Okay this would be my third attempt root my HTC G1 to flash a rom. I keep up on ending up with a looping tmobile g1 boot screen.
i followed the steps from this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14193280
and even tried this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
and even managed to get a quicker process of getting the all radio files and radio updates, hardspl and dangers spl, RA recovery from the first post and using a combined process of the first and second post. all my real problem is is that i need to flash a rom in order to not loose the root. I checked out the ROM Bible thread, grabbed froyo2.2 and still got looping boot. I tried some CM but still the same i honestly don't know what im doing wrong. If anyone can help me out and give me a thorough explenation step by step please lead me to a thread, pm me, or reply!
EDIT:
I went back down to stock 1.0
I would like to get better at rooting so i would preffer to stay away from "one click" rooting
So are you still at 1.0? What files do you have, radios, spls, recovery. Its not too difficult and fully agree to stay away from one click roots.

if so then do you have a custom recovery or a bootable os right now?
Well thats what i can get my phone settings to. but i tried flashing a custom rom but i end up getting the looping boot logo.
Also when i load into boot loader should i be typing in a command in order to reboot or battery pull. I wasnt sure but im kinda wondering if that has something to do with it. Obviously im not battery pulling while processes are going on only afterwards when its done is what i dont know what to do.
when you boot to recovery is it amonra 1.7.x? if so good, then just to get things going flash your superwipe, when finished reboot to recovery then repartition sd card to ext4, (everything on card will be erased so back up, swap is up to you, less the 100mb if you do, and depending how big of a card you have try to get 512mb for ext. in amora first choose swap (0 is disabled) then ext, remainder fat32. then upgrade to ext3 then to ext4
when this is done flash THIS ROM then reboot
Okay so far i accessed root access using CM telnet app and flashed RA-Dream recovery. I will now will be updating radios and flashing spls
hopefully i dont mess things up
i have a nandroid backup just for safety

No don't touch your radio and SPL! You have the newest! And don't you already have amonra flashed? If not yeah flash the recovery then wipe and partition and them flash rom

then [Alt+1]repair sd:ext
and so on till i partition to ext4?
you can just scroll down, no use for shortcuts, just choose partition, then choose swap and ext values, let it roll... takes a while, when done choose ext3... let it roll, now choose ext 4... ok flash rom!

Hey, so i have a g1 and was using youtube to jailbreak it and was doing ok, and even installed cupcake fine version 1.51 by jesus freak. i didnt really notice much differnce from the stock g1 so i tried to install cyanogenmod's latest rom so i put it on the memorycard as update.zip and i also put JFv1.51 ADP.zip on the card and tried to do a reset. i pressed alt W to wipe and alt S to install the new ROM but i noticed it still says JFv1.42 on the recovery utility and when i ry to boot after the update it just hangs on the tmobile g1 screen. I cant figure out what to do and need help. thanx!
Get amon_ra 1.5.2 recovery img,

do a wipe
then flash the ota, it will say reboot but dont,
press back the go to flash any zip and flash cyans rom then reboot, it will take you back to Recovery menu and wait till your able to move around then reboot phone again
Or use cyans Wiki guide to rooting and upgrading to use his rom
ANYONE? Ive read as long as i can get back to the recovery screen im ok, but weather i wipe it and just reboot or wipe and try to install the update it gives me the t mobile g1 screen. what can i do?

You will now install the actual OS of the phone. First you will install the legal Google apps, and then you will install CyanogenMod on top of those apps.
1. Turn your phone off.
2. Hold the Home button and "End" (power) button to boot to Recovery mode.
3. If you wish to have an option to return to your factory settings, select nandroid backup now. If not, continue.
4. Press Alt-W (or select "wipe data/factory reset")Press home to confirm
5. Press Alt-A (or select "apply any zip from sd")
* DRC83_base_defanged.zip or signed-dream-devphone...
6. Press home to confirm and let installation complete --Note that no "I have finished my job" message will appear after it finishes. Attempt to move the trackball once you see "Formatting CACHE:;" if you can see the highlight moving on the menu, it has completed the installation.
7. STOP - DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PHONE
8. Once again, press Alt-A (or select "apply any zip from sd")
* Select update-cm-4.2.x-signed.zip
9. Press home to confirm and let installation complete --Note that no "I have finished my job" message will appear after it finishes. Attempt to move the trackball once you see "Formatting CACHE:;" if you can see the highlight moving on the menu, it has completed the installation.
* If you used the Defanged DRC83, you need to manually install the ota-radio-2... just like the first two updates.
10. When this is complete, reboot your phone by pressing Home & Back.
11. Wait, your phone will display a [box] -> [phone] and say writing radio image and then reboot. This will take a couple of minutes. Be patient!
12. If the phone enters Recovery mode after rebooting, press Home & Back again to reboot it once more. You should see the blue CyanogenMod Android logo this time.
If that's all you wanted to do, you're done! You should now have a fully functional phone.

