aren't tagged as stable ROMS but I'm having fun playing with all of them.

Thanks for the reply, I already went ahead and flashed CM 6.0RC2, the only problem I noticed is the lag when going to home from an app (camera, facebook, etc) and sometimes the phone would mute and I would have to reboot to fix it (Very annoying, but will stick with it for now)

Just a suggestion : maybe try this one : Htcclay's Superfly G1 d/s v1.1 - Froyo 2.2. Has ROM Manager on it with Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Battery life is very good, 3hrs @ 65% with heavy use, and the memory is absolutely the best. Still have 68MB open on internal memory. Most apps on SD. gmail app is changed, for the better, couple new options. The one and only pain is market, which is also a bit slow on this one. I'll live with it.
No glitches, no mystery reboots and widgets are staying put. Seems very very stable. Evidently you haven't had the couple small issues I had. I've tried 5 different ROMS today and slight issues with all but this one is really, really good.
Think I found the Rom I'm sticking with.
Gotta give props to cyanogen and all the xda folks for all the development, recommendations, and suggestions.
G1 has been sitting for months and I finally got the nerve to flash. Glad I did it, got a new phone and can't put it down.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that rom as soon as I have time. If I have apps backed up on my SD, I wouldn't have to change anything right?

As far as I know. I have 767 backup apps on my SD card right now. Tell ya what. Been playing with this all day and observed a few things.
Get yourself - atrack dog (SD) backup, run it, takes a few minutes depending on how many apps, it'll list every backup app ya got on SD, "with" the "icons" showing. Either install apps you want from your SD or do new version tracking and see what you can upgrade. Also apps on internal storage are listed at the end of the SD list so no need to get the regular atrack dog.
Can you imagine trying to figure out which app is which with a file explorer just by the brief description ? After install atrack takes you right back to where you left off, unlike installing through file explorers. So much easier this way.
One thing though, things like weather apps, clocks and such, put on your internal memory, (starts with approx 89MB with this ROM), found that the slight delay running apps from SD screws **** up. I still have approx 65MB internal memory left, ball park 200 apps installed.
With this ROM after rebooting, give it a few extra minutes to boot completely. Apps on SD take a little to load their icons, I assume because of the delay loading from the SD card, or you'll end up with the same generic icon for all of them.
Once up and running though your good.

I flashed the rom and I enjoy it, is there any way to change the theme and icons though? I enjoyed the Cyanogen icons a lot

Just "google" froyo themes and there's a bunch. Search Icons or widgets in Market and a big list will pop up for ya.
That background pic on the home screen wasn't one I would've picked so I just changed it.
Development dropped in favor of Liberation.
Only difference between Nothing Special 1.3 and Liberation 1.0 is that Google Car Home has been replaced by the stock HTC Car Panel. This is to remove "holes" left by the removal of a stock app. Also, this no longer conflicts with my intent of having a stock ROM minus carrier bloat/restrictions. Google Car Home can be added by the user if they so choose.

A few.
Apply this ROM is faster than using the RUU, re-rooting, and then manually deleting the programs you want. On the plus side, the slower method lets you delete any program YOU want, rather than being a one-size fits all type deal.
I'm using a memory/task killing teak offered by the Android Kitchen that is a bit more aggressive in memory conservation. This should give a slight performance boost over the RUU.
So really, it's more of a convenience than using the RUU. Many people who flash ROMs don't even know how to remove programs via ADB.
what kind of feed back are you looking for, there is more bloat but that is kinda user preference I remove almost everything and leave just the apps, kinda like the magnoila desenseitize but i do it manually bucause that wont flash for me on the stock rom
so far so good, can you post the list of addons i see carhome which is a good move

Just wanted to make sure that I didn't screw anything up. Everyone has a different definition of "bloat." I decided to leave whatever HTC/Google apps came with the phone, and removed Verizon's additional bloat. Removing HTC's apps and cause minor stability issues that the casual user won't want to deal with. Those who know how to manually remove the apps tend to know how to deal with the minor issues that crop up.

I had Car Home listed under removed apps as the replacement for HTC Car Panel. I've copied it under features as well as per your suggestion. Otherwise, that's pretty much it.
If you want to further remove apps, a very simple way to do so is to unzip the package, delete the APKs under /system/app that you don't want, re-zip using a program like 7-ZIP (free), then flash it.
You can also do this to package ring tones in the /system/media folder so that they are stored in /system, don't take up user space, and will work correctly even when the device is USB mounted or just booting up.

I don't use ROM Manager, so I couldn't tell you how to use it in that way. I just download and flash via Clockwork Recovery.
i have used clockwork and rom manager both work just fine
how do you feel about removing the HTCSetupWizzard.apk I find it to be bothersome when i have install a new rom and that pops up. I am not tring to be a jerk just throwing things out there. its your rom

You're absolutely not being a jerk. Like I said, no ROM will make everyone happy. Any user is free to modify the zip and delete the APKs (and corresponding odex files) from the /system/app folder prior to flashing.
HTCSetupWizard only pops up when data is wiped. On the "stable" release, if you just do a flash over, (same on any future upgrades) it won't pop up.

Deleting VZW backup assistant causes a "hole" in HTC's setup wizard. The point of this ROM was to maintain the user experience while deleting unused bloat. Also, this ROM pre-dates both Google's backup option as well as HTC's Sense.com option, so VZWBackup is a decent free alternative.
The 3G Hotspot option isn't made by Verizon, it's an HTC app (it's the same app on their unlocked phones). Some people, for whatever reason, will pay for tethering. They need this app to do so and it's not replaceable via the Android/VCAST markets. Also, there's a way to use this app to tether for free, essentially disabling the aspect that reports to Verizon. However, due to questionably legality, I can't detail how that works here.
However, I see your points, and I'll look at it more when I get back from my business trip.
Looking for a good "stock" ROM to replace Virtuous which seems to have been abandoned.
Any first hand experiences with this ROM? I'm starting to think the silence is a good thing (no problems).
I run it with Lou's #8 and it's running absolutely flawlessly. No complaints.

