[FAQ][WIP] Frequently Asked Questions- HTC Incredible S (VIVO) - HTC Incredible S

Frequently Asked Questions
HTC Incredible S
This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please only post in this thread with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.
Q1: How do I root my phone? You have two choices.
1. To downgrade and s-off using revolutionary and nonverbose's toolkit. This is harder but s-off makes flashing ROMs and Kernels easier. If you have HBOOT 1.16 or higher you need to downgrade before using revolutionary. See here
[TOOL][SCRIPT]S-off for HBOOT 1.16 and above
OR
2. Unlock using the HTC dev method, which unlocks your bootloader but you remain s-on. You have to flash boot.img via fastboot every time you change your kernel and most ROMs. See here
[Guide] Newb guide to unlocking HBOOT 1.16.0000 and 2.00+ and flashing a custom ROM
Q2: Which custom recovery should I use?The tried and tested recovery that most people use is 4EXT.
Find it here: 4EXT Recovery Classic v2.2.7 RC5 | TAR BACKUPS | Convert FS | Romname -> Backupname
4EXT is officially supported, TWRP and the latest CWM are not official.
Q3: Can I install an OTA on my rooted or bootloader unlocked phone? No. If you want to install an OTA (imo you'd be crazy to ) you must revert to stock EVERYTHING. This includes ROM, recovery, and reverting to a locked bootloader. In my opinion it is best to flash a stock-based custom ROM like Blackout ICS, tpbklake's stock rooted ROMs or Android Revolution HD to save you from the hassle of reverting to stock. It also gives you the flexibility to easily flash a custom ROM
Q4: How do I flash my boot.img in fastboot? On your computer, open the custom ROM zip using an unzip program (WinZip, WinRAR, etc.) and extract the file "boot.img" (no quotes). Place this file in the same folder as fastboot.exe..
See this video: [Tutorial] How to Fastboot Flash boot.img on S-ON HTC Device
And here: [Tutorial] How to flash a new boot.img via Fastboot
Q5: What is the difference between S-off and HTC dev unlock?Basically, s-off gives you access to everything you need as a normal user. To flash a ROM, all you have to do is wipe, flash it in recovery and reboot
With HTC Dev unlock you will remain s-on and have limited access. You cannot flash radios and other files via hboot. When you flash a ROM you must flash it in recovery and then fastboot flash the boot.img (see Q4)
Q6: Do I need to s-off or HTC dev unlock my bootloader to install a custom ROM?Yes
Otherwise you cannot have a custom recovery which you need to flash a custom ROM
Q7: What is HBOOT/bootloader and how do I enter it/what does it do?HBOOT is the white screen that displays all your phone info on it. It will show you your HBOOT version, radio version, whether you are s-off, s-on or have an unlocked bootloader.
Q8: What is ADB?Stands for Android Debugging Bridge.
Read more about it here: [GUIDE] ADB Workshop and Guide for everyone
Q9: What a nandroid backup?A nandroid backup is what is made when you go to recovery and backup. It backs up everything you see in android, including your kernel/boot, system/ROM, all your data, settings etc. If you want to create a "freezeframe" of what your phone is like, create a nandroid backup and it will be able to be restored at any time. Use the same recovery that you backed up with to restore.
Q10: My PC won't connect to the phone by USB (for RUU, fastboot, adb, etc.), what do I do?Make sure you have all the drivers needed for what you are doing.
Q11: What is the best ROM/kernel?You need to make up your mind yourself It is totally an opinion thing. Some don't like the bloat of sense and prefer AOSP ROMs. I like the Sense interface so I mostly use sense ROMs. One way to see popularity is to have a look at everyone's signatures and to see what they are running.
For stability and everyday use its better to go with a non-experimental ROM
Q12: Does rooting the phone affect my battery life, performance or coolness?Alone, rooting the device does next to nothing. After the process of rooting, a rooted stock ROM will be absolutely no different to the stock ROM unrooted. However now you have permissions to write to /system and other partitions that you could not do anything to before.
However by installing a custom ROM it can affect all of the above, including coolness
Q13: How much can I overclock my device without causing damage to it?The general consensus is that 20% more clock speed won't hamper your device. Mine has run at 1200MHz for over a year and it is fine. However over that, there is potential for damage. That said, there are many who use the phone at 1500MHz and they are fine. Just remember that all chips are different, yours might not be able to take the speed some others can get up to. Some cannot take over the 1024MHz stock, but the msm8255 is designed to run at 1400MHz.
Tip: If your device is unstable at high frequencies, try raising the voltages at those frequencies
You also need a custom kernel with OC enabled for you to raise the frequencies.