hi there, g1 is my first android phone so im not really good with the jargons. but i ve been able to set up adb in my pc. i could see my phone listed in both adb devices and fastboot devices command. but when i try to flash recovery or radio my computer restarts. weird right?? i ve tried it over and over again but its still the same. im currently using cm6.1 with hboot: 1.33.2005 radio: 2.22.23.02 with cwm 2.56. im trying to update to radio 2.22.27.08 with hboot:1.33.0013d. plz help!!
btw.. i ve nt partitioned my sd card. its still fat 32. would that make a problem??
ok well i have a method you can use to flash the latest radio and hboot via recovery if you cant get it to work via fastboot, just be very carefule, read the instructions and follow them properly! i garuntee you will not brick your device if you follow the instructions properly!! in your case i would start on... Step 2. if you dont have the Danger spl already.. or start at step3. if you already have danger spl if you feel safer unrooting first than you can follow the guide exactly from step 1... lol hope this helps..

ps. the sdcard shouldnt cause a problem with fastboot and adb.. but with the new radio a lot of the roms use ext3-4 so you might want to partition your sd.. just a suggestion..

then go to bootloader

-recovery(clockworkmod recovery)
-backup data
-?

soory for the bad english,
please... help me..
Ok well what do you want to upgrade to that is the question if you just want to upgrade form cm7.0.3 to cm7.1 I'm not sure it's really worth the trouble but if you want to go from cyanogen mod to something else then I need to know what the ROM is.
yeah you're right, but i just want to upgrade it... but this time with sense ui like this rom on this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995445
what do you think is the proper procedure? thanks
im so confused?? my recent phone is milestone 1, its easier for that phone to upgrade or de-grade... just copy the openrecovery, the rom and the gapps... now that i red the threads for nexus one... looks like im doing it for a suicidal move,..
Do research.... all your answers are in the stickies. Or on Google. Or by reading.

dont get mad on me
im just confused...
thaks anyway....
Put the ROM you want to flash in the FAT32 portion of the sd card.
Boot into CWM recovery (or Amon Ra)
Choose "Flash zip from sd card"
Choose "Select zip from sd card"
Flash your ROM, optional GAPPS or anything else
Reboot
NOTE: IF coming from different ROM do a full wipe
if just updating same ROM no need to wipe

He needs to *remove cmtd* (by flashing fr_remove_xxx.zip) before flashing a new radio or spl by recovery, or he needs to flash the new radio by flastboot (which I suggest, because it's much more secure). Everything about cmtd you can read on Firerat's Github repository.
Removing cMTD
Yes, you may like to remove cMTD The primary reason for removing cMTD is to flash a radio or hboot via recovery. I'm not going to go into detail here, but if you can then consider using fastboot instead of recovery for this. Sometimes you have no option, recovery will have to do..
there are few ways to remove cMTD
With early versions you just flashed an original recovery.img
In later versions, I supplied an extra remove.zip which can still be used.
since version 1.5.9-Alpha4, you just set systemMB to 0
adb shell
sed -i s/systemMB=.*\ /systemMB=0 /sdcard/mtdpartmap.txt
then flash AutoPatch-v1.5.9-Beta1-CustomMTD_S.zip, format routine, reboot to recovery If you are restoring a rom, then flash AutoPatch-v1.5.9-Beta1-CustomMTD_S.zip (twice) to make sure the boot.img is patched
Click to collapse
I understand this, that's the correct method? :
#1: plug the phone to my PC and install the drivers (need drivers?)
#2: run adb via "run" on the start menu
#3: write the resize command ("sed"? not "set"?)
#4: unplug the phone and launch to recovery, then run the AutoPatch-v1.5.9-Beta1-CustomMTD_S.zip (where can i find?)
#5: reboot to recovery, full wipe, install radio
#6: then reboot to recovery, full wipe, install hboot
#7: then reboot to recovery, full wipe, install ROM?
To remove cmtd you can also download FR-remove-v1.5.6-CustomMTD_S.zip, copy it onto your SD-card, reboot into recovery and flash the zip. That's all, now you have removed your custom partition layout, *but* your ROM installed will no longer boot up *and* you should clean up everything by either flashing Ohsaka's Superwipe or doing a
Code:
fastboot erase system -w
Now you have a clean phone with standard partition layout and you can start from there to install what you need. As always I suggest: Read before flashing! Especially if you want to go to the 27.08 /0013d combo you should read and understand Terry's thread before starting to flash.
Uhm, how to enter fastboot?
edit: i'm on fastboot mode but i don't have built on my PC.
Nah, i flashed the 1.33.0013d hboot via recovery and installed the Froyobylaszlo ROM. The radio needed fastboot, but i have a little problem... I installed the SDK, installed the drivers, but if i tryin to flash radio via fastboot, this searching for the dev for ever (waiting for the device)
The ROM is awesome, fast, have much of RAM, etc. - however not perfectly. I have 256MB Swap and 512MB ext4, but a few app/game, like Galcon and Opera Mini (my recomended apps) frozen at the beginning black screen and all browser (stock, Dolphins) force closing... user error? That's the missing radio's effect?
I thank all helps.