Installed this last night and so far it has been awesome! Very Snappy too.
Titanium seems to be broken, telling me it doesn't have root/BusyBox (even though I granted it root permissions), but I don't think it's the ROM since everything else that uses root works (Root explorer, ROM Manager, etc). Not a big deal since I can just use AppBrain, although a little more work involved there.
This is just what I was hoping for! Thanks.

At the bottom of titanium click "Problems?" And it will fix that problem by downloading busybox. Hope it helps.

all good no problems, when do you consider it stable? Not sure you could do anything else to it with out loosing the stock start over feel.
THis is just what i've been looking for, im not too crazy for those roms with 5h!tty mods and ugly colors, just wanted a stock without the bload, just google and HTC stuff and this one seems to offer that.
So nothing got broken in the process of removing the bloat right? will work just like the stock minus the bloat?
Would LOVE to get a ROM like this but with Sense 2.0 in it, now that would be awesome!

I've my G1 about 6 months ago with the CyanogenMod-6.1.0-DS Android 2.2.1, and i'm not very happy with the battery life and the multiable crashes that I receive with some of the apps, and the lagging in the transition between programs.
Can someone suggest a better rom? I keep hearing that it's best to stick with Android 1.6. Is this true?
I'm not much into themes, matter of fact the slimmer, the better... I want to save all the resources for my apps, then I do for the look of it.
I just think with the more they throw into these roms the worse it makes the phone. Why do they (rom creators) add more such as apps that don't benfit anyone?
Just give me a plain Jane that will make my phone run more faster.

Hello all very long time lurker but am here now for some help. So a few questions and description of what i wish to achieve.
I have a POS iPod touch 4th gen that I have had 2 and half years or something and really want to replace. Also have an Xperia X10 and shortly will have an LG Optimus 2X. The X10 will function for phone duties until the Xperia TX become available in Australia.
Back the the O2X though. Now turning an android phone into a Portable Media Player (PMP) is something I have been wanting to do for a while now. Naturally though this brings up a few things that will not be needed.
For the music front end I will be using Player Pro and Pics and videos will primarily be held and viewed in QuickPic.
The phone will still need to retain wifi and bluetooth capabilities, however I want to fully disable all other forms of connectivity as I will have no need of it and will not be using a sim in the phone as this will be dedicated to music, movies and pics. So does anyone know the best way gor me to go about that?
I will also have a hell of a lot of unused and unwanted apps. I would love to be able to really strip the phone back and free up as much space as possible. Now in the past I have been able to uninstall pre-installed apps from my X10. I am just unsure how to go about it on the O2X. Does anyone know how I would go about completely removing the phone, contacts, calander, stock music, stock gallery and other assorted apps?
I would also need to be using a kernel with the voodoo sound mods for the wolfson DAC. Now I was wondering if there was any recommendations there?
Finally I would also like a recommendation of the most stable ICS based ROM to go with the voodoo kernel. I would like the ROM to also include a modifiable set of notification bar widgets so I can easily turn on and of things like wifi, bluetooth, gps, airaplane mode and adjust brightness. Anyone know of anything that would fit the bill?
Must also come with a working camera app (does not need to has video recording working or panorama just basic camera duties please). Any other suggestions that you may think of feel free to post them.

Note to mods: hope I am posting in the right section, feel free to move it if I am not.
Since connectivity is already built in into the android OS, you can't disable it, but I think keeping your phone in airplane mode all the time should do the trick. Anyway, taking out the sim card already disables all connectivity that involves telecommunications.
If you want to remove system apps, you have to root your phone first. The forum already has so many guides on rooting. Then all you have to do is use any root file manager, go into system/app and delete the apps there. Not everything can be deleted though, some are crucial for the functioning of the phone.
The other way is to download a rom, open the zip and delete everything you don't need that's under system/app and install it. No guarantees that your phone will boot up though, if you happen to hit an app that is crucial for the rom to work. Then you can flash the rom and it's done.
There are many kernels that use voodoo, just find one that fits any rom of your choice.
Finally: ICS roms still have some bugs, seeing that you are going to use it as a PMP, I recommend not upgrading to ICS or later until roms made from LG's sources start popping out. I hear that CM10 (that runs on jellybean) will be released shortly after LG releases their ICS update.
Almost all roms have a camera app, no worries there!
TL;DR Install any rom you'd like that seems to fit the bill. Root your phone, open the particular rom's zip file and remove apps you don't need that are in system/app, flash it to your phone (with recovery mode of course). Flash kernel to your liking.
Looks like LG is no better than Sony when it comes to OS Updates haha
shall look at stock based Rome for now then. Try and find a JB skinned one if possible.
Then play trial and error with what apps I can remove before flashing and which I have to leave and possibly just freeze. New it was something simple but its been a while. I hope I can remove all the basic apps that make it function like a phone otherwise I guess I will make do with freezing and hiding them. Love removing all clutter possible.
Will be waiting to see if CM10 can come along much less buggy than all the CM9 and ICS ROMs that I have looked at. Silly LG hampering the development of ROMs because there isn't an official ICS update to work off and its late 2012 already. Hoping for some good news though with what I have read about SK and them getting ICS.