Official OTA should have it. Custom ROMs based on stock like blackout have it.
Did you go to settings--> security--> screen lock? Face unlock is an option for me in blackout.

About the overclocking, might be worth saying that some chips are unstable at slightest overclock as well...
Especially now when some people have had this phone for 2 years or so, the CPU might not like overclocking at all.

Depending on your area, signal can change from better or worse after flashing a radio. Im pretty sure it also influences GPS location/navigation and it can help increasse battery life

[Q] Interested in rooting and flashing a custom ROM for the LGOB. [Q]

Hello guys, as you can see I am new to the forum and new to android in general. [Used to be an iOS fanboy] I have recently acquired an LG Optimus Black but i'm unhappy with the stock ROM provided by LG.
I have a few questions:
1) What are my options for rooting the device?
2) Once rooted, what custom ROMs are currently available for the device?
3) If I flash a new ROM is it possible and what would I need to have/do to restore the device back to the stock ROM?
And lastly...
4) What is the chance of fully bricking the device and what are my options if the device gets bricked?
Thanks a lot, [Hope this was the right section and hasn't been asked before...]

All was asked and ANSWERED before. Move your a** and search for it.
I have searched actually. The questions that have been answered aren't specific to my situation and I know that small details are very important when flashing phones. If you aren't answering the question I guess what you posted would be considered spam?
Guys,
Please refrain from bickering, two ways this can be easily resolved:
1. Use google search with the word xda in it to find your answer
2. Rather than posting move your a** and find it, if you know the link or answer, why not help a brother out?
I will say no more on the matter, its that simple.
THanks.

No point arguing..if you don't wanna help just ignore.
If you wanna reply, make sure it helps others.
1) What options? It's either you root or you don't. Either way, your phone works.
2) Currently there's only NOVA Rom by knzo.
3) Read this thread here.
4) Chances of bricking are slim if you read before attempting anything. If in any case your phone is bricked (boot loop), refer to the above.
Hope it helps.

Exactly what I needed, thanks a lot!
I've heard a lot of the current roots don't work for the OB?
And is NOVA the ONLY ROM at the moment, I thought I heard about another one?
Older firmwares, you can use Gingerbreak. If it doesn't work, then most probably you're on the newer firmwares. Then use SuperOneClick.
The other one is Pays ROM. It's been abandoned.
It needs v10b Firmware to run. If you're not familiar, stick to Nova ROM.
Cyanogenmod is in progress (i hope so)