I decide to play with my G1 and it won't let me flash anymore ROMs via ROM Manager and even though I have my SU icon in my app drawer my phone isn't giving any root access to ANY app that requires it to work.

well in those past two years you have updated to the .13d spl and this a hacked up spl to give you more ram. it isn't fully s-off but rather you are limited.
not sure what you have done to your phone so I can't tell you how to fix it. my suggestion would be to fastboot -w or superwipe from recovery, then flash your rom again (and whatever kernel or mods you want to) also maybe stay away from rom mangaer and also movd to amonra recovery. again only suggestions being I don't know what you did you may as well start fresh

But now I can't use all of the apps I bought that require root access anymore. This kinds of defeats the purpose of having root. And I also still have the SU icon in my app drawer.

Well have you done the steps I suggested?
1) flash amonra recovery
2) either fastboot -w or superwipe or both
3) flash new rom via amonra recovery
Any problems you have had should be fixed now
If you can explain to me a bit better what you did I may have a simpler way of fixing things but if you can't the above method should do the trick

He probably doesn't know how to use recovery -___-
this is why i never liked the whole ROM Manager idea...
OP: You won't lose apps you bought, because Google keeps track of your purchases and lets you re-download them.

I know I won't lose apps the point that I was trying to make was that I can no longer use theses apps because they require root access permission to run/work.

I can't push files via ADB/USB port anymore because the USB port on my phone has taken a nose dive.
well you can flash the new recovery via terminal emulator if you want, or you can attempt to do it with rom manager (not a big fan of rom manager, kinda sucks)
superwipe scripts can be flashed via recovery (cw or amonra) flashing the rom again in recovery
again not sure what you did, you only said what dosent work, this should make your root apps work
just wiping clean and and a clean install of the rom should make them work

My old sd card went bad so I had to replace it with a new one. I also clicked on the github link he has posted in the forum and I downloaded amonra_bootable_recovery folder/file as a zip. Should I also update the SPL?
Sent from the Redlight District.
well updating your recovery doesn't have much to do with updating your spl but it doesn't mean you shouldn't
the most updated spl for the dream is the .13d
if you have something else then I suggest it as you get acess to additional ram if you do (~14mb)
if you do make sure you first have the appropriate radio or you could brick your phone, either the .25 or the .08 are the only radios that work with the .13d spl
to check what you have right now, power on while holding the camera button

I have that info on my first post of my thread. Is what I've posted the correct SPL & Radio for this to work?
Sent from the Redlight District.
you have the most updated radio and spl, although with the .13d hboot you can not flash a new recovery via fastboot, but you should still be able to via terminal emulator or if you can find the proper image in a .zip and be flashed through your current recovery. of course you should also be able to flash an alternative (amonra) recovey with rom manager. choose whatever way is easier.
and remember that flashing amonra recovery is only a suggestion and will not by itself fix your problem, I just prefer it over clockwork on the g1
mostly you should be concerned with backing up what is needed, wipeing fully, and the flashing a new rom

I'll look around the forum about updating the hboot on my device. Thx for the intel.

ummm, sorry if I wasn't clear, any change to you hboot/spl/bootloader (all the same thing) would be a downgrade. the only benifit you may get would be the ability to use fastboot to flash a recovery (or other partitions) if this really is what you want, flash the orange.nbh (found in ezterrys 2708+ thread) but after flashing a new recovery I would suggest going back to your current radio/spl as it is supperior in every other way

So in other words "If it ain't broke don't try to fix it"lol Plus all I really want is my s-off again, hell it's been so long since I've played with this phone I can't even remember how to get into the recovery screen.

How can I check to see what recovery I have before I do something unneccessary?
Sent from the Redlight District.
like isaid earlier you have the best spl for the dream, the only downfall is the semi s-on. but this is only in the fastboot sense, it isn't true s-on and with th is spl you can still have root
easiest way to boot to recovery (if rom allows) hold power, choose reboot, choose reboot recovery. you can also reboot recovery via adb (adb reboot recovery) or various apps allow this too
if this is to much info, power off. then power on while holding the home button

So can I flash the new recovery image from there as well or does it has to be done via fastboot?