Here is global FAQ, when needed, for device specific things, i'll redirect to the right place, same for MiniCM's specific questions.
You will find more precise infos in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425240Lucastan96's/sgt. meow FAQ/list (only dedicated to X8/W8!)
Q1: Why ONE only FAQ for theses 3 (4) devices ?Because theses devices have really similar hardware, and work in the same way.
x8/w8 are one device (only renamed) and is MDPI.
x10mini and minipro are LDPI the PRO has an hardware keyboard that the x10mini doesn't have. Q2: Why is there many names for theses devices? There are 3 names for each devices :
The commercial, the number, and the name used by cyanogenmod:
X8/W8 is known as e15 or Shakira
X10mini is known as e10 or Robyn
X10miniPRO is known as u20 or Mimmi Q3: Where can i find my device specific help and informations? For X8/W8 : here
There is currently no similar up-to-date thread for x10mini/pro
Q4: How to root? There are many ways, one of them for X8 are using x8toolbox, or by flashtool and with superoneclick. Q5: What is a recovery?A recovery is a small system that allows you to install roms, backup, restore, and many other things.
In order to install your first rom you will need cwm.
If you unlock your bootloader and flash a custom kernel cwm recovery is included so you don't need to do anything,
if you can't unlock your bootloader (or don't want) that means you are on stock kernel and you have to install it. Some ways to do it is by x8toolbox (for X8) or manually.
You may have seen the name xrecovery, this is an old and outdated recovery. Most roms need cwm and not xrecovery, you can always check the installation instructions of the rom that you want to install. Q6: How to unlock bootloader?http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254225 Q7: How to flash a rom?Always read the installation instructions of the rom you want to flash. They might be different from a rom to another, refer to "fresh install" if want to know more. Q8: How to revive my (soft)bricked device? For X8.
For X10mini and X10miniPRO (link pending) Q9: What is the best rom/kernel/theme/etc?This is not questio should ask, backup, try and roll back Q10: Backups, what are they?Backups are something like a picture of your current state, to which you could roll back in case of install/flash/testing failure
they helps you not to lose your settings, apps,data... but may create bug if you restore /data you used with one rom after the install of one other.
More info by stamatis. Q11: What is a "fresh install" This is when you install a new rom, after having all your data/apps deleted, that means :
in ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery you did the following before installing :
formatting /cache, /data and /system
for a non-fresh install but to void some issue, you should
format /cache, /system and wipe dalvi-cache before installing a rom update (don't forget to install gapps too) Q12: What is a baseband and its number?Baseband is part of pre-software of your device, it allows you to connect to network and some other things
You can check your baseband number in settings>about phone.
In order to install a custom rom you MUST have the baseband ending with 015. If you don't have it then you can update with pccompanion, SEUS or flashtool by flashing the generic stock .ftf for 2.1 eclair. (take care you flash the correct stock rom specific to your device ) QXXX: Where can i find MiniCM range specific FAQ threads ?
Theses threads are for all the supported devices :
MiniCM7
MiniCM9
MiniCM10This FAQ will be filled up more later

i would agree with you, but in fact his thread (and my MiniCM miniFAQs too) is extremely detailed, and hard to read for people that don't know the device or is new to the forum,
the aim of this (and all others) RC-FAQ is to be short, redirecting to where further infos are, and to be standard and looking like any other RC-FAQ for easy reading:

The whole idea of consistency is that we are giving out the information in a similar way and users can expect same standards across.
Many of us keep changing phones, and users will know where to find answers if they know that the FAQs follow the same format..

editing an existing FAQ to get it in the "new recommended way" is really hard, and setting up a new one is easier
this new FAQ should look like these :
galaxy mini
Xperia play
...
Cool. So let's try this.
You keep the FAQ short, while I keep mine a bit more detailed.
Users can ask questions in my thread or yours.
Your opinion on this will be appreciated.

right,
i'll write at top of the post to refer to your FAQ for more precises info, this one is not meant to be precise, just to guide users
users should better ask in your FAQ for general Q, or in the MiniCM dedicated FAQs (for Q related to theses roms)
this FAQ is not a place for people to ask (in the way the RC-FAQs have been imagined)
the aim was to create a short RC-FAQ, and that each dev make one dedicated to their own roms
I will give you some suggestions, of course my post is not a guide, i leave the writing part to you, if you want me to write full answers though im willing to do it, but i guess you want the faq to have your personal touch.

Why did you add the answers exactly from my post?
You can add this as well.I think a good place is below the "How to root".
What about recovery?

If you unlock your bootloader and flash a custom kernel cwm recovery is included so you dont need to do anything, if you can't unlock your bootloader that means you are on stock kernel and you have to install it. Some ways to do it is by x8toolbox, manualy, by flashtool(?), by the app(?) (im not 100% sure about the last two as i have never used them but i think some users have reffered that they work)

[HELP THREAD] Xperia Z | Ask any question | Noob friendly

Xperia Z Help ThreadHello everyone, welcome!
Back when I had a HTC Sensation, we had a great help thread for all device/software related questions and I decided to do the same thing for the Xperia Z.
A big thanks to @undercover for his original idea & to @malybru for his thread format!
General Info
First things first. I strongly advise you to read THIS thread before posting ANYTHING on XDA. Particularly the part about SEARCHING.
Then, have a quick look at the links in post #2 in this thread. You might find what you need right away.
Lastly, even if you do get your question answered, please do come back and read the links in post #2 to educate yourself.
You'll be surprised how much time and frustration it will save you in the future. You might even be able to help others with your new-found knowledge.
If you are able to answer questions, go ahead, contribute by answering questions posted in the thread.
When you post a question, try to include details of your device version, ROM, etc.
It's always a good idea to have these details in your signature, for this, take a look here.
ASK ANY QUESTION HERE, adb, drivers, flashtool, etc. You will either get an answer or will get pointed in the right direction.
No abuse towards noobs is tolerated in this thread!
Please be nice!

EDIT: Done!
I'm after some help with my CPU settings. I'm running stock android 4.1.2 on a C6603. Build is 253.
I've got Rom Toolbox Lite and it has settings to tweak the kernel and CPU settings. I'm after some help as to what settings are the best when I want a decent combination of speed (I'm heavy on the ole Internet and gaming) and lasting battery life.
Any help or links would be much appreciated.
I am rooted but a noob at messing around with it.

To be honest, I have never used ROM Toolbox.
Infact for such apps, most "tweaks" give you a negligible performance benefit.
The only way to truly get a performance benefit is to play around with settings till you reach an optimum.
If you are truly after good kernel tweaks, take a look at Trickster Mod.
For battery savings, I recommend the use of Greenify.

If you are coming from an AMOLED display, then you might find that the Z's display is a bit under saturated.
But actually, the display is quite precise. There is nothing "wrong" with it.
All problems with viewing angles were solved in the subsequent updates.

You're welcome
First, I want to thank you for bringing this to the Sony Xperia Z forum as this would help alot of new and old XDA members. Its an great idea the QnA section is indeed a mess and I do understand that most moderators are busy with other things as well, this would definitely save them alot of time.
Second, You've got my support
mirroring
I can not mirror my Xperia Z with my LG TV, I recently installed the cyanogenmod and mirroring worked, but with the stock roms, does not work, can someone help?
I've recently rooted my Z with Doomlord's Easy rooting toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327472). The root was successful and I had verified root access. But whenever I try to change system files like adding boot animation, editing fonts or even just simply change system files to RW, my phone will automatically force reboot itself. Please help!!!
Firmware:10.1.1A.1.253
Model:C6603

I'm using .423 but already tried with .434 and .253, but it's the same thing, I seek the tv, he thinks, and then the time to connect, it just disconnects before the image appears on TV, the strange thing is that in cyanogem worked perfectly.
Hi, since .423 update I got problem with background data. Restricting it for a period of time then removing it by tapping from notification or setting doesn't really remove the restrictions. Accessing play store gets pop up notification to enabled background data. Problem solved by reboot. Anyone experience this and know how to fix this? Thanks in advance. Sorry for bad english.

Still in Bootloop after days of searching for answers

I've been trying to fix this for the last week. I tried to boot the SWITCH ROM to use google edition and sense. I'm stuck in Bootloop.
I've looked through a lot of threads, with no luck.
Phone boots up
I only get a black screen with the notification bar. Can't do anything with that.
I can access bootloader.
Re-flashing a ROM hasn't worked.
Wiping data/cache/delvik hasn't helped
The all-in-tool doesn't work. I have to type in all the commands myself.
Has anyone fixed their One from a bootloop, or know how to get it back to stock 1.31?
Thanks in advance.

First things first hopefully you read this reply better than you read the post about Switch Rom
About MoDaCo.SWITCH
MoDaCo.SWITCH is a unique ROM concept for the HTC One which allows you to have two ROMs on your device (Sense and Google Play Edition) but maintaining a single set of data that is shared between the two.
Switch has been in development for a while now and it is rather complex internally, so we will have a number of Beta phases where we are certain to find (and hopefully fix) any issues.
Pre-requisites
Switch is tested on a European WWE unlocked HTC One that was originally running the 2.24 ROM. S-OFF is recommended but not mandatory. S-OFF can be achieved using the revone utility.
NOTE: This ROM is for GSM devices only.

Thanks for the reply. I did not read through the SWITCH thread in great detail, which is of course on me. I will try this later when I have time. If it works, I'll spread the word to others.

Frequently Asked Questions - HTC One-M8-Sprint(m8_whl)

Frequently Asked Questions
HTC One (M8)-Sprint(m8_whl)
This a short list of frequently asked questions in this device forum and the answers often given as a response. It should serve as a starting point for gathering knowledge and finding solutions to many common problems. Please only post in this thread with feedback on how to improve this document. Do not post "Thank you" type responses. If you have additional questions or require more help, try to find an existing thread or create your own. Do not use this as a general help thread.
Q1: What's the difference between "Development" and "Original Development"?Here are the rough guidelines as to what should be placed in "Original Development":
*Official release of highly original and upstream custom ROMs (built from the ground up with significant original development within them).
*Official releases/development of such original ROMs, perhaps posted by the maintainer or their nominated person.
*A significant "first" in development for a device. This is something which took considerable time/effort and is generally accepted by developers to be non-trivial.
*Kernels which are built with beneficial changes that are not simply pulled from other kernels already available.
*Tools and utilities with a clear purpose, and which are well-made, and useful to users. They should have an element of originality, either in purpose or through significant improvement in the means of operation.
*Significant port of a ROM from one device to another, giving enhanced features or functionality to the users of the target device.
All other development work goes into "Android Development".

*NOTE* Before you enter bootloader mode your bootloader must be unlocked. Unlock your bootloader by following the first part of this thread.
To enter recovery mode, you will need to enter the bootloader (as detailed above) then use the 'volume down' button to navigate to 'RECOVERY'. Press the power button to confirm your choice. You'll now be booted into your custom recovery..

Q25: Any way to turn on and off wifi calling with wifi? This breaks ALL notifications from wifi calling but it doesn't break the functionality of calling itself. So when you're on wifi you just gotta trust that wifi calling is connected (or go into settings to see if it's on). Also it DOES break address confirmation but since this should only be a one time deal for most people you can just reenable the service when you need to confirm your address if you're adding a new network or simply want to re-confirm it. You also wont be able to turn the service on and off in settings, but since it's not a radio itself turning of wifi will kill any battery usage by wifi calling:
1. Get ROMtoolbox (I have the pro version so idk if it works on the free version)
2. Go into app manager
3. Find and open wifi calling (make sure its NOT the one from htc)(also don't just select it, make sure you go into the menu)
4. Go right to the advanced section
5. Select advanced freeze
6. Find the services "vowifiservice" AND "vowifinotiservice"
7. click on them to disable them and agree to the prompt
8. *optional* Reboot the phone or refresh the setting to clear any notifications currently showing
9.???
10. Profit
Thanks reinaldistic

yes unlocked means bootloader tampered is unlocked but its just the way the phone tells a technician if your warranty is void or not. with this phone you need to unlock root AND go s-off to have all permitions/privileges other phones get with just root
